@@randomdaydreamer9970 It’s even funnier when in some of the later episodes, Player has to go to an actual school instead of being homeschooled, and when Zack and Ivy provide a distraction that forces Player’s teacher to do a roll call, they believe that Player is his real name since that’s what they know him as, only to be reminded that Player would be a REALLY weird name for someone to actually have.
Carmen was never exactly evil in the 90's cartoon. She always saved Zack and Ivy and actually seemed to be upset when she thought they were going to get hurt. She even scolded what's his face when he betrayed the Acme agents and almost killed Zack and Ivy. She loved the thrill of the heist and the detectives getting hurt isn't exactly a part of that. It was always a game for her.
I actually really enjoy her new Barbie-like design. It gives her more room to use her head rather than brute force, because she can’t solve everything through physical means (although she does that too).
Despite her build in the old series, she always used her head first...the bouncer stuff was left to Eartha Brute, Otto "Gnash" Readmore and Top Grunge in the past.
@@felix_a_fiend I really prefer her classic red/gold look over the modern red/black, but I do like the idea here that her more common brunette or black hair is a wig under the fedora and that the auburn first given in 1985 Dossier is the true hair color (despite re-releases and updates making it seem like brunette is the real one...or black on three occasions.)
I was unsatisfied with the finale too. Things seemed to happen so quickly and then resolved just a quickly. Carmen being brainwashed and turned against her morals didn't seem like a high stake, even though it should have been; because of how quickly everything happened. They could have introduced that plot point a few episodes earlier, then elaborated on how Zack, Ivy, Player and ACME helps Carmen get back to her senses again. But other than that, i think the series was fantastic. Carmen was a kind of protagonist you don't often see in children's animated shows - smart, witty and cunning rather than the usual bubby, optimistic and blindly brave. Her character design didn't bother me much because she had to be flexible enough to do all the stuff she did, and not make much noise - something I'm not sure she'd be able to do if she was larger and more muscular. We still saw characters like Ivy, who had a more curvy body, and Chief Brunt who was definitely larger and more muscular, so it's definitely not the crew trying to yassify the women.
I have to agree. thought that's probably because the seasons became so ridiculously short. each season being 8 to 10 episodes and season 3 being a mear 5 episodes is crazy. I was shocked frankly. It felt worried about carmen getting brain washed but the moment I reminded myself this was the lasttwo episodes I was relaxed again. It was good, but it could have been so much better with more episodes.
If I remember correctly, the show was originally going to be 5 seasons, and, if so, Carmen likely would have remained brainwashed for much of season 5. I don't know when the last season was cut or why, but it would explain why they rushed that storyline so much. Personally would have loved a season all about her friends struggling to keep up with her and find a way to bring her back.
@@Lin-rh6qs And seasons 3 and 4 were actually just one season from a production standpoint, so we really only got 3 seasons instead of 5. Netflix likes to split seasons into two smaller seperate seasons sometimes so it releases content more regularly.
I only really had two real gripes with the series. One you brought up: that she doesn't inform ACME about VILE for an unknown reason. I think it could have been fixed in a satisfying way fairly simply, and not changed much, while adding interesting content. Unfortunately the second problem I have with the series is one that might not have been something they could have changed, and that is the length of some of the seasons and the series as a whole. I am disappointed that it isn't continuing and that we haven't had an announcement for a sequel series of some kind.
I think they could have done that first part well by building up the idea of a Carmen v. ACME narrative. Perhaps there was a time where Carmen and ACME did actually try to work together, but due to fundamental differences on how each party operates and Carmen's idea of using thievery, things simply didn't pan out. It'd be a great idea to use to also explore possible flaws in both Carmen and ACME, both of them being stubborn in believing that each of their own methods of fighting VILE are best. Carmen thinks that ACME are just a bunch of overtly-legalist glorified police officers who are too constrained by regulation and their own shortsightedness to see just how problematic VILE is, and ACME sees Carmen as a wannabe vigilante who commits the exact same crimes as VILE and does more harm than good. It'd make for a great story development to have this conflict come to a head in later seasons, as both Carmen's team and ACME have to put their differences aside to work together to stop VILE.
I think it was for two reasons. One of them is a spoiler sooo… One: The head director of ACME killed Carmen’s father so Carmen probably didn’t feel safe or obligated working with ACME. Or Two: The way Carmen works and the way ACME works clash a lot. Carmen probably would have felt restricted if she did any thing the “ACME” way. And ACME (while Chase and Julia did actually go along with her at times) probably would have gone against their own code if they followed Carmen’s lead.
@@redballoon9007 for the first one, Carmen didn't know that originally Hell she thought she was abandoned until VILE found her, for the second one Carmen is shown quite clearly to disagree with ACME's methods so I agree
I had a problem with the episode structure that for me tended to make me question the whole time 'is this girl actually good at thievery or not' and that is that at the start of each and every episode she will fail a heist or step of a heist get a clue from that then win in the final battle, this would be fine except for two points. One many of the times she failed are comparatively easier to pull off then the final heists and two that this pattern is so constant that it will give up key points that could be used to better the story in order to stick to the pattern. But on the whole it was well written I just wish they could keep Carmen's ability constant rather then the formula
@@michellekeppler982 I didn’t have this problem often actually- I know that Carmen wasn’t perfect and that she’d win in the end. It was a just the matter of how. Although the season three finale was when I liked the show the least. I feel like Carmen should have struggled more during the heist and her knowing about the trap the whole time was kinda unlikely.
That's why I fell in love with this show. I know I didn't watch the original series growing up since I wasn't even born yet, but this adaptation introduced me to the franchise in a big way. I've seen a lot of people give this show grief just because Carmen isn't a villain anymore. But as you said, this felt like the right direction. I enjoy the fact that Carmen has more of a character, with an engaging backstory. I also love the unique art style of the show. Something about it is so special and really pleasing to the eye. This became one of my absolute favorite shows, to be honest. I just wish it could have lasted longer but, it's totally fine! My only complaint is that the ending felt rushed and didn't feel all that satisfying. But overall, it was a great series. :)
At the time it would have brought itself a huge can of worms, if you mention Lupin in a story like this then you would have to reference Sherlock Holmes and the people who run the estate that has the Holmes license has a notorious history with over protection of the Holmes copyright thinking every story is protected by copyright when it isn't the case
@@SetoShadowVT They could also just reference Lupin since it’s completely independant from Holmes or use Leblanc’s ultimate parade against the Doyle estate when he was writing the LupinxHolmes crossover aka Herlock Sholmes.
I loved this series. My biggest complaint is the series finally because the scene with the Vile faculty being caught seemed to easy. All they really had to do was ask Carmen where they are and then just arrest them(She could have just told them from the beginning before they moved locations). There should have been more of a fight, the only one putting up a fight was Brunt and even she was taken down to easily(a net shouldn't have taken her down that easily).
I think Carmen didn't tell ACME about VILE in the first place is because she just didn't trust them ,probably thinking they will arrest her when she was no longer useful (+she knew Chase worked with ACME and given that he is so adamant about catching her ,maybe she assumed that the other agents are the same ).And VILE blew up the island before Carmen and ACME started working together.About the faculty's capture ,i agree it should've been mote interesting ,but if you think about it Brunt is the only faculty member that can actually fight and the only other members of VILE we saw were Tigress and Mimebomb (he is not much of a fighter)so probably they were the only ones on site ,like i agree it could've been better especially since we saw that VILE has plenty of goons ,but it is what it is
I'll admit the finale isn't perfect, but I want to appreciate what we got, rather than let what ifs spoil what I'd otherwise enjoy. Edit: Also, as a trans lesbian, I've no problems with Carmen's design. I often try to imitate her movements when the show is on my mind.
This series is so underrated. One of the only remakes of existing content I actually liked. I compare it to Kim Possible all the time, and low key actually think it's better. This series was exciting to watch even fillers. I adored almost every character (especially Julia) and Quote "La Femme Rouge/ Madam Rouge" in an angry French voice as often as possible. We deserve another season of this fine show. >.
@@pugpartyproductions9499 The first couple episodes were the weakest iirc, but it has a lot of charm and nostalgia, at least to me. Plus, it has Rita Moreno as Carmen and Jennifer Hale as Ivy in her breakout role!

honestly, this show started so great, and I loved every minute, but they were so shafted in the last two seasons with the rushed plot. I know there was the whole pandemic. I guess the critic in me would have rather waited until 2022 for the season 3 to even start. It had so much potential but got screwed in the end due to the pandemic. Oh well, I'm glad we still got what we did. I just feel we could have used this show as a massive launching point for a sizable franchise.
Speaking of her being a hero For some reason I want Carmen to meet Spider-Man on a visit to New York. I know I know, black cat but they’re wouldn’t be any romance between them just banter
I loved this show. And I’ll prob be rewatching it often. Only issue I had was how rushed it was in the finale. Taking down Vile should have been another season. However, Netflix is notorious for canceling shows early and it wouldn’t have surprised me if they informed them last minute that this would be the final season.
There’s a live action origin movie that apparently is still in production that was announced alongside the series. I’m not optimistic it’ll get as ballsy as your premise, but it would be cool to see.

3 years too late, but I've always viewed the remake as the kids of the older parts of the franchise. You even see it in one of the first episodes, the lady who's signature red outfit Modern Carmen steals, IS the leader of V.I.L.E herself, the og Carmen Sandiego. That's why the Sandiego name is inside the hat when new Carmen gives Player her name. She has no idea the moniker is already in use, and makes it her own. I've always figured it would be very interesting for the two to meet face to face one day, the Original and the New Kid.
Carmen Sandiego *was* a character in the 90's cartoon and not just a plot factor.. if you look carefully, she was pretty much shown as designed.. a thief hiding behind her heists.. she wasn't meant to be shown that often, but she was shown more than she should've been, considering her secretive personality.. the Netflix cartoon just takes it and flips it around.. i look forward to getting to it and about the "Barbie" look, it seems appropriate she should have that form, as she hasn't had time to work out.. if you think about it, this could be a prequel series
I thought the 2019 Carmen Sandiego Netflix was the original for a while until later I'm still new to the whole Carmen Sandiego but for some reason I feel a sense of nostalgia for certain parts of the theme song

It’s also because, in our current zeitgeist of “Eat the Rich, Burn Down the System” feelings about “criminals” and “the law”, it’s not hard for a character who’s villainy was only because she was a world class thief would be super sympathetic for the audience.
I especially love how the series ended - she'd gained so many allies across the world to "fight" for her cause that she'd become something more than a person. She became a symbol. So now, whenever someone asks, "Where in the world is Carmen Sandiego?" The answer is "Everywhere!"
never been familiar with the Live action TV show, Computer Game or a board game, because as a kid, I only ever got the animated series here in the UK. I enjoyed watching the new series when I discovered it (some years later). While certainly some of the narrative could have been written better, I did feel it was nice to bring all the 3 main characters from the original show back. It did feel a bit like the series could have been a prequel to the Original series given the way it ended. Apart from how in the original she doesn't know about her family heritage. That being said, there is certainly room in her future for her to become that villain again for what she sees as a greater just cause which acme might not be able to see. My only big disappointment with the new series is that it ended so soon and it would have been nice to know after 3 seasons what happened next.
Awesome video. Coincidentally, I recently played Carmen Sandiego: The Secret of the Stolen Drums on my PS2 and I simply LOVED playing that game. While Carmen is still more of an antagonist in that game, the fact that she continues to give clues to the main character makes me feel that Carmen has a bigger motive to these thefts than anyone could anticipate. While playing the game, I suspected more and more that Carmen was more than a superhero (or rather an anti-hero) than a criminal, suggesting that there is more to her than meets the eye. I also loved that art style in the game as well. It is quite fun actually and I highly recommend playing some time. Now, I have to admit that I have not seen the cartoon of Carmen Sandiego, as I did not like the animation style, but from what you said in the video, it might suggests that Carmen may have been a Hero from the get go rather than a villain. She is a great character and I hope we will hear about this character (rather via tv series, movie or video games) very soon...Fingers crossed...

Well I liked this change for this Netflix Carmen Sandiego. It was very interesting seeing Carmen actually being against the evil V.I.L.E organization this time around.
a neat twist they could have done is had this be carmen sandiego jr as in its the daughter of the old carmen who still runs vile but the daughter is trying to do the right thing! it also would explain why she cant get help from acme as they could be trying to use her to get at her mother
I don't think Carmen ever wasn't a hero. She's kinda like Spider-man or Green Hornet where the general public see her as a villain but she's actually just misunderstood.
She ripped pieces of a world-famous irreplaceable paintings to make a hideous amalgam for shits and giggles. I love 90s Carmen, I think the way she was characterized, while being simple, was very suave and intelligent, but the lady was very selfish and very much evil.
We went from a series where Carmen merely stole for fun and being the head of Vile to now going against Vile and being the hero. I can’t call this good but it is a weird interpretation of Carmen Sandiego. The series is in no way perfect but given its credit I am amazed that it was able to carry for four seasons as opposed to other Netflix shows that didn’t even get past one season or two. And I do agree with the other is that the ending was rushed and anticlimactic and did not really feel very satisfying considering the brainwashing Carmen has went through. Another issue I had is that she wins too much against Vile, like literally there is never been any episodes where a Vile actually scores a victory with her, until the end when she’s brainwashed but that’s not enough. She’s always way too successful in foiling their plans even if it seems like she failed. Like it literally could not hurt to have one episode where Vile wins and steal a historical artifact and she loses. But nope every time they do attempt it she’s always successful. If you’re having your heroes win all the time it just makes the series boring. And most of the characters in Carmen Sandiego was just flat and boring and did not have enough motivation so I did not root for Carmen in the series and taken down vile
Actually, there is a video called Carmen Sandiego: The Secret of the Stolen Drums for the PS2. While a bit old, especially since it is a PS2 game, the game is still quite fun. And it features EXACTLY the same platforming features you mentioned.
1:12 But isn't that like suggesting that because the book is titled "Where's Waldo," we should be seeing a bunch more Waldo? Or that we should be retitling Waitings for Godot and Guffman something else, as neither shows up? Like, the hook is exactly in the searching, the waiting, the unfindability of the titular character. Not that I'm not on board with making CSD an anti-hero. Just sayin', the title doesn't actually *need* to suggest that we be watching a story that *features* CSD - just that we're watching a story *centered* on her...or rather, the space where she should be.
I think the main reason why she doesnt let ACME in on it is because she believes its her own fight she has to do, which may explain why zack and ivy arent a direct part of the capers, but mainly just the people to get carmen out of there
here's the issue i have with "returning objects to the cultures" one of the only ways we can experience culture or at least some part of it is by visiting them in museums. They're significantly cheaper then flying to other countries and helps other cultures branch out and and spread. Yes, some of them are conquest spoils but that doesn't diminish the impact it had, and trying to "return" the artifacts would actually harm civilization as a whole.
absolutely not, there's nothing which can't be learned from a replica of a cultural object. If the original is genuinely gifted by a museum or caretakers in another country then therre is an argument for foreign museums keeping them, but the recent british museum scandal where thousands of artefacts were auctioned off from the basement in secret really details where this line of thinking falls apart.
I don't know much about the series as a whole, but watched the 90's cartoon a lot and frankly was most often on Carmen's side. There wasn't destruction of property, most of it was returned at the end (hopefully enough of the exceptions were pieces taken from rich peoples' collections), and if memory serves, it wasn't British Museum style either. Every piece of antiquity was fair game, rather than just those of indigenous populations. That all, and of course, it's a person doing what they want by ignoring what they are told to want, and not in the morally bankrupt sense. I haven't put it to words well here but hopefully my point still comes across. An amazing character doing amazing things for what I'd call worthwhile reason. Also Ivy and Zach turning sides was something I was waiting for in that show, so that's neat.
1. Carmen Sandiego even in the original computer games was never a Villain as she was always upset the the player could not get the item or her accomplice 2. Carmen Sandiego's vile seamed more like it was working with ACME Detective Agency to retrieve the items as Carmen would always leave clues to follow to find the good as fast as possible 3. Carmen Sandiego always seamed to want to teach the Gumshoes something or even show them something bigger on Earth or through time and space 4. every heist was central to some overarching plot that would point to something bigger that Carmen actually had no association with
@Highschoolgiril Agreed. If it did happen, I would hope that it convinces the people who don't care to watch animated shows to watch the Netflix version of the show instead though.
Me personally I grew up with the 90s Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego. And when this show came out on Netflix. I think that she’s somehow the granddaughter of Carmen Sandiego from the 90s cartoon. Because how would you explain the red hat and coat that she finds? Hmm… and the head of VILE is actually Carmen Sandiego herself. And the reason she created VILE was to find a successor who is truly worthy of continuing her work as Carmen Sandiego. She just might not have known that of the possible candidates at VILE the true Successor would be her granddaughter.
I think what should be mentioned for those who have not seen the show. Most of Carmen’s antagonist’s besides VILE assume she is apart of VILE which is a nice nod to Carmen’s legacy. The new narrative in a way give the old content some unwritten context, or at least allows it to be viewed in a new light. (SPOILER) Oh! And Zack and Ivy do become ACNE agents at the very end which also gives new context to old content.
Okay, I never watched the 2019 series. Haven’t had Netflix for years. But I played the original game tons of times as a kid, and watched the PBS game show and the original cartoon while growing up. IIRC, part of Carmen Sandiego’s backstory for the game was that she was a double-or-triple agent so many times over that she didn’t even know where her true allegiances lay.
@@powerofk they definitely nailed that part of her character in the show. Carmen literally has such a complicated backstory that you would never know what she would do without watching the show from her perspective. She cares much more about people and who they are than the badges or organizations they represent. It makes her show fascinating.
Carmen Sandiego never was a villain her intentions lied between Anti-Villain and Heroine. The games intend for her to set as the villain because of her criminal yet the original animated series would explore much more into character.

Lee Jordan...as in Hal's villainous cousin.
@@Superlad9494 well sure, she was always cool like that. Both of her designs are pretty fun :>
@@felix_a_fiend I really prefer her classic red/gold look over the modern red/black, but I do like the idea here that her more common brunette or black hair is a wig under the fedora and that the auburn first given in 1985 Dossier is the true hair color (despite re-releases and updates making it seem like brunette is the real one...or black on three occasions.)
it's maybe like they split '90s Carmen into 2 different characters... 2019 Carmen and Coach Brunt.

One of them is a spoiler sooo…
One: The head director of ACME killed Carmen’s father so Carmen probably didn’t feel safe or obligated working with ACME.
I’m so mad I never guessed what Player was supposed to represent
I'm surprised the show never made a reference to Maurice LeBlanc's gentleman burglar, Arsene Lupin
Whats that?
@@Katnip50 Are you talking about Arsene Lupin ?
We deserve another season of this fine show. >.
I never saw the original version, thus this made sense to me.
Agreed. I'm almost done watching the Netflix version of the show and I decided to watch the first episode of the original show. It was OK imo.
@@pugpartyproductions9499 The first couple episodes were the weakest iirc, but it has a lot of charm and nostalgia, at least to me. Plus, it has Rita Moreno as Carmen and Jennifer Hale as Ivy in her breakout role!
I LOVE this show so much. The only thing i'd change is the finale, as it needed a LOT more time. Unfortunately that's just how cartoons seem to be treated nowadays by the major companies that produce them. I can't remember the last time an amazing cartoon wasn't cut short.
MY Little Pony Friendship is Magic had a good fulfilling ending IMO
honestly, this show started so great, and I loved every minute, but they were so shafted in the last two seasons with the rushed plot.
Must admit, That one fight scene was slowly paced,And just a lot slower than the first fade in general
Speaking of her being a hero For some reason I want Carmen to meet Spider-Man on a visit to New York. I know I know, black cat but they’re wouldn’t be any romance between them just banter

5:40 what you mentioned there made me think that that version of Carmen is gonna have a field day in the British museum
In the 90s series she wasn’t evil or exactly a villain but she was still a criminal. She was more an antivillain than a villain in the sense of the people working for vile.
Am I the only one who binges the show?
I loved it
No, your are not, I do to.
People were gonna criticize it
But they genuinely made a great show
The twists and more make this more enjoyable to watch for both adults and kids
3 years too late, but I've always viewed the remake as the kids of the older parts of the franchise. You even see it in one of the first episodes, the lady who's signature red outfit Modern Carmen steals, IS the leader of V.I.L.E herself, the og Carmen Sandiego. That's why the Sandiego name is inside the hat when new Carmen gives Player her name. She has no idea the moniker is already in use, and makes it her own. I've always figured it would be very interesting for the two to meet face to face one day, the Original and the New Kid.
Wait that’s such a good theory
I absolutely love this show
Being a hero was part of Carmen's background. The desire to watch stories from those days helps making it work.
Carmen Sandiego *was* a character in the 90's cartoon and not just a plot factor.. if you look carefully, she was pretty much shown as designed.. a thief hiding behind her heists.. she wasn't meant to be shown that often, but she was shown more than she should've been, considering her secretive personality.. the Netflix cartoon just takes it and flips it around.. i look forward to getting to it
and about the "Barbie" look, it seems appropriate she should have that form, as she hasn't had time to work out.. if you think about it, this could be a prequel series
You don’t lose muscle when you work out 🤨
@@YllidTheLoonyDog i know.. i was saying that's how she could've looked earlier on, in the same timeline, but before "Where on Earth"

yooooo your videos are such high quilty manee you need more views
I think maybe my problem is that I keep making videos about anime cartoons and then flipping to western cartoons or video games or comics and vice versa, so that the subscribers I gain from one subject don't have any interest in any of the other stuff I cover- which is how I have over 13k subscribers but less than 1k views on the day my videos get published. Either that or youtube just doesn't put them in subscribers' feeds for whatever reason.
@@Lavapasta you deserve more subs my friend your content is great keep it up! I'm no expert in youtube so I don't know what to say to you but I'm sure that you'll get better over time.
I mean, it shows that cookie booker probably was the first, until carmen decided to rewrite it.
never been familiar with the Live action TV show, Computer Game or a board game, because as a kid, I only ever got the animated series here in the UK.
As a hard-core lover of the 90s Carmen, this was an alright show but I'll never fully accept it because I fell in love with that badass Carmen that stole for the love of it

I loved this series so much…
Like, even as a mature person (at least I hope I’m mature), it’s amazing. Amazing!
Ah...The Word Detective game...classic (and one of the few games that creeped me out as a kid).
a neat twist they could have done is had this be carmen sandiego jr as in its the daughter of the old carmen who still runs vile but the daughter is trying to do the right thing! it also would explain why she cant get help from acme as they could be trying to use her to get at her mother
So this is where Aoyama gosho got his inspiration for Kaitou Kid
Cool video
I didn't know Carmen Sandiego was a remake 😂
While i like the new design,
I can't see new Carmen steal the Statue of Liberty like the OG did
She should get a video game I honestly need more of her maybe something like sly cooper with platforming
Actually, there is a video called Carmen Sandiego: The Secret of the Stolen Drums for the PS2. While a bit old, especially since it is a PS2 game, the game is still quite fun. And it features EXACTLY the same platforming features you mentioned.
Well, if Netflix ever does Where’s Waldo, I hope he’s a Jason Bourne-type
1:12 But isn't that like suggesting that because the book is titled "Where's Waldo," we should be seeing a bunch more Waldo? Or that we should be retitling Waitings for Godot and Guffman something else, as neither shows up? Like, the hook is exactly in the searching, the waiting, the unfindability of the titular character.
Not that I'm not on board with making CSD an anti-hero. Just sayin', the title doesn't actually *need* to suggest that we be watching a story that *features* CSD - just that we're watching a story *centered* on her...or rather, the space where she should be.

NGL I thought this show would be nauseating but I loved it
I always liked the 90's cartoon
I think the main reason why she doesnt let ACME in on it is because she believes its her own fight she has to do, which may explain why zack and ivy arent a direct part of the capers, but mainly just the people to get carmen out of there
Was I the only one who cried during the finale?
I cried twice.
I honestly couldn’t agree with you more on the Netflix series
here's the issue i have with "returning objects to the cultures" one of the only ways we can experience culture or at least some part of it is by visiting them in museums.
1. Carmen Sandiego even in the original computer games was never a Villain as she was always upset the the player could not get the item or her accomplice
2. Carmen Sandiego's vile seamed more like it was working with ACME Detective Agency to retrieve the items as Carmen would always leave clues to follow to find the good as fast as possible
3. Carmen Sandiego always seamed to want to teach the Gumshoes something or even show them something bigger on Earth or through time and space
4. every heist was central to some overarching plot that would point to something bigger that Carmen actually had no association with
Oh now we can see her face finally geez took u long enough

Wait she was a villian?
Carmen Sandiego never was a villain her intentions lied between Anti-Villain and Heroine. The games intend for her to set as the villain because of her criminal yet the original animated series would explore much more into character.
