The mental spectrum that Mr Peterson operates at is so well marinated with explorative, dissective ingredients, if you know what I mean. He concluded the lecture by saying something along the lines of- it's been a challenge to understand the correlation of conscienousness with brain structure, after just giving a lecture about it, that's psychoanalytical justification of what you're trying to say in tangible actuality.

This description reminded me of something I thought of years ago that I called "stereo-thinking." If you think about a thing from multiple perspectives, then that thing becomes easier to visualize in detail. I think this is what Peterson is doing when he tries to explain or describe consciousness. This is a good talk.
I’ve never met a psychologist as smart as Jordan Peterson. It’s also made me very skeptical of any student who studies psychology. I don’t think anyone has put in the additional effort that Peterson has put in into his psychological research. He has delved into mythology, biology, political theory, Christianity, theology, Nietzschean philosophy, existentialism, Jungian psychoanalysis. I can’t think of anyone in real life who has been able to combine knowledge from so many fields together and synthesise them in the way he does. And then to deliver them in speech format which is another skill in and of itself. Its pretty dazzling.
I do admit, I have read a bunch of Nietzsche, and Peterson does contradict a lot of what Nietzsche says despite quoting from the philosopher in his book Maps of Meaning. There is a strong appreciation for Christianity from Peterson whereas for Nietzsche, it is utterly rejected.

What is consciousness ? Great question. Personally I like the idea of westworld's take on this [Spoiler alert for 1st season]:

On the other hand I believe that consciousness might be heavily intertwined with the ability to think, e.g. to reach new behavior patterns without previous specific experience. So basically abstraction capabilities, which humans have quite a bit.
Consciousness in this picture then becomes an abstract understanding of ones own self. Since the brain seems to be somewhat adapted for predictions, a high enough level of abstraction might lead the brain to try and predict itself. Consciousness then becomes a feeling of this self prediction, like everything we feel from all of our other senses. Maybe this interplay of self prediction is even at the heart of our thinking and abstraction process.
Maybe we will find out someday !
Consciousness is more simple than what psychology and neuroscience can explain, yet is still incomprehensibly complex.
At the most fundamental level, you could say that it means with(con) "is-ness".
Consciousness itself is the expression of "I AM".
The human body is a container for consciousness, just like a cup is a container for water. It doesn't have to be anymore complicated than: there is water, and it is or isn't in the cup. BUT, if you wanted to, you could hyper analyze and scientifically deconstruct the scientific specific details behind it.
God is the I AM. He is the very essence of being and consciousness itself.
The containers of creation are like filters of the "is-ness", having variations of I am expression, but ultimately that aspect of simply being is unquantifiable.
You may be able to quantify variables within a system where consciousness has moved through, but you can't measure "being" anymore than you can measure values.
They're invisible.
You can see people exercising their values, but the values are beyond measure.

It's very interesting, especially when you think about it from a quantum physics perspective and the effect of the observer on the results. How we affect the reality by observation (measuring) and the role of consciousness in this and the fact that we are part of the environment and effecting it by our observation. It always fascinates me.

I have been studying this almost all my life. "It is my opinion" will preface everything from this point. So you have been created in "Gods image and like". You are Godly. You are part of the creation process, in fact within your surroundings you are likely the main creator. But every person that measures or observes the situation also adds to the total of the creation and the outcome of the measurement or observation (manifestations). Wave contains all potential outcomes. Our measurements decide where Wave becomes particle in regards to our experience of the outcome. But there is also load balancing between when multiple people are involved in measuring the same moment. So easiest way I can describe it. This is a program on a computer. Every single thought and emotion you have on a topic writes the code for how the experience of that topic should manifest for you. Everyone that measures that topic will also get their experience and the program is incredibly intelligent, it will combine the manifestations in such a way that everyone gets the experience they are focused on. This also scales up to communities, citys, countries etc. Ever wonder why the Simpsons "predicted" so many things? You had billions of people watching those episodes while laughing, being excited and generally positive focused on the same thing. We all wrote the code for those experiences by being focused on the same things. But then again, it's just my opinion.
This is why prayer is important, even when you know something has happened, but you don't know the outcome. You may still influence it.
I think Dr. Peterson was referring to Campbell and fiske’s 1959 article on MTMM matrix, rather than Cronbach and Meehl.

We see this truism manifest all the way down at the quantum level of physics, such is the degree to which it is fundamental to reality, and we're all aware of the thought-experiment that made the phenomena in question famous; Schrödinger's cat and the whole quantum superposition revelation. But I find this example to be the easiest to comprehend: light must first bounce off of an object before it can then be picked up by the receptor cells in your eyes in order to become visual data, and light (despite having zero mass) will impart some energy to whatever it hits, this is why solar sails work.
Engineers working on some project related to quantum entanglement, can't remember and it's besides the point, they were running into this very issue when they were measuring the spin of an electron (or some aspect of it) because in order to take a measurement, i.e. in order to observe the electron, they first had to affect it by smashing another subatomic particle into it.
6-06-2023 - - - - I'm disappointed that Video Download Helper (A Firefox browser extension for downloading UA-cam videos) will not correctly download this lecture. I prefer to watch videos on the VLC player rather than watching them on UA-cam. Also, if you download the video, you'll have it because sometimes UA-cam removes videos for various reasons and after that, the videos are gone. Isn’t consciousness merely awareness of awareness itself?
Of course awareness isn’t merely perception- a camera isn’t “aware” of light, yet is a transducer of light.
Peterson is just focusing on a biological explanation of consciousness but there is a lot more to the question.
For instance, at a quantum level physicists believe observers affect the results of how fundamental particles behave. The implications to this are huge, because why would self awareness in an species that hasn't even been around for 99,99999...% of the existence of the universe be able to alter how physics work at the most fundamental level we know?

No. It means advertisements only affect those that can perceive *and* understand them.
Sri Aurobindo said that Consciousness is fundamental. It is not mind but that which mind arises from. The whole universe is thus Consciousness taking many forms and variations and degrees of capacity. Think of the universe being a dream. All the characters, objects, and happenings all are products of one Consciousness even though things apparently operate independently. Even a camera sampling randomly happens within Consciousness because the observation of the camera the thought to leave the camera etc. There is always an element of Consciousness even in the unconscious

Concerning that word consciousness, it's the god theory of creation that messes with human thought processes.
If we all believed as did Stephen Hawking before he died, that in one form or another the universe always existed, then we would also believe that consciousness in all forms of life always existed ... no creator involved.

Well, Peterson could have saved himself, and his students, a lot of time by just answering the question "What is consciousness?" by saying "I don't know."
