SEGA SATURN Emulation just got BIG!

- There is some HUGE breakthroughs with Sega Saturn Emulation. Especially on low end systems and single board computers. The Odroid XU4 is now able to play Sega Saturn games to a great standard and many of the classics are now fully playable on there.
All footage used in this video has been taken from the ODROID XU4 running this emulator. Some games can be made to run even smoother by lowering the Resolution (480p @steady 60fps), some game can be made to look better by increasing it (1080p @ 30FPS full speed in most cases). For the purpose of this video, I used the same res throughout (x2 @ mostly steady 60FPS, sometimes 30FPS all full speed) to show what its like at a medium setting!
It is a WIP and the build that has the Saturn compatibility is still in BETA stages for the ORA team. But it will soon be made public so you guys get to share all this too!
I also mentioned my ODRIOD theme too. The link to this is in the links below. It is still WIP, but very much useable. Just make sure you read the README text on the github site. It shows you what settings you need to put in to make it work as intended. I know some of you dont know how to work Github yet, so I will make a dedicated video in the next day or so showing you how to do this in detail... aslo updating it ready for the official launch!

Great progress with the Sega Saturn Emulation! Never thought these games would ever be playable like this on a tiny SBC... they are a beast to run even on the PC. Is there anything else you would like me to test out on here... any games or other systems?!?!

Would love to know if Saturn Bomberman is working without issue on the XU4, and if it's possible to hook up 10 controllers for the battle mode via a USB splitter or via a bluetooth dongle. Great video mate!
So, considering the recent progress, what emulator do you recommend for Saturn emulation on a pretty solid Windows PC? (i7 2600, 1050ti, 16gb of ddr3)

That one should be able to run full fat Saturn Emulators. Most compatible emu for that is Mednafen... either RetroArch version (beetle Saturn) or the stand alone one. If you want to push the graphics or if its stuggling you can go for the PC forks of this one called Kronos or Yaba Sanshiro
I tried Story of Thor 2 on yaba sanshiro for Android on Xiaomi A1 and it really kicks ass... haven't tried with other games.

The Saturn cost my Dad £400. I got it from a catalogue with guardian Heroes and Sega Rally, I remember it so vividly because I took 3 days off school to play and missed a school trip, but it was so worth it.....

I had a saturn for christmas 97 and a whole bunch of games that were then stolen by a guy who came in to do some fitting. My mum dident believe me!
@@robospacekitty2007 Knowone believed me just being a kid, Said I had probably lent them out to friends or traded them in. I never heard or seen from the guy again. Saturn games at that point were worth pennies so knowone probably cared anyway.

I was planning to build the first PC you showed before you showed it, I even got the parts for around £200 minus the CPU and RAM but my GPU didn't fit in my case so I'm thinking I might just sell the case and the GPU and make whatever your new build is. I have about £300 max budget I just want to order the parts in the next 2 or 3 weeks since that's when I start uni

Thanks for reminding me of Saturn shinobi, it was no revenge of shinobi (but then few games are) but it was good cheesy fun with those cinematics. Going to give this a play tonight, still got my Saturn, so worst case scenario, I just go for the disk out of the boxes in the attic (got everything on a stack of 4 of those cheap 8TB drives, so boxed up all my games).

There is a Retroarch core that uses Yabause also, and it runs great, I think when this update apply on the core of retroarch it will be a very cool experience. The mednafen core on the retroarch also runs great nowadays..

I'm so happy that Saturn Emu is making progress, I grew up as a gamer and till this day, I still love it and the new age modern high powered graphic games never give me that magical experience that older systems gave. Something about those pixelated, not perfect graphics that just did the magic for me. Do you think Saturn will ever come to light on the PS Vita? Really only wanted to play 1 game and thats the Shining Force 3. I've been replaying all 3 scenarios for over 20times since the days of Saturn
I hope emulator progress like this can help me do my recordings with less need for spec. :)

It's 2021 and the Odroid XU4 isn't dated....it's matured. I'm still loving this SBC today.

I remember when the real breakthrough came for the DC, and that was when a UK Dreamcast magazine released a demo for the Action Replay (in the US at the time, Game Shark) that had the ability to use the swap technique to play not only foreign games but also burns. This was I recall in the middle of 2000. That was when the homebrew community for the Dreamcast really began, first with emulators like Boob Boy (a GB emulator) and then with original programming and mods using the Beats of Rage engine.
And now in 2018 we still get fan games for the system.
And it’s insane that some Dreamcast games can run on the Raspberry pi 3 while Saturn can’t.
Bizhawk works very great too with sega saturn games. Haven't had any trouble running those old games. SSF emulator couldn't even start MK trilogy. Now i'm running it flawless. Bizhawk rules

The second one has no problems at all... but the first isnt playable yet from what I can tell. But I didnt test it on the latest version, just the one from a few days ago, so could be lucky :D

Huh, I’ve never emulated Saturn before, but I actually downloaded Yabause the other day, it was the first one I found. Definitely a fantastic console and it’s great to hear that I just got what is pretty much the hot new thing, lol. Hopefully Burning Rangers will be running at full tilt soon as well.
The people who made REDREAM need to make an emulator for Saturn now that would be EPIC!!
i actually used yabuze before i knew about mednafen. it did work ok with some games but after working with mednafen for so long i really do love it. would not mind checking out this new version just for more easy access
The Saturn got hacked a few years back to support sd card so more info came out about the Saturn hardware. This is cool. I have a lenova snapdragon tablet and this would be awesome on it

Fuck yeah! Great to see things are going so well with Sega Saturn emulation! Sega seems to have forgotten anything that wasn't the fucking Genesis, so we gotta keep the Saturn and Dreamcast love alive!
Plays really well on android I have the last 3 or versions,rarely glitches
The only two special features that I really want on an emulator like this would be increasing the internal resolution, and being able to do custom/HD textures. Mainly since the pixelated 2D effects look bad when the internal resolution is turned up. (No idea why they refuse to add that to PCSX2) You showed the higher resolution, are custom textures a possibility?

Yaba sanshiro on my nvidia shield tv runs like a dream,gets updated all the time and runs all iso's in native resolution of the shield tv and all 60 fps

I couldn't get Radiant Silvergun to work for some reason, but Guardian Heroes runs like a dream on the Shield.
@@shaunbowen radiant silvergun was the first iso I downloaded when I got my shield was after it for years plays perfect on mine,what site did you download the iso think I used emuparadise r.i.p must have about 50 iso for the saturn and the only one I couldnt get to work was astal
I've had the ISO for about 5/6 years as I had it running on an emulator on my PC ages ago. I can't remember where I got it. I think I'll try downloading it again if I can find it (although Guardian Heroes is still my favourite!)

Great video mate,i have all three emulators,mednafen yabause and chronos 1.43 version.Mednafen runs great,chronos cannot run my jp version of pdragoon 2,and yabause cannot play the sound without making noisy effects.I want to use yabause or chronos due to the image enhancements.Sorry for my poor english,thanx in advance mate
great days remember buying the saturn when it came out cost about $800.00 but the games were amazing for the time, daytona , sega rally , virtual fighter 1 & 2 , tomb raider , victory boxing , fighting vipers , great games wish you could run an emulater on a modded xbox 360
I think I have yabause on my computer. But I don't currently have the bios for it yet, so I can't test it. I use demul for Dreamcast emulation, although it does tend to suffer from a bit of stuttering. I don't know for sure if I got it properly working as I've only tested one game last time and it seemed okay.

As an owner of Burning Rangers and a Saturn, I can tell you the slow gameplay you've got there isn't actually that far behind.

And I was thinking about getting a saturn. Might just for GP reasons, but this will be good and better (hoping input lag isn't terrible) for me since I emulate all my games like Goldeneye 64 at 60 frames a second 4 player splitscreen
I'm waiting for Windows and Linux updates to come around for Yabause. I can try Mednafen in the meantime, but yeah.

Can you update the hyperspin saturn guide to use this? SSF has been driving me nuts and I can't seem to get SCSI setup on Daemon Tools lite anymore.
played SF Alpha 2 on yabause-0.9.15-win64 and after some big hits and super combo, it makes some noises like old TV wihtout signal (tshhhhh) until u hit opponent the sound back to normal
