And it was Mal's distress when Book got shot that distressed her. River has a connection with Mal. We see it in things she does and says in a few scenes throughout the season and in the movie. They are subtle but definitely there

The theme of _Firefly_ is civilized values versus frontier values: frontier values are better. This episode compares two "families". Civilized values are represented by the privileged Tam family. The Tam parents are so afraid of the Alliance government that they can't even admit that their daughter is being held and tortured in a government lab, and abandon their son when he tries to help her. In contrast, frontier values are represented by the Serenity's crew, who are more a "family" than the Tams' blood family. Even though the Shepherd is just a passenger, Mal risks his ship to get medical help from the Alliance cruiser. Then, in contrast to the Tam parents, he goes back to rescue Simon and River, even though as wanted fugitives they are a danger to him.

I personally disagree with Whedon's judgement: I think civilized countries with modern governments are a lot better and more moral than the brutal cowboy values found on a lawless frontier.

There was a lot planned for this series .. One thing Joss has said more than once is that every character on the ship had a secret that was going to be revealed over the course of the shows run. I really only know a few of them.. but they all have at least one they are harboring..

Lovely reaction! I am amused by everyone (including myself sometimes) in the comments trying to correct Kazzy on Adam Baldwin's name, answer questions, and various other things - considering these reactions were filmed some time ago and posted on "Patreon only" - none of our comments will change anything she says during the rest of her reactions, because she's done the whole show already. But hey, they do help the algorithm!

"We need the little girl to speak". That wouldn't really help them. Wouldn't change their minds against Rivers abilities being from a witch. And part of the main guys reason is because she knows he killed the other guy. Little girl speaking isn't going to change that.

I really like you reactions but ... and it's just a suggestion but, you MIGHT enjoy the show even more if you stop reading the synopses BEFORE you watch the episode, because many of them are meant to get you to watch, but they are better if they are a surprise ... just sayin' ...
Jayne (Adam Baldwin, not Daniel) is NOT a member of the famous Baldwin family, which does include Alec, Daniel, William and Stephen. Also, as others have mentioned, Home is Serenity (the Firefly class/model ship) and Daddy is the head of their NOW family, meaning Mal. So, she is totally aware of things, but her words often have alternate meanings for those NOT in her head. After a while, you WILL learn to understand that she ALWAYS means what she says ... may not even understand them herself at the time, but she always means them.

They're breaking out into what is supposed to be Mandarin Chinese.... but... speaking as someone who's grown up hearing Chinese (Cantonese and Mandarin) ... their pronunciation is a bit ... off. They don't quite have the rhythm and tones correct -- at least, not for any modern Mandarin (who knows, a couple hundred years from now, pronunciations could have changed)

I love the scene when River quickly learned all the local dance steps and within minutes became the center of attention as she was innovating new dance moves.
"Daddy will come and take us home" Daddy = Mal, Home = Serenity.
The problem with the Tam's parents = They have been indoctrinated by Fascism. In their eyes, River is safe because the Alliance knows what is best for all of us. Everyone must follow the rules without question. No one wants black marks on their social records. Why Simon doesn't understand this is very frustrating to the Tam Parents.
*Priorities:* Mal gambled that Simon & River should be safe for a later rescue while he gets Shepherd Book some urgent medical help. We can speculate that Mal's military background taught him guerilla war tactics (like how to hide in the hills). The Hill Folk are good at evading the townsfolk = similar tactics. This factored into why Mal knew there wasn't enough time to search for Simon. Probably also why Mal was able to find Simon & River as quickly as he did.
River steals Jayne's dinner roll off his plate. She intentionally sat next to Jayne. Perhaps she intended "payback" because she knew Jayne had earlier stolen Simon's things.
Mal to Jayne about moving cattle: "They move just as easy if you lead them."
Jayne to Mal: "I like smackin' 'em."
This dialog exchange sums up how they lead a crew as well. It calls back to "The Train Job" when Jayne told Wash "Do you know what the rutten chain of command is? It's the chain I get to beat you with ... "

Careful now, cuz your annoyance with River & your wish for Simon to have a life of his own might just drive her off the ship to become just another object in space..😉 The good part of your anti-River bias is that you can't seem to put your finger on it. So she/her situation resonates with you albeit in a way that makes you feel uncomfortable. Sign of a strong movie/series character.
My guess would be that - for the moment - she may represent the loss of personal control due to neurological damage. She'll grow on you, same as Jayne will. And you/your views might evolve in the process as well. Cheers from Amsterdam!

@@seanmcmurphy4744It's pretty good. It's two seasons, and two tv movies. One movie after each season. You'll notice a ton of other actors and actresses that spend a lot of time also in the Whedon projects, like Dichen Lachmann and Envar Gjovaj from Agents of Shield, Amy Acker and Alexis Denisof from Angel and, Alan Tudyk, Summer Glau, to say nothing of Eliza Dushku. Adam Baldwin from Firefly worked with Whedon on several occasions and he said once that Whedon was tough and lost his temper when things did not go his way, but that Whedon did not even come close to Stanley Kubrick difficulty when Adam was Animal Mother in Full Metal Jacket. So, it seems to me Whedon is difficult to work with but remembers the actors that can handle his style.

River isn't delusional... she just sees things differently. At 12:20 when she refers to daddy and home she doesn't mean her elitist parents she means the ship, and Mal. If you were to write out everything she says and analyst it... well after the fact, there is very little she says that doesn't ring true once you factor in her view of things.
A lot that she says is cryptic in the moment, but can/will make sense given time and perspective. However the show didn't get "time" being cancelled so quickly, some of her actions... may have needed insight from a future that never came.

"Safe": Jayne loves smackin' the stock as they move into an improvised corral. The crew goes window shopping on Jiangyin, Simon continues to have foot-in-mouth disease, and River wanders off and finds a dance. The cattle sale goes South, which turns into a gun battle, Shepherd Book gets caught in the cross fire, and Simon is abducted by hill people. Mal takes off to find medical help for Book, and River finds Simon. At an Alliance cruiser, Book's ID magically opens the medical ER, the Tams try to fit in, but River reveals too many community secrets and is denounced as a Witch. Just as Simon is about to be roasted, Jayne "hangs out," and the Big Damn Heroes get "our witch" back, On "Serenity," Simon finds out where they stand with Mal. An out-of-season observation: Every time a UA-cam viewer falls in love with "Firefly," a Fox TV executive falls off the Nakatomi Plaza building.;)

Over 200 people were accused, of those, 54 confessed and 30 were found guilty. Nineteen were hanged. One person, Giles Corey, was pressed to death because he wouldn't enter a plea. If I remember right, another person died in prison awaiting trial, and at least one more after sentencing. The greatest tragedy isn't that 20+ people died, and many more lost everything they owned, including their standing in the community. The real tragedy is how easily this all happened and how fickle justice can be. Religious fervor, political instability, and economic disparity is a dangerous mix.

@@fullmoonprepping4024 I live in Salem. I've been to all the monuments and museums many times. I've attended countless lectures by historians who specialize in the Witch Trials. Hell, when I walk down to get a boba, I pass right by the Salem Witch Trials Memorial. Carved into the rock are the names, execution dates, and victims' protests of innocence. The events are incredibly well documented

Let's see... criteria for being a witch... Having knowledge (usually of science), being able to read in Latin (or read at all), being considered attractive (because that is how you put spells on people to make them desire you, since that is the only reason a man would ever think about being attracted to someone), having a strong will, or a will of any kind, really, having new ideas, and being possessed of intelligence that goes beyond the smartest male in the village. Did I miss anything besides weighing as much as a duck or turning someone into a newt (even if they get better)?

W hen the crew is speaking in a different language, they are speaking (sort of) in mandarin chinese. The actors pronunciation was not always accurate. It was Joss Whedon's way of bad language getting past the censors.

You asked if it was a made up language no it is not. It is real. It is mandarin Chinese. Basically in the world, the two most dominant languages spoken was English and Mandarin. So like anyone learning another language, one of the first things they learn is swearing. This is why you hear the characters most of the time when they’re swearing they’re doing it in Mandarin.

They ran out of time to get into Shepherd Book's mysterious past, so you can get a comic called Shepherd's Tale that tells about it.
River's perception is a bit strange. It's not total delusion because it's mixed with some precognition. But the way she describes it gets muddled through her mind, where the people or settings are changed in the way she describes it.
So you can see that in other episodes that she talks about things that are happening or about to, but in a way that makes people around her not recognize what she's referring to. And she herself may not even understand what she's picturing in her mind.

That is young Zac Efron playing Simon...and they are speaking Mandarin Chinese slang, which became a secondary main language of the show, particularly for swearing.

I wish the series would have had the chance to flesh out Jaynes character. You do get to learn why money is so important to Jayne later in the series but would have loved a chance for more character advancement

The scenes where Jayne is taking Simons stuff and then returning it were added because the running time was short so Joss Whedon had Adam Baldwin improvise those two scenes. They were quickly written an Adam very little time to learn them.
I also particularly like the scene between Simon and River when she is telling him she "gets confused" etc. It's one of the best scenes done with just the rwo of them.
Also the scene where Mal tells Simon "You're on my crew. Why are we still talking about this. Chows in ten...no need to dress." The smile that comes from Simon... great facial acting..which all of the actors show throughout the series and the movie is exceptional. Best cast and casting of pretty much anything ever done.
Am truly enjoying your reactions to this show;which I absolutely love.
    It will grow on you.
When you are done, go back and watch them with the commentary. It adds a whole new insight into the overall essence of the show.
Looking forward to the rest of your reactions.
    Peace...be safe.

Firefly is a type of vessel. Serenity is the specific name of this particular Firefly. The story is Joss named the series after the type of ship as opposed to the specific ship because he resented the influence the actors had in his other projects, i.e. Buffy/Angel. So he wanted everyone to know he was willing to blow up the whole ship and start over with a different ship and crew if he ever felt so inclined. Given what we now know about Joss and his "difficulties" in working with others I'd say the story makes sense. Tho ironically this series didn't last long enough for any problems to ever arise..

I believe at 2:18 *River* was just speaking gibberish. But the secondary language they often speak throughout the show in general is Mandarin.
*EDIT:* I've seen _"Dangerous Beauty"_ and quite enjoyed it as well. I don't recall witch stuff, but it has been a while. 🤷🏼‍♂️

Not gibberish. It's Mandarin. She called Mal a "stupid son of a drooling whore and a monkey". That's why Mal said that she'd added cussing to her repertoire.

When River says daddy coming. She is referring to Mal. She sees him as father. because he protects his crew his family. funnny thing is most people are annoyed by Jane not River. River is both childlike, which is really a defense mechanism against what the government did to her, she can also read minds and hasn't learned how to filter them out yet. She also possibly able to see into the future a few minutes. As you see as the show goes on and in the movie. The type of ship is a firefly. Its name is Serinity. Whis is the name of the valley in the earlier episode.
