Mesal Gear Solid is a bonus mode in the third game where you play as Snake Monkey on a mission to save Snake.
I also loved how if you crouch, the music will change its tone.
That little attention to detail for the OST is really appreciated.

Yeah and only the first one did it properly. 2 and 3 just made the music quieter in terms of volume, Ape Escape 1 actually took away instruments and left just a quiet basic tempo of the music left. It is freaking awesome!

Ape Escape is one of the greatest platformers ever... Man, so many obscure or niche platformers that are great... Mischief Makers, Jumping Flash, Croc, Klonoa, Chameleon Twist, Plok, Mr. Gimmick, Jazz Jackrabbit...

I would add High seas havoc and maybe Tomba. I cant think of any other good 3D platformers.

It's not underrated. Nor is it overlooked. It's in this wierd Gray area where it's not famous and it's not criminally overlooked. This leads it to not be talked about much. It just exists. It's something everyone knows about but nobody talks about for some reason. Like the goldilocks of recognition. The perfect amount of recognition to just not be talked about.
Ape Escape was a childhood favorite. So glad I can get some fresh content on it.
When AntDude was describing easy to catch monkeys in this game, it's like he was describing a lot of the moons in Super Mario Odyssey.

I actually recently replayed this one and you pretty much nailed exactly how I feel about it, complaints and all.
It does hold up quite well still, and its soundtrack is one of my favorites. We need more.

Whenever I try to enter Europe an invisible wall just straight up blocks me. Makes plane rides awkward.
As someone who has never played an Ape Escape game (I know, shame on me), I think my favorite things about this game is that it (at least seems to) has the manic energy of a good saturday-morning cartoon.
The Ape Escape trilogy are some of my favorite platformers. Ape Escape 2 is one of my favorite games ever.
I keep telling my friend that ape escape 2 is not that bad...he just really hates Jimmy. I prefer the first and 3rd game overall. Spike is the man and Yumi is best girl. The music in the 2nd game was not done by Soichi Terada so it lost some of that Ape Escape vibe for me.

I still havent played this game to this day, but always remembered the name because my 7 year old brain went crazy trying to figure out why I couldnt move. I don't remember how I found out I needed a different controller, but I do remember being crushed 😂
when my psp worked i played ape escape: on the loose and i had a blast.....then my psp broke
While you did mention it briefly, one thing I found interesting to learn recently is it turns out the game got a separate English dub in the UK with British voice actors. I also know this happened with Ape Escape 2 as well and there's a very weird thing to note about the version of the game that's available as a download on PSN. The version of Ape Escape 2 on PSN is the European version so it uses the British dub, but the trophies in the game still reference the American dub, making me think someone at Sony America put the wrong ISO file on PSN and just couldn't be arsed to change it later (or at least offer the option to switch the dubs, because one reason why I want to play the American dub of Ape Escape 2 is they got the original voice of Ash Ketchum to voice the main character in that game, which makes the Pokemon reference in this video's title even more amusing).
I wonder what their obsession is with European ROMs. Wasn't the PSClassic filled with them?
@Poison Licensing issues with Ubisoft is the reason Sony couldn't sell the U.S. English version of Ape Escape 2 in the U.S.; hence, they were forced to use the UK version.
With all the Sony Remakes happening , i have absolutely no Doubt that a Ape Escape remake will happen.😄👌

Same here, they're my most played N64 games, I've probably beaten all three at least ten times each, even 120 cards and all custom parts on expert in 64.
I feel like most people would think the first Bomberman 64 has aged, and isn't fun to 100% but I keep coming back to it.

10:13 not to mention that in most of the less open ended levels like tic toc clock you have to do the same path over and over again when if the stage didint kick you out you could have grabbed all of the stars in one go.

Maybe the reason that Jake was named Buzz in Europe was because outside of the two spikes in the middle, his hair looks "buzzed." That way, his name would match with Spike, the guy who has completely spikey hair.

I will hugely argue that most of the monkeys have different ways of approaching them that makes them super fun to catch without it getting super repetitive. So while it’s true it is repetitive, I think a lot of the charm comes from what the monkey does, how it reacts to you, and where it is in the stage that makes the repetitive nature of catching or collecting something more interesting and developed with its charm.

I remember this game. The sounds was loud the voices grateing the controls a cluster fuck and the monkeys a pain in the ass but I loved every second of it. I even remember useing the toy car to ram into the monkeys as i jump from tree tops to do a leaping catch.

but damn, you just made me remember this damn cool game. this was basically my Crash/Spyro from PS1, since i never played any of those two until the PS2 era (at least with Crash, never played Spyro).
i loved this game to death as a kid. one of my favorite PS1 games ever.
More people do need to play Klonoa. I remember this is the first game I played that NEEDED a twin stick controller. I remember renting it at the local video game store, and the person behind the counter was like "do you have a duel stick controller? you can't rent this without one"

Ape Escape is one of my all time favorite games. I love that you played Crumbling Castle in the background of the video, which is my favorite song of the game.
Note on the minigames, as solo playing games, they are kind of meh, but in 2 player, they are a lot of fun, especially for people back then who didn't have many games to play.
A (ski) racing game, a fighting game and an arcade shooter might not seem like a lot today, but back then it added a lot of variety.
Never played Ape Escape even being an avid playstation fan growing up, so thanks for the video Antdude!
Thinking back i think Ape Escape was the game that got me use to the analog sticks
one of my favorite series ever, i played a lot of ape escape 2 and 3 as a kid so they are my favorites! ape escape 2 introduces proper boss fights and ape escape 3 introduces transformations that give you powers for a while
this series is just super fun and silly and the music and level design is great! playing these always cheer me up
Ape Escape was developed by SCE Japan Studio, Shift, h.a.n.d and epics, Sony and Ubisoft were just the Publishers.
Ape Escape 1 was developed by internal development team at SCEI. Yoshida's group was splitted up into three teams. The Legend of Dragoon, Sarugechu (Ape Escape) and ICO. Ape Escape 2 and 3 were developed by a different team with some same staff from Ape Escape 1. EyeToy: Ape Escape was developed by a different team.
H.a.n.d made the PSP remake of Ape Escape 1.
Shift made Ape Academy and Ape Quest. Toshiyuki Yasui was the main planner who ended up to create Freedom Wars.
2001, Million Monkeys and Racing were made by epics.
I remember playing the demo of Ape Escape 2 all the time when I was little. The farthest I got was when you get to that submarine 😂 also the opening theme was very catchy!
Ape Escape 3 is one my favorite games of all time, so I’d absolutely love if they made some kind of Recaptured Trilogy.
I really hope they include PipoSaru Racing in it as a bonus, though.
