- Just as explorers have always carried knives, modern astronauts often bring blades with them as they journey among the stars. From the Randall 17 Astro carried on the first manned NASA flight in 1961, to the Emerson SpecWar and Soviet fixed blades that have been used more recently. These are the knives that were made to aid the bravest adventurers in the universe...
Obviously a knife is essential for fighting xenomorphs, Klingons, AI gone wild, etc.
Somebody better find that lost astro

The question is, really, why wouldn’t you need a pistol machete in space?

Anybody knows what that funky looking Spyderco is? The most right one…..
The knife was lost when Alan Shepard jettisoned the hatch? Was it just laying around, not secured in the capsule ? Don't believe it. Someone has a really nice souvenir!
Gus Grissom blew the hatch, not Shepard. Gus's capsule went down with knife inside. They recovered the capsule 38 years later. The knife is now in the Smithsonian.
