- Carmen Sandiego is back with a new animated series on Netflix! This video is my review of the first five episodes of the series, with no major spoilers given.
Starting off as a student at VILE academy, an organization that teaches people how to steal treasures from around the world, Carmen later turns her back on the place she grew up and does her best to return any goods they steal. Along with her friends Zack and Ivy, as well as her online friend Player, she becomes a thief who only steals from other thieves. But to law enforcement agencies like ACME, she is perceived as a criminal, and they try in vain to capture her. Carmen travels to many different countries during her adventures to stop VILE, and along the way ends up learning about who she truly is.
The Carmen Sandiego franchise debuted in 1985 with the educational video game, Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego?, and now has a total of 22 video games as well as three tv shows!
All of these entries had the goal of teaching children about geography and history. But just how does the new show compare? Watch the full video review to find out!

Cartoon Universe I saw the commercial for this and adored the art and action images. I am currently cautiously optimistic about it.
I think it looks amazing
Carmen was a hero turned villain in the older shows, this version shows us Carmen when she became a Heroine/legend. Perhaps later seasons will show us her fall/path to becoming Villainess, like defeating V.I.L.E and later taking their place. Maybe, maybe not who knows? But I look forward to watching/finding out.

One nice touch is the women she steals her Carmen Sandiego getup from is the old VA for Carmen Sandiego. A ceremonial passing of the hat as it were.
I saw that on social media and I thought that was such a nice easter egg!
I also love how the Chief of ACME looks just like she does on the old PBS game shows as played by live action actress Lynne Thigpen.
Did you also notice that the elevator music during the breakout was a muzak version of the 90s cartoon?

Having watched the first season of this, and as someone who's a fan of her previous animated incarnation, I really like this take on her. The fact they made her a hero character doesn't bother me at all. I would say Carmen was more of an "antagonist" than a villain in "WOEICS" anyway. That show also explored Carmen in her youth as well, though not to the extent that the Netflix series does. I love the character either way.
I also loved the little callbacks, and how they all come together. Though I'm not a fan of the new Zack, and Ivy's design. I liked the originals way better, but I won't say no to having them back again. And I was pleased to see characters from some of the games like Chase Devineaux, and Jules Argent.
Overall, I enjoyed it more than I was expecting to, and I'm very much looking to seeing more.

I agree. I was very skeptical about the new direction when I saw the trailers but after watching the whole season, I am interested to watch more. I also had the same issues with not liking the new designs for Zack and Ivy.

Actually, this one is another person taking the alias. Not the same Carmen, who is now getting older.
It could happen; she's really young here, like early 20s. Maybe later on, she would end up joining ACME in the fight against VILE, but ultimately double crosses them and become the latter's new supreme leader in the end.

Did it in season 1 within 2 days because I started last night. Not much seeing it as it only 8 episodes.
I understand why people complained about the change on carmen's origin, but this reboot does deserve a chance. I binge watched the show and most episodes are good. Some are great. My favorite is the Vermeer episode. The educational aspect makes you appreciate and understand art so you care enough about those paintings. Also, to see Vermeer's paintings transformed into the art style of the show was amazing.
Player is Carmen's version of Wade.
Akiran Drake ah, you see that, too. I was thinking the same thing that he’s just like Wade or Bentley the Turtle from Sly Cooper. Would that make the twins a composite of both Ron Stopable and The Murray?
Of course, Wade didn't invent the mission control style of character, either. It's been used in quite a few other places, such as with DC's Oracle.

I was very impressed with the first season of this show. It's really well done.
By the way, since they went ahead and made Carmen the main protagonist, I'm glad they also turned her into an anti-hero, as I hate villain protagonists. Of course, they could've simply kept her a villain antagonist, but the twist on the old mythos is still very interesting.

I think my main problem right now is that the premise of Carmen character sounds a little too similar to the recent She-Ra. A young woman, trained all her life by an evil organization, turns against them and ends up fighting her old friends while fixing the wrongs the organization has done as a way of finding herself as a heroine. Sounds familiar?
It’s more about what the show does with this premise than the actual premise itself. Listen to this premise: Young boy with superhuman powers is sent away from drying planet, and grows up to become its protector. You could use that to describe both Superman and Dragonball, but they are very different series.

That with the premise of the original shera so that plotline was straight from the 80s.
Thing is it works for Carmen while with Shera it kind of...doesnt the original shera wasnt like that so it's offish plus adora is still clumsy and seems untrained even after being raised in a military type style world all her life while carmen is still bad ass, this show handles the trope ALOT better
The show is amazing, I watched the whole 1st season straight in 1 go. When I saw it on netfilx, my first thought :" Hey my name is Carmen too!" And when they called her Carm, I was shocked cuz some friends of mine calls me that as well. Like What? I just found my new favourite Netflix show
I love how this show is still considered for all ages, yet they still sneak in that scene in the last episode where she LITERALLY ALMOST GETS HER SPINE SNAPPED, but yeah, this reboot it great- especially having grown up with the original!
I had to stop watching the show about 5 minutes into the "Duke" episode; Zack is an absolute complete idiot that goes so far beyond being simply comic relief, assuming that Carmen's team is supposed to be competent. I was actually quite liking the show up to that point, but that was it for me.
EDIT: I made myself sit through the rest of the episode, and it honestly wasn't that bad after the beginning. I still think the misstep Zack makes near the beginning of that episode is pretty ridiculous, but the rest of the episode is pretty good. Also, the rest of the season is VERY good and gets better with each episode. I'm very much looking forward to season 2.

The best episodes were the ones where Carmen worked alone tbh, let the episode with Paper Star
I remember the old series. I also really appreciate this newer angle. Yes, Carmen was a villain but even in the old versions, she had a sense of morality that forbid her from crossing truly devious lines. She was a thief but with real values, not just someone looking for a score. Similar to Catwoman. Point is, I do love this Anti Hero angle and really can't wait to see this on Netflix. *Toasts to powerful women*
It’s kind of becoming a trend with the reboot of animated 80s cartoons to de-age The main characters though I’m happy that in this new version they didn’t de-age The character to the point where she wasn’t an adult anymore like they did with She-Ra instead they de-aged Her to More or less college age
Adora is actually older in the remake. :^)
Original Adora was a teen. Both siblings were. The art showed a sexualized mid 30 to 40 something Barbie.

@@Anime10473 The animators used rotoscoping a lot for the original 80's cartoons so they were using actual actors for the character models. Also, both Noelle Stevenson and the original team for She-ra: Princess of Power said they were meant to be older than teenagers. I don't know where people got the idea they were 16 or something in the 80's cartoon. They must be mixing it up with the 2002 He-man. Yeah, it’s similar to She-Ra, with similar story, but aren’t most other shows/ movies been done before? Lol, seriously, I like stories like that. In the 90s cartoon Carmen steals things but it’s not her style to intentionally harm, so she’s not evil, she is just a troll for the lolz. It’s good to see Zach and Ivy again.
Really dont like that she's an anti-thief hero. Would have really preferred just keeping her as a smart thief whose antagonists are actually the 'good guys'
I have to agree. And I feel like I've seen the "good guy who is misunderstood by the authorities" angle too many times for it to feel fresh. Still, I've been a fan since I played the old games on my school's Apple II, so I'll probably give it a watch anyway. At least I like the art design, and I'm glad there's still the educational content.. Maybe I'll be surprised, who knows?
I do think we have to consider though that this will be targeted towards children and so now a days they can't really have that on kids shows they need anti heroes that's how they get away with characters doing bad things now plus I don't think any show wants a mob of mothers knocking ok their door saying how a bad influence their show is for their kids

Tbh Carmen Sandiago is one of the few shows that is rewatchable, the characters are interesting, chase is damn hilarious (in most animation projects, characters who are meant to be humorous are not really hilarious), the visuals and the 2D animation are great (I ❤️ how they keep continuing the tradition of animation unlike we keep seeing the modern day animation on the mainstream). I hate how Netflix don’t keep giving us many good shows or films like this but appreciate what they did with this one.
Zack and Ivys accents are spot on for the area that they live in. Boston Massachusetts.
I really enjoy this show myself, especially the artwork! Personally I find the general animation a tad lack luster sometimes, but the actual art used for it all looks absolutely beautiful. The character designs and backgrounds and lighting all make it just pure eye candy haha.

I was definitely more of a fan of the PBS game show than the cartoon series back in the day, so I’m glad they made the ACME chief more like the first chief instead of that annoying disembodied head. The whole Netflix series has nice little throwbacks to the older versions while being more entertaining. Kinda wished it was a little more educational, but at least the villains are serious instead of cheesy. Can’t wait for season 2!
Yeah, the PBS game shows were my first exposure to the franchise, followed by some of the computer games, while I never saw the first cartoon series. I agree that it was excellent nod to the Chief in those shows.
I'd say the villains are still pretty cheesy (Mimebomb, anyone?) but without overdoing it, and some of them are genuinely menacing and very dangerous. I was kind of disappointed that they dropped most of the punny names, but at least we got a good laugh at them lampshading how silly they are.

I'm still warming up to Zack and Ivy too. When Zack first appeared I immediately thought, "Oh, boy, here's comic relief..." I'm beginning to like them but I definitely prefer Ivy more. I think they're decent characters and I hope they'll be expanded upon in season two.
I’ve seen all nine episodes and I love the reboot. I also liked the idea that they decided to make her sort of like Sly Cooper, an honorable thief that steals from other thieves. To honest, I’ll admit that I was surprised to see Carmen being a heroine instead of a villain like I grew up knowing her as. I’ll admit that I missed the reference of Zack and Ivy from the old Where on Earth is Carmen Sandiego? show. Plus this show has also made me miss the days when I was on top of the world in geography as a kid. :D
Have any of you here as a little kid watch Qubo and around nighttime see “Where In The World is Carmen Sandiego?” air? That was me. In my room that I share with my mom and cat, when was little, I remember watching the cartoon show on Qubo and I remember Doki too. Doki was kinda like Carmen Sandiego to me, but Doki was more, uh..cute..and silly. Qubo has it’s own website, and that’s where I saw most of my childhood shows! It’s pretty cool that Netflix has a new version of Carmen Sandiego. I think the old one is still airing on Qubo..😂👌
Show got dark on the last episode of season 1
Got darker on the last two episodes of Season 4.
I enjoyed it. It's the Sly Cooper cartoon we never got, with Her in the role of Sly, Player as Bently, and Zack and Ivy splitting Murray's role. I will always like the look of the 90s cartoon more than the flat shapes of this style, but I must admit, this one makes fantastic use of shadows to really set the mood of scenes, and otherwise tries it's darnedest to make you feel the tension with the music and atmosphere. Here's hoping for more globetrotting heists and get away.

I wish Crackle was still working for Vile and they would have a showdown in Australia. The first and second episodes were to mild.
If the history lesson aspect was played up a bit more I could easily see it on discovery kids, where I used to watch grossology and other cool and educational shows

I thought it was a great show and I want more episodes and I hope we explore more of this new Carmen story and to learn more about her former classmates.
Hey Cartoon Universe, everything you wanted there to be is actually in the show later on! The characters have true character, and yes, there even is an interactive part! There is a Carmen Sandiego interactive movie(where you get to make the choices) and even a “Where on google earth is Carmen Sandiego?” game, which won An award.
My thought on the carmen San Diego is that is was so amazing i loved it i finished it in a day am not gonna spoil anything am just gonna say it is amazing
I actually only watched the trailer yesterday, and I've found myself excited for it ever since. Much like She-ra, I have the privilege of having not seen/played the original, so I have nothing to unfairly compare the reboot to and can so enjoy these things based on what they are on their own and not some expectation for it to be exactly the same as the original. Reboots are supposed to be a NEW AN DIFFERENT take on something old, and I think a lot of people forget that. Yeah, she's an antihero in this one instead of a flat-out villain. And...so what? Having her be the exact same character as her older versions would be boring, and it probably wouldn't be all that appropriate for a kid's show either. If y'all wanna see Carmen as a villain, go play or watch the old stuff. if you're actually interested in seeing a fresh and different take on the old stuff, come and be excited with me!
Also, I hope the theme show is better than She-ra's.

This show isn't supposed to be the same thing as the original. The whole thing isn't a video game, it's an original take. Wanting it to be like the old show, and saying it would be better if it was. Is a sort of nostalgia blindness, and isn't giving this original take justice. Also they did an interactive special.

As the series goal is not straight up educational, the series’s natural aim is to flesh out the most interesting aspect of the world, the crimson clad thief heroin herself. And I believe that the show gains a lot for it. As the older show has visually aged quite a bit.
Maybe this is actually all a prequel to the old series and games. Maybe Carmen becomes a real villain later, and this Zach and Ivey are really the parents of the Zach and Ivey we may be use to 🙂 🤷🏻♂️.
I'm going to miss the chase. I loved chasing after Carmen through detective work and knowledge.
You never talked about the amazing voice acting especially from Gina Rodriguez and Stranger Things Finn Wolfhard and I think it was awesome to know Carmen back story and making her a RobinHood type of character!!

I seen the netflix trailer and the theme song(recommended by UA-cam as usual :v), so I'm kinda hook by the art style of it.
Hi! I didn’t really play the video game, but I loved the animated tv series from the 1990’s.
Basically, there’s this organization of thieves called VILE and this organization that stops them called ACME. In the tv series Carmen Sandiego was a former ACME detective who got bored with stopping crime. Thus, she decided she’d start stealing and working with VILE. However, to make things more interesting Carmen leaves clues that tell those smart enough to solve them where she’ll strike next. Zach and Ivy are a brother-sister ACME detective duo who try to solve the clues and get a couple of steps ahead of Carmen to catch her. Through the course of the series, Carmen shows that while she does do bad things like mess around with time travel (she did that in one episode) and steal things, she won’t cross some lines. The lines she won’t cross include causing someone harm or using weapons against people. Thus, she was presented as an interesting enigma, not a hero, but not an evil villain either.

She is a femme fatale that steals and travels the world. Though as kid oriented I can’t recall her flirting or being seductive but always Implied. She is a sophisticated and intelligent thief that is bored easily. As stated she won’t harm people. Originally she was leader of Viile. She was a video game protagonist before her shows.

I feel like this series is missing something. You know that the original carmen sandiego game was about solving crime? That the protagonist is a rookie detective from acme? I think this series should’ve had a second protagonist, a male detective from acme who is as clever and charming as carmen. They could’ve had him hunting down Carmen and catching v.i.l.e members on the way and figure out where in the world is carmen sandiego.
I've noticed that Hanzo from overwatch is in this version of Carmen Sandiego, in a manner of speaking!
I gotta say, as the first animated series of 2019 that I’ve watched, It’s an incredibly strong start to the year, there’s so much to look forward to, and this was one I wasn’t planning on watching but I’m very glad I did. The animation is some of the best I’ve ever seen in an animated series, the plot is interesting and the characters seem to have arcs in place for future development, especially the Vile head villains.

I remember this game being available, but I never could figure out what to do or what it was about in the 15 minutes per week I had access to it. Especially with the other kids standing behind me and pushing random buttons.
Easily up there with She-ra in terms of good Netflix reboots. I love the direction of the show, having self-contained stories with educational facts sprinkled in without ruining the flow of the show while also having a bigger story.
I enjoyed the new series, I love all the easter eggs they threw in from past games/shows etc as it gives those of us who do know the games/shows a bit of a nostalgic trip down memory lane and I love how they placed the player in the show, they are still including 'us' indirectly which is what the game was all about. However, the whole villain turned hero etc bit is a bit too much like She-Ra but meh, whatever, that was really the only fault besides the randomness of how they placed the facts of the country, it seems like those two should already know the stuff (which obviously they do) but telling us, the viewer, those facts seemed badly told/placed but other than that I like seeing things from different points of view and this is just another telling of the story and can't wait till season 2

Thank you for this. :) I've been curious as to whether a tion take the time to watch it or not ends I think I will now. One thing to mention is that Carmen San Diego got really popular in the nineties when there was a game show about it. And it was a fun game show. If you can find episodes of the actual game show which precluded the cartoon, I highly recommend you watch them because they are very amusing.
it's pretty good. it was weird having carmen be the anti hero but my bigest problem is how mutch of a bafoon they made both zack and the french male investigaor.

Really wished they would have pushed the envelope just a little and let her be a villain-a nuanced one perhaps , but the show seems ok so far.
Finished watching it the other day. I like it. I can't wait to see more and I hope it gets better. And also I came up with a theory that ended up being true in one of the episodes.
When this series was announced, the Sly Cooper community got salty, as this show is basically the Sly series's plot, but with a female protagonist. The reason why they got salty over this, is because there was going to be a movie based on Sly Cooper back in 2016, but it got cancelled in favor of an up coming TV show about it that's going to probably launch this year, but there is no word or info about it to this day. Not to mention, last game for the series was released over 5 years ago, so when they saw this, they got salty.

Carmen is not only the female equivalent to Sly in this case, but she could be what Carmelita would be if the game was the other way around. Oh, the possibilities! Imagine Carmen flirting with Sly on a late night heist....and how HOT MAD Carmelita would be! You thought Sly was a thorn in her side? Carmen would be the whole sticker bush! Stealing treasures while trying to take her man!
My boyfriend loves Sly Cooper and replays they game every year, and he loves this show.
I thought it was pretty ok. I am still a little disappointed that Carmen is re-written as a "Robin Hood" type character, instead of a morally ambiguous master thief. I just missed stories about Villains. And I was really disappointed about about how much they got wrong about Polynesian culture. And it did stir up a bit of controversy for it.
basically all reboot shows take the grown up characters end make them to kids, cuz somehow the current generation cant relate to grown up characters.... i am 33 old.. back in the day we had no issues to dientify with heroic characters that wasnt kids..
So what issues do you have now identifying with younger characters? Why can't it go both ways?
@@REGdestRoy He's saying NONE. We had shows that had both. It clearly doesnt apply today. Similar to the current trend of young people not watching shows before the year 2000.
Which is weird because I grew up on shows like Johnny Quest, Flintstones, Scooby Doo. All shows made like 25 years before I was even born.
It was a good show. I watched all 9 episodes and kind of liked episode 9 because it answered some questions for me that I had since Episode 1. So if a show can keep me interested and amused until it's last episode then It's good in my book!
I actually loved it. Binged season 1 in three days.
Is there actual interactivity and trivia? Because that's what made the last one so good. It educated you as much as it was about chasing Carmen around with Zack and Ivy.

A lot of people don't like Zach and Ivy judging by the comments. It's funny to me cause I really liked them! Then again I didn't watch the old show. I only played some of the games, and I don't think they were in them. Plus I really like Boston accents. (Though I do wish they had more development) I guess if I had any issue with a character it'd be Gray. Only cause I find his facial expressions weird sometimes. Just looks off to me.

OH MAN! I remember playing those games as a kid in the computer lab!
Released in 1985...God I feel old. I remember when I thought this show was new. But at any rate...I was a fan of the original. First, i don't like the art style. I get no one wants to do hand drawn animation anymore, but Dragon Ball Super, Star vs. Forces of Evil, Gravity Falls, they all are done in digital animation programs but they look like someone actually took the time to animate the show. Carmen isn't as bad as it could get, but still not good. Also, WHY CAN'T THE WOMEN OF A MODERN NOT PURELY FOR ADULTS SHOW BE A BAD GUY (and even on the adult shows you never find them)!!! Come on, I was looking forward to Maleficent before it came out. I was looking forward to them making her a deeper villain and her begin the focus, then it turned it into a hate on the men, allegory for rape show. Frozen missed out on a huge opportunity (which ironically Wreck it Ralf 1 and 2 took and did well with), I just don't get it. Carmen was always the villain, and I think the show would work better with her being the villain. Okay, she may turn down the line,and their was a theory that she was actually a good guy even back then, but its like they can't do it. I was going to watch this until they made that change. I just think it cheats the character. I guess they figured anyone who still recalls the series is probably in the 30's and wouldn't care (which is probably more or less true) but still, why can't the female, even if she is the star, be a villain? They also make her too good. I get that Carmen was always ten steps ahead, but she was always so far ahead, she never had to fight anyone, and this show makes her into a martial arts master. Then not knowing who Carmen was (I don't think she was too familiar with her own past in the original show ether from what I recall) was a good thing. It made her mysterious and intriguing, but I get how they change the angle the show is seen from, so not a big deal. I don't know, the show probably does work, and it appears that it does, but I guess I am hung up on the changes to really like it. So its probably best this review is done by someone who is not truly familiar with the original cartoon.
I may see this when it drops later this week but these reboots are getting to me and it's nowhere near over with the Saint Seiya one coming this summer.
My mom made some sandwiches with that one fruit that smells horrible but tastes good. I didn't recognize it right away but then realized i heard about it from this show, so plus 1 for education in that case.

I'm always a little suspicious when an iconic villain gets turned into a hero. I remember when Maleficent came out. From what I heard about that movie, they not only made the title character a good person without giving her a new birth name but also made the fairies into incompetent buffoons and made the King into a mustache twirling villain. They didn't defy black and white morality, they just reversed the colors. Does the recent Carmen Sandiego series fall into that same trap?
It was so good and the last episode was made me so scared

I was so excited for this, thats my childhood right there, I had no idea they were making a reboot. Making Carmen a hero though? wow, no. She was a thief with a heart of gold, she stole, but she was never evil. Changing the fundamentals about her is not cool, there was nothing wrong with her original design. She was absolutely legendary, making her some sort of good person is unnecessary. She was strong and interesting and there were times when she saved the detectives lives if what they did was too risky. She rewarded hard work and cleverness; I don't know, I can't explain it well, but this was unnecessary.
Love the art style, especially of the main. But that's really all that draws me

there are a few things that could use some improvements. I wish the educational aspect was a lot smoother, at times it felt like it was kinda just forced in. And I would like to see a bit more about Carmen's old friends.
