Husqvarna Mower Backfiring: Repair Attempt Part 1

- This riding mower engine shoots flames out through the carb when starting. I found a couple problems by just looking at the engine. See if I can get this running without starting a fire. I replace one part and then adjusted another part. This was at a mower repair shop and the customer decided not to continue with repairs. so now, I get to check it out.
I've been using business cards go gap a coil for 50 years and never had a problem my friend.
It’s all over used for 60 years now and I think it’s proved it’s self sufficient and cheap 😊😊😊
Business card does a good job!
To chase the spark plug hole, just take an angle grinder and make a small cut at a diagonal on the end threads of an old spark plug. Thread in and out until the threads are chased like new.
As for the engine hunting, the problem is due to the Chinese aftermarket carburetor - which I call a Chi-Nikki version. Many of these need the pilot jet to be enlarged which will provide additional fuel to alleviate the hunting. Sometimes other jets need to be enlarged but the normal culprit is the internal pilot jet.
Hi, that is a good idea about making a tap. The new carbs are made to run so lean that its hard to get a steady idle on some. So I will be addressing that issue also.
That will work ok, but the correct tool is 15 bucks or 3./4 40 years ago 😊 it’s best to chase it anyway if you think it’s strange coming out 😊

It’s just a tad of medicine money for me so I don’t push myself because I’ve been doing mechanic work all my life and was raised in a shop also

I just picked up a YTA1946 Husqvarna from a neighbor and the BACK STORY was he went out to start it one morning and when he turned the key smoke came out from behind the dash. He put it out back and went into town and bought a new mower. So I asked him what he wanted for it and he told me to just come and get it. So I go there and I see oil everywhere and the top cover was sitting on top of the engine and all the bolts are missing...hmmm. Now I'm pretty sure I turned the engine by hand to make sure it wasn't seized and it was ok, or maybe I turned it just enough, now I'm not sure. I went back two days later to pick it up and we load it up and I take it home. After unloading it, I removed the hood to find it's covered in sludge by the dip stick tube and the tube is now lying beside the motor and the engine no longer turns more than a third of a turn in either direction and then you here the sound of a broken connecting rod. Now it WAS FREE so I'm out nothing, but now I need another 19HP engine. Oh well, Gotta love the back stories.
When I buy anything that is 6 years old I expect the engine to be junk and it’s only a part machine and scraper 😢 They know that a new engine is not worth it and buying new is what they are doing 😢😢😢
Fixing the market is a priority for them 😢
I get most of my mowers directly from homeowners, so I usually get a story from them about what happened. More often than not, the story does not support what I find broken and worn out.
Business card or your driver's license will also work that's about 12 South that's what bridge gives you in a coil

I think it's that crappy chinesium carb. Any time I've tried to use one I got a similar result - I could get it to run OK, but not nearly as good as the original. Always clean and rebuild the original carb if you can.
I bought one of those on Amazon for about $35 and it worked for a little while but I ended up getting an OEM for a lot more. Works better. I saw a video by Chickanic who does these too. She warned never to buy these on eBay or Amazon as the just don't work. I wish I had seen that video sooner. Oh well, you live you learn.
It’s cheaper in the long run to go oem or rebuild the old oem carb
I use sonic cleaner but if I have trouble then it’s going into acid and that’s the end of the problem 😊😊😊
Also need to replace that cheap red screen filter with a real fuel filter. That's possibly how the surge problem started with dirt getting through.
I agree with you, but it’s usually the dam corn gas that messes up the carb and hoses 😮
Most fuel hose is junk now even 😢

I do prefer the paper filters, but I dont worry about using this style filter. there is a follow up video for this. In the end, it actually ran good.
Any piece of card stock will work from around the house like from a cereal box or frozen pizza box. It’s not really that critical as long as there’s an air gap. It’s a Briggs Intek single which isn’t exactly the pinnacle of modern engineering.
True, by this point briggs was specializing in de-engineering, like most of the industry.
Are you sure it's a spark issue and not a carburetor problem?
Thanks for the comment, there is a carb issue, but I think the main problem could be intermittent spark. I will be working on the carb soon.

I just fought a backfire issue on my old JD.
Did not confirm with spark tester, but I have had plenty of carbs that would surge like crazy and still not backfire. I will be checking valve clearances too. But the bad plug wire was definitely suspect, and it was easy to swap in another that I had already.
I am Not an expert. What I know about small engines wouldn't fill a pamphlet.
I did, however, find on a new carburetor
pin holding the float had come partly out.
Causing massive flooding and backfiring.

Carb needs acid dip or drill it out
You can also replace the terminals you can get a box of the terminals at your local NAPA Auto parts store and you don't need the boot to be on there or you can tell me some boot from an old set of plug wires
HI you are correct, but I was concerned that the insulation on the wire may have been damaged by heat too. And I had another coil to try.

I really feel like it was a spark problem. In the end, it did actually run pretty good, without changing anything else. there is a part 2 video now.
Need more practice with working with Camara placement,saw lots of shots of right elbow than shots of left hand,take lessons from Mustie 1, he has camera usage down so everyone can see what is going on
There's a bigger learning curve than you realize. The pros make it look easy. Some even have the luxury of a camera person.

I’ve been making more medicine money on 2 stroke engines rebuilding fuel systems than riding mowers because of the bad engine design 😢😢😢
Were running out of flat heads to replace the junk 😢
Yeah, those flathead engines would go forever.
