This story reminds me of what I would tell my clients. Once, you have obtained internal peace. You will do one of two things. Leave and go into search of a great life. Or you will see that everything is perfectly fine. You crawl up out of the life you are living or you stay and make the best of it. When, we are at peace with ourselves, the world and those we see everyday. There will not be anything that you can't do. "No, I will not do that" After six months of therapy. They come back in and share with me what they have done, as though they never said anything about why and the reasons they will not do that it. They finally learned to let go. Something happens, as soon as it's over, let it go as though it never happened. Give this practice a couple months and see if you don't began to feel better, energy goes up and you will find yourself doing things that you never would around or in front of people. One will never become successful, unless, they can enjoy being around people. Giving them what they want. Go beyond anyone's expectations and they will always be a repeat customer or an employee who stays with you. What ever business I managed. The first thing I did was get lost in my work. I had no clue as to what I was doing. The magic happened, the employees soon trusted me. Together we built a business. A business doesn't depend on who is President. A business can be successful regardless of what the economy is doing. I asked this question. Where did the money go? No where. So, you have to know and be able to get creative to find ways to get people to shop at your business. Great service, great product, great price, super nice people tending to the customer. The vast majority of people consider leaving their jobs every day. It's nearly universal. If you spend most of your day at work thinking "what am I doing here?"... then you need to leave. Life is too short to do what you hate, and too long to do what you hate.
I appreciate this. I needed to be reminded of this. Work is just a means of buying food and paying for expenses. There's no need for personal, emotional investment.
Isn't it strange how different things said or done, can affect each of us differently? Both beings near the same, can react quite differently. Some need to be told nice things. Accepting personal praise of some sort. Others crave for wise improvement, which mainly comes from criticism. Praise can often become a delaying of advancement. Creating thoughts full of self glorification distractions. While criticism can create a dislike of the messenger. Rather than the seeing of a possible imperfection. Which was highlighted for removal by the critic. Look at criticism as a duster trying to remove a stain. That's all it usually is. So sez me.
It‘s not true that only the person listening to criticism is looking for wise improvement. Praise and criticism can both be used for wise improvement it depends on what kind of person you are dealing with. A person who has low faith in his own abilities will require praise for wise improvement and criticism will only worsen his situation. Whereas a person with belief in his own abilities would require criticism as praise would not add much value to him.

Whereas, the critic usually has seen a fault in the original one's statement. If the original one meditated upon the criticism, he may find justification IN said criticism. And then see that criticism as the duster polishing his bowl. His statement. Making the original statement MORE correct. Of course, there are nasty people who say things just to be hurtful. But the meditation ON the original statement AND its critic will usually clarify. Then the criticised can thank or ignore his critic. If both were honest, a thanking would be precious.

I really enjoy Zen stories and I've read them on and off for years. But of all of them this one, which I'd never heard before this video, is my favorite.
Lately, I've been reflecting on whether I like the carreer I'm currently on or not, or if I should be looking for a job that lets me focus on some other activities that I am interested in and maybe finally find out what do I really want to do with my life (21yo right now). And after a year listening to advice from people like Alan Watts, I started wondering if I was taking myself and my "purpouse" just too seriously to begin with... There's a thing I really loved in this story... "There's no exact answer in action, and so does the single understands of one's goal." Literally had tears when understood this important wisdom of this story.
I really have a hard time with this one as corporate sees people less and less like human beings, when it doesn’t matter how well you do or how hard you work because they don’t value you at all. And not just jobs, but the ones that control whether or not you get shelter. It’s hard to see wisdom these days in one of those answers as it leads to just accepting the abuse.

Ohh definitely. Your thoughts and your personality matters so much. I would have chosen the route the first man took and become a farmer. But there may be many people who would think similar to the second man.
A bowl of rice is also perhaps the only one meal the body needs to be nurtured on a daily basis, to live, to breathe, and experience life. Thinking of minimalism, doing the most with the least, worrying less as all we need is a simple proportion of nutrients to go about our day. That, a laugh, a hug, and maybe a smile from someone make a complete package.
The sage told them their problems stem from stressing over a bowl of rice, one man decided it wasn’t worth it and quit his job the other decided it was not a big deal and continued both of the men no longer was stressed over the issue and became successful. I think the moral of the story is when faced with a problem make a choice either to make a change or accept it, the right answer is the one you choose.

Isn't it strange how different things said or done, can affect each of us differently?
Both beings near the same, can react quite differently.
Some need to be told nice things. Accepting personal praise of some sort.
Others crave for wise improvement, which mainly comes from criticism.
Praise can often become a delaying of advancement.
Creating thoughts full of self glorification distractions.
While criticism can create a dislike of the messenger.
Rather than the seeing of a possible imperfection.
Which was highlighted for removal by the critic.
Look at criticism as a duster trying to remove a stain.
That's all it usually is.
So sez me.
It‘s not true that only the person listening to criticism is looking for wise improvement. Praise and criticism can both be used for wise improvement it depends on what kind of person you are dealing with. A person who has low faith in his own abilities will require praise for wise improvement and criticism will only worsen his situation. Whereas a person with belief in his own abilities would require criticism as praise would not add much value to him.

More often than not, a person receiving criticism does not want it.
And gets angry receiving it. And takes a dislike to the critic.
Whereas, the critic usually has seen a fault in the original one's statement.
If the original one meditated upon the criticism, he may find justification IN said criticism.
And then see that criticism as the duster polishing his bowl. His statement.
Making the original statement MORE correct.
Of course, there are nasty people who say things just to be hurtful.
But the meditation ON the original statement AND its critic will usually clarify.
Then the criticised can thank or ignore his critic.
If both were honest, a thanking would be precious.

It is so amazing, and so humbling to one how our Infinite and Divine Source work. When you get into situations and ask for guides or sign or answers, and you wait all day but nothing happens. Then at the end of the day, your fingers randomly and unintentionally pick things on your tablet and the loo, you are watching the almost exact circumstance you are in and exact question you have, and the message, the divine's exact answer to you is in front of you.

Lately, I've been reflecting on whether I like the carreer I'm currently on or not, or if I should be looking for a job that lets me focus on some other activities that I am interested in and maybe finally find out what do I really want to do with my life (21yo right now). And after a year listening to advice from people like Alan Watts, I started wondering if I was taking myself and my "purpouse" just too seriously to begin with... At the end, whatever I end up doing, its just for a bowl of rice. Thank you.

I really have a hard time with this one as corporate sees people less and less like human beings, when it doesn’t matter how well you do or how hard you work because they don’t value you at all. And not just jobs, but the ones that control whether or not you get shelter. It’s hard to see wisdom these days in one of those answers as it leads to just accepting the abuse.

I wish I had seen this video back 40 years ago. I would not have wasted decades of my life teaching public school. It was a waste of time and life and all for "a bowl of rice ".

The sage told them their problems stem from stressing over a bowl of rice, one man decided it wasn’t worth it and quit his job the other decided it was not a big deal and continued both of the men no longer was stressed over the issue and became successful. I think the moral of the story is when faced with a problem make a choice either to make a change or accept it, the right answer is the one you choose.
