How to use a flower frog! | Episode 28 of Blossoms and Bourbon

- Pin frogs have been used as a floral mechanic for years and date back to 14th century Japan (called a Kenzan in that culture)! They were popularized in the US during the 40’s and 50’s. The “frog” is a device used to help hold flowers in place. They are made of different materials and are typically very eco-friendly because they can be cleaned and re-used! See how easy they are to use in creating striking floral arrangements! Then, the pour for this episode was gifted to me by a great friend! It’s called New Southern Revival Sorghum Whiskey from the High Wire Distilling Company in Charleston, SC. The spirit is completely made from 100% sorghum syrup and while you would expect it to be quite sweet, it’s not overly so! The husband and wife owners have a background in backing so their approach is very much culinary-focused! I hope you’ll enjoy this episode!

Wow, these arrangements are really lovely, Mark. Being a "more is always better" kind of person, frogs can be frustrating -- they (gasp!) limit the number of blooms and greenery you can use. But, after watching your video and learning the tips (OMG wedging that sucker to make it fit in the hole is genius!), I think I'll hunt down my mother's frogs and use them to create a simple arrangement. Mark you can have the Rum straight up or with coke. They is also a white one called Mount Gay Silver which I used in the height of Covid which was my medicine. Have not caught it yet.
I used to drink a bit of rum and Coke back in my younger days, and also have enjoyed it with various combinations of fresh fruit juices. But I applaud your medicinal use of it! We should probably let the world know about that! 😂. Thanks again for watching! ❤️

how do you keep a frog from falling over?
Hi @lucynesse8734 and thanks for watching! In one example in the video, I use one pin frog turned upside down and slightly on top of the other to counterbalance it and give it stability. There is also a product called floral clay that can also be used. The clay (which really looks like green clay!) comes in a roll. You would unroll a bit of it, and use it to adhere the frog to the bottom of your container. The clay is SUPER sticky and will often leave a residue on your container and frog (which is why lots of folks stopped using it!). And, ultimately, it's about making sure that the flower placement in the design is balanced and that the stems are placed to ensure both visual and physical balance!! Great question!
