Wrapping a historic Hemi drivetrain in a tailored interior and 18 feet of stylish sheetmetal, this 1958 300D, one of only 809 produced, HAS to be one of the coolest classics on the planet!
    BODYWORK/TRIM
This hardtop, a solid car that reflects bright PPG 2-stage, seems appropriately patriotic given its red, white and blue aesthetics. Those aesthetics are perfectly complemented by re-chromed, original bumpers and polished, original stainless that looks almost as good as the day it left the showroom. And despite what some might call exaggerated proportions and excessive brightwork, this graceful, Exner-era coupe is exceptionally striking and decidedly handsome.
    ENGINE
The car's 392 cubic inch Firepower Hemi is still regarded as a big block legend. Induction is handled by snazzy gold air cleaners, which are piped directly in to two Lokar-controlled Carter 4-barrels. Fire is provided by a high performance points distributor, which sequences spark between a tagged Chrysler generator and eight pliable plug wires. Combustion comes courtesy of forged pistons, hydraulic lifters, hardened pushrods and a quality hydraulic roller camshaft that breathes through a high performance intake and low restriction exhaust manifolds. Aesthetically, the engine's fresh aluminum paint contrasts well against cool gold valve covers and the car's glossy blue fenders. And little details, like stainless lines, a MoPar battery, Autolite horns and a cool Jiffy Jet washer bag, provide tons of exciting eyeball appeal.
    DRIVETRAIN/SUSPENSION
That low-slung powerplant communicates through a '60s-era A727 Torqueflite and '70s-era 8.75-inch Chrysler axle. That upgraded drivetrain rides a familiar torsion bar/leaf spring suspension, which mixes a '70s-era Cordoba front-clip with high quality PST sway bars and KYB Excel-G shock absorbers. At the corners of that suspension, power front disc and rear drum brakes ensure solid, fade-free stops. Those stops are directed by modern power steering, which makes good use of a rebuilt Firm Feel gearbox. At the center of the car's rust-free floors, a traditional true-dual exhaust system employs baritone turbo mufflers. And all this road-worthy hardware rolls on painted and capped wheels, which twist pliable 235/70R15 BF Goodrich Silvertown Radial whitewalls.
    INTERIOR
Take a look inside this coupe and you'll find an elegant 2-tone interior that sports enough room to haul the whole family in comfort! Wide bench seats, power-operated for the front passengers, prop pliable vinyl covers under fresh lap belts. In front of those seats, a vivid dash hangs a crack-free pad over a modern Sony CD player and stylish, pushbutton transmission controls. And in front of the driver, an original steering wheel spins a chrome horn ring around a patriotic 300 logo.
If you're a discerning gearhead who likes top-notch classics that draw crowds wherever they go, this all-American cruiser will be a significant addition to your collection! Call, click or visit RKMotorsCharlotte.com for more information.

This is the FIRST time that I've seen a '58 Chrysler 300 that was not red, white, or black !!
    Gorgeous blue !!
Hubcaps should have been the same color !!

Color was called Cadet Blue. This is believed to be the ONLY `58 300D produced in that color.

The 1957-58 Chrysler 300 is my absolute favorite production car from the 1950's...but my favorite 50's car overall is a 1957 Dodge Coronet D-501...a stripped down, factory race car powered by a 355 horsepower full race version of the Chrysler 354 Hemi that was built in very limited numbers just for NASCAR homologation purposes. The Chrysler 331/354/392 Hemi is also the best high performance engine from the 1950's just like the 426 Hemi is the best high performance engine from the 1960's. The 1955 Chrysler 300 is the very first American muscle car... the first ever American production car with a 300 horsepower factory rating. Then in 1956 the other 3 Mopar divisions(except for Imperial) all released their own high performance models to compete with the Chrysler 300...the DeSoto Adventurer, the Dodge D-500, and the Plymouth Fury. The Dodge D-500 was the fastest American production car in 1956 just like the Chrysler 300 was the fastest in 1955. Mopar first began marketing muscle cars in the mid 1950's...almost a full decade before the 1964 Pontiac GTO first came out. The 1955-61 Mopar high performance models were the fastest and most beautiful and stylish cars on the road at that time and maybe the most beautiful cars ever built even to this day...but they did suffer from some build quality issues and some rust issues during the Exner era.

I think that is really weird that they pulled the plug on an engine series that was so successful . They must have made the decision in 54 or 55 to be tooled up and cranking out B - RB engines in 57 - 58 . I have heard the cost argument regarding the early hemi , but they could have just made more poly style as standard equipment . The RB block is much more heavy and complicated so there was no cost savings there , and the RB heads still use 1 rocker shaft ( and don't flow very well ). I'm not sure the true story behind that move has ever been told.

The amazing thing to me is that you guys have a turntable so powerful, it works with the colossal bulk of a '58 Chrysler standing on it. :)
(The other poster who mentioned it is right, that's a beautiful color for one of these. I think the red hubcaps set it off nicely, though.)

This Mopar's styling was so much cleaner looking than the cluttered styling of the '58 model year of full-sized General Motors cars!

The wheelcovers are for a 300 letter series, but a `61-`62 model; not the `58. No worries, they don't detract from the overall beauty of this ULTRA rare 300D!!

    • @autobug2

As with the `57 model, this 300D was THE most powerful car sold in the US that year. The Vette was faster due to power-to-weight ratio, but nothing more powerful.

Not quite original, a dual brake master cylinder was not available. (Safety being important for modern folks)

  • @dehoedisc7247
    @dehoedisc7247 6 років тому

Master cylinder not original, Chrysler obviously believed that the braking system was just fine the way it was designed. (And as far as being safer to "drive" this machine, do you really think that someone is going to take this beautiful ultra-rare classic out to mix with the everyday traffic and risk possible damage to it's pristine body? It's virtually a museum piece that didn't need a non-stock master cylinder.)
