“There ain’t people like that! There’s just people like me.”
Jayne knows he’s not a good guy, but he sort of wishes that he was.

Hi 😊 I have liked the videos that you have done for Firefly. I was just wondering, since you are a fan of Nathan Fillion, are you familiar with the current show he is on. It is billed as a police procedural, but it is not really, it is a lot more character centered than it is focused on a case or mystery like Castle. It is called The Rookie and it is produced by ABC.

No one ever cared about Jayne. He was rough, vulgar, selfish, poor, and not the smartest guy. He was only seen as garbage to most people, only Mal really could see his potential. So when people treated him like he was great, of course he selfishly ate it up. But when someone DIED for him....he couldn't even fathom the idea.

I love how during Jayne’s speech in front of the crowd, his pose is the same as his statue behind him. The episode really shows how he knows not only that he’s flawed, but also that he doesn’t feel worthy of admiration, and you hope he’ll start to show more redeeming qualities.

_"Interesting, I did not know that."_ Possibly because Simon's claim that slaves built the Pyramids doesn't have any scientific support. The theory that archaeologists are running with today is that the builders were very skilled, _paid_ craftsmen, a theory that gained extra support when workers' cemeteries were found 12 years before this episode was shot. Thanks for putting this reaction on UA-cam as well, and I hope you're doing better healthwise!

My favorite line in the entire series is in this episode. Right at the end when Mal says “I suspect every man got a statute made of him is some sorta sumbitch or another”.

I think this episode is about faith. On the one hand River and Book dealing with the topic and on the other hand the town and Jayne. I guess to both applies "It's not about you, it's about what they need". Seems a typical Josh Whedon point of view.

I'd like to know how Jayne and the rest of the crew got away. The foreman and his Prods were just standing by, but after Stitch died, there wouldn't have been anything stopping them from moving in and grabbing Jayne.

Nice reaction ... but just so you know ... Jayne *_IS_* a hero, but you just don't know it (or why) yet !!! He comes off as callous, unthinking, mean or even dumb at times, but you only see what you (and they) want you to see. As with moist people, there's a LOT more to Jayne than you know, and that's all I'm gonna say about that. But, like River, pay closer attention to what he says and does ... because there are clues staring you right in the face that you aren't picking up ... yet.

This episode could have easily been called _Symbolism._ The stories (A, B and C) illustrate symbols and their effect upon people. In the A-Story we have Jayne and what he symbolizes to the town folk. In the B-Story we have _Faith_ and what it represents to the Shepard. And in the C-Story we have _Virginity_ and what it represents to Fess Higgins.
For the oppressed town folk, Jayne represents rebellion and liberty. They've built this entire Robin Hood mythos around Jayne robbing and dropping the loot on their camp. But the money did them no lasting good. They are still slaves and living in squalid conditions. But as Mal says, it's not about Jayne but about what the townsfolk need. They need the myth of Jayne. They need to sing their song of Jayne and forget their misery for a few minutes and imagine that they too are brave heroes like they made Jayne out to be. I always think of that line from the Billy Joel song, _Piano Man._ The people sing their song of Jayne to also , "forget about life for awhile." I think Mal is correct. They likely put Jayne's statue back up and went on with their lives.
For Fess, his virginity is a symbol of his immaturity in the eyes of his father. It is not a hopeful symbol but rather an anchor that is holding him back. His virginity is something he thinks that he needs to shed before he can become the man his father wants him to be and the man he wants to be for his father. But after losing it he feels no difference. He realizes that it is just a symbol and nothing more. Losing it doesn't change anything. The change must come from elsewhere.
For Shepard Book, the Bible is a symbol of his faith. In a dark time to come we will see Preacher clinging to his Bible and trying to draw courage from its words. Meanwhile to the faithless River the Bible isn't just a book like hundreds of others she has read. And it isn't just like those other books filled with inconsistencies and errors. I think THIS Bible is symbol of River's struggle to make sense of the trauma she has experienced. She is desperately trying to fix all of the contradictions and errors she find within it. Perhaps she believes that once she has done so she will be able to turn her attention to her own shattered mind.
Many who suffer a trauma will focus their attention on some mundane thing that they can "fix" in order to try to regain some control over their lives. A widow will often cook elaborate meals for mourners and then spend all of her time in the kitchen washing every dish and utensil being used. That constant cooking, serving and washing is an effort to put to order a world that has suddenly become chaotic due to the loss of a spouse.
But these are just some of my thoughts. Being thought provoking is what makes this writing so good. One could spend hours discussing these symbols and others. For example, her Shuttle is a symbol that represents Inara's independence. Note how she objects to the Magistrate's presence as she hurries him out. Inara's freedom to choose her clients symbolizes her sovereignty over her own body despite living in an oppressive and authoritarian State which not only permits but endorses the likes of Magistrate Higgins to lord over an entire moon of "slaves." Higgins may be able to own others but he cannot own Inara. Or could he? That discussion could get very deep indeed.

I liked your reaction to this. It's one of the funniest episodes. But you mentioned horror films in October and I have been trying a way to make suggestions for a couple of out of the norm fun ones that I thik you will enjoy. But I cannot find a private way to do it. So how do you take requests?

As well as that many reactors put a short blurb at the beginning explaining it had been a Patreon exclusive and now they are putting it on YT. Then they thank YT for showing up. It's not a real criticism of her I just wondered why we couldn't be thanked too. 🫤@@becca1189
