- 2012 was an absolutely crazy year looking back on it. While the in track product wasn’t the greatest ever the storyline and outright chaos that was produced makes it a hell of a ride to look back upon. Today we’re gonna do that. This is the weirdest (craziest) NASCAR season of the 2010s.

What was your favorite part of the 2012 NASCAR Cup Series season?
Tony Stewart
Jeff Winning Pocono, I was so happy
Michael Waltrip Racing running well
My Man Keselowski winning the title, and Joey Logano winning once.
I dslike Kyle Busch,he had 3 DNFs from Dover to Michigan Aka Hometrack
He also once at Richmond
*Brad Keselowski drunk* at the end of the championship describes the 2012 year as a whole *[colorized]*
I like how i see you everywhere
2012: Drunk and Happy
Ditto.
Still love that interview. And that big glass of Miller Lite is how you celebrate a championship. At least Brian France didn’t steal his beer. 🍺
Just bout to say that
Fun fact: Keselowski won the championship in the last Dodge car in Nascar
As of now. Of course, I don't expect Dodge to return, but who knows what will happen.
well dodge made a 6th generation car but nobody wanted to run it ironically
@@pewterschmidt23lord99 Yeah I saw it a couple of times.
It wasnt the last dodge they were in xfinity 🤦♂️
In the Cup series yes. Some Xfinity teams ran Dodges for a good while after 2012. Mike Harmon for example.
Whats even weirder about this season is that Steven Leight won rookie of the year
that was due to few rookies in that season to the point I thought that there were non until recently.
All because Josh Wise was a S&P...
I couldn’t even pronounce his last name back then.
@@ColeCoibiBFDIObject Yeah Danica her first year for cup was in the year before which to most is the worst Rookie season that had more then one person in it full time.
You know, we complained so much about the COT but when looking back we actually had it much better than now...
Exactly COT wasn’t all that bad.
No the worst was the first iteration of the 2007-2008 Nex gen car style, the way the wing sent cars upside-down and flying was to the point several drivers delayed moving up to cup until the wing was changed back to a spoiler.
@@DerrickRG Yep the early wing style to the cars in 2007-2008 seasons and how in at least 2 races they would finish upside-down either out of the race early or on final lap, was not safe. I think driver Tony Stuart won upside-down in the air at a race on final lap that the catch fence broke and sent pieces at spectators to the point they had to get stiches at the hospital. The car was bad. I hear and see gen 7 is going to be like a IMSA 12/24 hour racing sports car made for Stock racing with one lug for each wheel and body shape more to those card but with a spoiler.
@@caseysmith544 yes NASCAR balanced out the COT by using the spoiler and remodeling it before 2011 and they actually did drive race cars for two seasons. The splitter wasn't a problem either.
@@runrafarunthebestintheworld No the second splitter was the issue with the newer nose and had to allow in rules for more bracing to have a splitter issue fixed. They did that after 2009 season for NASCAR Cup.
You didn’t even mention how Jeff Gordon got into the Chase by one point over Kyle Busch after having a horrible car until the last 150 laps.
Gordon started with a bad car ended with a good one... Kyle started with a good car ended with a bad one. I remember falling asleep during the rain delay figuring Kyle would be in. Woke up woth about 4 to go to see Bowyer take the win and Gordon make it in. It was so odd.
@@doomusrlc actually I remember I went to bed because it was so late and I had lost all hope. (I mean Gordon’s season was a struggle.) I went to the computer to see who made it. I literally shouted when I saw Gordon was in and not Busch. I thought I was still sleeping and I was just dreaming. I couldn’t believe it.
I remember that. Man I miss that chase
Not to mention, Jeff Gordon started the year upside down. That was another topsy turvey part of the year, because that was the first time in his 20 seasons that he flipped a NASCAR racecar. Not to mention, Kyle Busch really earned his nickname "Wild Thing" that night. Lol
@GN A frustrating night to be a KB fan, especially after the championship caliber chase he put together that year. Don’t think he would’ve beat Brad but likely P2.
10:10 How 5 hour energy didn't turn this into an actual commercial, I'll never know. It's PERFECT
Facts
I know Kurt got suspended for it but that interview will forever be legendary.
Don't forget about the Daytona 500 from 2012 ended on Tuesday morning because of the jet dryer explosion
Scheduled for sunday, started on monday, finished on tuesday. Also believe it was the first time the race was postponed to monday
Stayed up all night to watch the finish of the 500 despite me having school that morning
@@JonathanGaeta I dozed off while they were still under red flag. By the time I woke up, it was already over. I was in the 5th grade at that time.
there are 3 words to describe the 2012 season.
PRETTY DAMM AWESOME
My favorite was Brad K taking his sponsor seriously celebrating his Championship during television interviews.
Comedic Gold, I tell 'ya.
That rookie class was wierd
Oh and mark martins Michigan crash
Weird that Clint Bowyer won all of his races that season on fuel mileage.
Wins are wins, I guess. I hate Danica, but she's an IndyCar winner via fuel mileage.
Now that Clint Bowyer and Jeff Gordon are officially going to be broadcast partners in the booth, it's crazy to think how far we have come from the Phoenix 2012 race. It's sure going to be fun having both of them in the booth, with Mike Joy trying to calm both of them down.
I am happy to call this the first NASCAR season I ever watched. It's very special to me
Also was my first year seeing NASCAR (my first race was the Daytona 500 deferred), but my first full season was 2013.
It was so great. I miss when NASCAR was actually fun and not nonsense drama we have now..
@@Pen2ke the first time I tried to watch a full race was 2012 fall Dega. Had to go somewhere with about 20 to go and missed the insane finish
That fall Talladega race that year was one of the best plate races I’ve ever seen.
Michael Waltrip Racing's biggest year and they would be Joe Gibbs Racing 2.0 if Spingate never happened
I don't know about Joe Gibbs 2.0 but they'd still be around
@@jakobwedel3168 They were on their way to becoming one of the powerhouse teams like Joe Gibbs Racing, Hendrick Motorsports, Stewart Haas Racing and Team Penske prior to Spingate
Every Toyota team other than Joe Gibbs just can’t seem to make it. MWR got busted for cheating way to much and dropped their cup series. HScott and Gaunt Brothers couldn’t field a car, and Leavine went bankrupt. Wonder how much time is left for 23XI.
I think the craziest part of the 2012 season was danica blowing an engine on the last lap at Phoenix and all the leaders wrecking.
She wrecked under green with 2 to go (no caution for some reason) and that blew the engine which makes it crazier
2012 a great year. Last year of the COT unfortunately.
COT died way too soon...
Once they got rid of the wing and went back to the spoiler, that car put on some excellent racing. Its road course package was, in my opinion, the best ever. Every COT road course race was must see TV
The wing put on good racing too, it just looked like shit.
@@-BigMike- I did not mind the wing, but it caused more damage and it was more dangerous
The Cot was awesome to bad the drivers hated them.
2011 and 2012 were amazing. Boy do i miss that gen 5 car.
funny how things change. That was the CoT that everyone hated
@@ThePaintballernick 2008 and 2009 actually did suck though. We had the first boring All Star race in 2008.
2:20 During the rain caution laps, Jimmie Johnson’s car started to blow up, smoking and all. But because the race couldn’t be restarted, he lucked into a 10th place finish. Hence why to this day, he’s only completed every possible lap of his career at Auto Club because of that rain.
thats why I love to rewatch 2012. Wish NASCAR stayed with the COT
How did you not bring up the greatest interview in NASCAR history
Keep in mind how crazy 2012 speedweeks were. Jeff Gordon flipping in the sprint unlimited, Joey Colter going into the catchfence on the last lap in the truck race, Juan Pablos Jet Dryer crash, plus plenty of other insane moments.
Kurt wrecking the entire top 10 in the Nationwide race and James Buscher coming out of nowhere was hilarious!😂
I remember some 2012 races like it was yesterday
Same here. It was a great season imo
Yep. It was great. Too bad Brian France decided to make Cars that look like a street car and failed.
Suggestion: Missing Rings Kyle Busch 2009 Daytona 500
Before 2012, I liked Brad Keselowski.
After 2012, became a fan.
I liked him after that win in 2009
@@johnboy4025 same, and I liked him more when Carl tried to kill him twice. Fuck Carl Edwards
@@dadbodii Keselowski tried to kill edwards, some fans, and Newman.
@@letsgoorlandomagic407 Keselowski held his line like he was supposed to because he knew he would lose if he passed below the yellow line. Edwards cut across his bumper. I don’t see how it could be interpreted any differently
Why is this a debate, boys? Nobody tried killing anybody. I understood why Edwards was upset, having multiple run-ins with Brad in a short period of time; still shitty on Edwards part to take Keselowski out on the fastest part of the track.
Little known fact: During the 2012 Daytona 500 rain delay, professional bowling took the time slot. Bowler Pete Weber would face off against Mike Fagan. Weber and Fagan were neck and neck the whole game until the tenth inning. Fagan’s final score would be 214. Weber, who had been booed mercilessly the whole game stepped up and bowled a strike. His final score would be 215. Winning by one point. In what is now one of the most famous internet memes of all time, Weber ripped his glasses off and looked at the crowd and yelled “WHO DO YOU THINK YOU ARE? I AM!” after clinching his fifth PBA US Open. This just adds to the chaos of the season.
The fact that this was the final year dodge was in the series
And this is why 2012 is one of my all-time favorite seasons
Throw in Brad’s drunk interview and that it was the last year of Dodge
Legend has it no one still knows what that spotte/crew chief said when Rowdy got spun at the Glen
The Gordon/Boyer rivalry is what I remembered most from 2012. Seemed like Jeff kept getting the short end of the stick, but boy did he make sure he messed Clint's season up when he'd finally got to his boiling point in Phoenix.
2010: Okay, Jimmie gets #5, yet was bad for Gordon, but still decent year.
2011: A bunch of drivers get wins and a great Championship battle.
2012: anything odd happened
2013: Does anyone even remember this season?
2014: First year of Champ. 4 and was pretty epic.
2015: Someone takes the lead on lap 1 and wins the race.
2016: A bunch of great finishes, and a ton of retiring drivers.
2017: Decent racing, a few good restarts, and an underdog champ.
2018: The Big 3
2019: TOYOTAS!
I still remember flipping the Tv to wind Tunnel that night and seeing Brad talking to Dave. That was great
This brought back memories of my dad and I yelling at the tv during this season. This was an awesome season and I’ll always remember Tony’s helmet toss 🤣 great video👍🏻👍🏻
Who’s his favorite driver lol
I work at Team Penske and lived this season on the road. It was one of my best years in the sport!
I'm bummed you didn't include Brad's amazing drunk interviews after he won the championship. That was up there for sure, but for me the best was the Watkins Glen finish, one of my favorite battles ever.
Amazing season.
The amount of sheer luck Brad had in Phoenix was amazing. Just barely missing that Gordon/Bowyer wreck and then getting center punched in the door after Danica’s wreck coming to the checkerd, he could have easily been wiped out in either instance.
Yep but also weird in many years
I'm still pissed about phoenix
Get in the booth with Jeff Gordon. 😅😅
Sorry man, hey were gonna be in the booth together soon!🏁🏁🏁
Great video! Its funny because I remember all these moments happening, but I've never really considered that ALL of these crazy moments happened in the 2012 season. As a Brad Keselowski fan, the moment that always stands out to me from that year is watching Brad's final interview of the night after his championship on Wind Tunnel with Dave Despain. Brad was PLASTERED drunk, and yet still gave an awesome interview. So memorable.
2020 easily the weirdest
@@ColeCoibiBFDIObject 2015 was not a good season
@@ColeCoibiBFDIObject 2019 is the worst season in NASCAR history IMO. Heck I only watched 1 or 2 maybe 4 races that year.
Despite the sport having a woke episode, it came out on top this year
@@ColeCoibiBFDIObject Not when Kryle was handed a Championship it turned into not a good season
@@ColeCoibiBFDIObject No that was 2015
Bro HOW is 2015 considered the worst. Kenseth vs Logano is the most memorable moment of the 2010’s
Even if Homestead was a boring race for such a weird year, one could think that the craziness was being saved for all of Brad's postrace interviews
The battle between Johnson and Keslowski at Texas where Keslowski got insanely loose makes me miss the Gen 5 even more
This season was so crazy, the battle between Gordon and Busch to get into the chase and the crazy duel between Johnson and Keselowski at Texas didn’t even make it into the video
This was awesome. Brought back a lot of good and funny memories.
I was at the Daytona 500 that year. I drove from New Jersey. Was that the race where Brad was on Twitter from inside his car?
Haha yes the tweet from the car
that watkins glen last lap is one of my favorite moments ever
That watkins glen finish was absolutely insane
I had a few watched races as a kid including the last two races of 2011, and those coupled with 2012 being the first full season I watched really made me a fan
Could you do a What If? video regarding each NASCAR chase system being used since 2004. I know you’ve done the Winston Cup system, Current Playoff system, and Original Chase system, but could you also do the 2007-10, 2011-13, and 2014-16 systems for 2004 to 2020.
That watkins glen finish was legendary.
You didn't add Brad getting drunk like crazy after he won. That was the crazy cherry on top for that season.
The only thing that Montanas cup currier is going to be remembered is when he hit the jet dryer in my opinion
Also 2012 was clint bowyers best chance to win the championship but if jeff gordon didn't wreck him at Phoenix it would've been a closer points finish between him and brad kieslowski
bowyer would have won the championship that year if it wasnt for phoenix
2012 NASCAR was really the weirdest season. Juan crashing into the jet dryer at the Daytona 500 and Brad Keselowski winning the championship and his post race interview with all that Miller Lite 🍺. While me during as a 11 year old in 2012 I was fearing for upcoming end of the world on December 21st which never happened.
The COT 2.0 (aka the 2011 and 12 cot) was the best car we had in the 10s and arguably the millennium. Fight me lol
I still remember when Pablo Montoya hit the jet dryer that was so great to watch them put it out.
they need to bring back the beer cup back into the championship . was so fun seeing brad talk funny
Bowyer and Gordon are friends on Fox now, that's weirder
That Talladega race was the first cup race without an Earnhardt since 1979 and the first race without a driver from North Carolina since the 50s
But Earnhardt was in that race, wasnt he?
@@zikalokof1challenge414 oh shit. I meant to say the race after that Talladega race. I think it was Charlotte.
@@Dalejrandsr88 Oh k
Say what you will about the COT, but the paint scenes and car design looked sick as hell
i guess i didnt realize just how how many unforgettable moments came from 2012
You forgot the part where the Daytona 500 Jet Dryer Red Flag was the start of NASCAR Twitter thanks to that iconic Brad K Backstretch Photo!
That's a refreshing looking thumbnail
A big thumbs up to Kurt just being real that year!
The craziest thing at homestead was brad getting drunk lmao
There was only one thing that was missed, in my opinion. This was the last year that Dodge ran in the cup series. And it just so happens they ended up winning the cup that year. Their last year in the sport and they went out as champions. Just one more bit of icing on the cake.
This one was my favorite season.
Might not have been the best every race. Some races were definitely snoozers. But I just remember watching almost every race and it was always a fun time. My first full nascar season
Clint Bowyer ain't immature, Jeff Gordon is. He wrecked Bowyer from something that happened way earlier in the year that wasn't even his fault bc Newman should've him into Gordon. And Bowyer didn't even do anything that race at Phoenix to deserve getting wrecked. Gordon just felt like taking out his anger on someone else.
Brad hammered enjoying his Miller lol and Montoya hitting the jet dyer lol there’s still a cement strip on turn three to let us remember
Honestly, how can anybody forget Bad Brad's drunk interviews on SportsCenter and Wind Tunnel after winning the championship?
Glad Gordon won at homestead that year after what happened lol😂
I’m not. He shouldn’t have been allowed at that race
2012 was crazy, didn't think about that. But I remember all of it. I remember coming out of the shower and seeing that fire at Daytona and went "What the-"
I was at the Daytona 500 and pocono races. Two of the craziest races I have ever been to.
Brad K tweeting from his car during a red flag
Montoya’s jet dryer incident, Jeff Gordon and Clint Bowyers incidents, This season had it all. It was definitely a crazy one.
You forgot to add all the drunken interviews with Brad after the race. That should of been the last crazy moment.
I was at pocono for that crazy finish that was the race were a fan got hit by lightning
Keselowski’s drunken interview definitely comes to mind
I remember when I beat Jimmy Johnson to the finish at Martinsville Speedway.......it was AWESOME!!!
This was my first season watching full time but not till the 4th race. I clearly remember my dad watching the 500 and I came down just in time to see Juan Pablo Montoya crash. This season was tough as a kb fan but it’s always special to me and I actually really liked the look of these cars
Jeff Gordon and Clint Bowyer had the best rivalry in 2012 and how ironic they are in the FOX booth in 2021.
Kurt Busch had the Face Turn in 2012. I hated how the media kept attacking him.
It was by far the worst year of Kurt's career, ranking only like 25th in points.
@@CJODell12 It was, I know.
I think the Pocono finish was under appreciated
I think, when I saw Brad perfectly execute a preplanned move at Talladega on the last lap, to keep Kyle Busch behind him, I knew he would win the championship that year. Usually, leading on the last lap was a sure sign of getting passed in the last turn, but Brad used knowledge gained from qualifying tactics, and stayed high on the penultimate lap, then shooting low on the final two turns. This was always used in qualifying to get the most speed. I'd never seen that in a race before. Busch had to follow him on this line, and could do absolutely nothing on the last lap. First time I'd ever seen a driver hold the lead on the last lap in that particular situation.
The last year of the COT was wild, sooooo the last year of the Gen 6 will be wild.
LOL. Joey Logano was taken out by both Jeff Gordon, and Matt Kenseth in bonehead moves. However, Jeff; was aiming for the other guy :P
What's wierd is for a lot of people don't realize that this was Bowyer's only real shot at a championship.
I had forgotten about all that stuff happening in 2012. Another couple of storylines from that year was the first year of fuel injection, the rearend housings moving, and AJ Allmendinger violating the drug policy.
Yep I did too since I really didn't have a working computer or Cable to keep up with the NASCAR news.
You should go to pocono, the racing might not be good at pocono but the fan experience is amazing
I was thinking after the rookie season video that 2012 was gonna be on it. As a 7 year old kid back then I really enjoyed that season especially the Watkins Glen and Talladega fall finish
The weirdest part of the whole season was that Johnson finally got dethroned and dodge won the dang championship and never came back
2012 was my first NASCAR season. It was pretty chaotic.
Dont forget this year had the infamous Tony Stewart interview whe nhe said they should change talladega into a figure 8 or run the wrong way
Keselowski really stared down Jimmie and the 48 team down the stretch and beat them straight up which was rare between 2006-2013.
Would of been nice to see Homestead. If Jimmie finished the Phoenix race running. He was leading the race before he blow a tire.
@@talenmcgraw6102 Jimmie also broke at Homestead, which is why the title race is perceived by some to be a dud when it was actually really good. It was the crash at Phoenix followed by the loose lug right before the rear end burned up at Homestead that gave Brad a healthy margin. If Jimmie doesn't crash at Phoenix, it's also very possible Brad wins that race as he'd just taken the lead a lap or 2 before Jimmie crashed.
Man I sure miss 2011 and 2012 NASCAR. Too bad I couldn't watch all the races on that where on cable and just followed live on Race buddy. Should've looked on UA-cam to see if there was a broadcast. Oof... 😅
That Pocono race was the first NASCAR race I ever watched I remember Gordon won that race after it was rained out
Did you even watch the other races from the Beginning season of the season? LoL
Nascar at Watkins glen is some of the best racing I’ve ever seen
