We live in a time where whatever lens you buy is probably the best lens ever made. I remember back in the 20zeros when the "new" Sigma 24-70 DG EX HSM f2.8 came out and the "new" Canon EF 24-70mm f2.8L came out and both were weak as newborn kittens. The Sigma had horrible AF and the Canon had amazing but weighed as much as Volkswagen Beetle. I have also owned the Canon EF 24-70mm f2.8L Mark II, Sigma 24-70mm f2.8 ART OS, Sigma 24-70mm DG DN f2.8 ART Mark I and tested out the Sony GM as well. They are all amazing and the differences are so small its like comparing perfects with perfects. Its absolutely amazing the OPTICAL quality in lenses these days.
I needed a 24-70mm and waited 6 years for something to come up that would be budget friendly and fantastic and finally I bought it last week the sigma ii, I'm extremely happy 😊
a new Sigma 24 70mm II is about $200 more than a used Sony 24 70mm GM II. If that's the case, I'll go for the GM lens as it's lighter and still better than the Sigma lens optically, focus accuracy wise and focus speed wise.
In Australia, both the Sigma MKII and Sony GM II are around 2.2k AUD lol I own the GM II and have to say the Tight / Smooth dial is a game changer as someone who uses dual camera straps for photography I find the lens sagging and when I kneel down the lens may hit the floor. Having it on tight mode alleviates that problem completely! Not sure if the default of Sigma MK II is closer to the tight or smooth setting though?
The 2 things the Sony out performs the Sigma is with focus breathing and fps. 3rd party lenses are artificially capped to 15 fps by Sony. Personally i will never care about shooting more than 15 fps. Especially with a 24/70. Its not really a sports or wildlife focal range. And i would have to be a serious video shooter to care about focus breathing. So for me it would be the Sigma. But Sony really needs to stop with these restrictions they put in there cameras for 3rd party glass. Nikon is starting to get 3rd party glass and there is no restriction on them.
that is so not true. Sony outperforms the Sigma in terms of focus speed, focus accuracy and active stabilization (which will have a larger crop for non Sony lens). If you're doing manual focusing, then fine, they are about equal.
@@veritas932You are using the word "outperform" very wrong dude, if the "outperforming" is not even noticeble for the client then it doesn't exist and EVEN if you want to do something about it you can EASILY correct it in 5 seconds in postproduction
What 😂 Did I misunderstand or are you saying sigma and other 3rd party lenses are capped at 15fps? I have no idea where you got this from but it’s so incredibly not true
@@macknewmann Probably got this rumor from Sony, where they list on their website that only Sony lenses are compatible with the max burst rate. It could have also come from some other horrible source, like the legions of camera reviewers and actual Sony users who have tried it. Maybe when I was shooting with my Sigma 24-70 and my Sony 70-200 on two bodies, my camera sounds were audible to those around, and one camera was bursting at a noticeably faster rate. Lots of ways they could have come across bad information. Thank you for clearing up the record so no one is misinformed.
For someone in the market for a 24-70, is Sigma mark II a much better buy than the mark I? They have like a $300 usd difference right now, so I’m wondering if I save money getting the older version 🤔
I'm the sort of person that would get the Sony for that 1% different in stabilisation, but I didn't see a lot of difference in your test. I feel like it's more true with GM primes vs non GM/non Sony
@@chrisbrockhurst this is the exact topic that has me a little flummoxed on which lens to buy - I'm looking to pick up either lens with pair as a workhorse with the FX3, primarily handheld work for documentaries, so stabilization will be super important. I really enjoyed the video and edit Chris, something a little different to your usual style. Not interested in either of the lenses though, I have the 20-70f4 and very happy with that for stills and video 😎
The same. I replaced my Sigma 24-70mm F2.8 with the Sony 20-70mm F4 because I had too many problems with the Sigma and I did not have the financial means to buy the Sony 24-70mm F2, 8 II. The 20-70mm F4 is very versatile and now with Lightroom I can further improve the Bokeh, especially with the new version.😄
Great job on the video Chris. Thanks for making it. I do love the Smooth/Tight switch on the G-Master, but the real reason I went with the Sony over the Sigma was the little switch the Sigma has instead of the focus ring tightener. That "Zoom Lock " they have isn't a lock at all, but more of a "Zoom Hold". It takes almost no pressure to get the lens to release it, and the fact that they call it a "lock" fills me with a disproportionate rage. If it actually locked onto my desired focal length and didn't allow for movement of the focal ring until manually disengaged, I would have likely bought the Sigma. But the day after I picked up the pre-production version of the Mark 2 Art lens, even while acknowledging that it is still a spectacular lens that is a vastly better buy than anything in its class, I ordered the Sony.
i'm actually considering it along with the GM mark II as recently I have noticed when shooting events in low light my Tamron 28-75 mark I struggles to focus every once in a while and I lose some shots. For example for about 860 shots on the last event, about 10-12 were out of focus. The auto focus performance is also a bit slower and I need something a bit faster in low light. Will need to research more though.
Would you rate Sigma's zoom ring as 'smooth' or 'tight' compared to Sony? And how does it compare in terms of weight balance? Previous version was quite front heavy.
Compared to the original Sony 24-70 GM how much better is this one? I’m looking to buy a 24-70 and found the original 24-70 GM at the same price as the New Sigma 24-70ii. Which one would you recommend?

My reason to spend double is not in the video. When I bought the Sony, the new Sigma hadn't come out yet. The old Sigma and the Samyang were way heavier, the Tamron starts from 28mm.
