Cold water on the fuel rail when vapor locked was a good trick!

It's my favorite line. It came out so naturally with equally honest natural response🦋
10" wide rims are terrible. I'll stick to my 8's
“Should have listened to Ed!”
I see a new line of stickers and hats. Lol
👏
Some t-shirts with that would be cool too
Great idea!
And one saying "we'll get em out"
😂😂😂❤❤❤
Growing up we had a '65 Jeep Pickup that would vaporlock... heartwarming to know Jeep was able to retain that function even with EFI.
3 cheers for ethanol. Water bonds to the alcohol then the water boils in the fuel line near the exhaust manifold..
@@h.r.puffnstuff8705 only in fuel that is old or or stored improperly
@@h.r.puffnstuff8705 I mean that'll take a month or so to happen though! They drive enough that their fuel is probably pretty fresh and therefore probably has minimal water content.
@@jewsrbad 1
@@savagebob911 Not that your commentary regarding alcohol is wrong but vapor lock has been a problem ever since the mechanical fuel pump was installed to draw fuel past any hot area on the way to the engine. Odd as it might seem, prior to fuel pumps, gasoline was gravity fed to the engine before fuel pumps were invented. The Model T Ford had its tank mounted above the cowling, below the windshield, thereby above the engine.
When pumps were added to the system, mechanics were wrapping fuel lines with all sort of shields to keep the heat out. Some worked better than others but if it was hot enough, the fuel vaporized and everyone got to take a break until it cooled and re-condensed.
The best solution to date (aside from electric cars and they have their own issues...) is an electric fuel pump placed near (but NOT in the fuel tank). Fuel is pumped to the engine under pressure and there are no vapor locks. Whether the intake uses carbs or fuel injection, they all like to get their feed under pressure.
What I love about this channel is it shows such awesome, good hearted, normal people doing something they are passionate about. UA-cam has pretty slim pickings for that kind of content these days, and it is so refreshing to see some quality content about something I am interested in.
Very true! That’s how i found this channel! Watching another great channel called Gridlessness! They are just as awesome! Maybe not “normal” 😆
It is really refreshing to see a channel that doesn't put others down just to make them try to look better. Just a bunch of real people doing real jobs. And just being real.
You often hear Matt say I’m here I’ll do it for free.
Ed’s back!
Ur username is straight fire. Thanks for the update on Ed.
Did he find any Gold???
@@What..a..shambles same thing I was wondering 👊👍
Ed says 'keep watchin' that's what I'm going to do
THAT felt like i was watching a full-length movie and it was only 15 minutes long!!!...great job, great action/adventure scenes, fantastic stunt work, people stranded and dying, walking for help in the desert, hot women, tough guys, dogs, Ed, - just fantastic!
Funny thing is out there all the women are hot, its 104 degrees.
I don´t know how i suscribed, but it is my favourite channel now
15 minutes of Matt action probably has more minutes of action in it than a 90 minute movie. Plus it has real characters.
Definitely the stunt work! Who is your double when its 111 outside?
either they figure it out themselves (i figure Matt is no dummy) or youtube has people that coach them on the structure of storytelling. the best yt channels seem to have this.
One of things that separates your videos from the the others is your use of a dedicated camera operator. Much better pictures and less bounce. Good job. And your quiet demeanor.
he's been working on his own Chanel it's called All terrain Randy
He's a big cranky red head. He needs to remain calm.
I removed the clinometer installed in my Jeep because I found it was impossible to read it as I rolled down the mountainside... ;-)

LMAO...I find it pretty useless as well...I still keep it though because I like to tell my passengers: "Keep track of that bubble...if we roll over, let me know what the angle was just before we tipped." hahahahaha...I love my Jeep.

I love old Ed . He's a good natured man, I hope someone helps him stand back up . If we're lucky we'll live to be as old as he and we'll rely on our youngsters to lend a helping hand too !
Somehow UA-cam recommended me your channel, and now im hooked. You have a very difficult yet fun job.
Thanks for taking good care of Ed. He's a real treasure!
Can we all just take a minute to appreciate Ed's shirt...not many people can pull off the flower print.
Is Ed a Boogalooer?
That fuel rail trick was amazing, thank you for sharing you wisdom. Thats why experience is invaluable!

You need a "Super Soaker" in your emergency pack for cooling the fuel rail and radiator LOL...
National geographic: Near the yellow banana we can find a Matt and a Rudy of the caves, they are kind creatures that use to help another ones that get stuck.
Welcome back, Ed! You have been missed.
This make me depressed about going to my desk job after the weekend.
I think of it as earning more money for next weekend!!!!!
Do either 8” wheels and weld on beadlocks, or even a 7” wheel and weld on beadlocks. Because keep in mind the weld on beadlocks will add some width to the wheel👌🏼
Notification SQUAD!!!!
But on a serious note, I found your channel back in the beginning of quarantine and it actually inspired me to not give up on my Jeep and finish building it out. Here's to hoping I can make the trip out there one day and catch you on the dunes! Just hopefully not because I have to get a tow....
Matt: did anybody learn anything from that? Ed: I didn’t learn a thing.
For Matt, have you ever considered installing spray bars across the radiator to increase cooling. They do that on racing airplanes. It would be easier than trying to pour water on the radiators for when your rig gets very hot.
Beverly Chmelik he’ll never remember to fill the system. 🤣
Racing airplanes ? Is that even a thing ?

Bead locks and 8 inch wide rims. You got it right.
Yeah I don't understand why he doesn't have beadlocks for work like this. Lol.
Glad to see Ed back hope his gold trip was successful! Best to all of you
I’ve had my 1968 Z-28 Camaro since August 3, 1976 (44 years) , at the drag strip I would run 5-6 psi in 9” slicks, these were screwed to the Cragar rims with 5 screws in each bead. Found out 3-1/2 psi wasn’t enough- plenty of launch but when I unloaded the slicks at 115 mph, we were all over the track - almost lost it!! Rim locks a must, thx for the great vids. Dad and I belonger to Sundowners 4wd club in L.A. area EVERYONE CARRIED STARTING FLUID TO INFLATE TIRES
I can’t get enough of this channel I’ve watched every video in 1 week
Entire reason you have Ed is for his advice and experience. Didn’t take it. Got stuck. Dude!
Gotta keep watching. Ed said! Love seeing that guy on here.
What Matt needs is to take a can of easy start, that could have resolved both his tyre off the bead and vapour lock issue 😁😉
Yep. Works a treat. In sand there isn't even really risk for fire or anything. No reason not to do it
Thought you were stuck for sure when the nose hit the sand. That jeep is a beast!
Here's the best line from this one it's @10:30 or so..... "I wasn't even doing anything". Lol. Who hasn't said that right after tragedy? Lol

The air quality index has me trapped indoors and to pass the time got into binge watching Matt's recovery vids. Several times I commented they don't seem to air down far enough...well this last video told me why. I used to run 8" steel wheels and lost a driver front at about the same angle on the Ducy Ershim trail, now I run Birddog wheels, 10" wide that have a little bump on a wide bead land to help maintain the seal. Burped some air but have not lost a bead yet. That's not the reason I decided to reply to this video. I was watching the cold water being poured on a hot fuel rail, maybe stock fuel injectors, over the intake manifold and dripping onto the hot exhaust manifold, not that they are prone to cracking or anything, but, a problem I had on my 03 Rubicon straight 6. Remembering when it was new, that problem did not exist. 17 years and 70k miles later it would happen when I fired it up to drive it 20 feet, kill it to shut the gate, since it is a stick and the e-brake won't hold it on 5 degree incline with 35s. It was getting embarrassing. A friend of mine, (who has had his hot rod on the cover of HotRod magazine 2 times), mentioned I cannot have vapor lock at 40psi. Doesn't that make sence? After much research, I stumbled across K suspension. They have 12 hole injector upgrades with a lifetime warranty. Imagine that? They only use a very small percent of extra fuel, My stock one holers were rated at 247cc and the 12 hole are 249cc. I grilled these guys with emails and they responded every time, since I have a SoCA street legal jeep. There are claims of improved fuel economy and HP, but I can't tell, what I can tell is the heat sink issue, vapor lock thingy, no longer exists, and that was what I was looking to cure. To be fair, it could have been a combination of my stock coil rail, which was a waste spark system, meaning it sparked every rotation. My smog guy suggested new injectors and new coil rail, so I also did their OEM Viper ignition coil mod and wire retro fit, as the replacement OEM coil rails seem to last only a few years and are expensive. The only issue with the coil was the wire diagram was off, so don't do this upgrade on the side of the road, unless you are good at viewing diagrams in reverse and upside down. Maybe request the proper wire diagram after the order. Hope this tip helps you and I wear XL 8D
This xj is the greatest thing I've watched all year. Thank you!

I’ve got 7 or so Jeeps with 4.0’s and do a lot of trail riding/rock crawling. Go ahead and add some insulation between the exhaust manifold and intake manifold. Someone sells a nice pre cut kit for around the injectors as well. You should also look into the Ford Explorer fan mod.

Good point on the recovery hook. Most people don't know the difference between tow, recovery and shipping hooks. They all have their intended direction of load and limitations. Thanks for noting that.
I love seeing good ol Ed being around!
I think I just watched an advertisement for FABRATS. Bahaha!
Its an "Inclinometer", Matt. Or the dummies guide to a rollover.
4 "ideas" for you Matt. 1. A really good ice chest. 2. Paddle tires (2 rear min.) with "bead locks"..lol. 3. Use the lowest octane gas available to help prevent vapor lock. 4. Get a smaller trailer!
I learn about recovery from your channel. This time I learned about vapor locking and the solution. Thanks
Oof, lucky that headlight washer didn't break when you pulled that

The lesson: If you go looking for trouble, you just might find it. On the other hand, offroading would be really boring if you learn that lesson.
It is kind of the point. Take perfectly good vehicle, drive it in such a way that it either breaks or gets stuck. Then throw a few more hundred or thousands of dollars at the vehicle. Rinse and repeat.
But IN THAT EXTREME HEAT ,,,,, Yikes !!!!!
Vapor lock! Man, that brings back memories of being out in the middle of nowhere in southern Utah in a Jeep Cherokee.
Damn you! I was making progress on my bathroom remodel and someone texted me. After I checked that message, your "new" video notification popped up and I saw the picture of your truck in a f***ed up position. I had to find out what the hell happened.
As a result, I ended up taking a 30+ minute break to watch that video, and then ANOTHER one of your videos.
I don't even do off-roading in my Jeep or my truck but for some reason I have really enjoyed watching your recovery videos.
I have always owned a Grand Cherokee for the past 20 years, I've gone through several of them, always buying used. I also have owned multiple other four-wheel drive pickup trucks. My Grand Cherokees have always been substantially better in poor road conditions and I have used my Grand Cherokees to pull much larger AWD SUVs & 4x4 trucks (Ford, Dodge, Chevy and Toyota) from snowy) out of muddy ditches and embankments.
I just got rid of one of my Grand Cherokees that had over 340,000 miles on it and still ran just fine (not uncommon for the straight 6-cylinder engine in older Grand Cherokees) after a LOT if abuse.
I'd love to be able to upgrade my existing Grand Cherokee (V-8) with some of the off-roading that yours has.
Now damn it, I'm going to turn off my notification so I can get some work done here in the house.
I look forward to watching you continuing to rescue the non Grand Cherokee owners out there. LOL
OH THANK ED! I keep a “Viair” portable air pump in my truck, it has alligator clips on it so you can run off the car battery. Might want one of those on the rig? Great videos!!
Matt has a small compressor, he didn't bring it this time.
This video reminded me of "Flight of the Phoenix." Matt has to act more guilt ridden though like Jimmy Stewart.
A real Classic! Both of them.
Climbing down that ledge I couldn't believe it wasn't stuck. Great video guys.
Subaru's traction control is actually pretty dang awesome....we've seem the Scoobies outperform Jeeps in a lot of situation where it was just a traction issue. great video.
It was doing worse than the big volvo on 22’s though, the Subaru was digging itself in it was becoming a scubaru. the volvo was kind of moving and got closer to getting turned around and out.
If referring to “X-Mode” on certain model of Subaru then no, not for sand. X-Mode if fairly dim witted when I tested it I mean it can work I had it work but it’s “blind” is what I called it when I tested it. like constantly guessing until it lands on what works and alot of times what works isn’t even best option. I found more times then not turning X-Mode off and TC off and just going for it works better… well unless really in slick conditions then it start overriding you again from too much spin because the computer trying it’s damnest too save the CVT transmission. If you got a manual maybe and probably is different but most new buyers aren’t buying manual.
If they could disable traction control on the volvo however which you absolutely can do on these models volvo. my experience with modern Volvos and off-road mode option with DSTC disabled or reduced is it surprisingly capable… like it will fight its way through. And the transmutation is a normal slush box auto so it can spin and slip way more than a CVT without getting damaged so less chance of it stopping you and over riding. It’s also less “blind” vs X-Mode it knows where the slip is occurring and focuses on trying to over come it. Turns it’s open digs into LSD diffs using its brakes and matching side to side speed and shuffling power around. the key is however turning off traction control so doesn’t cut power, if leave TC (DSTC) enabled its forced to give up after a few seconds when it kicks in to try to stop the wheels from freely spinning. That’s why the volvo was feeling itself but keep stopping was stupid TC getting in the way.
Yeah, that sand is really soft and really deep but the Crosstreks are very light and have as good of a chance as any other AWD out there. The problem is usually that the driver does not know what settings to use, like for instance you want to turn traction control off and VDC. Unless you have the deep sand or mud later evolution of Xmode you are better off NOT using it because it will just turn off anyway and will kill your momentum. But the main issue is that people of any car brand do not have the right type of tires (wheels) and/or do not know that just having the right tire is not enough, you must also air it down so that it can deform and float the sand. The crosstrek actually has a lot of advantage over its bigger brothers because the brake system is smaller, allowing for smaller wheels and taller bigger sidewall tires that REALLY HELP alot when aired down compared to wheels that are too large on tires that don't have enough sidewall to float sand well. Databyter
That little cave is slightly better than "living in a van down by the river."
At least the van down by the river has access to cool water!
Matt try using a hand sprayer when your jeep overheats, holds about a gallon of water
Even better hook up a line with a sprayer to the wiper pump, the washer fluid will cool better than water
You should send a camera crew with Ed down to the claim! Have you ever thought of installing your windshield washer nozzles in front of your radiator so you can easily spray and cool it down?
This dude has the best jobs. UA-camr and off roading rescues🤙
You had me at "stranded"
Beadlocks welded on 8” wheels would do you wonders with that Jeep, especially with those mile stars (they have a very soft sidewall)
Yeah I was thinking beadlocks too
looks like Matt got knew tires, those weren't the milestars at 6:26. But yes beadlocks would be the way to go if he can legally run them on the roads, I know some states it is not legal.
He needs bead gripper rims as those are highway legal. I prefer them to beadlocks anyways. They perform almost as well except in the most highly extreme cases.
@@MrChrisb83 thats only if they catch you and the cop wants to ding you for it. otherwise, you are fine. its illegal in California and there are people that run them on the street here.
@@Stackali yea it's not very common to get a ticket for them. Maybe he could paint the ring and all the bolts black it'll look like all the other fake beadlocks.
