I thought I was the only one who shouted along to the line "...so I kissed him upside the cranium with an aluminum baseball bat" until I saw them for the Pork Soda tour and the entire crowd shouted it too. Something was/is still wrong with all of us. :)😀
Anytime since I was about 14 if I touch anything that even looks kinda like a baseball bat or anything I can kiss anyone upside the cranium with the first and only words out my mouth is that. I imagine if I was dying and couldn’t speak the only thing I could say was that😂
Les Claypool and the boys were huge in the late 80's and 90's. Nothing else like them. Always fun to watch people listen to them who don't know what they're in for.
Les Claypool joined his first band Blind Illusion in the late 70's when he was still a teen... he was friends w/ Kirk Hammett (lead guitarist of Metallica, who also formed the thrash metal band Exodus) in school and auditioned for Metallica on bass in 1986 (Claypool was not a good fit and the job went to bassist Jason Newsted) Now, Les Claypool was a huge Rush fan... he grew up on the more prog rock genre of music in the 70's (Yes, King Crimson, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin...) and funk music (Parliament, Funkadelic...) and is a huge Beatles fan (He later formed the band The Claypool Lennon Delirium w/ Sean Lennon, son of the late John Lennon of The Beatles... a space fantasy rock band) and was also a Frank Zappa fan. Claypool had worked in the music scene in California for years before he formed Primus in the mid-80's as a quirky rock trio w/ his bass being the primary instrument of the band's sound... w/ Todd Huth (guitar) and Jay Lane (drums)... Their demo tape was titled 'Sausage' and recorded in 1988... Primus was not popular in the local scene, the odd band out between glam rock bands like Poison... L.A. Guns... and thrash metal bands like Death Angel... Heathen... Whenever Primus played gigs, the crowd would get irate and start chanting, "Primus sucks!" (which became their motto 😂) However, both Huth and Lane were replaced by Larry LaLonde (guitar) who had played for the extreme metal band Possessed... and Tim 'Herb' Alexander (drums) who was also a huge Rush fan... Claypool was frustrated by the lack of label interest and decided to record a Primus concert and release it independently in 1989 as their live debut album 'Suck on this'... consisting of weird, quirky and original songs like 'John the fisherman'... 'Pudding time' ... 'Pressman'... Primus then released their debut album 'Frizzle Fry' in 1990... on Caroline. In 1991, Primus was signed to Interscope Records and released the album 'Sailing the Seas of Cheese'... which got MTV airplay for 'Jerry was a race car driver'... 'Tommy the cat'... and eventually sold gold... then platinum in the USA. Primus opened for their heroes Rush on their 1992 tour... In 1993, Primus released 'Pork soda'... which gave them the huge singles - 'My name is Mud' ... 'Mr. Krinkle' ... 'DMV' ... and sold platinum. In 1995, their album 'Tales from the Punch Bowl' got Primus their biggest single - "Winona's big brown beaver"... However, drummer Tim 'Herb' Alexander left Primus in 1996. Primus hired Brian 'Brain' Mantia (drums) for 2 albums - 'The Brown album' (1997) and 'Anti Pop' (1999)... but neither albums sold up to expectation and Primus went on hiatus in 2000 after Brain left the band and joined Guns N' Roses for a while... Les Claypool used the time off to form a number of music projects that included Colonel Claypool's Fearless Flying Frog Brigade ... Oysterhead ... Duo de Twang ... Clonel Claypool's Bucket of Bernie Brains ... and a solo album as well. Primus returned to touring in 2003 w/ drummer Tim 'Herb' Alexander returning until 2006... Les Claypool has been actively playing w/ a number of projects that includes Duo de Twang... Claypool Lennon Delirium ... Currently, Primus is active w/ Tim 'Herb' Alexander returning on drums around 2014.
Les was upset MTV only played the Mr. Krinkle video like six times ever. I would be too after all the work that must've went into that awesome one-long-take video.
In the late 80’s early 90’s Primus was big….they headlined the 3rd Lollapalooza …Alice in Chains came on before them 😳they were in that 1st wave of alternative bands with Jane’s Addiction,Faith No More,Fishbone,Chili Peopers,Ministry,Butthole Surfers, the Cult,Social Distortion, etc
They are getting big again, They used to come around to my city Knoxville, but not any more lol to big for us this year :D Puscifer. Primus. A Perfect Circle. Sessanta. Tour, only in ATL or Nashville.
Dr Samuel Mudd treated the leg John Wilkes Booth broke when he jumped out of the balcony. After that his reputation was ruined. “Your name is Mudd” came to mean you had a bad rep too.
Per a very early interview, Les said he didn’t know how to play bass. But he did know how to play banjo, so he chose to play a bass guitar as a banjo, typically using the claw hammer technique. Hence the very fast runs and heavy slap sound
The funnest show I’ve ever been to was Primus at the Eugene Oregon Hilton ballroom. They were opening for Rush the next night in Portland. 300 sweaty people bouncing to That bass for 90 min. The air was definitely getting slippery 👊🏽⚡️
Last month I was in a Zoom masterclass with this drummer, Tim "Herb" Alexander. I actually played along with him as he showed us this drum part and talked about his thought process. It was a cool experience. Primus is definitely a genre of their own, fusing elements of funk, metal, and even bluegrass. They are also one of the few bands where much of the music is written with bass as the primary instrument and guitar mostly just adding flavor. That's because Les Claypool is a weirdo and a genius, which lends to him doing things on a bass guitar that no one else could fathom. Their songs may not be mainstream chart-toppers, but they are definitely top-notch musicians. When I saw them live, the performance is just as tight as the recorded version.
Everybody talks about Les but we all know Tim and Ler are as good at what they do as he is.That band is so tight it almost makes you feel like your heart skips a beat every once in a while when you crank them up😂
Primus opened for Rush in 1992 . Fantastic show. Primus did an entire show in the past few years doing a tribute to Rush covering the Farewell to Kings Album.
Such a tight band. Les Claypool backed by Larry LaLonde on guitar and Tim Herb Alexander on drums. Love their Sailing The Seas Of Cheese album. Claypool also played with Buckethead and Bernie Worrell RIP
I recently discovered y'all's channel a few weeks ago, and y'all are definitley the best reacting channel out on YT, I binged your entire Slipknot Saturdays to get your input on all of their songs while I was also starting to get into Primus, this is great
Morning guys! You gotta do " too many puppies" by Primus. I love that bass!!!! 🤓👍 I love that song! That's a funny and dark video! Hahaha! Love it!! (Ernest kills a dude hahaha!!)❤😂
So good to see y'all doing more Primus, I love that funk and quirky beats ... I also have mad respect for any band that can sing about suicide respectfully, their song Bob does that, great reaction all around🤘🖤😎
Primus is a deep rabbit hole that has many side tunnels that Les has dug along the way. One of my favorites in these side projects is Oysterhead (Les Claypool, Stuart Copland and Trey Anastasio) that's one of many. Les has said Geddy Lee was a major influence and Primus's last tour was basically covering A Farewell to Kings, not A song off of it, but the whole album. Les spent some time with Geddy to make sure he was doing it justice, and Lee said in 2022: "On Friday night we had the joyful experience of reuniting with our grand pals from Primus ...," Lee wrote. "We sat side stage as they immaculately worked through a cool selection of classic tunes which brought back fond memories of our touring together back in the early ’90s and then we were treated to the weird and wonderful experience of watching them perform our music: A Farewell to Kings in it’s entirety. Totally nailed it! They did us proud and we thank them deeply for the tribute and the lasting friendship." Beyond Rush and Primus' professional relationship as touring partners, Lee and Claypool have been longtime pals, sharing their mutual love of fishing, wine and bass guitar whenever they're able. Claypool himself considers Rush one of his earliest and most crucial musical influences; one of his first-ever concerts was Rush on its Farewell to Kings tour.
Primus probably wouldn’t exist without Rush. Tbh I think they’re both the greatest at what they do best. Les is the master of slap and pop and Geddy is the master of, well pretty much every other style. He used to play classical in the early days of Rush and switched to flamenco in the 2000s.
The image of spittle he wipes from his bottom lip after saying "My name is Mud" has stuck with me all these years and probably will stay with me for life lol idk why but that's how it be sometimes 😅🤌🏼🤘🏼
Primus was in the 'Battle of the Bands' segment of Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey.. if you happen to be a fan of those movies. Their song 'Tommy the Cat' was their feature in the scene.
Claypool has cited Larry Graham, Chris Squire, Tony Levin, Roger Waters, Geddy Lee, Paul McCartney, Geezer Butler, Bootsy Collins, Stanley Clarke, John Paul Jones, and the Residents as his musical influences.
This will always be my favorite Primus song. It takes me back to the first time I saw them ,they did this and it blew me away. Les is so underrated as a player,he’s a genius! Another great one to check out is Mr Krinkle. I’m going to see them in May it’s Maynard’s 60th birthday bash. Primus,Perfect Circle and Puscifer. I think it’s safe to say it’s gonna be one hell of a concert! I love watching your reactions guys. I’ll always support good peeps doing great things. Hope your channel keeps rising 🫶🏼
Love Primus! Les Claypool is my favorite bassist. Good friends with Maynard too. And the slick dude that came into the spa was the guy that orders nachos at the beginning of Jerry was a race car driver vid
Primus is my favorite band and I am sooo excited you guys are doing more ❤ fave songs are The Last Superpower a.k.a. Rapscallion, Laquerhead, Fisticuffs, and Over the Falls. The list of awesome songs and videos just goes on ❤
Saw them open for Rush. Two bass gods. They are so fun to see in concert. I couldn't help but see the resemblance between Less and Smoke 😆 Funny trivia. Less tried out for Metallica, but they said no! Obviously, because of his style, but still funny.
Their first album Suck on This has no bad songs, and has some of his best bass lines, I went out and bought it on LP Highly recommend checking out anything off that album
This is one of my wife's favorite songs. She loves the beat and bassline. when I tried to tell her what it was about, She just put her fingers in her ears and said La La La La La.....😁😁😁
You asked about Les' influences. Not 100% but he did reveal that his first record he ever bought with his own $ was Amos Moses by Jerry Reed - which they did a pretty good cover of.
American Life is a great Primus song. They have newer material, post-hiatus from this millennium too - Last Salmon Man, Jilly's on Smack, and anything from the Desaturating Seven album, but you could start with the Seven. They also did an album of the music from the Willy Wonka movie.
I thought I was the only one who shouted along to the line "...so I kissed him upside the cranium with an aluminum baseball bat" until I saw them for the Pork Soda tour and the entire crowd shouted it too. Something was/is still wrong with all of us. :)😀

Lol....I do too. Even while driving.
My kids gave me a weird look the first time I shouted it while I was driving.
It's one of my favorite lyrics
I shout it as well while driving! My daughter thought/thinks Mom's a badass! 😂❤️🔥🤘
Les Claypool and the boys were huge in the late 80's and 90's. Nothing else like them. Always fun to watch people listen to them who don't know what they're in for.
A very original and highly underrated band in my opinion
Yes!!
Oh for sure love me some Primus and the next song could be George Michael my playlist is all over the place hahaha
@@AIGeneratedUser same haha
@@AIGeneratedUser We like what we like and that's the awesome thing about music. You actually get to choose.
I don't know about the underrated part. Maybe overlooked byt the mainstream, but they certainly had a legacy and knfluence in tons of bands
Les Claypool is a beast on the bass.
Yes he is.
Total beast!! Love it!!
Plays it like he invented it!
Bass Beast

Mark B from Blind Illusion is my good friend and they are still going strong here in the Bay
I fucking love Frizzle Fry
One of my all-time favorite songs. Primus is always well worth your time.
"Mr Krinkle" will rock you're pants off. You will want the video
My absolute favourite Primus song. I had the video clip on VHS for years.
Oh fuck I gotta watch that one now. I've seen it a hundred times but it'll always be awesome. #primussucks
Les was upset MTV only played the Mr. Krinkle video like six times ever. I would be too after all the work that must've went into that awesome one-long-take video.
Primus(originally called Primate) - Jerry Was a Racecar Driver, Mr.Krinkle, Shake Hands With Beef, Tommy The Cat, The Devil Went Down to Georgia,
Southbound Pachyderm too.
Everything they've done is worth a check out

Saw that Lalapalooza at Portland Meadows. So freaking good!
I'm not a big Primus fan, but they really do have some absolute bangers, like this!!
Check out Too Many Puppies. My personal favorite from Primus. One of their few songs that have real serious lyrics
I second this song choice
That's what I suggested too! Lol
Goated bass line in that song. Hard and chunky as fuck
Dr Samuel Mudd treated the leg John Wilkes Booth broke when he jumped out of the balcony. After that his reputation was ruined. “Your name is Mudd” came to mean you had a bad rep too.
I believe that's exactly where that came from so the dead dude in the video here had a bad reputation and they rubbed him out!
John Wilkes Booth was Abraham Lincoln's assassin.
Wow, I had no idea. Thanks.
Bat Masterson after a gun fight in Dodge City>>> Let's get the hell out of Dodge.
Per a very early interview, Les said he didn’t know how to play bass. But he did know how to play banjo, so he chose to play a bass guitar as a banjo, typically using the claw hammer technique. Hence the very fast runs and heavy slap sound
We had our words, a common spat
So i kissed him upside the cranium with that alluminium baseball bat, My name is mud!
The expression refers to Dr. Mudd, who treated John Wilkes Booth's broken leg. His name subsequently became an epithet.
The funnest show I’ve ever been to was Primus at the Eugene Oregon Hilton ballroom. They were opening for Rush the next night in Portland. 300 sweaty people bouncing to That bass for 90 min. The air was definitely getting slippery 👊🏽⚡️

Especially the live version at Bonnaroo 2011
Amazing bassline, love this song...

The old diamond back sturgeon is a must. It’s about fishing, Les’s favorite hobby. Also John the fisherman or Fish on.
My aunt insisted I look(ed) like Jennifer Connelly...I said looked because my hair is no longer dark brown, but natural silvery gray....
That’s a good one to be compared to.
At the risk of sounding like an internet creep, you sound sexy

"Earnest kills a dude." Good one. A band where the bass player is the star? Ever heard of Rush? Pink Floyd? King Crimson? The Police?
Gotta love Primus! My granddaughter was freaking out when I played tommy the cat and sang word for word.
I had a first date once at a primus concert and it was the weirdest date ever.
You won't regret a deeper dive into Primus

Also, Primus made an appearance in Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey in the Battle of the Bands sequence.

One of Claypools inspirations is The Residents...which also he have worked with.
bro does look like fishburne. holy shit.
Primus was phenomenally better than most bands of the era. Absolutely the alternative to alternative

Funny trivia. Less tried out for Metallica, but they said no! Obviously, because of his style, but still funny.
They said he was “too good” for the band 😂
This song is about a real ex-cop named Mudd who killed his friend.
So glad y'all got into Primus, I have yet to hear a single project or song that I don't like, they are frigging awesome

Go see them in concert. It’s bad ass. Jerry was a race car driver
Check out their Woodstock 94 My Name is Mud. Also ... Listen to Too Many Puppies or Laquerhead.

One of Les's big influences is Geddy Lee. Claypool is one of the worlds biggest RUSH fans.
Iconic shots of Les with his cowboy hat on the setting sun 👌
