You've checked every thing...but yet your toilet still keeps running....check this video out and let me show you what it might be. - www.robertsessa...
Such a helpful video! I had replaced a flapper for a customer thinking that was causing the water level going down in the tank. I was prepared to change the flush valve when I stumbled on your video. As soon as I shortened the overflow tube the problem disappeared. Thank you for saving time and expense!
I've been dealing with a running toilet for a few days. I changed the flapper and it still ran! Aggravated the fool out of me. So I looked around some more and seen that a constant but slow supply of water was still being delivered via this tube. So I took the google and came across this video. I did what you said to do and BAM. GLORIOUS SILENCE!!! Thank you sir for sharing your knowledge! You have really helped out this first time home owner!!
brilliant. none of the other videos i've watched explained the length of the refill tube. the maintenance people in my complex replaced all the toilet parts and my toilet still kept running. i just tried shortening the tube and it works!! the toilet is no longer running. i rarely leave comments but wanted to thank you!
Thank you so much for explaining in simple detail how to correct what I call "Ghost Flushing". I've replaced flappers, flappers with new drain gaskets, made putty dams around everything and all I needed to do was shorten the hose going into the overflow tube. You have saved my sanity.
You might have just solved my problem!!! Single woman here and trying to fix this myself (no experience) I replaced the flapper and that didn't change anything. But I can see that the hose is quite long (replaced 4 yrs ago by a plumber!!) I am heading out to Home Depot to see if I can buy a clip and hopefully that fixes my problem of running water!! Thank you!
Brother my understanding was that having that tube to far down would stiffen the commode trap so your commode would run off and on . I been to a few repairs in my long retired plumbing life to where I would just pull the hose out and hear a stiffen the the commode would stop running problem fixed with just the proper clip . I guess different fill valves work differently. What do you think ? Good content thanks for sharing 👍
I have been wrestling with this for days. Replaced the flapper, the stand pipe & seals, the tank bolt washers, the tanks to bowl seal, nada. Found this video and voila, finally. I then checked instructions for a fill valve installation, and the directions are vague as far as the fill tube installation goes and nota a word about the effects of leaving the tube too long. Thx, much!!
Fluidmaster needs to highlight this in their instructions! I probably started with a flapper problem, so I replaced that. My fill valve was spraying all over the place so I replaced that and shoved the tube down, so probably swapped out one problem for another that looked the same. Finally pulled the tank off and replaced the flush valve and the gasket to the tank. Shoved that tube back in and still the problem. I was thinking I needed a new toilet or something bc it *just didn’t make any sense*
Everybody I asked automatically goes straight to "replace the flapper"..which I've DONE & hasn't fixed the issue...first time I see this suggestion, just adjusted my tube and hoping it works! Thank you sir! *fingers crossed*
Damn fill tube. The bane of my existence for so many years as a handy man. As you were explaining it I was like....light bulb.... Is siphoning. I said it before you. But man I appreciate you for breaking it down. Thank you Bob!
Amazing tip! 2 of my toilets in my home were suffering from this issue. I’ve done this fix to both - crossing my fingers that this fix is permanent! Thank you!
Thanks, Robert. This is a clear explanation of this problem, which was exactly mine. I actually did it before replacing any other parts and it still worked. Does it make sense to do this as a first, minimally invasive, step?
Thanks Robert! I had replaced the flapper but was still getting a leak into the tank. Turns out my refill tube was down too far, just like in your video. You saved me an expensive repair call.
I have this happening on two of the toilets in my house, oddly enough after replacing the entire assembly in the tank of each one. As I'm hearing the noise and watching your video, I pull up the hose and it stops. Thank you so much, yours is the only video that talks about this.
Thank you very much! After replacing the fill valve and the flapper, this isn’t such an obvious fix but oh so simple. Many other videos don’t mention this. Thank you thank you!
My friend, thank you so much. I live in California and am terribly worried about wasting water. Every time I took a bath, I noticed that the toilet was running after I turned of the bath faucet. I knew that I was wasting gallons of water!. I had replaced the flapper 3 times. I had tucked the refill tube down into the pipe. After watching your video, I have realized my mistake.
Wow,after watching a bunch of videos I finally found the one that deal with the problem I have with my toilet. I tried it and now my toilet is perfect. Thank you so much,I wish I can give you a double "like"!
Thank you!!! Thank you!!! Thank you!!! I just cancelled my plumbing appointment because this did the trick. This video likely saved me $100. Thanks for sharing.
Glad I could help Jesse, for some more free plumbing tips I encourage you to subscribe to my newsletter:www.bobsplumbingvideos.com/newsletter. HAPPY PLUMBING!
Thanks so much Robert. I just shortened the tube on my toilet that has been dripping forever since I last changed out the rest of the internals. NO MORE DRIPPING!! How simple. Thank you and my wife thanks you.
Checking in to say this video is still helping people! Took off the tank and replaced the entire flush valve/gasket after replacing the flapper didn’t work. But did I trim that tube when I replaced the fill valve - nope. Thank you!
BINGO!! That did the trick! My toilet has been running intermittently forever. Changed the fill valve and flapper no change. Finally fixed. Thanks a million!
Thanks for this video. I installed a new fill valve and flapper and was wondering why the water was leaking. I suspected siphoning and your video confirmed it.
I was proud of myself for replacing the fill valve and flapper (which legitimately needed to be replaced) on my own but so frustrated that the water was still running. Approx every minute or so it would run for maybe 5 seconds and then stop. And then start up again. Thank you so much for the tip!!!
having the same prob, i changed the flapper and still the toilet drips a bit from time to time in the bowl and i couldn't figure out why, thought maybe the chain from the flapper was too long and getting sucked down when the flapper was open but no, well yeah, i shortened the chain link anyways but still, some water was kinda running, turns out the that tube was really shoved down completely, raising it up high stopped the water from coming down in the bowl. i need one of those hooks tho, maybe make it myself or just cut the tube in half so that it just gets in barely. i didn't know about the tube until i accidentally moved and noticed the water stopped. good vid, thanks!
You can bend up a paper clip to hold the rubber tube - the key is that the water just needs to go into the flush valve (big tube) and a short rubber tube will push itself out if you don’t have some sort of clip. Hope you’ve already solved it!
@@netlawyerdc i did what you said some days after posting my comment and it would work for a few hours but then again it would start to drip to the point where the paperclip suggestion wasn't working anymore, changed the whole thing in the toilet, good as new. thanks for replying.
After having the handy guy come put twice to fix the damn toliet in my rental property THIS was the problem all along. My wallet and I thank you. Looking forward to a much lower water bill now.
This was by far the most useful tip. Thank you! Can you please explain - adjusting their water level in the bowl and tank. Your explanation was too the point, terse and easy to understand. Thank you very much.
OMG. Thank you! Replaced the flapper. Toilet still ran. So frustrating because this is all anyone else ever says to do. Watched your video, literally pulled the refill tube 1/2" upwards, and my toilet is fixed. Probably would have paid a plumber $250 to come out for that one second fix. Thank you, sir.
Brilliant! At last I happened onto the right video. Thank you for solving a problem that was driving me nuts. All the other videos I watched only discussed the flapper, not the issue in my case. Thanks for sharing your knowledge. Huge help.
For years I've done work in all of my bathrooms I have three of them. I could not understand because I replace the flap within the last year and now your tip helped me thank you very much. By the way I love the Eastern accent I want to say Long island or New York.
The toilet in my apartment has been ghost flushing for ages, maintenance even tried to fix it by replacing a valve and the problem kept on happening. Plus it would make a horrible honking noise every time the tank refill started. Moving this tube fixed the problem! Thanks!!
Thank you i installed a new Fluid master and flapper valve shoved the long rubber fill tube down the overflow, and had the seepage problem.I was racking my brain out until i watched your video.Problem solved ,thank you again.
YES YES YES! THANK YOU! I replaced the flapper but tank was still leaking. I was just about to decide to attempt to replace the entire flush valve. I knew that could be a recipe for disaster. Instead I just pulled the refill tube end up higher in the overflow tube and Voila! Problem solved in 2 seconds for $0 ...sanity restored for now
This video saved my sanity, thank you so much! I had no idea there was a syphon effect, and now that I've watched this video, it makes so much sense. I will never make this mistake again!
I have been fighting this problem off and on for months. I replaced everything in the tank, and even pulled the tank off. I wasted probably 80.00 bucks in flapper valves, fill valves, etc... Finally, I get the answer... from your video! Thank you, thank you, thank you, thank, you.....
Thank you 😘 my long skinny tube popped out where the clamp holds in in the top of the water pipe, but the clamp is still attached,so I'm just clamp it back together,my tub hanging down in the tank behind the tube 😁
Thank you for the tip. If I sometimes hear a very slight trickling noise but there aren't any phantom flushes, am I still losing water and, if so, how? The issue is in a guest bath and the sound isn't noticeable unless I'm in it, so there really isn't an annoyance issue.
Had this issue with one of my toilets last month and I ended up buying/installing all new parts for it. Still had that annoying "drip-drip" sound though. Tried your method and it's fixed. Thank You!

I'll check mine to see. I replaced the gasket/flapper disc on the actuator and it's still leaking. So I'll check the hose out. If it's not that it has to be cracked somewhere. Thanks.
Thats crazy.... usually i am able to fogured out everything pretty fast. But this just drove me nuts. Was planning to replace my flapper tube even thought i didnt feel any imperfections on plastic tube. Something new today. Thank you.
I am going to echo all the other commenters. Great video. Thanks so much. Such a simple tweak but able to impact the entire operation. I really appreciate the help!!
Will that cause water to actually leave the tank? I changed the flapper and lever. Water leakes and caused the float to engage the valve every 5 or 10 minutes
my toilet is constantly running and I've discovered the tube is entirely missing! No idea how it was working fine before this. I've guess any plastic 1/4 inch tubing will do?
I caused my own problem. When the refill tube was at the top of the overflow tube, I would hear the water trickle in after the fill for another 30-60 seconds and that was interrupting my sleep time. So I shoved the refill tube all the way down the overflow tube to solve the problem. What I don't get though is if more water was being siphoned in, why does the tank water level continuously drop, causing the partial refill every 20 mins?
Hey Robert, Thanks for tip. Unfortunately, my refill tube is short like the white one in your clip and I still have water dripping from the refill tube.
If the re-fill tube is in the correct place and the flapper is in good condition, I'd look at replacing the fill valve itself. Quite possible it's not shutting 100% and passing water. If you have a shut-off valve down below, try shutting it off and see if the water stops. Regards, Bob.
Thanks for the response Bob. However, the flapper is new and I don't have a shut-off valve installed. Is there anything I can try (I plan to install the shut off valve in the summer)?

bought a fill valve 3 hours before watching this vid lol. this is very helpful. thanks!
Dude. I never comment on social media. However, YOU ARE THE MAN. Thank you!
Why does the refill tube need to be in or over the overflow tube at all?

So that tube is meant to be putting water into the overflow tube?

Hey Robert,
Thanks for tip.
