Yeah it's a space Western, in a world where the dominant cultures spoke english and chinese. So it's a weird mix of old cowboy Western slang with mandarin words. I think. =)
I think you're right... though I know people here in north Texas who talk just about exactly like on this show, many of them very smart. It's more western than Mandarin, but that's definitely in there.
@@AndrewKendall71 The Mandarin is sprinkled in with slang. The rest of the speech patterns is modeled after different regions of the U.S. during the western expansion.
For the Magistrate's son, it wasn't loosing his virginity that made him a man, but the pep talk afterwards that encouraged him to stand up for himself that made him a man.
Really shows the difference between a Companion and a whore. The sex is entirely beside the point for Inara, it's about human connection and doing what she can to help someone grow to be a better person.
I've been in love with this series since it came out. As a Star wars geek and Star Trek fan, good story telling and character development always have me. My fondest memories are of my 2 teenagers with me watching this series after my wife passed...i watched them fall in love with the characters, we cried. Watching this with your reactions confirms my love for this series. Thank you.
This is a love story. The love is between Mal and Serenity...one-sided as it may be. Many a sailor over history consider their ship to be their lady, faithful and true.
These reactions are so special because you feel everything in this show like a true Browncoat does. Firefly grabs on to a little part of your soul and never lets go. Glad you've joined us here in the 'Verse!
Everyone who watches this show falls in love with it. Too bad most people have made up their mind about it. Thank you for watching (re-watching for us) it with us. I hope you watch the movie as well as that's a well deserved end and explains a bunch of the story points.
I never noticed until this reaction that there is a parallel between Inara saying she fell in love with Serenity at first sight and Mal's reaction when he first sees Serenity at the end of the episode. Made for each other!
And... *[SPOILERS]* ... ...the _"everyone dies alone"_ exchange between Mal and Inara... ...knowing what we later learned about Inara's situation and her reason for leaving her home planet Sihnon so suddenly - and then her beloved Serenity.
I liked the show before, but Out of Gas is when I began to LOVE it. Interesting behind the scenes story: When FOX cancelled the show, Joss Whedon decided he was going to try the next to impossible task of fighting for it, perhaps shopping it to another network. Alan Tudyk, who played Wash, took the call back button from the set and mounted it on a plaque. Underneath the button, an engraving said, "When your miracle comes... call us back." Whedon reportedly still has the button to this day.
I've gone back and forth over the years, but at the end of the day, Out of Gas is my favorite episode of the series. So well structured. So much depth of character work in the flashbacks. Glad you're enjoying the series as much as you clearly are.
This is definitely one of those special shows that has the perfect cast, amazing stories, some that are simple but really endear the characters to you, even Jayne. It really did deserve more.
The shuttles were not expected to reach anywhere, only to spread out for a better chance of being found. If Mal had left Serenity, she would be open salvage if someone found her with no one on-board. By staying behind, if either shuttle found help, or if someone found Serenity, there was the possibility of saving the ship, if not for the Captain, then for the crew.
Please make sure you watch the movie "Serenity" when you are finished with the TV series. It wraps up the story of these folk in a way the TV series never got to (though it was continued in the comics, something I don't think you can react to).
And it has Chewitel Echiafor as the villain. I first saw him in a little indie film called Dirty Pretty Things. A hell of a thriller film of Hitchcockian worth.
I meant unpopular as Cassie said. On UA-cam. She said it gets the least views. That's surprising to me. I know all about the network and timeslot issues and how it didn't develop a real fan base until it was off the air.
@@itdano I think the fans have made their own Jayne Cobb, Hero of Canton-type legend out of Firefly's cancellation: that it was a mega-hit waiting to happen, and the evil executives decided to try to lose money by producing episodes and then making sure nobody could watch them. 24:43 When the series was cancelled, Alan had claimed the Big Red Button. As Joss had sought options to continue the show, Alan sent the BRB with the message "When your miracle arrives, we will return."

It's an episode that's just SO shiny. So fitting to every character, to how the whole crew interacts - really well written and I agree, near perfect viewing experience!
I love how seriously you think about the episodes and their implications, after. What you may lack in genre-savviness (-not that you haven't already improved on that front, you have-) you absolutely make up for through your honest sympathy and care for the characters and their stories! The signal can't be stopped!;)
Watching your range of emotions, and how quickly they can change watching the show, brings back so many happy (and intense) memories of seeing this for the first time with my friends. Thank you for restoring some very heartwarming memories.
the smile on your face when you saw Serenity in the flashback at the end of "Out of Gas" says a lot about why people love this show and feel deeply about it. It's more than just a ship.
I felt the same way you do about Janestown when I first watched it, but as I rewatched a few times it started to grow on me more. So glad you're doing Firefly! This show holds a special place in the hearts of those that get through them all, as I'm sure you can see.
"Out of Gas" is my hands-down favorite episode of Firefly. Which is not in any way a knock on any of the other episodes; the show continues getting stronger from here, but OoG is just *so* good. And it's always so much fun watching someone fall in love with these characters and stories.
The language - Firefly, is at its heart a space western, and part of that flavour is the "Frontier" (common in the old American West) language used my Mal Reynolds and most of the English speaking crew. It sort of marks them as being "Educated" but not on a core world like Simon, River and Inara. Jayne also speaks with the same frontier pattern, but generally more cussin' involved. If it were a western, it splits their backgrounds from East Coast or West Coast. Checkout this scene from "Prospect" where Pedro Pascal plays a prospector, who just shot and killed this girls father and tracked her back to their disabled ship. ua-cam.com/video/r6yyuIkNy-k/v-deo.html. Also a masterful use of Frontier English to show the character and background differences between these two.
26:08 "He's poaching him." That flashback adds some depth to the scene in the pilot when Mal asks what will happen when the money is good enough to make Jayne turn.
When you started off reacting to Firefly, I left you the comment that, "Out of Gas," and, "Ariel," are my two favorite, back-to-back episodes. I wish they had been back-to-back for this episode of @popcorninbed, but it just means being here for the next one. You started today with, "Jaynestown," saying it was the weakest episode so far? "Out of Gas," makes up for it 10 fold! I really love how much you are enjoying the show and cannot wait for you to make it through to the movie, "Serenity."
I just love your reactions to Firefly! Its tragic there was only one season and one film! So many people would watch this show if more seasons were made!
One of my favorite things about Firefly (other than absolutely everything about Firefly) is how the characters go on to reference it in other things they do. Nathan Fillion consistently quotes or references Firefly in his other work! My husband and I are watching through Chuck right now and Adam Baldwin (Jayne) who basically plays a patriotic Jayne, quoted Firefly in an episode! We both got so girlishly excited we nearly fell out of the bed! 😍
You really need to just enjoy this and forget about anything that might distract you from just how perfect this show was. Since first watching this show I have never seen a series that had a better cast. These guys are magic together.
I just wanted to say I love your reactions, and Firefly is one of my favourtite shows, so I'm really glad your enjoying discovering it :D I am sorry if this isn't getting as many views as some of your other videos, but I want you to know I really appreaciate your uploads!
"I'm pointin' right at it" is a quote my wife uses on the regular with our kids and her students. "Out of Gas" is one of the best episodes of any show ever.
Not sure if you recognized it, but Jayne (Jane?) was in Independence Day. He was the military guy at Area 51 that shoots the soda can off the alien craft. He’s been in a lot of movies all the way back to the 80’s.
Love this episode. Has two plots that parallel perfectly both about stories that factually are not true but that people choose to tell themselves and hold onto that provide them with a basis for faith that helps them to go on through incredible hardships. Plus the Jane song is hilarious.
The one time Inara is just completely speechless. It's priceless. I subscribed to your patreon because you are doing this show, Cassie, so I hope you are seeing many new members from the browncoat community.
Yep, your patreons know you, even so much that they knew you would like the Rocky movies. I highly appreciate that you have a moderate mix between what brings lots of views and stuff you really like. Kaylee is my favourite character and when I first watched Firefly I had a huge crush on her (crush on Kaylee and admiration for the character of Zoe, Gina Torres plays badass characters most of the time). Jewel Staite (who plays Kaylee) is the reason I occasionally rewatch a couple of episodes from "Stargate: Atlantis" where she in later seasons becomes a regular.

Although it seems to cause people to gloss over one of my favorite lines: "I tore these out of your symbol and they turned into paper."
While Jaynestown may not have been your fav, the look on your face when they started singing the Jayne song is easily one of my favorite moments of all your reactions. Just an absolute delight.
And a few new words, gorram. Also new slang, shiney.
@@AndrewKendall71 The Mandarin is sprinkled in with slang. The rest of the speech patterns is modeled after different regions of the U.S. during the western expansion.
@@kevinjohnson613 Watch your Gorram language, please.
For the Magistrate's son, it wasn't loosing his virginity that made him a man, but the pep talk afterwards that encouraged him to stand up for himself that made him a man.
That's the standard post-1st time pep talk. Everyone gets that speech afterwards
@@iandor1381 They do?
I got gypped! 😆
@@iandor1381 All I got was "don't tell your parents, here's a fiver now go, you're late for algebra."
@@lordsummerisle87 It's in the subtext, man.
Really shows the difference between a Companion and a whore. The sex is entirely beside the point for Inara, it's about human connection and doing what she can to help someone grow to be a better person.
"If the snow on the roof is too heavy, the roof will cave in; his brains are in terrible danger" best sensible non-sensible line from River.
Love is what keeps her in the air.
Let's you know she's hurtin' before she keens...
@@singingwolf3929 Makes her a home
Hardly one-sided, though. Serenity has a love and appreciation for her captain as well, her and Zoe being one character and all
@@Helbore "...when she outta fall down"
The ending of Out of Gas will always make me tear up. Always. Sometimes things just fit.
Out of Gas is, without a doubt, my favorite episode of the series….which is saying a lot considering how good the show is overall.
"You don't have to die alone"
"...Everybody dies alone."
Might be my favorite exchange in the whole show.
I also liked the bit about "When you can't walk...".
"Sounds like Canada."
As a Canadian Browncoat who knew what was about to happen, I LOL'd. A lot.
Sorry.
"Oh my gosh! My legs just went numb!" (c.f. "I swallowed a bug" Serenity)
"Your shuttle smells funny."
"That's incense."
"So you SAY."
OMG THE JAYNE EPISODE
congratulations, the ballad of Jayne is gonna be stuck in your head forever
The man they called jayne
I've gone back and forth over the years, but at the end of the day, Out of Gas is my favorite episode of the series. So well structured. So much depth of character work in the flashbacks. Glad you're enjoying the series as much as you clearly are.
I would say that Out Of Gas is one of my 14 favorite episodes of the whole series.
These stories are deeper than most tv shows. Will always love it.
"You can't do this to my people!"
This line from the song has to be the funniest part of the entire series for me.
"and they're half-Texan or something" 😂 love you Cassie hahaha
Is Firefly actually unpopular? I watch every reaction I can find to this show.
The network didn't care about it and so it didn't get the time slot or promotion it deserved.
It's kind of like Shawshank in that it hugely underappreciated when it came out but gets more popular with each passing year.
The intensity of the fan base makes it seem bigger than it really is.
I have yet to see a reaction show where the person didn't become a Browncoat convert. This is from an original Browncoat.
'out of gas' is my all time favourite episode. Glad to see your loving the series.
Jaynestown is my favorite, let's sing The hero of Canton while we wait.
Episode 08 - Out of Gas : will always have a special place in my heart for this tv series. Especially because of the the ending.
24:43 When the series was cancelled, Alan had claimed the Big Red Button. As Joss had sought options to continue the show, Alan sent the BRB with the message "When your miracle arrives, we will return."
in 1 x 7 you notice when his expartner says "He dropped me out first" that Mal turns and looks at Jayne, like he is reassessing him.
i do a rewatch of this series about once a year, and right now i'm in the middle of one so when this video popped up in my subscriptions i said "okay no need to wait any longer, let's go ahead and binge all of cassie's reactions!" and so i have. man, this show really is one of the very best things ever. there won't ever be any more, but i'm fine with that, because what we got was so, so perfect. and oh my god, yes, no matter how many times i watch it, "out of gas" still guts me every time. so so so well done, every single moment.
Out Of Gas is probably my favorite episode of television ever. So glad you're doing this show and enjoying it. Can't wait for the next.
Out of Gas is probably my favourite episode of the entire show's run.
Absolutely the best episode of the tragically aborted season. Out of Gas is a damn near perfect piece of television.
Yep. It’s not my favorite episode, but it’s the definitely the best. Such a well made episode (and show).
Lol Wash's face when the whole bar starts singing never fails to make me giggle some
"Well......oh WELL", I love that moment, so naturally funny🤣
the smile on your face when you saw Serenity in the flashback at the end of "Out of Gas" says a lot about why people love this show and feel deeply about it. It's more than just a ship.
I felt the same way you do about Janestown when I first watched it, but as I rewatched a few times it started to grow on me more. So glad you're doing Firefly! This show holds a special place in the hearts of those that get through them all, as I'm sure you can see.
With firefly - The more we analyze an episode, the better it gets. There is so very much to say about Jaynestown.
I love the little pat Mal gives the engine before he starts it. This whole series is a compilation of little moments.
That was priceless! Jayne and Cassie had the same facial expression when "The Hero of Canton" was sung.
26:08 "He's poaching him." That flashback adds some depth to the scene in the pilot when Mal asks what will happen when the money is good enough to make Jayne turn.
Bummer the views are low on these reactions. I think the Firefly videos are the best ones on the channel!
Your reactions to Firefly are some of the highpoints of my week! Thanks for keeping up the quality content!
Despite these not getting the best numbers for you on UA-cam these are by far my favorite reactions you do
When you started off reacting to Firefly, I left you the comment that, "Out of Gas," and, "Ariel," are my two favorite, back-to-back episodes.
"This here's a spectacle may warrant a moment's consideration." Is among my favorite lines to insert into conversation.
You really need to just enjoy this and forget about anything that might distract you from just how perfect this show was. Since first watching this show I have never seen a series that had a better cast. These guys are magic together.
I have to agree, though I also think Buffy's cast, and Twin Peak's cast are absolute perfection.
@@juzujuzu4555 Don't forget The first season of Deadwood.
@@McShaganpronouncedShaegen I haven't seen that, but based on your comment I add that to my bucket list.
Having seen it I don't even know how many times, over all these years. Out Of Gas has always and will always make me emotional.
You say this doesn't gain you the same amount of views, which might be true... but your firefly reacts are the reason I found your channel ! : )
"There's just people like me" .. goddamn a real moment for Jayne. That look in his eye goes to show how good Adam Baldwin is as an actor.
Heartwarming reaction! I plan to try to rest / go back to sleep, but I saw this was uploaded and had to watch right away. ☺️
So glad you like Firefly. It's one of the best shows in tv history. Those who do not appreciate it doesn't know what they miss. Their loss.
"Good guy to good guy" you sweet summer child. I think I watch you simply because your heart is so pure.
Wash: “I want to go to the crappy town where I’m a hero!”
I just wanted to say I love your reactions, and Firefly is one of my favourtite shows, so I'm really glad your enjoying discovering it :D
I am sorry if this isn't getting as many views as some of your other videos, but I want you to know I really appreaciate your uploads!
Sorry you don't get as many views, this has been my favorite series of yours so far. Love it. Keeps me coming back.
Out of Gas really is my favorite episode of the whole series.
"I'm pointin' right at it" is a quote my wife uses on the regular with our kids and her students. "Out of Gas" is one of the best episodes of any show ever.
I love Book's description of faith, one of the best ever.
Not sure if you recognized it, but Jayne (Jane?) was in Independence Day. He was the military guy at Area 51 that shoots the soda can off the alien craft. He’s been in a lot of movies all the way back to the 80’s.
Out of Gas is hands-down my favorite episode of television of all time. It's just fantastic.
I love watching this series with people who haven't seen it yet. Glad you gave it a try, Cassie!
Love this episode. Has two plots that parallel perfectly both about stories that factually are not true but that people choose to tell themselves and hold onto that provide them with a basis for faith that helps them to go on through incredible hardships. Plus the Jane song is hilarious.
One of the things I like about it is the different way of talking. Language idioms change over time and its good that this is shown here.
I love at the end of Jaynestown when Mal and Jayne are talking you can hear the Hero of Canton playing in the background
Jaynestown is by far my favorite episode. Jayne slowly became my favorite character over the course of the show, and it started with that episode.
