Blade safety and easy paint job: 2014 Craftsman T1600 Lawn Tractor

- I got this beat up Craftsman T1600 as a trade in from a customer who was buying my 1998 MTD tractor. The previous owner said it just died on them while mowing. It turned out to be a broken blade safety switch. After bypassing the switch it was mostly smooth sailing from there! This mower turned out to be a great example of a max profit "flip".

Your hand truck is an antique drum truck, and it will carry 500 lb oil drum, that is the reason for the slope on the handle.
G
Very cool! I was hoping someone would have some info on my hand truck
Looks like your do really good there Kyle. One
thing you definitely need to do a better job on, especially when wire wheeling off rusty paint is to put on at least a particle mask or a respirator. I wear a coat, hat, particle mask, full face shield, ear protection an leather gloves. Even if it's Hot out. I am repainting my 2001 MTD Yard Machine right now. Red Apple Gloss. Glad to see your channel working out for you! I'll B watching 👍
Something about a Red Mower💯👍🏾
Agreed! Red sells
Lowe's, Home Depot, and Walmart should still have Rustoleum Regal Red. I've seen it in stock at the local stores near me.
Nicely done with this Craftsman mower!
Thanks
Easy paint job - music to my ears! 😁🔧👍
yep! I think painting can be intimidating for a lot of people. I try to make it simple and show that everyone can do this!
A note for you is I use Turtle Wax Colorback polishing compound and it really cleans up scratched up faded paint. A bit of elbow grease & paint looks alot better. Try it if you want, I think it works great.
Thanks!
That pulley bracket there is suppose to absorb the shock touque load on that pressed thin steel weak built deck on those mowers. It helps the deck drive system so the pulleys don't get pulled and bent, if you hit something as a large ant hill etc,,putting shock load on the belt and pulleys,as they are bolted and mounted on pretty thin deck steel..take that automatic switch under those carbs and grid off the sealing shaft portion and reinstall it and put a manual inline fuel hose carb supply fuel shut off ,those under the carb bowl jet shutoffs are nothing but problems,I do this to all of my mowers and I I've done away with all my fuel supply issues
I like that it has stickers on it. You need to buy more stickers
Always a good idea to wash your back end. 😂
I enjoy your channel Kyle, and look forward to your videos every week. I really hope you gain enough subscribers to quit your day job. This mower turned out nice
That’d be awesome! Haha. Make sure you share my videos then!
Looks great and it'll be a good reliable used mower.
Thank you!
Thank you!
Great job! Only thing my old would have a problem with is not removing the spindles before paint and putting a date and hours on the oil filter. Just my opinion and what I would do. Keep those vids coming!!
Yup, I would have serviced the spindles and idlers as well as dating the filter.
Good Job..it does look much better, and I am sure someone will be very happy with it - the Red Match Paint is Rustoleum TOOL BOX RED for a Craftsman Red garden tractor It is what I use. Not Orange or pink at all - Not that it matters at all but just say'n.. thanks for the video I did enjoy it.
Thanks!!
You gotta love the easy fixes!
Looks great just little bit like mask the washer bit of great job and when cleaning the decks off use a mask all that dust will get you in a few years and you don't no what's on the deck keep the good stuff coming...
I don’t always use a mask while grinding the deck. I know people like to give that advise, but you won’t always see me with one. Just so you know
@@Kylebythecreek think of your lungs just saying it will get you in later years like it has me be safe buddy
Right there with you on people telling me I’m always doing it wrong. Great work as always. Turned out looking good and hope the summer is treating you well 😎
Thanks Alex! You do great work! Better than me by a long shot. Keep it up!
Serviced every year. Of the Ming era.
Compression on that engine is good, being that it has a compression release on it, it's good, just like another good video from @kylebythecreek, love the repairs dude! Keep em coming
Hi there! Thanks so much!
Looks good from where I am sitting. Hope you make a bunch. Did you ATF the slow leaking tire?
Yeah, I forgot - what about that leaking tire, Kyle? 😉
@@Rein_Ciarfella yeah I used atf. Solved it
Like the episode still working on getting into YouTubing it’s a for sure learning experience as I’ve been tinkering on mowers since I got out of high school always makes you feel good helping people out with there lawn equipment and seeing there satisfaction you do great work
The only thing I would have done differently is when painting I would have removed and painted the tension brackets then when putting them back on greased or lubricated them to cut down on future rust.
Thanks for the comment!
Probably should stay away from using grease on moving components. Works great as a lubricant but also attracts dirt/dust/debris. Dry lube like graphite spray would be better suited for such things. Great video though. I injoyed the close up look at those somewhat of older style decks while on a newer style mower body. Started watching for the paint job though. Was hoping to see this style mower in a different color than red. I have a 2021 model with the hydrostatic trans and I hate the color red. Other than that I do like the mower. Luckily the ones with the hydrostatic trans are built better than those variable speed versions.
I used red on the deck because the rest of the mower was red
There is something to be said for your method of painting a deck. The last one I did I stripped all the loose stuff down to bare metal, primed, top coated and three clearcoats. TBH, the way these machines are used most of the time I think it was way overkill and certainly too time consuming for what I could charge. Next time - “Kyle’s Way”! 😉👍
Just a quick coat. Sometimes I do prime it and do multiple coats. But this time I didn’t
You kinda over did it but it’s your call and it’s done right 😊
@@philliphall5198 It’s interesting. Some will say I should have done way more. And some will say I did too much. Hopefully I found a happy middle ground. Either way, the tractor is already sold and gone!
Paint works wonders on any thing no matter what it is and red mowers just sale better than yellow
Agreed!
I miss the A.Y.P made craftsman made Lt and GT series mowers/ tractors M.T.D made mowers can be testie when you work on them
AYP were better for sure 😊
@@philliphall5198 you definitely got that right Phillip Husqvarna made great riding mowers for a long time but they started to make the frame so cheap they would break and cause the tractor to mess up when you are using it, 😞
@@robertmailhos8159yes I have a small engine shop and it’s common to have one break and have to be plated, cheap junk now 😢😢😢
Murray did have great frames and never broke 😊
Hey Kyle, have you ever tried the Spray and Wax on the mowers? I've started using it on my push, and walk behinds I work on, and honestly it's great! It does a fantastic job polishing things up without much work... I just mean instead of using ATF.. probably be less expensive, and less work, since you just spray it on, and... Wipe it off, the water beads off it after..
Just a suggestion, as ATF is also pretty carcinogenic.
I could look into it. Never heard of it.
Kyle, did I understand that you used Marvel Mystery oil to shine this thing up? Metal, plastic parts, or both? Good video!
That’s correct. Just like using wd 40 or ATF. It’s what I had, and it worked great for a temporary shine
Argh! That machine was working perfectly fine with a 40 micron fuel filter and you replaced it with one which will allow a lot more fines into the carb! Saw that and groaned. Many say gravity feed needs the 150 micron. Baloney!
I think it’ll be fine
I would assume since the paint was Rust Kill, that's why it's RK Red
I don’t know. Usually this Majic paint has names like MF Red. Meaning: Massey Ferguson Red
@@Kylebythecreek I'm by no means a paint expert. I just assumed the letters matched. Keep up the good content!!
Hey Kyle just being nosy,,, but what are the rocks lined up in a couple of places in your yard? Maybe drainage to the Creek..
Stone walls? Not sure what you mean
Looks good. I would have wrote hours & date on oil filter
No hour meter. But, yes the date would be good
What would it take to fix the safety switch? If someone gets hurt because it bypassed, that would be bad.
I completely agree! Seat safety is one thing but PTO safety is another order of dangerousness.
Switch is 12 bucks or 20 of them for 9.75 😊
@@philliphall5198
I think it was the mount that failed.
I sold it to a friend. He’s good with it
quanto costa compresa spedizione in italia grazie risposta gradita
Never in my life have I broke a spark plug, much less on these toy engines. The rubber grommet has nothing to do with breakage. It is to extract the spark plug from the well. Which again is a non issue on these toy engines.
I appreciate your comment.
Man I feel bad for the one u sold he doesn't seem to take care of his stuff
They actually brought this machine to the shop whenever there was a problem. But most repair shops don’t clean it or do anything more than get it up and running again. They might not even service the machine if the owners ask for the bare minimum. You can tell by the old spark plug and oil filter that whatever work was done on this machine was just the absolute minimum to keep it running and cutting grass
@@Kylebythecreek looks forward to ur videos bro their awesome
@@jp-us9rq so glad to hear! Thank you very much!
I want to repair lawn mowers
Let me know if I can help!
Those shaker can paints cost $$$$ way to much for just a few oz's of paint. Buy qts and thin it and brush it on heavy as it'll last much longer than the can paint $$$ junk
Just going for a quick flip. I agree the cans are expensive, but I’m still making a really good profit on these machines and so I don’t mind getting the cans, especially since the rattle cans offer a better variety of colors than the qts.
it is a lawn mower - who cares what color it is
My thoughts exactly, but when you’re trying to flip equipment you have to think about perception. Visuals are what sell.
People care
@@Rein_Ciarfella absolutely. If you’re trying to sell it, then people definitely care. If you’re keeping it for yourself, then paint it whatever color you want. When I sell equipment in Connecticut I see how much people care about paint and appearances- almost more than how it runs or how it was serviced- kinda crazy really
And RED is the most popular and easiest color to sell @Kylebythecreek
@@rickbroerman9267 that’s definitely correct!
Should I drive 1hr 44 to get a really nice kubota t1400 for 75 or get a crappy poulan for 50 that's an hour away they both have minor problems just don't really know what one would be better
Kubota is a much better brand than Poulan. But without any other info, pics, or video, I can’t say for sure which is a better purchase
@@Kylebythecreek how could I send them to you?
@@gibleboris what do you mean?
