Robert Eggers on The Northman & How Theatrical Release is His Director’s Cut

- With The Northman opening in theaters this weekend, I recently spoke to director Robert Eggers about making his action-filled epic. During the interview, Eggers talked about how he filmed the invasion of a village as a oner, and how it was like choreographing a musical but with a “lot more blood,” what were the toughest aspects of making the story as authentic as possible, the challenges he ran into in the editing room, how the release is his director’s cut and why you won’t see a longer cut on the Blu-ray, writing the screenplay with Sjón, and why he thanked Ari Aster, Chris Columbus, and Alfonso Cuarón in the credits. In addition, he talked about his desire to do a third New England folk horror film at some point and why he loved the immersive quality and audio separation of the Dolby Atmos mix.
The Northman follows a young Viking prince (Alexander Skarsgård) on his quest to avenge his father’s (Ethan Hawke) murder. The fantastic film also stars Nicole Kidman, Claes Bang, Anya Taylor-Joy, Björk, and Willem Dafoe.
Check out what he had to say in the player above, or you can read our conversation below. Finally, I strongly recommend seeing The Northman in a movie theater. Eggers has crafted an epic that deserves to be seen on the biggest and loudest screen in your area.

Just came from seeing this film. Wow. An absolute feast for norse mythology and culture enthusiasts. A tried and true story made even more fantastic with Egger's style. Breathtaking visuals. Blood boiling action. Superb acting. If you haven't already, Go. See. This. Film.
Dude shut up. My God
I just did last night. An absolute masterpiece, and I'm praying it does well enough at the box office because we need more works of art from the genius that is Robert Eggers.
Robert Eggers is honestly now up there in my favorite directors of all time, in 3 movies! 3 near 10/10's! The Northman was a masterpiece. I am definitely going to the theater to see it again.
I went in with no trailer and only knowing it was Eggers and about mythology. I really enjoyed it and it deserves to be seen on the big screen. Still waiting for his version of Nosferatu
Took the words out of my mouth ♥️
Word on the street is, the project is cancelled since Harry Styles backed out
Three extraordinary films, this one an undisputed masterwork. Ravishing in every detail. And Eggers is only 38. What brilliant contributions to the history of film lie ahead for this young genius?
I think he's on his way to being one of the greats. I'd love to see him tackle more genres and cultures. There's something about his approach that is just so incredibly immersive.
I saw it last night and bro, you nailed it. It's predictable, which is kind of a given saying is how it's based on one of the most famous stories ever told, so when those moments that you know are coming come, they need to hit with that right weight. And they do. 10 out of 10. Keep an eye on Eggers, he's going places.
This movie and the Batman were my two anticipated movies of the year. And I can’t wait to sit down in the theatre this Friday and watch this cinematic masterpiece
Same, they’re both my anticipated movies of the year, and also my most anticipated TV shows of the year is: House Of The Dragon the prequel series to Game Of Thrones, and Season 3 of The Mandolorian
@@brysonfreeman3526 Just saw it and it was INCREDIBLE possibly the best film that will come out this year
Batman was absolutely TERRIBLE. Jesus don't even get me started. And I'm not an MCU fan, nor a Snyder fan. I was very excited for it. Absolute MESS of a movie. Ffs.
The Northman will redeem everything I'm hoping. Very excited
That’s an odd pairing, sir Andrew. The Bat Man was horribly antiWhite!
@@jilliestorm9079 I’m sorry what? Just want to make sure that I read your comment correctly the Batman was anti white what in the hell does that mean
Eggers is always giving me things I never thought I’d get to see onscreen. In the VVitch it was actually seeing a witch use a flying ointment to fly, and now Berserkers in the Northman. We are not worthy.😭
Can you explain what the Berserkers are ? I just watched the movie and absolutely loved it and attention to detail :)
@@danielmarron3508 they are warriors who go into a frenzy before fighting
Steve Weintraub is a great interviewer. There's no ego, he's not trying to like be all buddy-buddy with the people, or show off with these ridiculously weird questions. Just straight forward questions about the film that people want to hear.
At the same time, I'd love to see Robert Eggers on Hot Ones and deal with Sean's out-of-left-field questions.
I was thinking this same thing. The interviewer didn't make it about himself. Solid interview.
My thoughts exactly, just a very well conducted interview and questions that show he's really interested and not just checking the boxes. Well done.
Damn, this guy asked some solid questions.
I’m glad that this movie is the final cut. It’s pure perfection.
I was sitting there watching the movie when I suddenly realized it is almost a Norse version of Oedipus Rex. That made me love the movie so much more than I already did. I know it's supposed to be based off Hamlet, but it really gave me the same feeling I had when I first read Oedipus Rex.
It also has some Macbeth vibes with the three witches.
Amelth is a story from texts found and the story was the basis for the Hamlet play
@@virusklaxsosaur4054 I was talking with a guy working at the theater right before I saw it and he mentioned that Hamlet is just Amleth with the H moved to the front. Mind Blown!
Just got back from watching this and it is so epic! Go see it in the theater as the interviewer is right - the sound design is f'in amazing. Everything else from the historical accuracy to the battle scenes are superb. Thank you to the studio for giving this the green light and for not holding back on the brutality of what that time was like. Go see this!
Loved this film, the production design, the music, the story, all stunning.
This will be the first movie I see on the big screen in years. I vote with my dollars, and this is something I want to see more of.
Truly a visionary director. One of the best working today!
What a down to earth dude, great interview
Best movie of the last 2 years
Can't wait to see it again!
I saw it and loved it. Thank you Robert.
This was a great interview...
Terrific interview. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
The score was great! Pumped up and ruthless!
Great interview
7:25 I hope that the scenes about goddess freya will be on the blu ray. I'm very interested in these things
Watch this thing in the cinema! It's a gorgeous slow burn E P I C !!
great interview!!
This interviewer called Eggers’ single take shot in which an entire village is pillaged “Kinda good..” lmao tough crowd
the wording was a little off but I think he meant that he really enjoyed it.
It was joke
@@xRhychux mine also was joke -_-
hence the lmao
As soon as he said that, I just paused this video to check the comments… I’m like wtf did he really just say that? I realize it was his poor attempt at a joke, but the delivery & tone were wayyyy off & you could tell it took Robert even a min to realize it was a attempt at a joke. Ps I’m kinda annoyed that every press video mentions this sense only…. There were multiple scenes shot in one take style. Robert even was annoyed by it in one of the interview’s & mentioned this himself.
Great, no frills interview
excellent questions
Astonishing film 🎥🏆
Robert, excellent movies ! Please try to get Joaquin Phoenix in your next movie !!
This movie is going to be amazing.
Viking version of The Revenant, can’t wait!
@@theMasterChiefRules was a lesser version of the Revenant imo
@@mikekasabion seen it already?
@@theMasterChiefRules went to the premiere in LA yesterday!
It was really great
1:15 Watched this with my dad and he asked me after what I thought and I said 'I LOVED it.. You?'.. He said.. "I liked it but it was a bit too much..."
I started flailing with "WHAT? THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS 'TOO MUCH'!!".. Etc... Funny his words were echoed here :P
We're both Swedish and history buffs btw which I presume must have influences our takes.. Even though they were different.
I don't really believe there is no such thing as 'too much'.. Btw.. :P When watching like The Avengers and stuff like that a lot of the time I just become exhausted by the noise and the spectacle and when that happens you're kinda tuned out of the experience... That didn't have that at all in this movie, though.
I think it helps you get on board with the whole thing if you're aware that this is how things really went down, at least how it went down in the stories they told.. If not literally.
Can we PLEASE get an Eggers version of Sleepy Hollow?
Movie was awesome. We need more movies that are ACTUALLY good. No more Marvel please lmao
@GiRayne Possibly not. There is not much overlap between these audiences.
@GiRayne no more marvel please
@GiRayne the medium would be richer without marvel
@GiRayne lol you think marvel is art and culture
@GiRayne 'humans' lol. I'm not a human. I'm a man, a person. You wouldn't get it because you have no eternal essence, totally undifferentiated.
Finally something not related to a person in tights
Really would love to know what's next from him. Will he continue to go bigger? Or will he scale it back for his next movie.
I really don’t know if BIGGER would work with his style. Something like this maybe, set in old times; like expanding upon this world I think would’ve worked, but too much and it becomes a different film. A key aspect of his films is the feeling of desolation. I would love for Eggers to do a western with some slight supernatural themes. Maybe something similar to Bone Tomahawk.
His next film is Nosferatu
Eggers looks like King Canute from Vikings Valhalla
What a movie! but, im glad i didnt see the trailers!
Just saw it for 2nd time. Utterly terrific!
Are they referring to Nosferatu at the end? I thought that had gotten canceled.
I hear it is delayed, not canceled.
Saw this yesterday and tbh it feels like a studio cut. It was great, but felt very straightforward and all the times where Eggers usually strays from a predictable formula were cut out.
Yep. A+B=C, is what they want it to be - but that's not for me.
Edit: It wasn't a bad film, but it definitely wasn't as good as it could have been.
@@CreationK. It was that much of an issue that it wasn't good?
As long as it was great, I'm in. Unfortunately sounds like je didn't stray as you said, but I'm still excited
@@el34glo59 Not at all. Still recommended, but not as good as it could have been - as I said in my edited comment.
@@el34glo59 Hope this makes sense :)
GOAT
The only thing I was surprised at, what with Eggers having a reputation for historical accuracy, was that the King is wearing a golden band as a crown. There is no historical data of there being crowns in Norse culture. 🧐
I saw an interview where Eggers said that it was not intended to be a crown, even though the King wears it on his head.
Yes, he said something about knowing people were going to interpret it as a crown, but that it was not his intention or something.
Wasn't his intention
@@mikekasabion what interview is that?
@@enriquebeltran2410 Thank you! Him addressing it makes me happy!
I agree regarding the early comments on the soundtrack - it was too much. It was an assault. Did it add in an essential way to the story? Absolutely. But the film wound up being utterly exhausting, and the soundtrack played a major part.
WARNING - if you haven't seen it, the film is an ordeal. Between the soundtrack and the story, it's....simply brutal. And the story is a tremendous, multi-faceted tragedy as well. Bring some earplugs - you'll need them.
You will remember this film. It's quite impressive.
We need an Eggers x Aster movie ASAP!
Aster's production company helped produce The Northman.
He should do old Japanese mythology/folklore
I'm saddened by how low the movie is performing at the box office. This movie has a waaay bigger budget than his previous films, and they spent years making it, and it turned out to be one of the best things I've watched in some time, but there's not enough people watching it to compensate for that time, money and effort.
Boom, the dudes a badman 3/3 banging movies
I would like to see him do an American Civil War movie.
❤👏👏👏🔥
This is the same guy that Robert got annoyed at for asking about the Northman before it was announced
Is there a video? Would like to see it
@@jl.7739 His lighthouse collider interview skip to the end
Just seen it. Good actors but felt I was wanting it to hurry up and finish. 5/10
Big time John Milius' Conan The Barbarian vibes. Wish they could have done the Conan reboot Egger's way
agreeable ISTP with developed Se and Fe
This movie was just awesome
I thought that was Steve Howey!
Robert eggers should do a R RATED pirate movie
I wish you could have asked if God of War had any influence on the, or provided inspiration. The way that game was developed with the single shot style reminded me a lot of The Northman.
The Witch is a great horror film.
Hope this Movie is a hit so he can go on and make more great movies!
The question is: What Superhero dose he like? 😉
I kinda hope not, the Superhero movie industry seems so limiting
Release the unrated cut where we see the violence.
What a shame this amazing talent to not have artistic freedom.
The studio give him 100% of artistic freedom. That’s why this movie is so amazing. 100% non woke.
If what we saw wasnt artistic freedom i dont know what is lmao
@@Prabzs123 The guy wanted to use the original language, different plot, haircuts, etc
@@dimkilago2958 im glad it was in english tbh. Subtitles take away from the film imo, you’re too busy looking at them instead of the great visuals.
I wish there would be a true director's cut when it comes out on blu ray.
I love how irritated Eggers came across 😂
Lmao well when someone describes an incredibly difficult one shot that you probably worked your ass off to perfect as, “kinda good” I’m sure you’d be a little annoyed
Also with the interviewer having his arms crossed, very poor body language!
Makes sense alfonso cuaron had something to do with it.
That guy is a cinema god
Eggers movies looks to me like he is a son of cuaron and arranofsky
I must watch this iam a pagan Odin is the alfather always want a real life or as close to real life Norse movie
i mean...if he doesn't have dafoe reprise his role then just wtf
my boy… shame no one will watch it… weak advertising
It’s unusual that big studios support movies like that. It’s non woke movie. No forced diversity. No woke racist anti-white agenda like the Batman. Etc.
🙄
Eggers worst film in my opinion. Felt nothing at the end.
This was a very very bad movie 2/10. Way to slow, almost no action. Fell asleep for 5-10 min. When multiple Vicking TV series are way better, something is wrong. They had the budget to make something epic. total fail. Watch it at home, at least you will sleep better on the couch.
😂😂😂 ok man sure sure
lol my man netflix vikings is kindergarden compared with the northman
