I personally think he raised this song to a new level. It's like he's calling us to arms. I agree with you, I think this is better than the original. The music really helped elevate this version as well.
Paul Simon agrees. Even going so far as to say the original is a caution contrasted with the cover being a warning.
It is the way tje shouls have been arranged and presented back in the 60s, it at least matches the words. It is a masterpiece.

I've found that this hits so differently simply because of the generational difference. S&G brought the idealism and hope from the 60s to this song.... and now...well...it's all the anger and angst and disillusionment we have experienced since then that comes through .
My SIL and her husband are heavy metal fans, and she sent it to us when the video first dropped. Before I watched it I was borderline pissed, then I watched it. It literally left me speechless, and still does. Not only that, it chokes me up, as I am now.

I've heard this song since I was a kid. My mother loved S&G. I saw this live the first time in 2016. It made me cry standing in the middle of 12000 people. I have since seen it live 3 more times, I still tear up. David is a real artist. And he pours his soul into that song every performance. Glad to see it moved you a well, it seems to be music is the only thing these days that actually let's us feel something together. Regardless of our differences. You should really go to a Disturbed show if you've never been.

I appreciated how he used his voice and instruments to help emphasize words and phrases. The soft baritone to set the scene so to speak. Then one by one the acoustic guitar, then string followed by singing an octave higher build the urgency and drama. The primal drums beating out a warning and a rage that has you as on edge as the rasp in his voice. And the climax as clear as crystal making the hair on the back of your neck stand up. A feast for the mind and the ears. Thank you Disturbed.

6:30 the sudden softening on "tenement halls" is breathtaking. Like the angry angel must whisper gently around sleeping poor children, reserving wrath for the powerful.
Yeah, that softening was much better than the studio (music video) version where he waited until the very end to soften up. in this version it really shows that the rasp was controlled and on purpose...

2 Jewish songwriters writing in 1964, the generation of Jews raised after the Holocaust might, just might not have been about gods message. And considering anti semitism was raising its ugly head again around the time of this version, again by a Jewish man, think he was protesting in song, not talking about god

Having grown up with the S&G version I can say that I prefer this one. David brings the emotion...the angst that the lyrics convey.

I love Disturbed interpretation of this song, it is really spot on to how we are today with social media people sit down in the restaurant and never look up from their phone at the person they’re sitting at the table with there’s no face-to-face communication

This live version brings this song to a new level. I know S&G originally wrote this song and sung it but this hit home in a new way for the now times. I agree with you that it's different and more relevant to us now. This version speaks to our souls now.

You hit 100% on the head, Simon & Garfunkel's original version was a warning about society losing it's ability to communicate and David's version has more emphasized that warning.

I actually feel he held back in this version compared to his video. Your righr about the comparison of how Simon and Garfunkel sang it, they did no justice to what the message needed to convey. I don't know if you seen the video but it cuts right through you and the prophetic words hit you with such a force. It's amazing. I waited 45 yrs to hear someone do this song justice! It was worth it!!!
David had to change the way he sang this song because he had a lesion on one of his vocal chords at the time. He explains it during his interview on "The Charismatic Voice" channel (I have a short version on my channel).

I see you just reacted to Hold Onto Memories (great choice by the way), but, if you’re still looking for other songs of Disturbed’s to listen to, “The Light” and “A Reason to Fight” would probably be great ones to do. They both highlight David’s voice and are more melodic/less heavy than a lot of their other songs.

I'd had NO knowledge of the original recording until AFTER I'd heard the new remake's of the song. Listen to the vergen sang by Pentatonix, an Acapella group. Disturbed (to me) gives the best message!

So my husband was open to listen to Disturbed (he was 67 when he passed away) That rendition makes me cry every single time I hear it because of David’s power and passion. I had to see if it touched Eddie’s soul the way it touched mine. And he had tears flowing and thanked me. I would love to tell David just how powerful that song is but I don’t want to tweet or anything that would have people (you know how some people are) say anything hateful or negative. We talked about what our life for the past 40 years had been. The good times seemed to always be when we were in the “lean” years. Funny how the best times are when you have nothing. He started a very successful business and times were not tight- but we did realize that the best times we remembered were the times we counted change to get a hamburger. Thank you for letting me ramble on and on. Today is the day he passed away 4 years ago.

I resisted listening to this for so long because I love S&G's version so much, but once I heard Disturbed's version, I love it just as much, if not more!
