Thank you! I just discovered a necklace that was in my box of costume jewelry from my late grandmother are real pearls. It was an emotional discovery, and my family is happy for me to keep them. I wore them immediately and but the cord broke moments later and I was devastated. I can't afford the jeweler's quote to have them repaired, but your video makes it look very doable, and even has the french wire ends I prefer over the crimp they were going to use. Thank you for your time making this video, and I'm excited to purchase what I need to repair and wear our surprise family heirloom!
I strung a set of pearls for my daughter a few years ago using this method. The holes in the pearls were too small and it fought me like crazy. I wasn't able to use the Griffin cord because it doesn't come thin enough. The knots kept catching, and the friction of pulling the string through the pearls repeatedly really wore the thread down. But in the end I had a beautiful strand for her! She insisted on wearing them constantly , including while skateboarding, and eventually they broke - mostly due, I'm sure, to how I weakened the thread from the too-small holes. The knots held, though!! I took the time to bore each pearl out a little they finally accepted a double-thickness of Griffin #2 silk. This time they threaded beautifully, only took 90 minutes (instead of over 4 hours!), and have a much better drape. THANK YOU for posting this!!!

Thank you for this great video. I was able to restring a old pearl necklace that was given to me as a gift. The string broke the first time they put it on me. I had to adjust a little because it had knots between each pearl. If anyone watching this that needs to put knots between make sure you use a little more than double the string in front. I just put a second knot the same way i did the first one. I had to order more string and redo it because there wasn’t enough string in front to finish the whole strand with double knots.

I have some amber beads i want to restring. I havent worked up the courage to get started yet...i keep watching videos and there r different methods and supplies for usually doing the beginnings and ends. The holes r drilled pretty large. I think i will need a thick string and bigger more visible knot?

I have a Vintage graduated double strand of Angelskin Coral necklace that was given to me 30 yrs ? ago or so that broke. I needed to get them restrung so I bought silk cord, G S Hypo Cement and ordered the Gimp. I've got one strand done and it's perfect. I did watch a couple other videos but yours was a better more professional method. Once I finish restringing this necklace I'm hoping to sell it and get a good price. Thank you Lloyd
If you gave trouble getting the needle/cord through, perch the pearl atop the side of your finger, and pinch the through strand below your finger tightly. That opens a gap between the through strand and the bead, makes it tons easier to thread through that second time.
Do they make the gimp wire in larger sizes? I have some 9-10 mm potato,pearls with large holes, so I’m probably going to need silk cord that’s thicker than the #2 shown here in the demo.
I appreciate the video, but it would have been helpful if you had mentioned the glue at the beginning. You say I'll need French Wire and Bead Cord - which I got - but I didn't find out about the glue until I was at the end of the strand and didn't have any.
Gimp gives the most professional look. Bead tips would work fine. Another choice would be wire guardians. They are a u shaped. We use the with gemstones.

Awesome tutorial! I’ve been having trouble stringing a broken pearl necklace and this video really helps. Just a questions, will the gs hypo cement glue cause a reaction on natural pearls? Because they are extremely sensitive to acid but I’ve seen many jewellers using this glue on pearls. So i was just wondering if it will cause a reaction on it.
I understand how different areas have their own names for things...however.....gimp is a macrame braided cord that is put on blinds, shades and clothing. What you are using is called french wire for those that arent familiar for purchasing the correct product to finish your necklace.

I agree with the others, you should have shown how to do the last knots. I do have a question, I tried this method and I ran short of silk. I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong. I allowed about 12" at the end of the strand, the only thing different is I was knotting opal rondelle's. I did do double knots. The first try I ended just starting over, when I did it again I just added more silk instead of starting over again. Hopefully you can help me. I did like your video, yours was the only one I found that showed how to do it that way. So thank you!
I also left 12" at the top as the video said but also ran short and had to start all over again and purchase another thing of silk with the needle. This time I will leave at least 24" at the top for an 18 inch strand.
Isn't the reason you do knotted pearls is to see the knots? I'm just learning so just asking. Could you just string the pearls like other beads if you are not going to see the knots? Matching the hole size and the silk size does that I've heard. Thanks for the video.
the two points of having knots are 1) to keep all of the beads from falling off should the thread break, and 2) to keep the beads from rubbing aginst each other wearing flat spots around the drilled holes. nether of these require much of the knot to show.
The method this chap has shown is for fine pearl stringing, and such method is for the 2 reasons described. There's nothing to stop you from using say, no. 6 silk & doing a single knot (you would only thread once thru) if you wanted the knot to show - I quite like that look for some things.
If it is the exact same look i dont even know why anyone would try and use tweezers or an awl. You just need to use a size 2 silk instead of 4. So much easier. Even though i am pretty good at knotting.with an ez knotter, i can be going.for an hour making.great tight knots, and then make a bad knot that i cannot untangle. Then the only choice is to add larger beads to fill over the bad knot
Although you seem like a really warm, friendly, helpful person, I just found this one of the hardest video tutorials to follow that I have ever watched...and I have watched hundreds of jewelry making, painting, DIY, etc. video tutorials. I was so totally lost even at the very beginning...I did not understand what you were doing as I don't think you explained it all step by step..and then at the end you didn't show how you did it at all...maybe try another take and let us know if you do...I hate to see what is probably a great technique and a really nice person not get the audience they should have and to be able to help as many of us as you can...just my humble suggestions & opinion of course...thanks for your great voice, a really good effort and God Bless You!

I too ran short with 5 pearls left. Not a problem. Got another needle & simply worked backwards. No one will ever know.

Why didn't you video the finishing of the end of the strand? I'm sure lots of watchers felt let down with you omitting this vital part!!
I got some pearls from China and the holes look small. I’m not sure what size string I should get. Maybe 2, like yours?
