2016/11/08: My Message to Millennials: How to Change the World -- Properly

  • Young people want, rightly, to change the world. But how might this be properly done? Dr Jonathan Haidt recently contrasted Truth University with Social Justice University. Social Justice U has as its advantage the call to social transformation. In this video, I outline why Truth is the proper route to societal improvement -- and why that starts with the individual.

    I read Archipelago Gulag in the middle of a 10-year prison sentence in America. It absolutely changed my perception of both myself and the world around me. I went into prison 28 years old, addicted to heroin, filled with rage and resentment, reveling in victim thinking, and blaming everyone for the failings of my life but me. After reading this book it started me on a path of self discovery. At 36 I walked out of prison and changed everything. I learned personal responsibility, honesty, and integrity and applied it to my new life. Now 6 years later my life is filled with peace and love. I have an extremely well paying job that I look forward to going to every day. Im in an amazing relationship and I appreciate freedom in a new and profound way. Essentially I changed my life from Hell To Heaven and it all started with reading that book.

      There's a patina of ethnocentrism to him that makes him suspect for me. At 4:03, he brings up a 100-word New Testament story instead of succinctly putting it as Gandhi popularly did to "Be the change you want to see in the world." He does things like this constantly. He's slippery, but there's a constant chip on his shoulder and under the surface anger that for me suggests he doesn't have it as figured out as he presents. It's like he's a geologist but his specialty is planetary crusts. Fantastic, we need that. But there's more to the field than crusts, so don't tell me you know everything, and have some humility while you're communicating what you do. Your sins may catch up with you. Or those who trusted you.

Prof. Peterson is such a huge help, I feel like he's one of the only profs that actually cares about the students and student life. He's spending his personal time fighting for a better and more healthy school atmosphere and he's educating us. Thank you Prof. Peterson for all your hard work and guidance.

      "Why would they be for using the wrong pronoun"
      Because that is exactly what the law states, regardless of intent.

    • @oneki
      @oneki 7 років тому +4

      I think the point still is that a law must not decide the words one "MUST USE", it is difficult enough already for the law to define words one " MUSN'T USE". Adding another crazy threshold now creates a precedent in law that could end up being bad for the future. The law might be good now, but think of when a malevolent person becomes in charge and uses the precedent to write in additional words that one must then use.

      In my opinion, it is absurd to insist that failure to use a made-up pronoun would qualify as hate speech. Adhering to such demands, which are indeed based on a social construct, is not about showing respect.
      We can't have a society where these sensitive mental cases warp the definitions of "hate" and "disrespect", while there are real problems to worry about.

      Tom Woodthorpe The reason you and many people including my self feel those feelings is because he speaks of the most fundamental aspects of the human mind. We connect to it because we all have the same rock in the depths of our mind, and we only need to find it and begin to unearth it witch is what he does when he speaks.

    Dear Mr. Peterson,
    I have followed the situation which the media has centered on you from the very beginning. I come from Romania, a country which, I'm sure you know, has suffered under communism. I was born merely 2 years after the Revolution of 1989. Even today, more than 20 years later, the ripples are there. My generation grew up in the centre of those ripples. As far as I can remember, even as a toddler, I had made up my mind to leave my country in search of something better. I grew up in a family of intellectuals too. My parents always put great stock in academic achievement. My father bought me books. I read Piaget, Sartre, Dostoevsky in middle-school. I've always been inquisitive and deeply passionate. I started questioning things. That didn't go well. By the time I was in high-school, years of emotional abuse at the hands of bitter teachers of the old guard threatened to make me finally kneel. I would come home day after day, and tell my parents about this or that teacher shaming me in front of the whole classroom, talking me down, reducing me to tears. They kept telling me to bow my head. As a famous Romanian saying goes "The sword does not strike the heads that bow." The reason I would not, could not bow my head was because that meant going against my principles. Corruption was everywhere. Teachers got away with everything from openly asking for bribes in different forms to physically and emotionally abusing students. I barely graduated because of this. Everyone always told me I could have done much better for myself had I not been so hot-headed. Everyone knew I was right, especially the few teachers who were different. Everyone told me that I, one person, could never change anything.
    Almost immediately after high-school, I moved to Sweden. I immediately found myself to be the odd one out, once again, but not in a bad way. At the time, I thought it was amazing that I could voice my opinions and not be berated and shamed. I was embraced in almost every group at first, but treated warily. The more politically aware I became and the more I started speaking about issues no one would touch, such as mental healthcare and extreme political correctness, the more people walked away from me. Seven years later, I am weary. I live with my husband in one of Stockholm's ghettos. I stopped being a feminist because I simply couldn't be that idealist anymore who "wouldn't let the bad apples poison the batch." There were just too many bad apples. But I can't talk about any of this.
    Like you, to stand idly and NOT speak against societal problems is the worse alternative for me. Often, I am forced to stay silent. I have lost friends, and I am weary and tired. Stockholm University, the place I go to for my education, is an echo chamber. It's not the worst of the lot, but I most definitely cannot express my opinions out loud. I am considering starting a men's rights group, or a classical liberals' group and challenge others to discussions. My fear is that no one will join, and that the university's policies would serve as an argument against me and others like me.
    I suffer from chronic depression and a slew of other mental diagnoses. Three days ago I came home crying from a family reunion. My in-laws are very politically correct, but allow discourse. My sister-in-law, however, is a close minded social justice warrior type, and when she's in the room, I'm usually silent for fear of causing scenes. I have adopted this manner after an incident in which I jokingly said "that's so gay" in response to two of our male friends jokingly acting like they were a couple. My sister-in-law immediately shut me down, and an awkward silence ensued. That put a rift between us. I should mention that I am bisexual, and three of the people present, including one involved in the joke, were bisexual people, and just laughed it off. Since then, out of respect for the rest of the family, I do not challenge her.
    But I am weary. Very weary. My husband and I live in a shithole, in a neighbourhood where they stab the pizza guy. It's cold and we have bed-bugs. Most of our neighbours have cockroaches, too. All I have of value in this life is my husband, whom I love deeply and who shares my views, and my dream of one day teaching others at university level, as well as continuing to learn and better myself. The latter has always been my dream, and the thought that I would have to give up my values to achieve it makes me contemplate suicide.
    I'm sorry for the long-winded letter, but I wanted you to know that your actions have given me hope like never before. I have had few teachers who have truly made me grow as an academic and a person, and I just want to thank you for being one of them.
    There are many like me, and you give us courage. Thank you.
    With respect,
    ~ Kitty

    Hi Mr. Peterson
    Discovered you through your recent appearance on the Joe Rogan Experience. On that podcast - where you performance was brilliant, by the way - you mentioned that you are still very much learning to edit videos.
    I admire that you are taking the time to work on this craft, and as a UA-camr myself (who started with no editing experience) I can relate to the journey you are on. So as a small way to express my gratitude for the work you are doing, here are a few techniques you can may consider for future videos. Hopefully at least one tip can prove useful for you:
    1. Ken Burns Technique - subtlety adds a zoom in or zoom out to pictures, to make them slightly more engaging in a video form
    2. End Cards - Leave 10 - 15 seconds as an outro at the end of your video. It can even be black screen if you like. This will allow you to add "End Cards". You can youtube search End Cards if you'd like to learn more, but the quick and dirty of it is this is youtube's built in way to provide a call to action for people who have watched a video to the end to either subscribe or watch another one of your videos.
    3. Create sharable content. Consider taking 2 or 3 minute clips from your longer videos and post them independently, with the aim of creating short, powerful "highlights" that could share well across social media platforms. It's very rare for someone to share a 30 minute lecture with their friends, even if it moved them deeply. But a 2 minute video with a powerful message can spread like wildfire.
    As I said, I hope this response has some use for you Mr. Peterson. All the best.
    -Dan

    I was reading Dostoevsky's "The Brothers Karamazov" (thanks to Mr. Peterson) and ran across this statement, "The man who lies to himself can be more easily offended than any one. You know it is sometimes very pleasant to take offense, isn't it? A man may know that nobody has insulted him, but that he has invented the insult for himself, has lied and exaggerated to make it picturesque, has caught at a word and made a mountain out of a molehill -- he knows that himself, yet he will be the first to take offence, and will revel in his resentment till he feels great pleasure in it, and so pass to genuine vindictiveness." I find it fascinating that Dostoevsky more than 100 years ago had insight into the problems that would ail today's society.

    Hi Professor, I'm a mid 20s millennial, a former UofT student. I've watched a few of your videos, and have been following you for a couple months. I can't begin to tell you how invaluable I find this program to be.
    I've always wanted to change the world, to make it a better place, but I didn't want to get involved in politics while doing so. I'm currently trying to achieve that impact from a capitalistic standpoint.
    I used to write (fiction but I enjoyed writing) as a kid, and had won competitions. However, somewhere in my life I lost that passion, and I want to get it back. I don't consider myself a left or right wing, I hate identity politics and political correctness.
    (For SJWs: I'm a POC, first generation immigrant, cis-gender, straight, male)
    For everyone else: I'm a human being willing to die for free speech, truth, and freedom. I want to be the best version of myself possible, in every sense. What you're doing and this video, is making a positive impact in my life. I'm not sure if you read these comments, but I just wanted to say thank you and keep up what you're doing.

      @@nathanielgirma8265 I didn't really "snap" out of it ... it was more of a crawl ! LOL
      I was 34 when I woke up one morning, in 1986, in a hostel for homeless alcoholics, my few possessions in a black plastic bag beside the bed, and with no idea how I'd got there. My wife had recently divorced me, I'd lost my job, my home, friends, family, everything. It was then that I began to realize that I was not as OK as I kept saying I was ... and that I needed to make some serious changes, not just to my way of life, but to my whole way of thinking and to my whole way of Being.
      It then took me ten long, agonizing, years to get free of the grip of alcohol ... I haven't touched a drop of the stuff since 1996 (at the age of 44) And now, at last, at the age of 68, I feel like the proper grown-up man I should have become 50 years ago. It took a long time to learn, but it was worth it, and I am thankful I was given the time to do it.

      @MrFreeGman Common sense has been slowly eroding away starting back as far as the 1960's. The assault on common sense and common morals has basically gone unchecked for decades due to the unending Leftist rhetoric being forced at the US population via K1-12 Public Schooling, Universities, News Media, Hollywood and Politicians. Unfiltered outlets for an conservative view have only recently become available. Fox News itself has only been around since 1996, and Online resources, like that of Blogging, Streaming etc. are newer phenomenon that have just recently taken off within the last 8-10 years and even then are facing HEAVY opposition by Online content managers like Google, UA-cam and Twitter with their over-zealous banning and/or demonetization practices! If left unchecked/unfettered, common sense will dominate within 2 generations, but will take a strong effort by that 1st generation to maintain Free Speech and Freedom of discussion in ALL areas of Education, Media and Online content.

    Thank you Dr. Jordan B Peterson. I'm in in my third year of college as a humanities student. The public university I have has great history professors who are incredibly knowledgable in religious history and attempt to challenge all scopes of ideologies in a fair way. They remind me a lot of you and that is why i think I am learning so much from my college. I wish all professors were like you and them, and i feel like a whole new perspective has opened inside me and I'm only beginning to scratch the surface. Keep fighting the good fight--there are plenty of millennials who still want to be taught to think--not taught to listen, and you encourage the former.

    The state of being that you have described here was called "amusement" by the Greeks, interesting that you noted the role of "music" in attaining it, as they both come from the same root. This is the state where conscious thinking turns off, and the individual begins to act automatically, and the products of this state of mind manifest themselves perfectly.
    Amusement is the state that great artists operate in, and what makes their works to transcendent and moving.

    What I find continually amazing, is how much Peterson makes available all of the information that his conclusions are premised on for the sake of this lecture. Not only does he present us a free lecture, he makes available his own works in the form of his book, in free format, in the hopes that you might investigate of your own volition. This man really is a hero. He speaks to the idea that even if you don't agree with him, you ought to be best equipped to make your own case regardless. He seeks to strengthen the quality of his opposition, so that he himself can improve as well. There is an intellectual and benevolent strain to his thinking, and in the coming days and weeks I will be sharing this video with as many people as I can.

    As a follow-up. People want there to be monsters in the world. They want to be the good and to slay evil. However, when reality shows us that monsters don't exist we make them up. They define some group as the "other" and attack it. They don't realize they're attacking their own brothers and sisters. Ironically they become the evil they seek to rid the world of.

      Unlucky Fat Guy There is no shortage of monsters in the world.
      The problem is that they're never obvious about it, not until they are dragged out of the shadows and into the light. Or, if they hide in plain sight, have their masks ripped off so their true face is exposed.

    • @PlokJeDS
      @PlokJeDS 7 років тому +8

      I think what the video is saying is that there is a budding monster inside each of us. To truly change the world for the better, we have to face the monster inside and orient it to the service of good.

    • @UnluckyFatGuy
      @UnluckyFatGuy 7 років тому +7

      PlokJeDS: 100% agree. However, you first have to define what "better" is. All events just "are". They are not inherently "good" or "bad". You give them that meaning.
      If you look deep inside yourself you'll probably find that all your anger, all your fear is based on old hurts or old ideas you may not even be consciously aware of. Most likely you'll discover that they are just a mask that tries to protect the real you; the part of you that wants to just love and be loved. It takes work but it is possible to transcend fear, anger and frustration and just become a manifestation of that love.
      For me meditation has helped tremendously. I wouldn't say I am a master of my emotions, but I have grown and am growing.
      I wish the same for everyone. including you my friend. 😊

    I think this guy is brilliant, and accurate, when he talks about the need for personal development and having a real, solid basis for what you do/say/believe in life. His talks about Dostoevsky, Nietzsche and Jung are some of the best lectures I've ever see on any topic on UA-cam. I like the way he makes the "academic" philosophies of these writers relevant to daily life.

      Indeed, why should anyone be concerned about legislation that makes things illegal being implemented, if people aren't being thrown in jail for this now!
      It's not like once legislation passes, THEN they would start throwing people in jail for breaking that legislation.
      It's a good thing we have people like you here, John G., if that is your real name, to straighten everyone out on who is an idiot, and who is a chicken little.
      Getting all upset about people making things illegal! The nerve of this guy! Does he think they will ever enforce the law? Obviously, they won't, it is just to not hurt people's feelings.
      What? Do you want to hurt peoples feelings? Because not having laws that put people in jail for hurting people's feelings is how you hurt people's feelings...

    • @buckfiden607
      @buckfiden607 7 років тому +3

      When a law exists, it can be enforced anytime. Creating laws that tell people what they must say is totalitarian. Also, facts do no care about people's feelings. People are better off by taking responsibility over their own lives and to what happens to them. The mindset of a victim is the most disempowering factor for any human being.

    • @buckfiden607
      @buckfiden607 7 років тому

      You don't seem to know what you're talking about. You argument is foolish when it comes to exemplifying hypothetical situations of discrimination. There are hundreds if not thousands of ways to offend somebody; it all depends on what, where, when, how, and to whom you say it. People with symptoms of gender dysphoria (which represent around 1% of the population) should not be given special pronouns.

    • @ge01f

    Why am I learning tools to build myself from a random psychologist online? When you go to see a counselor or therapist in real life, all you get is "go out more" and "make friends". Also they like to talk endlessly about your problems in an attempt to make you contemplate about your situation in order for you to take steps to better yourself, all without offering beneficial information like Jordan gives here.

      are you sure your psychologist was a psychologist?
      what I'm going to say is only applicable in the netherlands but it might be related to your situation.
      Mental health is often aimed at making sure people function in society. Because actual (university-level) psychologists with a real education and the required amount of life experience to help people are quite rare and expensive care providers use them as a last-resort. Often you start with someone who has a lesser degree. In the netherlands that would be a social-psychologic care provider* (spv'er) which required a lower level degree**. While university-educated psychologists dive into theory these educations focus on to how to apply techniques to help people. This does however mean that most of the things you learn are tricks. After all, as long as you don't cause to much trouble society doesn't have to care about you.
      *sociaal psychologisch hulpverlener. I can't guarantee my translation is accurate.
      **a degree from a "hogeschool" which is literally translated to highschool but in fact is the second highest level of tertiary education. It could be probably be compared to community college or a mediocre university being easier than a high-level university but more advanced than vocational schooling.

    An Ode to Dr. Peterson - I've listened to hundreds of hours of your lectures and interviews, I've started reading the Bible and other great works of literature, have quit drinking and finally mustered up the courage to clean my freaking room. I started cutting back on junk food and restarted my membership to the YMCA. I even clipped my fingernails and watered my house plants. Now I will dare put a finger out into the world without trying to screw things up too badly, like a chimpanzee with a wrench on a military helicopter. I will take my dominance cues from the lobster and stand erect. I will no longer be a pathetic, frightened rabbit, but shall embody the heroic archetype and rise like a phoenix while rescuing my father from the depths of the ocean and slaying the dragon of chaos. I shall see the horrors and beauties of existence and speak truth into being like Mardok and bear my crucifix of responsibility like Christ. First, I'm going to take a little nap.
    Godspeed, Good Doctor!

    Just watched the podcast with you and Joe Rogan, loved it. You opened my eyes up to a whole different way of thinking and made me very interested in trying out the future authoring. I've used the code and I will be starting it on my next day off when I have the time to do it. I've dealt with horrible anxiety and depression over the last 5 years and I'm just now changing that by changing the way I view things and I think this could not just help me with those issues but in bettering myself in general and pointing me in the direction I'd like to be. Great stuff your doing and I've definitely subscribed for more. Will also be looking into purchasing the books you have recommended. Hopefully we will be seeing you on the Joe Rogan Experience again. I've been saying for years for that I suspect it's the most ignorant among us that think themselves wise, while the wisest among us think themselves ignorant, which really confuses you when you start to ponder where you are on that scale compared to others.
      Turns out it's been said before a few times.
      "The problem with the world is that fools and fanatics are always so certain of themselves, and wiser people so full of doubts."
      - Bertrand Russell
      It was even alluded to Abrahamic scripture.
      "Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools."
      - Romans 1:22
      There's also some scientific research on the subject that explains it nicely, called the Dunning Kruger experiment.
