B. Alex i have peers who spend so much money on a rolex or on a golf course or on a new road bike 🤣 then i tell them the price of my bag (because they ask) and they dont get it hahaha i guess because a bag is not an essential item for them 🤷♀️
I just made a similar comment. To many cars are “worth” it whereas a handbag is not and is a waste of money. I was told once by a male co-worker that my husband needed to tell me I had too many bags. This from someone with 30 yes 30 fishing rods!
Years ago I worked at a firm where the receptionist carried a different designer bag to work everyday, exclusively either Celine or Chanel. She is from a wealthy old-moneyed family, and she didn't need the job to survive. She just took a job so that she had something to do. At that time Celine luggage bag was in, and she had one in every color, every material and every size. One day she carried a Chanel classic flap in black lambskin with gold hardwares (she usually opted for more colorful bags), and she kept going around the office asking everyone whether that bag makes her look old. I knew for a fact that she wasn't showing off, and she was the sweetest person ever. HOWEVER, the hostility other women harbored towards her was UNBELIEVABLE! She kept getting bullied by other women (especially the office manager), who were above her pay grade but still could never afford to own a Chanel/Celine bag in their wildest dreams.
Wow that’s awful did she know they were talking about her or was she oblivious. If I was her I would look for a job elsewhere. It’s so bad how other women treat others
@@divine2297 it seemed to me that she was oblivious that these other women were jealous of her. She thought they were just mean people (which of course they were), but she didn’t make the connection why they targeted her. That firm had extremely high turn over rate with people come and go every month. But she had worked there her entire life and planned to retire there. I think she is one of those people who stay with one job and never leave. I know a few people like that. They are afraid of change and will stay put forever unless they are fired. But of course the boss would never fire her - where else can he find a receptionist who are always well-dressed with hair, makeup, and nails done meticulously everyday, and only asks for minimum wage?
@@ritatheviolinist thanks for letting me know. Before you even replied I assumed that she would be oblivious to the rude behaviour. Some people can’t even tell when others are jealous of them. Hopefully she moved on to a better job👏
This is kind of off-topic, but I really do think you could make more career-centric videos too. Like, work from home tips, networking tips for any industry, routine videos, organisational videos etc. I've mentioned before that your channel is quite inspirational for me personally (and a lot of other viewers) and you seem like a pretty good source for stuff like this. It's a little different from your standard videos I know, but these would be so much fun to watch!
Thank you for the feedback my friend! I’ll certainly plan a few ideas on this topic, they don’t tend to have many people watch them which is why I don’t do them so much (although they’re my faves to film!) xxx😘😘
Sophie Shohet | Fashion Beauty Lifestyle I love these videos of yours! I’m surprised how low the interest is, considering most of us need to work to fund our luxe purchases 😅
Sophie Shohet | Fashion Beauty Lifestyle - Just do one a month or every couple of months and take one for the team. Perhaps make it part of a series throughout the year, after all, you can’t need the money when you’ve got a Dior wallet in your River Island bag. 😉 😂
I'm a 43 y.o. male and I happened upon this vid. I buy my wife expensive bags, clothes, etc. I do it because she doesn't like shopping and she could easily afford to but just doesn't have the interest. However, she's always appreciated the fact that I do it. Her response from female colleagues has been mostly positive. She has ran into a few haters here and there though. People are going to feel how they feel and you can't stop your shine because of it. Shine on ladies!
I think your wife is lucky to have you as her loving & willing personal shopper. That sounds lovely! Unfortunately, the double standard often applies in this case, too. If a husband/boyfriend buys/selects the items, it’s far more accepted than if the woman buys them herself.
I agree with not wearing designer items to work. I made the mistake of wearing a Chanel bag to work once and my manager kept commenting on it and it made me feel very uncomfortable!
I made that mistake myself. The person told me her mother bought it for her. I wanted to buy them myself and was trying to figure out how I could afford it so It wasn't jealousy but curiosity. However it was not her job to help me figure it out, and I was out of line I see now.
I’ve always believed in dressing for the job I want not the job I have, so I will continue to drive my Lexus, wear my Rolex, Chanel bag, etc. I work in tech and everyone dresses casual but I feel better when I look professional and put together🙂
I also work on the tech industry and yes, the dressing standards are overwhelmingly casual. It even feels weird to put a blazer on, let alone any kind of fancy bag. Kinda unfortunate for people like us who are into luxury.
I find that any time I carry my LV Neverfull, I get snarky comments from coworkers like “oh she’s got a Louis bag, she’s rich” which is certainly not the case, and I do find it to be quite rude. Sometimes people will ask if it’s real (I’m assuming because they can tell I’m not wealthy by any means) and all of these comments used to really get under my skin, and would make me feel ashamed to own a designer bag. But now I really don’t care what anyone has to say about it. I’m the one who paid $1,500 for it, might as well get good use out of it and carry it wherever I want!
Marissa i used to feel ashamed for my mom to see my designer bags. I guess its because she comes from a humble background and she is not into luxury at all so it made me feel like i was showing off to her. I have a six figure salary and are generous with my mom helping her to pay for her home renovations, but whenever she asks how much my bag costs i feel ashamed to tell her because she disapproves spending so much on a bag.
Yinglin I totally understand where you’re coming from because my mother also comes from a very humble background, but she does enjoy a nice Michael Kors or Coach handbag, nothing too pricey lol. When I got my first LV, I had purchased it in Washington DC on a work trip. My mom picked me up from the airport and here I am holding this massive LV shopping bag. Her eyes got wide and she asked me how much I had paid for it, she made a guess of $400 LOL, I was too ashamed to tell her the truth at the time so I lied and said it was $500. I aspire to be like you one day, I’ve always dreamt of being successful enough to be able to give back to my family and help support them like they supported me for most of my life. What a wonderful feeling that must be!
pipnsunski I’m so sorry to hear that! It’s such a shame that your friends and family are so judgemental and make you feel like you can’t wear your designer purchases around them. I hope that you stand up for yourself and what makes you happy, and that one day they can all be more accepting of your love for luxury. ❤️
interesting dilemma's. In a way, it's a blessing to look like a princess. Better than going all out and having everyone think you're a thief or a hooker because you look poor, lol.
When I was fresh out of college, I was cautioned about wearing anything expensive -looking or flashy to job interviews by a friend who works in HR. She said that if an interviewer sees a young person sporting things that are obviously costly, some will make the assumption that you come from wealth and haven’t had to work for anything in your life, which may affect a prospective hire’s work ethic. Obviously it could mean the exact opposite and that maybe the interviewee has a much higher work ethic and the wherewithal to save for quality. Either way, I thought it was an interesting concept and figured I’d share. Always love your workwear related content, Sophie!
I can certainly agree with that Taylor - I think too, you never know what those around you are going through, such items can antagonise in my experience xx
Not sure that's an accurate conclusion. because most people want to hire rich kids. They figure they can get away with paying you less because you have money, you have a better education, you can handle yourself in social situations better, your health is better, all kinds of assumptions about how being a rich kid is superior.
It’s absolutely not an accurate conclusion. That’s why I included that the opposite can be true. One person may think that wealth means a something and their predecessor may have thought totally different. I’m sure we all know people who come from every walk of life, some intelligent and hardworking and some otherwise, regardless of their upbringing. The simple fact is, this is where Sophie’s point of wearing a more understated wardrobe in the workplace can be essential. It allows the individual to walk into a room and be polished but not have their outfit speak before they do, and I think that’s a good thing to always keep in mind when walking into a situation where you need to sell your competence.
Meeee!! I‘m still in university for my law degree and I‘m only in my second year 😢 but some day I‘m gonna own those louboutins and the Birkin Bag and I‘m gonna drive that nice ass car. Just speaking it into existence 🤞🏻
This is very common in north America for women not to show off. People really do judge "she really does not need the business" attitude. With men it is usually different, they are successful and this person will work hard for you. Double standards.
When I was a substitute teacher, I definitely modified how the dressed, etc. based on the school I was teaching in. You have to know who your audience is, if for no other reason than to not make them uncomfortable.
This is what the people who insist on wearing their expensive designer brands to work, don't get. I say do so and 'be yourself' at your own peril and your career. To get ahead at work, flash your skillset, do not flash your money or designer logos, especially if your boss or the boss's wife cannot afford that bag.
Jealous people are usually the one’s who always have some kind of snarky remark. Don’t let those people decide what you can and cannot wear or the bag you carry. You’ve worked hard for your coins and are deserving of lux pieces.
I wear my Chanel jumbo and Rolex on daily basis to work . I bought them from my hard earned money and according and I don’t care if others decide to judge me !!! Life is too short and i want to enjoy my beautiful items . I respect your point of view but I am in a stage in my life that” I don’t care if others don’t like it 🤷♀️
Agree, personally if I see somebody with an expensive item, my first thought is "I will try to work harder and save to achieve the same goal" not "She is a bitch for showing off" but everybody it's own mindset hun 🙃
when your office life can't be made miserable by envious people, then I wholeheartedly agree! Who gives a rats ass what others think. However, if you're low in hierarchy it can backfire. I'm lucky to work with luxury loving women, so we congratulate each other on nice things rather than gossip about it. I myself have gained a bit of a reputation in getting good deals in Second hand luxury and get asked advice often. Recently we made a money pool to help a colleague buy her first Celine. So it can really be a positive thing with the right people.
Mela P I am an Engineer and worked hard in my Life . I was never gifted any designer item . It is all my ( money , time , health , Stress ,...etc.). Others who give themselves the right to criticize me do other kind of luxury ( travel , hotels ,..etc) which I don’t do !! So they’d better keep silent and mind their own business 😁
People who are still building their carreer can’t afford to let other people hate on them because they wear designer brands. But, if you’re beyond that point I’d also give zero fucks :D
I was wearing a fur coat and carried a nice phone for my first interview and they assumed my parents were rich, and offered me a job because my motivation for work was not money but rather experience. So for me it was beneficial (Eastern Europe)
Please, do a work bag review. I agree with your perspective. I can see in a professional environment, how designer items, could lead to negative opinions.
Yes, I think too many designer’s stuffs and too luxurious stuffs would make ppl feel that you don’t care about your work, so to a large extent, impair your hard work.
I totally agree on the "down low" aspect of wearing expensive brands to work. It totally depends on where you are though. I worked for a long time in the Netherlands and honestly, even if you had a bag of 300 euro people would start looking at you funny. After working in Monaco for 2 years it totally changed my perspective. The luxury items here are so, so, so mundane that nobody really cares. People use their LVs as grocery bags, it's insane. Yet, for work, I still prefer "brandless" items. My Saint Laurent, sac de jour is a really good example, where you know it's pricy if you know the brand, but otherwise it doesn't scream luxury. And yet....people do judge, in a way.
@@petralea And in NYC -before COVID of course- LV is what most career women use as a work bag. Moreover, in my company at least, making any type of comment that even slightly suggests sexism or racism can get you in serious trouble with HR so comments on clothing are totally verboten.
This video really made me reflect on my experience. When I was working in retail (not even a corporate environment) I remember once I got out my Louboutin wallet to pay for something and my coworker commented "oh, she must secretly have money" and "she must be a sorostitute ("sorority/college girl" + "prostitute") which I'm sure she meant as a joke but it made me really uncomfortable. In reality, I spent weeks stalking the wallet and bought it secondhand for a fraction of the retail cost. It just proves that when you wear designer people judge without any context about who you are or what your life is like outside of work. I also agree with the other comments that there seems to be a double standard with men showing off their luxury items at work.
Yep! And they won’t be jealous because they themselves can afford luxury. Most of the bad reactions will be from those who can’t afford it but wish they could. I wore luxury all my career and it is expected to look ‘expensive’ especially when meeting with clients that are spending large sums of money. It ups the status of the company so it’s actually encouraged at my workplace lol
In my line of work (criminal law) it's the same. People expect you to wear a Cartier or Rolex or have a nice bag. It means you are doing better than average cause you can afford it. And they want a good lawyer, preferably the best.
That's a waste of money to buy things if you can't wear them to the place you spend 5/7 days a week in my opinion ! And personally I dress up more for work than on week end, especially that in a corporate environment you can wear expensive items without damaging them...
Exactly! I hope my future work environment will be filled with people who mind their own business and actually think better if you If you have nicer things because to shows you appreciate the finer things in life.
Yes!!! My friends are like I do not get dressed for work. I’m like well you’re there more than anywhere. I do get more glam with makeup on the weekends but I dress to the nines at work. Also I work harder when I look cute
I work in supply chain (very casual industry), in Shanghaj (women love their luxury bags and to show status here), i am a senior manager (so i could wear what i want lol) and my customer is a very famous european fast fashion brand (they wear very casually). I have the pleasure to wear jeans and sneakers daily. I try to choose a light grey or dark blue color jeans, then a simple tshirt with a blazer and a necklace paired with golden goose sneakers or ballerinas or a sezane lace blouse (more romantic style). It took me ages to find my style. For me comfort is first priority, quality of clothes is second and i keep everything neutral but a touch of romantic style. For bags, i never bring my LV or Chanel bags to work out of respect for my team members despite i could because im their manager. I prefer to take my Loewe puzzle, Celine micro belt bag daily and if i have a customer meeting and need to carry a laptop i would take my longchamp le pliage, celine ring bag or my senreve maestra. I have Birkin and Kelly and lots of Chanel in my collection, but that is for my private life, i dont need to show off to others my status or where i spend my money on. A new daily work bag im considering is a Fendi peekaboo essentially size because it has no logo ☺️ I loooove handbags 🤷♀️
I agree with you about designer and its proper place in my life. I have expensive rings and watches that stay home for work but are always on the rest of the time. Bags are the same. I always consider where I'm going and who i'll be with when I dress.
I've noticed myself avoiding clearly branded designer pieces in a similar way, and I do wonder if this in part due to the sexist standards by which women expected to make others feel comfortable. There's an interesting (and well documented!) phenomenon where women have been found to use exclamation points and 'sorry' in email correspondence with colleagues much more frequently than men, particularly for women in positions of leadership or management. Although women are 'allowed' to achieve higher positions in corporate environment, there's still an underlying 'discomfort' that women are implicitly trying to placate in their male colleagues.
I remember wearing my dior slides on a dress down day in the office. I bought that slides with a fellow colleague who was into lux stuff as well. The day when I wore it, nobody knew or didn’t comment about it (so it made me feel comfortable), but the day when my colleague wore hers, she went around showing it off and telling people how much it cost and if that’s not bad enough, she even announced to the whole office that I bought the same bloody slides. Like FFS, nobody bloody asked her! 🤦🏻♀️. Boy was I pissed and I have not worn any lux items to work ever since 😶. Lesson learnt 🙈.
You're so right, Sophie! I work in the creative industry, so many of my coworkers and other studios wear casual clothing such as graphic tees, shorts, etc. I like to dress up a bit more formal like wearing a simple blouse or even slacks. I've always felt weird doing so because no one else does it. I can only imagine how weird I'd feel if I were to carry a designer handbag into work! Sadly it's only something I can enjoy outside of work.
Hello Vanessa! Oh yes I agree, I could wear a hoodie into some of the agencies (if I was t seeing clients that day) and it’s be absolutely normal! Thank you for watching and commenting my friend xx
@@SophieShohetOfficial Yeah I totally know what you mean! I think the only time we dress up is when we have a client do a walk through of the studio. Thank you for replying, Sophie!! (sounds like an email lol). I can't wait for the next video! take care xx
I don’t understand, you won’t take designer bags to work because it could be off putting to some, but everyone at your work can watch these videos so it’s no secret you own all this stuff.
Same. I never wear anything with logos to work. I work in tech marketing in the Silicon Valley where actual billionaires wear the same white polo shirt, tan khakis and white trainers every day. I once wore a vintage Chanel bag to work and someone asked about it. Nope never again. For my work bag, I use a Mulberry Bayswater or a Bottega Veneta Roma bag . They are both subtle and non-flashy and have been duped by many high street brands. So even if a colleague was aware of these "luxury" brands, they might assume they are the dupes. Which is fine with me.
I lived there and agree, but I saw a few woman tech business owners in Vogue, etc, in designer clothes. I never met any of them in person and I was stunned, but happily so.
This reminds me of my bf when he wears an expensive watch. If others ask “is that a real...” he will tell them it is fake just to avoid jealous looks and people treating you differently.
A couple of years ago their were articles published about how some interviewers even take note of womens engagement and wedding rings. Because depending on the size of the rock you could not be considered for the position because you look better off. And that has stuck with me, I completely understand why you feel the need to not use your branded luxury items at work.
I couldn’t agree more. There’s a time and a place to be in designer from head to toe and work is definitely a no no. It tends to rub people the wrong way at work. I’ve had colleagues comment on LV bags or Louboutins but yet they will spend their pay check partying. People are quick to judge and jealous for no reasons it’s better to stay low key for sure!
I get what you are saying but I feel like if you can't wear them to work then you are spending a lot of money to basically wear them shopping, or the occasional dinner out. It's a lot of money for so little wear imo.
Completely agree ! Like who is really going to fancy dinner or appropriate places ? Nobody, never. I will feel 5000x more inconfortable in shops were you can pass by "more poor person" than at the office were you know the position (and the income) of the person
I agree with you as well. I work so many hours each week, if I didn't wear my designer clothes and bags i would not get cost per wear out of them. It cost too much not to wear the items.
I agree! My designer bags are sitting in closet! But I am 100% sure, it I would show up in designer at workplace, I could kiss goodbye andy future promotions and would become subject of nasty chats behind my back.
Well, in terms of cost per wear I don’t think it’s too bad to wear it only on weekends., let’s say you buy a $5000 bag, and you wear it every weekend. 52 weeks in a year, that’s 104 weekends (probably can wear more during vacation or holiday season). So let’s make it easy and say 100 days of the year. Wear it for 5 years and that’s $10 per wear. In the long run, I think you’re getting your money’s worth ✌🏼
There are people who wear well tailored clothing and they look 100 times better then people wearing designer garments. If something is I'll fitted it looks bad no matter what industry you work in.
I work in a really casual setting (which bothers me because no one in my office dresses like an adult). But what we've sometimes done is "Fancy Fridays" instead of "Casual Fridays" where we'll dress nicely and more "corporate" (isn't that funny?). By the way, those merlot satin joggers/trousers look like a million bucks!
@@sams3015 That's so funny. When I dress "smartly" or wear cute boots I get so many little comments of "oooo! You look fancy today. Going anywhere later?" and you're like "um, no. It's just a Tuesday". 🙃
Haha yes! I once went for an interview and when I introduced myself at reception to say I was here for my interview with Mr Blah-de-blah, she laughed and remarked, “Yes, we can tell.” That was my first job in a long time after being home with children and I was honestly shocked at how casually people dressed for the office. Sadly, Casual Friday often looks no different to the rest of the week.
Working from home i also put my purse next to me as if I’m actually wearing it out. I dress up for video calls as well because I give presentations. I’ve decided that I’m wearing my stuff because who knows when normal will be.
It made me feel uncomfortable in the beginning with the snarky remarks, it wasn’t a designer bag but Zara suits or blouses and the high heels..... then I decided to bring my LV Neverfull to work😩...after a while I was like 🤘🏾 get over yourselves it’s my money, I wear what I want.... but never took my Chanel bAg to work....
It’s true what they say ‘when you look good you feel good’, even dressing up a little smarter for working from home has brought up my mood. It’s the small things!
The start cracked me up Sophie. I’m doing interviews atm and it’s so weird at like 2pm throwing on a suit for like an hour and then going back into my normal clothes to make dinner. I would prefer to be out for the day and going to the interview, somehow it doesn’t feel as ridiculous dressing up for an interview in person, it puts you in the mood but at home it just feels odd. It’s tempting to wear jeans or something underneath but I know my luck, I’d get caught out.
Oh wow, now you mention it I can imagine that must be so weird!! These strange times are mind boggling!xx P.s. regards the temptation to wear a casual lower half - I thought of doing that but knowing my luck I’ll need to stand up on the vid call to get something 😂
Sophie Shohet | Fashion Beauty Lifestyle Yeah it’s very strange, but luckily we have modern tech. Imagine working or doing interviews in the pre-internet era with corona 😮 Also, forgot your day you do raise good points about how working at home is more efficient in so many ways.
Kind of fun too however, if you enjoy dressing up. And I like that when i go back to jeans I have on makeup, and don't look like total junk, just nice in jeans.
You are so right! This happens to me all the time. Anytime I use my designer items (handbags, wallets, belts, jewelry etc) I don’t know why but it just rubs my coworkers the wrong way and they judge me!
Personally, I wear what I want wherever I want. It’s my money, my belongings that I paid for, my life. If people have that low self-esteem and can’t show respect to others by keeping their opinions I didn’t ask for to themselves, then why care what they think. People just need to worry about themselves and leave others alone. No disrespect, but if you’re buying designer items, show yourself some respect and wear them proudly. If you are too self-conscious about what other people think or say about the stuff you worked hard for then maybe designer isn’t really your thing. 🤷🏼♀️
I often "preview" myself on the laptop camera. This is helpful for checking lighting, adjusting angles, and seeing what others will see before its too late to move the laundry bag out of the background !!
Totally understand what you mean. In my company, there is a stigma against my department where they think that we earn alot more than the other departments. It doesn't help that we wear from Michael Kors to Gucci bags. I only have a CK bag because I lost my bags in a flood but the looks from co-workers is very intimidating. The real reason is that we have a lot of young women in our dept that don't have a lot of personal expenses like rent, mortgage, husbands or children and choose to spend their money on themselves (rightfully so). Me on the other hand have allllll three lol.
LOVE this video and your take on the topic, especially how none of the items you're showing are brand new. It's true: quality pays off. Thank you as always for sharing!
i see what you're saying but nah. i spend like 50+ hours a week at work. if i don't wear my designer stuff, i will never get to enjoy it. i work hard for my stuff, i don't have much (literally two bags), i save up for it and if someone has a problem with it i just turn it back on them and ask what types of things they save up for lol.
Hahaha I’m feeling this. I spend basically all my time at work or with colleagues after work, so if I didn’t wear some of my clothes to work, they would never see the light of the day :)))
I would never wear any sort of Logo to an Interview. Because it's distracting from my personality and qualifications. Luxury is ok when it's not in your face. However, in Switzerland LV is pretty "normalized", like the Noe Bucket is everywhere. No one bats an eye if you show up with one. But since it's very casual looking, I'll not wear it with a suit anyway. And using my lux bags or not depends on the people in the office and their attitude. I work in a consulting environment and everyone in my team appreciates nice things. We just recently made a money pool for a colleagues birthday, so she could go and buy her first Celine bag. But as long as I'm not sure if people will get the wrong idea of me as a person, I'd use bags that are not obviously lux until I get a feeling of the surroundings.
Hey Sophie, I love this video and the styling tips you're sharing here! ❤️ I especially agree on the "luxury items at work"-part. I'm from Switzerland and to be fair, I don't think that wearing luxury items at work always makes you look better.. People here can be quite judgemental, depending on where in Switzerland you are. In the big cities, I would agree that some luxury items can make you look like you're doing well, but it is more of the overall picture you are giving off. First impressions and looking put together in a professional work environment are extremely important here. A luxury item that was placed smartly in the overall look can really tie things together and make you look like you're doing well, since you can afford such expensive items on top of managing everything else (otherwise you wouldn't look so put together). However, when it comes to smaller jobs or jobs outside of that area, luxury items can make you be perceived as a stuck up or spoiled person.. People love to stare when you carry a shopping bag from a luxury brand, for instance haha. Either way, I really loved this video!! Love your content ❤️
I live also in Switzerland, and I disagree on the fact we can see luxury at every corner and that it seems so normal here compare to France where everybody is so judgemental, I don't feel the same way as you do :) Also I wanted to buy a Neverfull to go to work because it is the biggest tote bag I found and that I love, I don't plan to use it as a "show off" item but just because of it is practical, now I feel unsure but if I buy a bag it's to use it as much as I can and I go to work most part of my week obviously 😅
I love my Celine mini luggage for work. It's so structured and subtle and makes me feel like a powerhouse, plus it's not highly recognized by people who don't know luxe, whereas a monogram print is really distinctive. I also love vintage Chloe....or I guess a common theme here would be Phoebe Philo...and for me, it's not about the price or being doused in logos. It's about a certain amount of elegance.
Wonderful tips! I am with you on the designer things at work. I’ve had a similar experience where a manager was like ‘oh you’re obviously doing well for yourself’ because of the car I have or the scarf I wore. Even if the item I wear was a gift from someone, in the U.K it gives the impression that you’re somehow showing off and the mentality is that you won’t *need* a payrise rather than you deserve one. Which in itself is really sad - getting a promotion is so much more than just the money, it’s a personal achievement and it brings you further towards your goals- being denied that opportunity just because you happen to have a designer scarf or luxury wallet is unfair but alas, it is the mentality of *some* companies. I’d say keep your style, but shop around for work. I wear my bags whenever I go into London and I’m not working so they have an outing! 💞
Hi Sophie! I remember your video on this topic pre-COVID. I like that you updated it in a Work From Home context. I am self-employed in both healthcare and real estate. Like you, I do like to look put together and smart (blouse, trousers, long sleeves etc) without looking too corporate. While I don't face any threats to promotions (i.e. I'm self-employed), there are certain situations where I don't want to wear obvious and overt designer items (i.e. when seeing tenants etc). In my health care discipline, I dress professional, yet comfortable in clothes I can move around in. I do carry my handbags in, but they are usually out of site from patients as they are kept in a secure room. Most people in the office don't recognize my handbags....yet. I'll wear small accessories such as earrings or shoes that are designer. So usually wearing luxury to work isn't such a problem for me. I find that most patients, colleagues, and tenants will recognize a nice car before anything. I did drive a rather flashy car before and that sometimes made the situation awkward. People would also recognize me by the car I was driving as well when I was outside of work. I now drive a generic car and feel so liberated (lol). One barrier to wearing luxury, for me, is in front of certain relatives who may be jealous. I purposely leave my bags and luxury accessories at home when I see those people in particular. Sometimes I keep a pair of regular shoes in the car in case I ever need to change into them when I go see them. Have you ever had a situation where colleagues (or people who you don't necessarily want to have seen these items) have found your luxury youtube channel? I recently started a channel myself after years of contemplating it. What was holding me back was the possibility that those very people will find my channel and see all my luxury items lol. Oh, and I commented on one of your videos - the Chanel sneakers you were mentioning are back this season in black, white and a light grey.
Great video. This is great advice for young girls off to work with their first job. My daughter got her first job upon graduating, last year. She is a soft engineer. At first she was dressed up very nicely, she is a NYC kid, but now she just dress in whatever. Someone, told her she did not need to dress up so much because everyone wears sweats with hoodies and jeans. Then, when she wore her fancy bags she gets asked 101 question (my things that I have given to her) So now, she uses a plain canvas bag from Land's End and dresses like in t-shirts(company given) and jeans. She said it's so time saving. Only, time she dresses up is when she is meeting anyone or have a presentation.
Really love this video. I took summer classes and one thing I spend doing is that I made sure to set like a temporary small office space where I don’t show anything except a white wall and keeping natural light because I think that showing a bit of our home interior is pretty much a sacred personal space and there are some people who can be a bit rude. Also, I think luxury handbag like Chanel, Gucci and so on...Should go for more a weekend day or after work since when people see someone wearing a designer brand they think they don’t need to pay them since they can afford designers.
I am in love with your outfits Sophie. I just want to mention that in my mid to late 20's I worked in women's retail clothing. One thing I would suggest to the women I helped shopped for is to take any new items you purchase and to make entire new outfits with them, and to take a picture of the outfit. Say you buy a new gorgeous silk navy blouse, when you get home take the blouse out and lay it on your bed. From there you can select jeans, blazers, heels or flats or boots, bags, scarves, and jewelry that you want to wear with that one blouse. Take pictures of the outfit combinations that you like. This ensures that when you forget to take an outfit out the night before or if you're in a rush one morning that you have outfits already selected. I've read on fashion forums that some people will try on new outfit combinations on their time off. Personally taking pictures works for me because I can see exactly what I like.
I started wearing a designer bag to the office but I started to feel uncomfortable! Love these career related videos, would love to see more working from home tips and how to progress etc 💕
It really depends though because like in Hong Kong anf Singapore where people can not afford to get car and or house, they have disposable income for bags. It’s very common for like execs or managers to carry expensive bags. But other countries, people will look and talk. I keep it low whenever I am because there’s no need for unnecessary attention. I don’t post about my Rolex on social media because I don’t see the point. It’s for me and me alone.
I really love your work related videos Sophie! I'd love to hear more about your experiences in the corporate world, when/how you decided to move on from a company, how your mindset has had to change as a business owner now rather than employee, how you manage finances as a business owner etc I know these types of vids don't get as many clicks as the luxury bags and cars (also enjoy those videos!) but definitely love hearing about your work experience :)
i have opposite opinion. I would totally use luxury item to work. they are just meant to be used or worn. I don't understand why would women judge other people based on that. Maybe each office has their own vibe and culture.
I agree Sophie with not chosing designer bags with a hefty price for work, especially for beginners. It certainly affects how the employers and colleagues look upon us.
hahah this was such a fun video!! learned a lot - I like your range of topics from luxe, to home to work, to travel, to cars EVERYTHING. MY fave work outfit was the suit with smart trainers - this is deffo my kind of vibe!! Loving your blouse throughout too (with the bow) xxxx
I totally got what you're saying about not wearing your designer bags to work. My office is fairly small so it's best to look presentable but not flashy
@@Samantha2209 , I don't feel so alone anymore! People always look down for liking the things Sophie shows. I'm a Materials Engineer, what is your field?
I’ve become such a big fan of Sophie! I think definitely in my own experience that people tend to treat u a certain way if u r carrying a designer product. Although it is none of their business how u spend your money. But I think their attention can become negative and from then on they associate that product with you.
Hi Sophie, shocking how the senior colleague wouldn’t leave you alone re: Dior wallet for SO LONG! 🙄 Do you catch any clients or contractors looking you up on social media to gauge how well you’re doing financially? And using that to negotiate against you. Since your social media presence is huge and shows luxe bags and cars, I’m interested to know how you manage this. I’d love to have more of a social media presence but it worries me that even displaying a bit of logo on my clothes gives ammo for colleagues to use against me.
Mariana Valdez gotta think several steps ahead in this world 😔 some people project their insecurities onto the rest of us, and it can cause some serious grief if we have to work with them!
I think is really kind and well considered to do not be "in face of people" with our wealth, that is kind and respectful of others who could not have the same wealth level. 💕Sophie, you are a Star!
I agree in principle about people thinking "you don't need any more money," and people being put off, but honestly, if you're not going to wear luxe to work, why buy it? Frankly, I don't personally really go anywhere else except work and the supermarket (I mean, these days, I don't go anywhere at all, but I'm talking pre-Covid) but even if I were someone who went out on the weekends, still we're talking about paying thousands of dollars for items that you can then only wear at most 2 days out of 7? And is that even real? Are there actually people who, when they finally get to the weekend and have the freedom to stay home, would WILLINGLY leave their house on both Saturday AND Sunday? That has to be uncommon. So, realistically, we're talking about 1 day out of every 7 (only 14% of the time) to actually use the items you've invested so much of your wardrobe budget in. It doesn't seem worth it to me.
I do agree with you on work attire. By not wearing in-your-face designer items you do avoid many unecessary headaches and everybody is happy. So I would do the same. On the other hand, if you are working in the fashion industry the story is completly different. In the end, I would say , it all comes down to your work environment, so one has to be aware of the social codes that apply to that specific situation. Be smart about it :)
I wear my Rolex, Cartier and nice shoes to work. I bought a black YSL sac de jour with GH. Love the understated look. I believe you should wear anything you want. I want a work environment wear I fit in with the bags etc. Other wise (I feel like) buying nice things, are pointless. When I apply for a job, I try to find a company that fits my look. My clothes are also formal. I do believe you ‘can’t’ take any bag to work, but still. Do what YOU want. 💁🏼♀️
and yes I had a similar experience as well when it was time for promotion.. my manager and also co-worker kept saying to me "you don't need the money as much as someone else" which is unfair because I do work harder than everybody else!
From my experiences, I DEFINITELY concur with the notion of not wearing luxury to work. I was actually at an interview, I built a bit of report with the interviewer. She loosened up and we shared laughs. Kid you not, the moment she saw my bag, she became incredibly cold and of course I never heard back, lol. Needless to say, I never did it again.
I'm 26 and work in a law firm in Switzerland and all of my co-workers are 35+. I buy the things because I like them. I don't need designer clothes when I'm old and everything is hanging on my body. I want to enjoy them when I'm hot and young. I wear my rolex, all my luxury bags and jewelry. Of course they make comments, but I make comments back ;) Most of them are jealous as they need to spend their money for their 3 children and unemployed husbands. Ignore them and enjoy your life as it is too short!!
That’s so true, my car broke down and I took my dads BMW M5 to work and people were like, she’s got a big BMW why is she working here and started to bully me it’s horrible.
I agree. At my job, the most senior person in my division has been wearing the same Neverfull for many, many years. I wouldn't wear anything more expensive or luxurious than my boss' boss.
I have burn out during the Covid crisis so now I am at home in sick leave. Still I cannot use any luxury thing at work last year there were a fuss because I was having a Michael Kors bag... Anyway thanks Sophie for the tips related to videos I am looking foro jobs and many interviews now are on video :) I will use all of them :)
In my previous corporate job we had no dress code but the settings of the place, dynamics, building utilities and all made it feel like you were in a playground or a bar with your friends, I was always feeling like I was way too dress up, even just wearing heels or a blazer was already odd over there. Luckily now I work on my own projects and can drees as I like, thank you for all the inspiration!
That's why understated bags like a black YSL Sac De Jour (wearing it with the logo on the inside) is a smart idea. People have their inherent biases and will judge you for having expensive things, especially if you're a woman. I've heard people talking about how some women just work to buy nice things and don't really care about the job itself - like earning money for the purpose of earning money to spend it on material things. Great work clothing brands: - Reiss - Karen Millen - Saba (if you live in Australia) - Lily Silk (for professional silk blouses) - Aldo (for shoes) - Aspinal or Oroton bags (work totes) Potentially boring but it pays to tone it down not to give people the opportunity to make assumptions about you, your appearance or motivation.
My mom has always said don't wear luxe to work - it rubs people the wrong way for some reason. I compromise by wearing a bag with teensy logos (eg Chanel Reissue) but I think after the pandemic I will buy a quality bag that isn't designer specifically to wear to work.
Nona K I like to navigate around questions like that by saying: ”Thanks for asking,” then... ”I prefer to keep that information to myself, ” ”I'm really a private person. I'm not able to discuss this.” ”That's a very personal question... So how's the rest of your day/week look?” Something along those lines. If the person persists, I say: ”I value my privacy. I don't discuss my finances.” Then I smile and sit through any awkward silent very comfortably. Full stop. Politely maintaining discretion and healthy boundaries is a key skill to learn! I'm still learning. I'd love to hear phrases that work well for others.
@@MakeItSo_ST I usually use some avoiding tactics, but this time I was caught up in surprise, felt like being investigated. Very unpleasant, have to come up with a few lines for future.
I also work from home. Especially on hot summer days I wear light jersey dresses that are available in classic colors and patterns (e. g. polka dots or subtle floral patterns). So you are quickly dressed well, it is comfortable and you do not feel restricted. I would never sit at my desk in my pajamas ... The red trousers are really elegant. And I like your nail color today too. I believe that working from home will continue to prevail even after the Corona period. It simply has many advantages.
Don’t ever wear designers to work because you may get rejected for a raise since you don’t really need it due to your designer items. Just purchase Tory Burch bags for work, Zara clothing and Zara and Aldo shoes 😝
Mela P - yes but companies are always trying to find ways to save money. Unless you’re the CEO do not wear designer items at work nor show them off on social media.
I was just given a camera for my workstation last week for video call meetings. Thanks for the tips. Since I cannot move my computer, I will clean the bulletin board at the back of my chair in my office as soon as I get back to work. Of course now I have to bring extra comb and set of makeup kit to leave in my office for last minute call meetings too...omggg Thanks again
I commented this in another video but I just wanted to say how I wear my Louis Vuitton items to my job everyday (different items for different days/outfits) and I always have a variety of co workers making comments about it such as "Where do YOU work? You must have a second job? A rich boyfriend? Must be nice". The fact of the matter is I work my booty off and if I have a bit more money to spend on whatever items then that is my prerogative. The purse or accessories I use on any given day depends on my outfit and the activities for the day. To be honest, I'm at work a lot more than I am anywhere else and would much rather use my bags than have them sitting in my house not being used to for the sake of some jealous co workers. Thanks for the video!! xx
My husband and I own a computer sales/repair shop, so I do carry my luxe bags (small town, no employees outside of our sons) to work. That said, I sometimes feel awkward carrying my LV bags to school functions. Again, small town (farm country), not any other women carrying luxe. I do occasionally get sarcastic comments and/or *looks* from other women. I chalk it up to jealousy, but it still makes me feel weird.
I completely agree with you about wearing luxury items to work, I learned this the hard way. When I started my first office job I was making very little money but always loved fashion and high end bags, I saved up for months and bought a LV Damier Ebene bucket bag (which I still have & love). I used it every day and was completely oblivious to what anyone could have thought; I'm a "live and let live" type of person. One day, when talking to the head of Admin, he mentioned that several MALE administrative colleagues were getting raises, I asked "why am I not getting a raise?" He literally said to me: "why, so you can go out and get a handbag?" I could not believe it, it was a horrible job.
@@SophieShohetOfficial Thanks Sophie. It is amazing the double standard women are held to, if a man wears a nice suit/tie then it just means he's successful and therefore to be admired (but I won't rant).
Sophie, you are so smart not to wear luxury to work. Yes, it does rub some people the wrong way. There was a study that was published in the daily mail, people who wear designer things have less friends.
Hi Sophie, think ur spot on with ur personal guidelines about not wearing luxury 2 c Clients. It's savvy & smart & called "reading the room". Most likely one of the reasons ur successful as a Marketeer. The other thing is that when one wears luxury 2 c Clients, they'll feel they're paying 4 ur lifestyle & may subconsciously peg u as wasteful or extravagant (with their money). Why would anyone want 2 stir up those kind of feelings in a Client / potential Client?
I wear my lux bags regardless of the opinions of others. If they make judgements that is their problem. Also, I'm closer to retirement so I've peaked in terms of promotion aspirations so there you go!
I think it depends on the brand and the alluded exclusivity. A Chanel bag is polarizing for so many reasons, but I have carried a non-logo bag from Alexander Wang and Celine and no one blinks. On occasion, I wear non-logo Chanel and Dior clothes to work and again no one knows, they just say I look nice. Its when the GG belts, LV monograms, and highly recognizable items come out that it can be seen as a bit much. Either way, it shouldn't matter HOW we spend our money at work, instead what we do to earn it- meaning working hard for the people who employ us. I wonder if any men even think for a moment about this issue. Also wondering if you or your husband ever received comments about your cars? I love your channel and the spirit in which you share your life. Thank you for the welcome distraction. :)
I agree with your logic but also have to agree with some comments about the misogyny that goes on. Having said that: my father has always run his own law firm, and when he went to see clients he would carefully choose which car to use. should be a limousine, not a porsche (we are from Porsche-town), for instance. i brought an LV bag to work years ago and my female boss at the time said: oh your husband doesn't see any of your salary...(there is lots of cultural context to consider,, this is not in Germany...). anyways, I now use very understated Hermes bags and love it - no one knows but I still carry the luxe bags I want (wanted a Birkin but in the end, just couldn't do it - and if I can't take it work, i am not getting it - no point). I don't care if others are bothered, but I don't want to jeopardise my chances for salary increases.
why no one confronts the male worker with the expensive car but everyone confronts the woman with the Chanel bag... it's really ridiculous
B. Alex i have peers who spend so much money on a rolex or on a golf course or on a new road bike 🤣 then i tell them the price of my bag (because they ask) and they dont get it hahaha i guess because a bag is not an essential item for them 🤷♀️
Trust me, when a mailroom boy flashes Rolex he gets talked about A LOT too. Behind his back
I just made a similar comment. To many cars are “worth” it whereas a handbag is not and is a waste of money. I was told once by a male co-worker that my husband needed to tell me I had too many bags. This from someone with 30 yes 30 fishing rods!
I knooow I mean they're both things to be spent on so why the double standard lol
Amen!
Jealousy is a terrible emotion.
@@YouAdii it is!
I love that as well!
Yes, absolutely. We don't watch just for bags. I like Sophie's creativity. Creativity, originality and authenticity are all that matters I think.
Let's take a moment to appreciate how self-disciplined Sophie is to actually dress up and pack her bags to work in her home-office
That’s a lovely comment!
I agree with not wearing designer items to work. I made the mistake of wearing a Chanel bag to work once and my manager kept commenting on it and it made me feel very uncomfortable!
I felt the same! I chose to not wear it into the office in the end as I didn’t want it impacting my progression xxx
@@petralea hahaha very true! I am a lawyer as well and my secretary is always decked out in branded items.
I don't understand why people do that. Those green eyed monsters 😡
I made that mistake myself. The person told me her mother bought it for her. I wanted to buy them myself and was trying to figure out how I could afford it so It wasn't jealousy but curiosity. However it was not her job to help me figure it out, and I was out of line I see now.
For that same reason, I never wear designer bags to work.
I’ve always believed in dressing for the job I want not the job I have, so I will continue to drive my Lexus, wear my Rolex, Chanel bag, etc. I work in tech and everyone dresses casual but I feel better when I look professional and put together🙂
You gotta do you, ya know? Who cares what others think? Nice things are for yourself, not them!
ringoroll so true! Thank you😄
I also work on the tech industry and yes, the dressing standards are overwhelmingly casual. It even feels weird to put a blazer on, let alone any kind of fancy bag. Kinda unfortunate for people like us who are into luxury.
Skylark yess so true hun!
You do you, girl!! 🙌🏼❤️
pipnsunski Are these people your friends? Really?
interesting dilemma's.
Who else is obsessed with luxe but is broke 😭
I am on the same boat.

This is very common in north America for women not to show off. People really do judge "she really does not need the business" attitude. With men it is usually different, they are successful and this person will work hard for you. Double standards.
Hello Kimberly, can I ask more detail? Do you mean wearing luxury makes a man look more successful and therefore ppl will work hard for him? Thx
So true🤎👏🏾👏🏾
I wear my Chanel jumbo and Rolex on daily basis to work . I bought them from my hard earned money and according and I don’t care if others decide to judge me !!! Life is too short and i want to enjoy my beautiful items . I respect your point of view but I am in a stage in my life that” I don’t care if others don’t like it 🤷♀️
💯❗️
I can do!!xx

I appreciate your no nonsense approach to luxe and calling out designers for shoddy quality!
Same but she also has valid points!!!!
@@courtneyharris3722 same!! I feel more motivated when I feel well dressed!
That Dior blazer is to die for and looks stunning the way you’ve styled it low-key with the pearl lariat. Beautiful x
I agree with you about designer and its proper place in my life. I have expensive rings and watches that stay home for work but are always on the rest of the time. Bags are the same. I always consider where I'm going and who i'll be with when I dress.
I know what you mean! I think it can be a pretty smart move on our part, in terms of attitudes at work, as well as promotions etc xx
Sophie Shohet | Fashion Beauty Lifestyle and in personal life
I've noticed myself avoiding clearly branded designer pieces in a similar way, and I do wonder if this in part due to the sexist standards by which women expected to make others feel comfortable.
"Look like you're doing well, but not too well" usually works xo
I would rarely be able to wear my bags if I didn’t where them to work 🤷🏽♀️. However, I don’t where bags that are in your face luxury either.
My last job was in Denmark and was very casual, I came into work very dressed up and no one else was and a client mistaken me as the boss. 🤦🏼♂️
@@sams3015 That's so funny. When I dress "smartly" or wear cute boots I get so many little comments of "oooo! You look fancy today. Going anywhere later?" and you're like "um, no. It's just a Tuesday". 🙃
I can relate to what you’ve all said, and how when you dress-up everyone is like, “Ooohhhhhhhhh, look at you!!!!” 🤣🤣xx
The other day I had "Owww you look elegant, you put a blazer" hum yeah at the office it's quite an appropriate place for that 😭
Working from home i also put my purse next to me as if I’m actually wearing it out.
These strange times are mind boggling!xx
P.s. regards the temptation to wear a casual lower half - I thought of doing that but knowing my luck I’ll need to stand up on the vid call to get something 😂
Lulu Amen 🙏.! I don't care what other people think.! That's there problem no mine. I wear what I want whenever I want too.!!
Please please show us your 'Other Bags' I would love to see what you carry when your not using your designer bags. Please Sophie 💐💐💐💐💐💐
This is a great response!!!! I will use this in the future - thank you!
This is exactly how I feel babes!
I live also in Switzerland, and I disagree on the fact we can see luxury at every corner and that it seems so normal here compare to France where everybody is so judgemental, I don't feel the same way as you do :)
Also I wanted to buy a Neverfull to go to work because it is the biggest tote bag I found and that I love, I don't plan to use it as a "show off" item but just because of it is practical, now I feel unsure but if I buy a bag it's to use it as much as I can and I go to work most part of my week obviously 😅
In one of my early sales courses we were given a statement "people like people like themselves" Look smart but not too smart for your environment.
Exactly to all that. "Have more than you show, say less than you know"
I just passed all my exams in pj bottoms (yeh, digital exams). It becomes my "lucky" bottoms. :)
I really love your work related videos Sophie! I'd love to hear more about your experiences in the corporate world, when/how you decided to move on from a company, how your mindset has had to change as a business owner now rather than employee, how you manage finances as a business owner etc
I know these types of vids don't get as many clicks as the luxury bags and cars (also enjoy those videos!) but definitely love hearing about your work experience :)
From the philippines here. I love your channel direct, transparent and feels you can really apply in real life. Makes me happy and sane. Keep it up :)
i have opposite opinion.

Do you catch any clients or contractors looking you up on social media to gauge how well you’re doing financially? And using that to negotiate against you. Since your social media presence is huge and shows luxe bags and cars, I’m interested to know how you manage this.
I’d love to have more of a social media presence but it worries me that even displaying a bit of logo on my clothes gives ammo for colleagues to use against me.
Fiona K omg, this is a genius question
Mariana Valdez gotta think several steps ahead in this world 😔 some people project their insecurities onto the rest of us, and it can cause some serious grief if we have to work with them!
Fiona K so true. Also, I named my infant daughter Fiona. Beautiful name!
Fiona K True story.
Yes it’s unfortunate! Xx
Farah Atif Tell them it’s your boyfriends car.
Anyway thanks Sophie for the tips related to videos I am looking foro jobs and many interviews now are on video :)
I will use all of them :)
Great work clothing brands:
- Reiss
- Karen Millen
- Saba (if you live in Australia)
- Lily Silk (for professional silk blouses)
- Aldo (for shoes)
- Aspinal or Oroton bags (work totes)
Potentially boring but it pays to tone it down not to give people the opportunity to make assumptions about you, your appearance or motivation.
My mom has always said don't wear luxe to work - it rubs people the wrong way for some reason. I compromise by wearing a bag with teensy logos (eg Chanel Reissue) but I think after the pandemic I will buy a quality bag that isn't designer specifically to wear to work.
TBH Sophie, I agree, I don’t like to wear my expensive stuff to work. When I do, people are complimenting or just staring
I've have recently met with a girl who actually asked questions about every aspect of my finances 😬. I felt super awkward.
Oh no, that is awkward, I hope you managed to dodge the questions!xx
Same! She always questioned how I could afford stuff and if I got my nicer things on sale. Absolutely awkward and frustrating.
I agree with everything Nedega says. How about a joke? " Let's talk about religion or politics, something we'll surely agree on." Any other jokes?
I see your point, but isn't a raise supposed to be linked to your work quality rather than if you "need" the extra money?
Mela P yes it should be. But from my experience the reality is different :(
@@stridery that's terrible and would never fly in Switzerland...
Wow, this is awful. I’m so sorry. It shouldn’t be this way, you should be allowed to wear what you want without it causing you any grief xxx
Omg, I’m so shocked at that response.
@@SophieShohetOfficial Thanks Sophie. It is amazing the double standard women are held to, if a man wears a nice suit/tie then it just means he's successful and therefore to be admired (but I won't rant).
@ So was I, lol. I think I just stood there like a deer in the headlights as he walked away.
Love your work videos. We still have fewer business women than what we deserve. Great inspiration.
Thank you for sharing!Hope everybody here becomes successful on UA-cam
Sophie, you are so smart not to wear luxury to work. Yes, it does rub some people the wrong way. There was a study that was published in the daily mail, people who wear designer things have less friends.
Ive been wearing sock with sliders in my home office ahaha xxx
Thanks and have a great day everyone and remember to stay safe and positive ♡
You are lovely Nancy! You have a great day too my love!xx
I really love your smart classic style! Could you perhaps do a video on tips for how to dress smart for teenagers?
I find myself clicking more and more of your videos. You make entertaining, interesting, and relevant videos👍🏼 I'm inspired by your style.💗
Excellent ideas on WFH! Thanks. I also have had bad experiences of taking brand name bags to work, pretty frustrating!
