I saw The Northman a couple of days ago and quite enjoyed Robert Eggers new film. Did you like The Northman and how would you rank it in comparison with The Witch and The Lighthouse?
Just saw it in Uppsala, and was blown away! Such a well told story, such amazing music and production design, so many fun mythic/ritualistic/cultural details! To fresh in my mind to rate against The Witch and The Lighthouse. I really loved them all; Eggers' movies always have such attention to detail and are so fantastically immersive.
🎶🎼 *_La Música_* 🎼🎶 Since 2021, I'd wondered what kinda score/soundscapes *Robin Carolan* _(the former Tri Angle Records)_ and *Sebastian Gainsborough* _(Vessel)_ would compose for the various scenes throughout this tale. If there is wonderfully fitting passionate/powerful music, it is good that the trailers understated drum patterns haven't given anything away at this early point. I definitely liked/loved Robin Carolan's work on Björk's _'Vulnicura'_ 🎶.
Awesome movie. Sad to see it failing at the box office. At least I did my part, buying tickets and not being able to make it due to work overhours two times. Third time worked, and it was glorious. I hope this financial failure doesn't set Egger's career back too much. He's 3 for 3, an absolute genius.
I don't remember any of the film being set in Ireland? It starts in Scandinavia then moves to Russia and then Iceland so not sure where you got Ireland from other than one of the slaves in Iceland was potentially Irish
@@danielpuckett8291 Hmm. Give it a try. I converted to it and it’s actually the quickest growing religion in the world and it has the most converts according to Pew Research. I have a playlist called Some Evidence for Islam.

Just watched this movie earlier today and first impressions were it was too slow. I liked that the film really captured the culture of this time period for the northern peoples. The movie felt raw and not so modern influenced like you said. After hearing your review I can see that the movie was more than I thought from a surface level. From a very casual movie watcher's point-of-view I gave it a 7/10 .
I heard so many reviews that crapped on this movie for reasons I couldn't see myself after seeing it. This movie should catapult Eggers to the top of the heap of modern directors. He's earned his right with his incomparable ability to build atmosphere.
I knew this was going to be based on Hamlet, yet that didn't do anything to make this movie any less of a JOY. Seriously, I left the theatre not twenty minutes ago, and I had to put on SKÁLD just to hang onto that feeling of awesome.
See I really want to watch it because it looks good, but I heard about all the nudity in it. That’s going to be extremely awkward if I watch it with my mom who usually goes with me to movies.

If you have seen the lion king there is no need to watch this film... Even the fight at the end by the volcano is a copy paste... Wtf is going in with this critics....
Very disappointing, any chapter of Vikings or The last Kingdom is better than this movie. Boring with a lot of fillers, the dialogs seem to be directly read from the paper, not fluid at all. At the begging I thought they were English as they did not looked like vikings at all and then surprise yes they are the vikings WTF! Extremely predictable. Ok to watch on TV if you don't have much to do on a Sunday afternoon, but definitively not a masterpiece at all...
@@billhoop281 It is a rather average movie. There were some plot choices made that ranged from stupid and cheap to nonsensical and confusing (and not in a good Robert Eggers way). Characters were rather standard, and the romance felt extremely forced. Magic in this movie was done badly too. Where's in previous movies Eggers presented magic as something mysterious and dark, here it came off more high fantasy like, which didn't really fit the atmosphere. Also it didn't really play a role in the story except as deus ex machina. Some aspects of viking culture were also not explained very well or at all, this wouldn't be a problem if it didn't play a role in the movie. The biggest problem with the movie was its lenght honestly, it should have been a half an hour shorter, there were scenes that dragged out way more than they should, and if they shortened those it would have been much more tight and enjoyable.
I just don't care for most of Robert Eggers' filmmaking trademark tableaux flourishes and vignatted motifs. I think they're obnoxiously masturbatorial and just flatout tedious. I'm going to checkout The Northman, but I've got tempered expectations.

Went to see it twice this week, both times it really stayed with me afterward, directors like him need to be supported

What I liked was how refreshingly simple the story is.
Alright, I’ll definitely have to give it a watch then! The look and sound of the trailer very strongly turned me onto it.
We won’t see it before May 22 here in France…
I’m so hyped for this film!
And your review gets me even more hopeful man!
THIS MOVIE IS ON PAR WITH SPARTACUS, ZULU, BEOWULF AND GLADIATOR. IT WAS A BEAST
After The Batman, this is my most anticipated movie of the year.
Hope you enjoy it!

Definitely gotta go see this. I saw the Lighthouse and loved it. I'm interested to see Eggers' take on a viking story.

Great review. One note though, Hamlet was inspired by a Nordic legend (this one), not the other way around
What I liked about The Northman is that it captured human nature in all aspects. It was like peering into the soul of humanity itself.
