They have yet to make a Gentle Man robot master. I mean the pun is right there, and if the design were to turn being a bit silly, he could just be made into an Easter egg joke boss. If not, maybe an npc - like a shopkeep or upgrade merchant.
8:44 "Remember when I said you should start off at Cold Man? Because he's the only one that's actually kind of decent." I'd disagree. While yes, most of the bosses in this game are disasters, Ground Man is an absolutely excellent robot master. His pattern (save for the Spread Drill attack, which can feel inconsistent at times) is top-notch, his attacks are clearly telegraphed, his fight is very rewarding to learn, and the Pirate Bomb is an absolute joy to use against him, should you choose to go with his weakness. Attaching a bomb to him and having him try to burrow underground, only to get launched out by an explosion is just the cherry on top.

I vividly remember playing and beating the GBA version of this game when I was in my teenage years because I was obsessed with Battle Network Bass at the time. Looking back now through this video...I have no idea how I managed that.
I love this game to pieces. I had the GBA version when it came out, and I beat the SNES version when I was in high school. I still listen to the soundtrack regularly. I have played all of the main series and this title is my favorite. It just stands out for me. I think the game was designed around playing as Bass. I think playing as Megaman should be viewed as a hard mode.
I love it too, the difficulty is so good, it is what I want in my games, a good challenge, beat it easily with Rock and it is a blast, favorite of the classic series, too also the OST a banger
This is one of my favorite game in the series. MegaMan wasn't known to be an easy game. Would say that MegaMan 1-6, 9-10 is more difficult easily. So I'm not sure how this can be considered bad if those are good.
This whole game is like that, the solutions aren't obvious, it's more like a punishing puzzle platformer.. That instant kill fire? Ice pillar is just tall enough and lasts long enough to stand on to avoid it, I don't know of anyone who figured that out though, everyone just brute forces it and rams into the cannons.
@@JetWolfEX they gave you an extra life exactly so it wouldn't be punishing. They use the ballons later in the stage. And guess what, antdude didn't show footage of them. You know why he didn't? Because he learned how balloons work because the game **forced him to learn** without taking lives away from him. It may be bad design to have a life + death trap setup, but it's stupid to ignore why it was done and how it helped you. It makes you look oblivious. Both antdude and you two are doing it.
Giving an extra life just because they knew it was too difficult is bad level design. Instead of finding a way for the player to get it right on the first try if they notice what to do, they give you an extra life because they know you're probably gonna get killed first time around, and didn't bother trying to make that part actually decently designed
@@megaedge2762 haha you forgot the robot masters (not tengu man and astro man) and cold mans slow thing so lol, this is wrong, this is no longer invaild
Interesting video, however I do have to say that a lot of your complaints about MM&B can be directly applied to several numbered NES entries as well. With the exception of the first two games, the boss weaknesses are often really hard to guess, and memorization as well as cheap deaths are almost part of the experience. As an example for this comparison, I will take Mega Man 3. Since I thought checking the weaknesses in the database of the legacy collection or on the wiki was cheap, it took me forever just to finish the first two levels. I had to constantly try out different robot masters to see if they could be weak against my stuff only to die to some petty trap halfway through and get a game over. And that's not even talking about the Doc Robot levels, where you have no checkpoints for the first part boss included, meaning you have to do the entire level again if you die against the boss, and the bosses are basically beefed up versions of the eight MM2 robot masters. It. is. tedious beating all of them. Then there's the point of cheap traps and hard sections. I think the balloon section looks alright, specially compared to the rush jet/marine sections of the Doc Robot stages where you get one shot to do it, since your meter will be too low to attempt it again after respawning and the upgrades won't respawn with you, basically rendering your lives after dying at this part useless as you have to do the entire level from scratch. Compared to that bullsh*t the balloons look rather fine, especially since you won't lose much progress since they're at the beginning. Basically, MM&B is hard, yes. I am not here to deny that. I will say, however, that so are the main line games. You will die a lot and have lots, and lots, and lots of game over screens if you play without a walkthrough. But as you repeat these levels, you become increasingly better at them and start understanding the level design more to the point that parts you found to be hard will appear as easy at the end of a playthrough of any Mega Man game. I think passing off MM&B just because of its difficulty isn't really justified at all if you consider that exact point to be what many like about the series.
I think a lot of the problem is that people grew up with the older mega man games. They have nostalgia for the games and played them when they were younger and more patient. They no longer notice the cheap traps, strange design flaws, and unfair level design, because they've known the tricks to get around it their whole lives. But they dont think about it that way, so when they see the same problems in a game they're not familiar with they don't compare them.
I actually just replayed this for the first time in like 8 years, last week, so the timing of this review was pretty cool! That said, I really enjoy this game and many of the things you found frustrating I didn't, whether that's because I'm just used to it/remember them, or expect memorization bullshit in Megaman games. I dunno! Didn't bug me. Either way, cool review!
@Speedo Sausage I know. My profile picture used to be Sora from kingdom hearts, then I changed it to Shantae but due to the 90 days thing I can't change my name Yet.
Idk man, I played this waaay back when I first found out about emulation and I remember liking it a lot. I just started it again on my Pi, but given, I’m into Bass and that’s how I played it back then and now I’m more of an X fan, and Bass plays much more like X than MM does. I understand your points of contention, but I just don’t remember having these same problems back then. Maybe I’ll see it this time thru Also, I never really played many of the original MM games, I started with MMX, then went on to only play MM7, 8 and 11 in the OG series. Like I said, I’m much more of an X fan. Played X1-X4 and Zero. Id say still give it a try if you like the X series more, and go with Bass instead.
Yeah, this video of his was just awful. Then again, the only videos of his that I find moderately tolerable are his Kirby videos. He basically just slams anything that isn't piss easy. I found Mega Man & Bass incredibly well designed, though I can't defend the flying tank boss lol.
I remember having nothing but this and Wario Ware Twisted back in the day. I remember loving this game on the GBA 'cause I didn't know any better. Playing it a few years later on a SNES emulator made me realize the game I've been robbed of.
I loved this game back in the day. I chose to play as Bass from the get go and never even looked at Megaman, I found the level of difficulty rewarding, but I haven't played a lot of Megaman games, so mine is kind of an outsider perspective.
you should play more mega man games they are all great games especially the X series which I personally enjoy more over the classic series. they are separated into 2 timelines people often call the original timeline the classic line and then X takes place like 100 years into the future or something and all the original characters are dead the humans characters it is unknown what happen to the OG robots.
So....am I the only one who agrees with remake or rebrake when they said this game is a bit over exaggerated on the difficulty Edit: side note, when I found out this game existed, Burner man became my favorite, mostly by design
Burnerman looks hot(HA!) to me too but boi fighting him is way different story, also I like Magicman and Groundman better in term of design but Burnerman is still good looking. About difficulty, yeah I feel you. It's not very good by any mean but for me it's still a damn fine game, I'd complain more about X6 or GOD FORBID X7 than this game.
@@YoungAvJoe I can definitely agree with that, it isn't my favorite out of the classic Mega Man games (that would be MM8 for me), but I feel like it has some really fun designs for all of the bosses, although Cold man is slightly too bland for me. Also I don't know why, but for Mega Man and Bass I have always thought that it would have been a cool idea if they made it for GameCube at the time and have it be 3D since there was pretty much no classic Mega Man on the system that I know of
@@FrothyMilkshake19 I want to love this game; SO BADLY! The music is easily one of the best in the series, the graphics are impressive for SNES standards, and the robot master designs are very cool and unique (excluding astro and tengu man). But, I just can't ignore the things this game does wrong.
0:32 Upon my first playthrough, I shared the same opinion, but every time I replay it, it gets better. Now, it's one of my top 5 favorite in the franchise and my all-time favorite Classic series game.
Seeing so many many people speak negatively about this game, but also a few people doing the opposite. Gives me confused feelings and actually makes me want to play the game to cement my opinion.
Although I disagree with a lot of the complaints, I still hate the game. It’s still worth playing though if you love Mega Man to death. Don’t play the GBA port, that’s not a good first impression.
I guess I should provide context for my experience with the series. I've played 2,7,8,9,10,11,X1 and X4 and outside of the series, some other hardcore platformers I've played are: super meat boy, celeste and dead cells. As for games in a similar vein: azure striker gunvolt 1+2 and mighty gunvolt burst. So I guess I'm pretty experienced.
1st, try astroman without his weakness, 2 the yoku blocks... man 3. that section in astromna you complained about, never died to it, 4 YOU DO NOT NEED TO JUMP ON THE BALOON SECTION 5 theres ANOTHER infinite life before king jet
Megaman & Bass must be a damn complicated game... But without a doubt its music is one of the best in the series Dynamo Man, Astro Man, Ground Man, The King Boss Battle, those are masterpieces
I guess my familiarity with this game makes me biased, but damn do I love it. It was my very first Megaman game and I honestly don't think I would have turned into such a fan if this game wasn't brutally punishing. It had an incredible mystique for me precisely because it took me YEARS to beat it despite its short length. Talk about a lasting impression. P.S: the balloon bit in Tengu Man's stage becomes much easier once you realize you can simply walk off one balloon and land on the next.
I seriously liked this game, it's one of my favorites. The difficulty was one of a kind, enemies were infuriating and all of that but, this geniunely hurt my feels... sadface
Megaman V on Gameboy got forgotten by Capcom themselves depsite that game being totally different from all the classic Megaman games. Megaman V is the best underrated Megaman game by far.
I know I'm in the minority here and I'm very much aware of this game's flaws, but I actually like this one, a lot more than most. I also don't think the "screen crunch" on the GBA version is as debilitating as everyone claims. But that's also likely because that is in fact the only version I've ever played.
I think if you only counted the people who have actually played this game, you aren't in the minority. This game is beloved by many. It's just become a punching bag over the years because a few people on the internet with influence said it was bad.
Honestly, I was kind of underwhelmed when I played this game for the first time. The difficulty is high, but it's not like it's one of the hardest games ever made. I'd say the final level is the only one I would truly consider "bullshit", and while really hard, the game does present some pretty fun and dynamic levels and bosses. I mean, I'd say these bosses are more interesting than your standard "jump and shoot a thing" style bosses that the classic series was becoming oversaturated with before 7. I just thought this game was a fun challenge, and though Bass makes it easier, I usually run through it as Megaman now that I know how the game is. Your first 1-3 playthroughs will be nightmarish, yes, but once you get the hang of it and start playing a bit more patiently, I think the game gets a hell of a lot better. You don't see a lot of other games getting shit on for being hard the first time around, so I think this game deserves that same kind of chance.
@@gabegriffin5984 I mean, games taking a few runs to get good at really isn't that uncommon to begin with. Just look at Dark Souls, a game that takes a long ass time just to get decent at. I don't think reducing frustration and getting good at the game means that the game is bad for the time you struggle, because if that was the case, most hard games out these days would all be considered shit.
@@tronmerncutsman thing is most hard games nowadays have reasons to keep coming back, be it ng+ or some other post-game content here its like...alright. I understand how to play as bass now. the only reason I have to come back is to play through as megaman, a fundamentally different character
@@tronmerncutsman the difference here is with a game like Dark Souls, you have a 60 hour rpg that probably takes about 5 hours to really grasp the combat and playstyle, and then you have the entire rest of the game to enjoy, with this game like you said, the first 1-3 play throughs are going to be nightmarish. Why would you want to play a game that you don't enjoy 3 times over? What do you gain from that?

@@bhull242 I played it recently, and it's not as bad as people make it out to be, if I'm being honest. Maybe I'm biased, since when I played the SNES version, I used the player switch patch (mostly to get all the CDs on one save file) and the Equip All Items patch that the Rockman 4 Minus Infinity guy made, but I managed to get through the game okay with enough practice. Although I'm not doing myself many favors since I also thought Mighty No. 9 was okay. I usually just stick to the tried and true method of practicing and recognizing patterns in order get through these kinds of games, and it tends to work out more often than not.
The Mega Man Cave you know the drill, something isn't edgy enough for murican audience, and the rest of the world has to suffer with butchered English versions of games because of this..

6:38 Tengu and Astro joined King's forces. This is because King was recruting Robot Masters from all over the world. Some of them joined because they wanted to, some others were forced to join.
Funny thing that I was just playing Mega Man 8-Bit DeathMatch before watching this video, I gotta say, Mega Man is really kicking in this year, and I love it! :D By the way, speaking of Mega Man & Bass, I was always confused with this game since it had Mega Man 8 graphics but it was a game that came out on the Super FamiCom, now I know what was going on at the time :) But... Was it worth it? I don't know, I thought this game was hard because I thought I was bad at Mega Man games but NO! The game is actually hard!!! I'm glad this video exists, thanks AntDude. 1:56 Mega Man 7, 8 & Bass FamiCom Edition!
Just a tip about the balloon section, it's probably a bad idea to jump from balloon to balloon. You can walk normally without needing to bother with that until the last balloon. Also, I'll stick with the Bass from the M&B series (yes, I'm including Challenger from the Future on the Wonder Swan). That one can double jump, MM10's Bass can't.
Still better than any of the Ghouls 'n Ghosts games. At least, MM&B has controls that age well, doesn't throw cheap enemies at you every five feet, and doesn't force the player to beat the levels twice to watch the ending.
One of the game's biggest flaws (and this becomes more apparent during the multiple boss gauntlets towards the end) is that there are no etanks. There are some upgrades that can help recover health between battles, but when you're deep into the multi-staged final Wily battle, you pretty much have to do that shit on a single life bar and it's frustrating as all hell.
i just love the fact that Arins "oh yeah, LEMONS" has become a meme in the the megaman community, or i could be wrong and it's always been a meme in said circle, at any rate, LEMONS!
Antman didn't mention the lack of Rush for Mega Man...which is weird since Bass can use Treble. And E-tanks. That makes the game unfairly difficult cause they removed options for no reason. Mega Man 8 did remove Rush and E tanks but the game was designed around it.
*_Any of the numbered ones? What 'bout the Megaman Arcade fighting games, their port(s) to the NeoGeo Pocket Color, Rockboard for the Famicom, Megaman: The Wily Wars for the SEGA Genesis, the mobile phone ports of the first 6 Megaman games, and Rockman & Forte: Challengers From The Future for the Bandai Wonderswan?_*
I played this game when I was 12 years old and then again recently, did not have these issues... Feel this was kind of a bad take. For the part with the orange balloons, they give you an extra life when you're dying with the balloons to teach you to small jump or also that you can dash to the next balloon. It isn't that difficult you just press the button for less time (tap it). It's in almost every platform game, but for most it's a gimmick whereas in this game you actually need to learn to vary how high/far you're jumping and short jump at times. For the boss, that's every MegaMan game. And this game is actually more generous than a lot of MegaMan games with extra lives and the continue system not making you restart the entire level.
I think most people are talking about the tank boss on the GBA version. The screen crunch really really makes it a bit of a nightmare.

This is still my favorite classic Megaman game. And I was playing on GBA. Also I'm so happy someone acknowledged that reference to it in Megaman 9.
They have yet to make a Gentle Man robot master.
I mean the pun is right there, and if the design were to turn being a bit silly, he could just be made into an Easter egg joke boss.
If not, maybe an npc - like a shopkeep or upgrade merchant.

"Remember when I said you should start off at Cold Man? Because he's the only one that's actually kind of decent."
I'd disagree.

Cuz Mega Man and Bass is a great game! Though the GBA port is kinda poop because of the screen crunch.
@@agreedboarart3188 eh....is it ok despite that? I don't remember having much issue with it on Wii U.

This is one of my favorite game in the series. MegaMan wasn't known to be an easy game. Would say that MegaMan 1-6, 9-10 is more difficult easily. So I'm not sure how this can be considered bad if those are good.

7:30 STOP JUMPING. Just run atop that series of balloons and you should be low enough to get the next one separate from the group without much risk.
Which sounds like a worse idea because you're landing on the balloons way too soon.
Well, if you're worried, just know they don't pop immediately, so you have a little time to stop and let the others rise.
Damn, these graphics are fantastic.

Yes because there are no new graphics since they are all pretty much borrowed from megaman 8.
@@megaedge2762 still impressive for the snes
A lot of this, yes.
What?
I think a lot of the problem is that people grew up with the older mega man games. They have nostalgia for the games and played them when they were younger and more patient. They no longer notice the cheap traps, strange design flaws, and unfair level design, because they've known the tricks to get around it their whole lives. But they dont think about it that way, so when they see the same problems in a game they're not familiar with they don't compare them.
@@treybug10000 I think you're right. To me, this is just another great entry in the franchise.

Idk man, I played this waaay back when I first found out about emulation and I remember liking it a lot. I just started it again on my Pi, but given, I’m into Bass and that’s how I played it back then and now
I’m more of an X fan, and Bass plays much more like X than MM does. I understand your points of contention, but I just don’t remember having these same problems back then. Maybe I’ll see it this time thru
Also, I never really played many of the original MM games, I started with MMX, then went on to only play MM7, 8 and 11 in the OG series.
I like both versions. I grew up with the GBA port too, and I remember getting pretty far as a kid. At least to King Stage 2 on a car trip.

I don't think it's a bad game, it's just really hard.
Actually Ground Man isn’t too bad once you get his pattern down. You could honestly take him out second if you wanted to.
Yeah, that's what I was thinking. I've definitely done playthroughs where I started with Ground Man.

@@YoungAvJoe I can definitely agree with that, it isn't my favorite out of the classic Mega Man games (that would be MM8 for me), but I feel like it has some really fun designs for all of the bosses, although Cold man is slightly too bland for me.
@@gabegriffin5984 I mean, games taking a few runs to get good at really isn't that uncommon to begin with. Just look at Dark Souls, a game that takes a long ass time just to get decent at.
Congraturations This story is happy end
One of the game's biggest flaws (and this becomes more apparent during the multiple boss gauntlets towards the end) is that there are no etanks. There are some upgrades that can help recover health between battles, but when you're deep into the multi-staged final Wily battle, you pretty much have to do that shit on a single life bar and it's frustrating as all hell.

I never had trouble with this part, I just learned in two tries that you had to jump before time and that’s it (it was with negaman)
You should play Mega Man V, from Game Boy.
Hey, Bass, why must we keep ignoring the game, while you're actually in the title???
