They had graduated from high school from 1999-2002. Every single person I talked to said they considered themselves GenX, not millennial. All of us had lived on our own in our early 20's, paid bills with checks, had landline phones in our first apartments (some of us still do have them in our homes). None of us grew up with the internet or cell phones, and we actually started early adulthood without those things. We all watched 80's cartoons as children, but not 90's cartoons (I had never even heard of Hey Arnold until I saw a spoof on Millennials that mentioned it. I was about 17 or 18 when the Pokemon craze began for kids). We remember Ronald Reagan being our President (even if we didn't fully understand world events). Operation Desert Storm was the only declared war in our childhood, because we were adults by the time 9/11 and the ensuing wars happened. We were in our late 20's when the Great Recession happened, and already had our foot in the job market by that point, so it wasn't as bad for us as it was for the kids about ten years younger than us who were just getting their first jobs at that point. We remember carrying change for payphones to let our parents know we were heading home, and we also remember, being a little older, having calling cards when we traveled, to use to make long-distance calls on payphones. The things people say about Millennials don't usually apply to people in our age bracket. I think they've come up with a sub-generation for us called Xennials.
