It's important to note that Griffin silk cord must be pre-stretched before use. It can stretch several inches once the weight of the beads is added, and the project ends up with a millimeter or two of space between each bead and each knot within a few days or a week of completion. I taught bead knotting by the tweezer method at a bead store for several years and I guarantee this is really crucial. Just unwind the whole card, anchor one end to anything stable, and pull on the thread (not the needle) until all the card dents are gone, and the cord no longer retracts when you let go.
Hey there, new to this method of heading using cordage (I’m used to the clear nylon non-stretch stuff), does what you’re saying also apply to that twisted nylon cordage that’s very similar looking to what’s in the video here? :)
I have been creating and selling jewelry for many years. I never could successfully use tweezers until I came upon your video! I thank you. And my 66 year old hands thank you too!
Glad that you agreed that using tweezers is your favorite method. I teach pearl knotting and use bent nose tweezers with which you can grab the cord by the very tip allowing the knot to be closer to the bead.
FYI on turquoise for everyone watching: Turquoise is naturally a 4-6 on the Mohs scale- not too hard and so it’s usually stabilized which means it’s steeped in acrylic and / or epoxy and that process hardens it and emboldens the color. Natural turquoise beads are expensive and only come from reputable people who’d advertise it big. Most turquoise at the stores like Michaels - it’s dyed howelite.
Thank you for this info! I bought my turquoise only from gem & bead shows and have a Persian Blue piece, one that's Egyptian turquoise and what purports to be Native turquoise.
Hey, thanks for this information about turquoise and the of stabilising. I often hear those who sale the “real” turquoise, speak of this with distain and I wondered why. 👍🏼
True turquoise stones are going to have the distinct color/s (which can range from greenish to green-blue to bluish to greenish-brown), they can be found in a variety of different unrelated species of stones but the main reason they’re expensive is because the color/s in combination with copper and the conditions in nature to achieve the color/s have to be right… it’s a very difficult stone to replicate by synthetic means which is why the fake versions look so “fake”, i.e., dyed howlite. The Egyptian variety is one of the most expensive for obvious reasons of shortages through extensive mining.
Thank you for all the great info! I was a hardcore wire beader for years, but got preoccupied with other things and my beads just sat in boxes. Now my mom and I have dusted off the cases, sorted our treasures, and we’re ready to take our gemstones to a higher level with hand-knotting. I have been excited to get started, but I honestly had no idea how. Thank you for helping me find my way. 😁
I have never been able to properly knot despite having been shown multiple times, but having you show the process in 1st person camera has helped me immensely and I actually managed to properly knot my first bead necklace Thank you so much for the video
FINALLY!!!! I've watched so many tutorials on this beating tool and here I am, lots of wasted time later, now figuring it out THANKS TO YOU!!!! NOW I CAN GET ON WITH MY WORK!!! 😂 Seriously, thank you very very much 💗
I thought I’d love the last 2 methods because I tend to have hand and wrist problems but the tweezers just made more sense. Thanks for teaching these 😊
A wonderful tutorial. It is very helpful that you show how to use the different knotting tools. Thank you! I am impressed that someone so young is so thoughtful of those who have hand pain and cannot apply much pressure to the task.
Great job Becky! Love your demos & instructions- exactly as the title clearly states: explanation of methods, tools & more. YT videos are nice b/c you can watch the whole thing or fast forward if you prefer. Personally, I liked the review of techniques. Keep up the good work. KC 😊
Thank you! Very helpful. Nice to see different options offered and demonstrated. I use the Griffin Silk Cord and I stretch the cord overnight. I hang it by using tape at the end of the cord to my closet door and weigh it down gently with little rubber tipped clips attached to the needle. After seeing how much the silk stretches, nothing more frustrating than to have to go back to a completed project and have to restring your piece. I am going to try the Amiet Cord also.
This is great I learnt so much from this. I'm learning to male chakra bracelets but want to do the odd knotting to add some style. I'm just working out what tools I need to make the knots
Thank you so much for this video I did my first bead knot (with tweezers) project for my husband and it came out pretty nice. More importantly my husband loved it 😊
You can save the French Wire by carefully wrapping it around a beading needle ~ like a size 10 ~ which will allow a smaller beading needle to go through again. Also, put your clam shell/knot hider on first when knotting
Hi, I was curious about the second necklace that is in the video. I like the way the beads are strung on it. What is that technique called and do you have a video on how it is done?
Hi do you mean our Tahitian Goddess Necklace: artbeads.com/design-studio/tahitian-goddess-crystal-pearl-crochet-necklace/ It is actually a simple crochet chain stitch. You can find a tutorial with the link I provided and we do have videos linked there.
I have fresh water pearls that I have to rebead. I like the idea to use the tweezer. However, I couldn’t find think pearl color cord. Do you sell them?
Thank you for this wonderful tutorial! I would just like to note that real silk cord is made from silk months that are raised unnaturally and boiled alive for their silk. Go with the poly.
Hi, they are a part of this tool set: artbeads.com/jewelry-supplies/-beadsmith-zebra-tool-kit-tool-0268/ it's currently out of stock, but you can sign up for email notifications!
I'd like to make the bracelet you had on the table at the end of the knotting video where you were showing how to use the french wire to put on the end of knotting the beads. Section24:10
I tried using the tweezer method on elastic thread and I still have trouble making the knot near the pearl. Initially when I push the knot and tweezer down, it's ok. But when I remove the tweezer and pull the knot tight, the knot went far away from the pearl. Any tips?
I tried first method with tiny beads and DMC moline threads. Know is not as close to the bead as I wished. I think it works only with bigger beads and silky type of thread
I have a Victorian style necklace of pearls with amethyst accents which needs to be restrung. it didn't have knots, I'm concerned if I do knotting it will be a problem with making it too big. Any advice?
How do you know what the width of the silk/cord you should use? Beginner here. I bought a pearl necklace not knowing it was on a metallic wire to wrap around. I want to make it into a necklace instead. The pearls are different sizes and I want to use silk to string them. Any suggestions?
I also like to use crimp at the end of my finished bead. I use a crimp tool to close it. if you don't it the crimp will fall. Super glue is option to put on the crimp
Hi there, you can use any of the techniques featured in this video to make the knots, and it looks like we also have a simple crochet chain stitch project on display at that time in the video. You can find the tutorial for it here: artbeads.com/design-studio/tahitian-goddess-crystal-pearl-crochet-necklace/
I'm really struggling with hand knotting. I am using real silk and can knot the beads tight enough together, but if the bead gets pulled in the opposite direcrion against the knot I just made, it pushes the once snug knot up the string creating a space and ruining everything I have just done. Trying not to get discouraged.
I totally enjoyed watching this tutorial with Becky on bead knotting. Her explanations of each step were very easy to understand. What I didn't understand was that the video I was watching occasionally would flip to another tutorial that had absolutely nothing to do with what Becky was teaching about bead knotting. Don't know if it was my computer or not. Don't really understand how it could have been. Have any other people had this problem? I have never experienced this before, and I have watched many many tutorials...
Welcome, Melissa! You can use S-Lon to knot, as long as the beads you are using fit on the cord. S-Lon Micro Cord would be a great option: artbeads.com/search-results/?q=micro%20cord
I meant to put micro, the little spools, I have tons of colors…… I know it’s a good size cord for pearls, but would you double it if the holes were a little bigger or that’s not a good idea?
It's so funny cause I was just gonna say I think I prefer the tweezers to me it just makes more since 1st I'm sure it's cheaper u can find decent tweezers for cheap if u know where to look and most women already have tweezers lol I'm an crocheter but I have interest in beads and jewelry painting. I have the need for artistic expression . My grandmother and great grandmother and my mother made teddy bears dolls quilts crocheting as well and when I was in school I always failed art I couldn't draw to save my life So later I started to explore and realized art comes in many forms it's to bad my art teachers didn't allow us to explore more avenues of art .
We have used a variety of materials when stringing stones, from silk and beading jewelry wire, to nylon and polyester. Another favorite we like to use for knotting between gemstones is TOHO Amiet Cord: artbeads.com/toho-amiet-beading-thread/

Thank you for telling us about this.👍🏼❤️ This is really good to know!
Many thanks for this info. I have a lot of this silk cord but didn't start using it until recently.
Thx for sharing your knowledge

Glad that you agreed that using tweezers is your favorite method. I teach pearl knotting and use bent nose tweezers with which you can grab the cord by the very tip allowing the knot to be closer to the bead.
Lots of tips for the beginner (like me). Thanks for the thorough video, that wasn't overwhelming at under 25 minutes. Liked and saved.

The tweezer method that you show is so much easier than the way I learned at first. Love it. Thanks for that Becky.
I'm so glad you found it helpful, Lois!
Thank You for sharing those methods. Loved the pieces!
Thank you , Lovse seeing the different methods,

thanks for this video! Can you make one regarding how to connect two silk threads for longer malas? (because I can't find a thread longer than 2m)
Thank you for this wonderful tutorial! I would just like to note that real silk cord is made from silk months that are raised unnaturally and boiled alive for their silk. Go with the poly.
Aww they boil the moths alive? That's sick who does that except a sick dog of a person and even dogs aren't that sick
Thanks. Very good presentation.
Good morning! Loved your video. Where did you get your tweezers? I looked on your website, but did not see the black and white ones.
Hi, they are a part of this tool set: artbeads.com/jewelry-supplies/-beadsmith-zebra-tool-kit-tool-0268/ it's currently out of stock, but you can sign up for email notifications!
I liked the one with tweezers
Thanks for your help, understanding. 😊
This was a great video, thanks. Do you sell the black and white handle cutting tool and tweezers?
Yes we do, in a set with a matching case: artbeads.com/jewelry-supplies/-beadsmith-zebra-tool-kit-tool-0268/ One of my favorite tool sets! - Becky
Gracias!! El de la pinza funcionó súper genial. Gracias por compartir conocimientos me has facilitado el trabajo con esta técnica. 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
100% useful thumbs up, very helpful
I'd like to make the bracelet you had on the table at the end of the knotting video where you were showing how to use the french wire to put on the end of knotting the beads. Section24:10

I have beads with very tiny holes, what is the best thread for knotting?
I tried using the tweezer method on elastic thread and I still have trouble making the knot near the pearl.
Initially when I push the knot and tweezer down, it's ok. But when I remove the tweezer and pull the knot tight, the knot went far away from the pearl.

Sorry for the newbie question but can tiger tail wire be knotted too?
I tried first method with tiny beads and DMC moline threads. Know is not as close to the bead as I wished. I think it works only with bigger beads and silky type of thread
Knot’ I meant 😅
Wonderful video!
Very informative and helpful
So glad you found this helpful, Gloria!
I have a Victorian style necklace of pearls with amethyst accents which needs to be restrung. it didn't have knots, I'm concerned if I do knotting it will be a problem with making it too big. Any advice?
Yes it will add length but you can just resize when almost to the end so just add less of the beads towards the end
@@jmunoz172 due to the intricate design, I don't think that would work. I probably need to bite the bulllet and pay to have a pro do it.
How do you know what the width of the silk/cord you should use? Beginner here. I bought a pearl necklace not knowing it was on a metallic wire to wrap around. I want to make it into a necklace instead. The pearls are different sizes and I want to use silk to string them. Any suggestions?
It depends on the hole size of the pearls. The cord needs to be a smaller diameter than the smallest hole size you are working with.
you are an excellaent teacher thanks
I also like to use crimp at the end of my finished bead. I use a crimp tool to close it. if you don't it the crimp will fall. Super glue is option to put on the crimp
Where can I purchase beads and findings on line..name of outlet
In Amazon
Lovws seeing rhus again.
TURQUOISE + LABRADORITE BID IS USED FOR Relationship or which purpose ?
Hi, thank you for showing all the methods :). How do you make that other knots you had at the end of your video when you show how to use French wire?
Hi there, you can use any of the techniques featured in this video to make the knots, and it looks like we also have a simple crochet chain stitch project on display at that time in the video. You can find the tutorial for it here: artbeads.com/design-studio/tahitian-goddess-crystal-pearl-crochet-necklace/
Is it possible that you could just do an overhand knot with no beads and if you use a string use the opposite of the bead color would be very helpful
Hi any tips on how to finish stringing a bead bracelet with large holed beads? Just knotting after the last bead is not safe! Thanks
Maybe reduce down to a smaller bead (a few) at the end, or barrel knots, or button closure, or crimp beads/cover)
I think you made 2 knots after the bead device and the board.... was that intentional or no ?
thank you! Super helpful.
I'm really struggling with hand knotting. I am using real silk and can knot the beads tight enough together, but if the bead gets pulled in the opposite direcrion against the knot I just made, it pushes the once snug knot up the string creating a space and ruining everything I have just done. Try pre-stretching your cord before use. Space between beads after knotting can happen if the silk is not stretched beforehand.
Thank you for your hard work!!!
Thank you for watching!
How do you call that blue tool? It seems very easy😊
It's the Knot-a-Bead tool! artbeads.com/jewelry-supplies/beadalon-knot-bead-tabletop-knotter-tool/

I agree on the tweezers.
Gotta love tweezers for knotting! They come in handy for so many other techniques, too.
Thank you so much
