The people who are injured/die made informed choices as to why they were in that position (& most of them were unscrupulous as well -- R.I.P. Bendis, whose death usually gets a response as well). The horse was innocent. It's also not for nothing that one of the three things that serial killers have in common is the killing (sometimes torture & mutilation) of animals (usually small ones). People who have little to no compassion for animals don't tend to have compassion for humans either. Reactors (& viewers in general) being really upset when an animal is killed (or harmed in any way) is a good thing: their conscience is showing. ❤🧡💛💚💙💜
@@demoneyeslaharl well, tell me then, what decision did the horse make to end up where it did? every human that died in this episode has mostly made some rather clear decision to get to where they are....
Firefly is a really good show! Unfortunately, it ran on Fox, which was notorious for shuffling good shows around and then canceling them just when they started getting good. The cast for this show had great chemistry!
Jewel Staite, playing Kaylee, was a regular actor on Stargate: Atlantis. And she detests strawberries. We also saw Morena Baccarin as a lizard woman on the television series "V" in the early 2000s. Welcome to Firefly. Looks like you've become a Browncoat already.
This is one of my 2 favorite sci-fi westerns, along with The Adventurers of Brisco County Junior! Kaylee is the heart of the series! This was such a great and fun series! It was killed way too soon by morons! You won't really find out about the Reavers till the movie!
I love the subtle things that make the reavers terrifying. Beyond zoo's description of an encounter, like Inara preparing a leathal injection or Jayne visibility shaking as he loads a weapon. We are terrified at the mention of them from here out
No Spoilers: There was a civil war between the Central Planets like Persephone and the Outer Worlds like Boros. The Central Planets are the Alliance and the Outer Worlds were the rebels known as the Browncoats. Basically the Alliance wanted central rule while the Browncoats wanted each planet to be mostly independent. Mal and Zoe fought for the Browncoats and they lost. As a result they are unable to find "legitimate" work within the Alliance as they are seen as criminals. Joss Whedon stated that he did not want to create another Star Trek. He didn't want to tell a story about high ideals, exploration or diplomacy. He wanted to create a story about working class individuals. He wanted to tell the story about people that the Starship Enterprise would fly past without every noticing. The crew are starving. It is not something that is obvious but throughout the series there are references to it. Wash's idea of a "vacation" is a "meal with some sort of food." They buy fuel for the ship to "keep flying" before they buy food. What they usually eat is basically flavored tofu. Mal refers to it as "Protein in all the colors of the rainbow. That is why the Strawberry and other fresh vegetables are such luxuries. Badger nonchalantly peeling an apple is to show that he can afford such a luxury. It is why the "treasure" turns out to concentrated foodstuff with vitamin supplements. It is a treasure because it is literally more valuable on the Outer Worlds than gold because one cannot eat gold. It is also why whenever you see them having a meal it is treated as a celebration.
It was cancelled mid-season. A season on network TV then was 22 to 24 episodes. Firefly only got 14 episodes. It was cancelled in December. It should have ran through the Spring. But they did get a theatrical film that picks up some of the plot threads left dangling.
Many shows got around 13 episode seasons, particularly for their first season. Buffy for one major example. Many others. Firefly had a 13 episode first season approved. Then the network wanted them to make a new pilot, hence 14 episodes. It got the full season made and was not approved for more seasons/cancelled. But it got the full season it was initially approved for (though several of the episodes were not aired).
@@Logan_Baron on broadcast network TV at that time, the shows, like Buffy, that got a short season premiered in January or February and replaced a series that premiered in the Fall and got cancelled. When a show premiered in the Fall, like Firefly, it was expected to last through Spring.
Wow, you got the relationship and the dynamic of the crew right from the start. A lot of people need a few episodes to get a grasp of it. Great attention to details. Looking real forward seeing you react to the rest of the show.
Firefly didn't even get a season - the show was cancelled mid season. This show is from a time when shows had actual seasons with 20+ episodes, not the crap from today where they make like 6 episodes and call that a "season" which is utterly ridiculous.
Its hilarious, every woman who reviews this complains that Mal doesnt tell Inara he is interested, and NONE of them complain that Inara doesn't admit her interest in Mal.
Why would they? We're expected to make the first move. That behavior is as old as humans. It's our ancient role to stand between danger and women and children, and that's reflected in this expectation.
@sirmoonslosthismind So they say. OPs comment indicates differently. 170 thousand years of human behavior isn't easily rejected. This isn't a value judgment, I'm glad we have the luxury to do things differently if we choose.
You were close about Inara. A Companion can be seen equivalent to a Geisha, or an 18th century French Courtesan. They have high social status, and are know for their education & culture. It takes great training to become a Companion. Mal is rude to her because (as you perceived) he has strong feelings for her. He also respects her life choices, which means she's not the involvement type. Thus the conflict he feels, which he tries to cover with cheap insults. Every character has a deep past. For example, Mal was wearing a cross during the battle, but now he shows hostility to a preacher.
I still hold a grudge to Fox for canceling this show. Death Slot, out of order, skipping weeks to show baseball. This episode did not please the Fox high ups and wanted a "more exiting" episode to open. Thus we get Train Job. You will see some of the "building of characters", but not nearly as Indepth ass this episode did.
I don't typically do reactions but i will always stop in for firefly. (OK, So that has pulled me into a few channels lol) Welcome to the verse. 😁 This show had/has some of the very best character dynamics ever developed on screen. I know you will come to love them as we all do Ill definitely be joining you an your assent into the verse. Cant wait till you get to my favorites 😊
As everyone will tell you, Fox did what they could to sabotage this show. It aired out of order, the episodes aired at different times of night, they had to re shoot the pilot because executives underestimated the audience. And it was killed mid-season with multiple episodes never aired. Partially because of a top management change at Fox, which forces internal changes, partially because the executives didn't understand it, and partially, and this is my opinion only, they didn't want to make it, it was way to expensive and the upper management didn't want to make such high quality productions the norm, but Joss had too much pull those days so they could not say no, but opted to sabotage it instead.
Exciting day!!! I love your reactions, and now I get to see you watch one of my favorite shows. I hope, and trust that you will love it as much as I, and all of my fellow Browncoats do.
It's even worse than getting cancelled midway through the first season. The episodes were aired out of order, and were preempted for baseball several times. The network had no idea what to do with the show, and more or less intentionally killed it.
I have the blu-ray set (gotten before it was streamable). They are in plot order on the disk, but the back of the box notes the order they were aired and the 2 or 3 episodes that were never aired. In addition to airing them out of order and occasionally cancelling them for sports, Fox kept changing their time slot. In their 13 episodes the slot was changed at least 3 times, each on a different day, and always opposite a popular show on another network. Fox did literally everything they could to purposefully tank the show while still fulfilling their contractual obligation to air it.
"I really enjoyed this" Everybody does!! ;-) This series (and the movie) will put you through some changes. Total roller coaster...gets funnier and even more intense (at times gut wrenching) but the story arc is grand! (Who knew that the creator of Buffy The Vampire Slayer TV series would produce something like this?) And the show was released out of sequence! (There are guides that will show you the original intended sequence)
I watched Castle as well, but it was only after I saw on UA-cam that throughout the Castle series that they would make references to Firefly. I didn't watch the TV episodes until after I saw the movie Serenity fell in love with the writing and the cast, but once I found out it was a series first, I sought out the DVDs and fell in love with it even more.
I highly recommend watching "The Expanse" after this. IMO the three best Sci-Fi shows of all time are "Firefly", "Battlestar Galactica" (2004) and "The Expanse" and "Firefly" and "The Expanse" have similar levels of enjoyment with "Battlestar Galactica" being a little harder to watch but having moments where it's becomes the best of the three, but "The Expanse" has become my favourite show off all time and a show that I have rewatched and watched reactions to so many times that I have lost count. Before "The Expanse", "Firefly" would have been the show I would have rewatched the most and I think "Battlestar Galactica" has gotten better and more relevant as the years have gone by and I have an even higher opinion of it now than when I first watched it and I think it's because I'm more interested in the politics on the show and how it relates to our present time period. However, if you want a show with political issues that that overlap with "Battlestar Galactica" and you want to go on one hell of an entertaining ride watch "The Expanse". A lot of people that watch "Firefly" also watch "The Expanse" and "Battlestar Galactica".
The official reason it was cancelled was because of low ratings. However, the network (FOX) put it in the Friday Night "death slot" and showed the episodes OUT OF ORDER! WTF!?! That might have had something to do with it.
They canceled the show halfway through filming, hence why we only got half a season. It was a very expensive, and at the time experimental show. The studio had no confidence in it.
Actually the Fox Execs sabotaged the show due to a change in the Executive board and a disagreement between the new board and Joss about the direction of the show should take. They forced him to write a new script for the pilot a week before shooting was supposed to start hoping he wouldn't be able to do it, he did. You'll see the new pilot as the 2nd episode, the original pilot which you just watched was screened last.
I'm looking forward to your reactions to this series. Oh, the sinks and toilets are what's normally used in US Navy submarines due to the lack of space.
Curious if you’ve watched The Expanse. If not, you gotta get on that! Think of it as Firefly, but with an R rating and an Amazon budget. It’s sci-fi perfection 👌
I suspect her client was trying to make a joke, but (as the writing intends) it didn't land. That's happened to me a few times (though obviously not in those circumstances).
Don't know if it has been mentioned but Nathan Fillion also played, "James Fredrich Ryan" from Minnesota in the great war film, "Saving Private Ryan." He was the wrong Ryan of course. Again, y'all be safe.
Now you see we are... likelong fans of this series. We Browncoats will always want to rewatch this, and see new people react to it. Sometimes we fight. Sometimes we love. Sometimes they're in their bunk. ;)
love your chewbacca teddy bear. 3:30 wait, you've never seen a show with cold openings before the credits? Like Star Trek TNG? It's fairly common... 27:39 Mal hasn't got time for your crap right now, mister hostage taker.
Hi Kazzy!😊 Nice to see you back doing a live action series! This is absolutely one of my all time favorite series. The characters become very likeable after watching several episodes. I hope you are doing well health wise.🙏🏻 You look good.😊 Nathan Fillion was recently in the latest Guardians of the Galaxy film. Great reactions to this very well made Firefly episode, Kazzy!!!!🎬👏👏👏👏
Once you are done with Firefly, I would highly recommend you check out the show called "The Expanse". You say you love sci-fi, and from all the memorabilia behind you, I can see that is so, I know you would absolutely love The Expanse. It's based on a nine book saga. It Started on the Sci-Fi Channel and was going to end after the third season, but the fans rallied, and were able to convince Jeff Bezos of Amazon to pick up the show and continue for another three seasons. The Expanse has become my all time favorite sci-fi series. (I just check and see that you are done with Firefly. Awesome, I will go watch them all).
I love this incomplete masterpiece of a series. It goes in this order: 1) 14 episodes (seasons were normally 22-23 episodes long back then, often with a double length pilot - this series was sabotaged & canceled early due to executive politics at FOX) 2) Movie teaser "The River Tam Sessions" - best watched in release order and not the fan made chronological order. 3) Serenity movie will finish the main story (yes, it has the same name as the pilot episode you just watched) 4) Bloopers and Deleted scenes 5) Comics, Novels, and Role Playing Games for tying up loose ends and more Official Lore. Some of my thoughts on this pilot episode: Everything shown has a well written, nuanced reason behind it. Even the minor characters & scenes have depth. - The Shepherd took down a trained Federal Lawman pretty efficiently. - When Mal told Simon "Kaylee is dead" it was more than just a cruel joke. Mal was also testing him. Mal made it a point to look at Simon's reaction. He even mentioned it to the crew "You should have seen his face!". Simon's concerned response for Kaylee (and not for himself & sister) is why Mal offered him a position on his crew at the end. - People are used to eating synthesized food so it's a big deal when a real strawberry and fresh produce shows up. - Drinking water would be very limited on a ship. Using very little to rinse your hands and face would be necessary. Chances are that isn't drinking water but more of a sanitizer/cleaner that Mal used sparingly on his hands and face during his bathroom break.
Clearly you have never seen Whedon shows ike Buffy which, like this show and like Hitchcock films (see North by Northwest, Rear Window, The Lady Vanishes...), mixes genres, gender concerns, emotional realism, and existentialism. This show and Buffy, with their mix of comedy, drama, tragedy, parody, satire, wit (a lost art today among the kiddies), and so on, is so much more intelligent than the popcorn you reference.
Violent/intense shows? :) To find out why I'm laughing AT you, not with you, put Band of Brothers on your to be watched list. On second thought, don't, it may be too intense. No,not tears, 1,000 yard stare.
If you are looking for an amazing Sci-fi series that has a lovely community I can recommend the Expanse greatly. It's probably my favourite show together with Firefly
Discovered by scientists in 2020, 34Tauri(2020) is a star cluster, of the likes of the triple star system Alpha Centauri. It consists of five main sequence stars, around which orbit seven protostars, seven gas giants, three separate asteroid belts, seventy-five planets, and one hundred forty-nine moons.[1] Four of the main sequence stars orbit a central star. All the worlds that make up the 'Verse have two names, a Sino (Chinese) name and Anglo (English) name. Sometimes, only one is used officially. This is not the case with the five main sequence stars. The Sino names of the five stars are based on the old-world concept of the Five Chinese Constellations. The Anglo names are given by the actual temperature-spectral color of the sun, with the exception of two which are yellow, named Georgia and Kalidasa.
The opening scene, the Battle of Serenity Valley, shows where Mal lost his faith in pretty much everything. So, his feelings for Innara are something he does not trust, and he is afraid of betting hurt. So he keeps her at a distance. That is why he treats here like he does.
The studio wanted Firefly to fail. Like, they advertised the premiere, but then switched the air date with no notice to a different day, so people who did want to tune in, missed it, tanking its debut numbers. And they showed the first episodes out of order, so it didn't make any sense. And they put it in the absolute worst possible time slot. Basically, every single decision that could be made to sabotage it was made.
The guy with Morena Baccarin was not being rude but was very poorly attempting to make a joke or be witty. The Alliance is the merger of the US and China. This mixing of Mandarin with English. Much of the Mandarin used is for profanity to get by the censors. In Asia out of respect, people will frequently refer to an elderly man or woman as grandpa or grandma. The actress playing Kaylee doesn't like strawberries. A companion is basically a blend of geisha and consort. This takes place in just one solar system but too often they refer to it as the galaxy. Cancelation of Fire It was not by accident. The exec that green-lit the series got promoted and the exec that took the spot decided to get rid of the show before it aired. First came the misinformed promotional ads for the show. Next came not liking the 2-hour pilot as not having enough action at the last minute. That resulted in The Train Job as the first aired episode. Then came airing several episodes out of order. Not enough so they changed the air time without notice to the viewers. Canceled after 10 episodes and then they aired the 2-hour pilot episode. Once more without notice, they air the 3 unair episodes over the summer. The series was to be 22 episode seasons with 5-7 seasons. The movie was not by FOX but by fans coming up with something like $35 million for a movie. The movie was intended to be the first of a series of movies to continue the story. Universal botched the movie's promotion a bit out of greed and lack of forethought, resulting in a flop. So the movie expecting many having never watched the series back peddled a bit on character development and then continued the story. At a guess, the movie covers mostly stuff that would have been in season 2 and maybe season 3. If you find you need some Sci-Fi/Fantasy violence fix you could try the new anime Solo Leveling.
You would really love to read up on Firefly fan history and love. The line from Gina Tores is so apropos in this instance. “Like having warm honey poured over your naked body” or words to that effect.

Reactors (& viewers in general) being really upset when an animal is killed (or harmed in any way) is a good thing: their conscience is showing. ❤🧡💛💚💙💜

Horses are incredibly intelligent creatures, capable of deep relationships with people.
@@becca1189Jeez, the first sentence already tries to justify it by making very big assumptions.
Yes, she was the Hive Queen
Never seen you before right now, but you did a great reaction to Firefly's opener. Look forward to more.
I hated Sifi and my roommate 14 years ago said it’s like a space western and I was sold, so good
23:14
Plays a mean trick on the audience. Laughs in their face about it. And we still love it. Only this show
This is one of my 2 favorite sci-fi westerns, along with The Adventurers of Brisco County Junior!
We are terrified at the mention of them from here out
Nathan Fillion also has a show that's been on lately called "The Rookie".
You mentioned the style of music in the show. The writing is also great.
Well said. Brown coats forever.
Yep - the quality of the meal in any given episode is an instant flag of how they're doing.
Ixhave never seen your channel before, but I love Firefly. Ill go on this journey with you.
It was cancelled mid-season. A season on network TV then was 22 to 24 episodes. Firefly only got 14 episodes. It was cancelled in December. It should have ran through the Spring. But they did get a theatrical film that picks up some of the plot threads left dangling.
Yeah, apparently it was not marketed well. It was put in a bad time slot and initially aird the episodes out of order.
@@Logan_Baron wrong.
Wow, you got the relationship and the dynamic of the crew right from the start. A lot of people need a few episodes to get a grasp of it. Great attention to details. Looking real forward seeing you react to the rest of the show.
Firefly didn't even get a season - the show was cancelled mid season. This show is from a time when shows had actual seasons with 20+ episodes, not the crap from today where they make like 6 episodes and call that a "season" which is utterly ridiculous.
..a fan of filler episodes i see?
New Firefly reactor?!? Instant sub!
@@blairhaffly1777
um maybe because a majority of people have rejected those "ancient" gender roles?
@sirmoonslosthismind So they say. OPs comment indicates differently. 170 thousand years of human behavior isn't easily rejected. This isn't a value judgment, I'm glad we have the luxury to do things differently if we choose.
This show is amazeballs!
I could bore you with Browncoat lore but I’m sure it has already been said (typed).
Enjoy the ride.
Welcome to the Browncoats. 13 hours of bliss and a lifetime of withdrawal
"If you like her, dude, tell her."
If I had a penny for every Firefly fan who said this in the first episode....
I'd have a decent amount of money.
Welcome to the verse !
"It's just Serenity" though ;)
I don't typically do reactions but i will always stop in for firefly. (OK, So that has pulled me into a few channels lol)
Welcome to the verse. 😁
This show had/has some of the very best character dynamics ever developed on screen. I know you will come to love them as we all do
Ill definitely be joining you an your assent into the verse. Cant wait till you get to my favorites 😊
Mal didn't kill the horse. Patience did when she tried to use it for cover.
Mal just carried the bullet a while.
"A live horse is chaos, a dead horse is cover" -Mal at some point, I'm pretty sure.
@@isaackellogg3493 Nice reference.
Adam Baldwin. Not related to the Baldwin family of Alec.
Nice to see you again. Its been a long time since Cobra Kai.❤
The VFX were done by Zoic Studios. I had a chance to work there if only I didn't live on the wrong side of the country.
companion = space geisha
Ooh, looking forward to this one; one of my favorite shows of all time.
good to see you back and you are looking great
Mark sheppard, he is in EVERYTHING. he's 'that guy'.
i hope you'll start doing movies again (in addition to what you're doing now).
A famous member of 'Barney Millers' police team was Ron Glass...aka...Shepherd Booke...=))
Watching Firefly and wearing Led Zeppelin shirts... Hell yeah!
14:48 That's some interesting editing.
"I brought you some supper. One has lepers!"
"I think I'll pass."
"I brought you some supper.
I do have some sermons prepared, if you prefer. One has lepers!"
Yes, mon capitan, but that's not how the conversation went in this video. Hence my use of the word editing.
"I really enjoyed this"
Everybody does!! ;-)
This series (and the movie) will put you through some changes. Total roller coaster...gets funnier and even more intense (at times gut wrenching) but the story arc is grand! (Who knew that the creator of Buffy The Vampire Slayer TV series would produce something like this?)
And the show was released out of sequence!
IMO the best sci-fi series ever. It wasn't continued because of Fox's sheer incompetence.
Oh this show was hardcore all right: hc character & quality driven, which makes it special ;)
Have you seen GENV? Fantastic little sister to THE BOYS.
Now you're probably wondering "Why the heck didn't I watch this sooner?!" are most peoples comments :)
Next up, Buffy? My ranking of Whedon shows is Buffy>Dollhouse>Firefly>Angel, but I wouldn’t say any were more bad than good.
You're going to love this show. SUBSCRIBED so that I can follow your journey.
I suspect her client was trying to make a joke, but (as the writing intends) it didn't land. That's happened to me a few times (though obviously not in those circumstances).
From your reaction, I'm thinking you'll be a Browncoat in no time!
Adam Baldwin, not Daniel. 😉
Love the Led Zep shirt!
Sometimes they're in their bunk. ;)
As a Joss Whedon project, a central theme will be Found Family.
love your chewbacca teddy bear.
3:30 wait, you've never seen a show with cold openings before the credits? Like Star Trek TNG? It's fairly common...
27:39 Mal hasn't got time for your crap right now, mister hostage taker.
The customer wasn’t trying to be mean to Inara. He was inexperienced and I think just nervous or attempting an awkward compliment.
I've seen her something before. A movie? TV show? Just can't place it.
I love this incomplete masterpiece of a series.
It goes in this order:
1) 14 episodes (seasons were normally 22-23 episodes long back then, often with a double length pilot - this series was sabotaged & canceled early due to executive politics at FOX)
2) Movie teaser "The River Tam Sessions" - best watched in release order and not the fan made chronological order.
3) Serenity movie will finish the main story (yes, it has the same name as the pilot episode you just watched)
4) Bloopers and Deleted scenes
5) Comics, Novels, and Role Playing Games for tying up loose ends and more Official Lore.
Some of my thoughts on this pilot episode:
Everything shown has a well written, nuanced reason behind it.
It was cancelled before it even screened here in Australia, it didn't even get a full season. Glad to see more people coming into the fold.

Here's a drinking game while watching Firefly.
You take a drink every time Simon gets punched in the face!
I wouldn't say psychotic, I would call that Veteran type sense of humor.
The opening scene, the Battle of Serenity Valley, shows where Mal lost his faith in pretty much everything. So, his feelings for Innara are something he does not trust, and he is afraid of betting hurt. So he keeps her at a distance. That is why he treats here like he does.
...what is it with everyone caring only about the animals nowadays, not people...?
If you enjoy sci-fi, you should check out Farscape (aussie tv series, 4 seasons). Welcome to Firefly!
Before long you will absolutely love these characters.
And nice T-shirt. I have one just like it.
"Jayne is the last person you'd want as PR." 🤣
Well depends on who you're wanting to "relate" to ;) 😂
The guy with Morena Baccarin was not being rude but was very poorly attempting to make a joke or be witty.
Cancelation of Fire
It was not by accident.
