  • In this episode we will cover how to build the top part of our crochet sweater, also called the yoke. This is the most complex section of our sweater-making journey because of the various moving parts we must deal with and that's when stitch markers of various colors are essential to keep track of things.
    I want to give a shout out to the following UA-camrs for telling to their subscribers and members about my channel:

    Excellent explanation of how to set up the markers for the yoke. Your method of extending the length of the back of the sweater versus the front of the sweater is revolutionary! Especially appreciate you taking the time to explain why the back of the sweater should be longer than the front. Interestingly, this is also true for women’s sweaters. A lot of women’s patterns don’t make this accommodation because of course we’re larger in the front than most men are and need extra length to accommodate that. But not all women are that much larger than men. Those women who are less endowed, will end up with a much better fitting sweater following your method. Incidentally, in knitting we achieve added length to the back yoke of a sweater using short rows. And, although short rows can be used in crochet, your method is much easier to keep track of and I think more straightforward. Thanks for another excellent video!

      Pretty new crocheter here, but I think he’s doing it correctly. The half double crochet stitch has loops running along the side of the top stitches. It looks to me like he’s going into the front loop of the top stitches. Please someone, let me know if I’m wrong here.

    In 55 years I have knitted hundreds of jumpers from top to bottom, along with thousands of other things (socks, waistcoats, scarves, shawls etc.). I've also crocheted a lot of things, like clothes and decorations. But not so many jumpers and none from top to bottom. I'm really impressed with the way you handled the different heights of the front and back and the way you present your instructions. And I love the way you do your increases, something I've never seen before. I will definitely use them when I start this jumper.
    I want to give you a big compliment for your special way of sharing and making others understand your wonderful work.
    I am very happy to have discovered you here and I am sure your channel will be a great success as everything is right here - knowledge, passion and a great warmth. Many thanks dear Fabio.

Thank you for much for teaching us on the construction of a top-down yoke sweater. In all the years that I have watched other UA-camrs do tutorials on how to increase in a HDC stitch, I have NEVER seen your version and I LOVE IT! This is such a wonderfully detailed, informative, and well executed series of videos. I’m excited to try and figure out the gauge on different stitches. I’m not the biggest fan of hdc, but lately I’ve been really into griddle stitch for baby clothes. Leaving the seam open and positioning it on top of the shoulder would allow me to place buttons there to fit a cute sweater over a giant baby head.

I'm not even going to attempt this with the worsted weight and a size K hook. It's your pattern, I'll follow you. Oh, and I'm not surprised it's more detailed than I imagined; in fact, it should be, as simple men's sweater patterns (if you can find them) make for horrid apparel.

I am doing my crocheting homework with discounted, variegated Christmas yarn, so it looks like I’ll end up with an ugly Christmas sweater. 😂 It’s all they had at the store. The proper yarn will arrive in 7 days. Great technique, especially the increase stitch. Thought I would end up with holes. That starting seam could be placed at the front (not joined) to make a cardigan for another variation (not sure if it’s possible, as I am a beginner). Enjoyed the longer looks at your sweaters.❤

      @CrochetByFabio  23 дні тому

      That’s a great idea for a cardigan. Since a cardigan requires a 180-degree rotation of the seam, make sure you place the various stitch markers correctly so as to off center the neck hole in the correct direction.
      Also, I’m glad you noticed why I increase the way I do. ❤️

      Making a book was my original idea, but I do not know anyone in the publishing industry, so I went with UA-cam. I must say, I am enjoying the immediacy and the community building that the UA-cam platform offers compared to the much slower, traditional book publishing. Who knows? Maybe in the future if I am approached by a publisher? Why not? ❤️

I'm not doing this for a man but for me, so I'm not sure how it's going to work out but I'm ready to find out as if this works I'm sure i can work this method on other styles and useing different stitches too. Thank you for now. I will let you know how I'm doing.

    Your explanation of the neck hole being offset is a light bulb moment. Now I understand why my sweaters ride up in the back. Also, question: you are demonstrating the back and forth method which creates a seam (which I dislike). Why do you not demonstrate crocheting in the round?

    • @CrochetByFabio
      @CrochetByFabio  23 дні тому +4

      Because that’s more complicated due to the slant working in the spiral round adds to the moving parts we already have to deal with. We will cover that on a future sweater project, promise. ❤️

    Thank you so much for this series! Your increasing technique is very good to avoid holes by stretching the stitches with 2 hdc. It works great!
    Already started my yoke but I went a bit too fast before realising the way we need to move the burgundy stitch marker 🤭
    Still haven't quite understood by the way ; we need to move the stitch marker 2 stitches but counting from the previous increasing stitch marker, right?
    I'll have to start over tomorrow but I'm super excited for this!
    Thank you so much for sharing! It's amazing! ❤

    • @CrochetByFabio
      @CrochetByFabio  23 дні тому +2

      Thank you so much for your kind words! 🙏 Let me see if I can explain how to properly move the burgundy stitch markers. Every row, they need to be moved by two stitches going outward, each one in the direction of where the shoulders are. What makes it complicated is the fact that we are also working increases while also constantly changing direction (back and forth, back and forth, remember?). I find that if I count the stitches starting from the yellow stitch marker, I will position the burgundy stitch marker in the correct stitch. If instead I count two stitches from the previous position of the burgundy stitch marker, after a few rows, the burgundy stitch markers will have traveled independently (one farther out than the other one). Here is an example. Right before starting row (or round) 4, I will have to move the burgundy stitch markers two stitches, which means 6 stitches from their original position when they used to share the stitch with their respective yellow stitch markers. I hope I was able to be clearer here. ❤️

    • @atlsdnh2798
      @atlsdnh2798 23 дні тому

      Thank you so much for taking the time to answer! Now I get it! I was moving the burgundies two stitches from their previous space and not from the previous stitch marker and, obviously, one of the burgundies was traveling far apart... haha, I will start over today, I can't wait! Keep on the great work, I already know your channel is going to grow amazing! Greetings from France 🇫🇷 ❤

    Ciao Fabio, complimenti per il video, interessante e spiegato chiaramente. Mi piacerebbe sapere se nei tuoi futuri progetti e tutorial prevedi l'utilizzo di qualche punto particolare e forme di colli diversi da quello tondo, tipo quello a V. I maglioni delle foto sono molto belli (mi piace in particolare quello bianco con la sciarpa abbinata) sono tutti fatti a uncinetto?😊

      Grazie carissima! Sì, tutti all'uncinetto e tutti col collo rotondo. Non credo sia possibile fare il collo a V con la costruzione circolare. Drop-shoulders construction forse forse. Ma il drop-shoulders richiede prendere misure iniziali (cosa che mi rompe molto). LOL. Bacioni! ❤️

    I am loving this method! And your tutorials are great! I have a question, which may have been asked but I can't find it. When you rotate the neck by 2 stitch markers so the seam is not down your back, is it always 2 or does that depend on the number of stitch markers you have for your increases? Do you want the seam at about a 45⁰ angle or is it just 2 stitch markers?

    • @CrochetByFabio
      @CrochetByFabio  21 день тому

      Hi and great question, which, by the way, has not been asked before. So, do I want the seam at about 45° angle or is it just 2 stitch markers? For this particular sweater construction follow the 2 stitch markers rule. In future series, when I will cover the spiral construction, we will move the seam to the side in a different way. ❤️

  • @LM-js4dn
    @LM-js4dn 22 дні тому

    Question: since you are doing front loop stitches, working back and forth would create ribbing right? And working spiral would I guess be more uniform on every row?

    • @CrochetByFabio
      @CrochetByFabio  22 дні тому +1

      Great question. Whether worked in the round or back and forth, HDC-FLO will only create a decorative ridge. It’s not the direction of your stitching, but the loop chosen. Front loop = decorative ridge, back loop = ribbing.

    I have a question. When you are increasing in the extended half double crochet, are you using half double or extended? I may have misunderstood what you were saying. Thanks

    • @CrochetByFabio
      @CrochetByFabio  23 дні тому +3

      Great question. My signature increase is HDC-FLO + SC into front leg of HDC-FLO we just made. Whether the increase happens in the section of the yoke with extended HDC stitches or the regular HDC stitches, my increase never changes. It’s always those two stitches together.

      Some @michaels stores are better supplied than others. That’s where I bought the yarn for these tutorials because I didn’t want to wait the typical delivery time that online vendors have. But if you’re the patient kind and can wait 7 to 10 days for delivery, I have happily ordered from both @Herrschners and @Hobbiicom (Hobbii being my preferred between the two). Hope this helps.

    Question: When you move the stitch markers after each row, do you count the original spot as #1, or do you start the count in the stitch next to the original spot? (Original spot meaning the increase stitch)

    • @CrochetByFabio
      @CrochetByFabio  21 день тому +2

      Great question! As long as you remain consistent with how you do the counting, it doesn’t matter much whether you include that first stitch in the counting or not. As for me, I do not count it.
