A reboot of Firefly would likely destroy the memory of this short-lived series. The actors and the writers of any reboot would need to be as amazing as the originals, which I do not see as possible in today's entertainment industry.

They did it with Battlestar galactica, but it was a completely different show than the original and any reboot of Firefly would probably have to be its own show to survive or thrive.

Mal and Inara would not work as a couple. They are both A type personalities. I don't think she would ever give up her career, and he could never accept her unless she did. He's not the type to share his woman with anyone else.
Yeah, Mal was raised too religiously conservative, he couldn't be with Inara while she continues to work; Inara can't give up her calling, it gives her purpose.
Joss whedon had a plan for why inara was avoiding the relationship (beyond the companion complication) that never came to fruition with the show cancelled. Im sure others will mention it but hopefully not til after the movie.
Inara's job, and her status, is tied to her Guild. It requires her to lie about her true feelings. This brings her conflict into focus- she can have Mal, and give up her wealth and life style, or she can keep them and go somewhere else. She WANTS to stay, but she can't quite give up the other. ( There is also another readon for her to go.) She has made the hard choice...
One of the greatest acting scenes is when Mal finds Inara with Nandi’s body. Rewatch it. Neither one of them says a single word. But she gives him three different looks and he fully understands each one. The last look is her ordering him to go avenge her friend. Brilliant.
The scene with Inara and Mal right after Nandi is killed, that scene is absolutely amazing. So much said, so many feelings conveyed, with nothing but facial expressions and eyes. Some of the most masterful non verbal acting I have EVER seen.
This one probably didn't have the usually intro, because it was one of 3 FOX didn't air.
Makes sense, why spend the money adding the intros when it won't air.

I can barely get through "Heart of Gold" without my eyes being nonstop misty, and there are a couple of moments that elicit involuntary sobs. It's a VERY strong episode.
Funny, this is one episode I skip no matter how much I love the show and enjoy the reactor. It is pathetic and for me does nothing to promote the over all arc of the story or the crew.
Basically she’s in love with a guy but keeps him waiting for it while being a 304. Then when he goes elsewhere for once after being blue balled for ages she storms off in a huff. This isn’t the future this is 21st century this is a modern woman of today. Next she pull a Me2 on him and ruin his life . . .

1:34 "The usual introduction"... That is actually two introductions. The originally aired episodes did not have the characters with a callback to what has happened before. No general "get a ship, get a job, keep flying" either.
It was revealed after the show was finished that Inara had a terminal illness. That is why she gave up her ambitions within the Companion house and wanted to travel on Serenity to see the 'verse before she died. That is why she didnt want to get involved with Mal, because she didnt want him to go thru the heartbreak after she died.
This is a major spoiler, because it changes your perception on how you see her, it was the exact thing I wanted Kazzy to find out later.
@@voiceover2191 When do they reveal this, though? I don't recall them mentioning it in the show or the movie. I had to find out from post-show sources, I think it was a one-off reunion talk show.
@@extantsanity Yes it is not mentioned in the show, but knowing it changes the way you look at her character and why and how she acts, so in that sense it changes your untainted viewing experience, meaning if you don't tell, you get both: the viewing experience when not knowing and a repeat view, if you want, while knowing it, which would have been nice I guess.

Ma’am, think about your reaction to Mal and Nandi. Inara literally sleeps around all the time, but you get upset because Mal lays one woman. Then at the end you talk about Inara’s profession, as being an issue for HER being in a relationship, but not an issue for Mal. It’s almost hilarious.
Planting the seeds of Wash and Zoe having a child was something that Gina Torres pushed for as the series was just getting started. The reason was that Gina had just gotten or was about to get married to Laurence Fishburn, and she told Joss Whedon that she was "planning on getting knocked up soon, so you had better be prepared for a pregnant Zoe on the show."
Since you've become a fan of Joss Whedon's work, have you ever tried his magnum opus in Buffy the Vampire Slayer? If you haven't, will you try?
I think if a continuation were to happen, given the time that has passed, that it would have to revolve around Emma Washburn. That way they can still bring in the Serenity crew to make appearances and still have it be its own thing.
Of all the times I've rewatched this show, this is the first time I've noticed the area where they bury Nandie looks just like the area Mal had his duel in 'Shindig'

Ahhhhh, I wasn't on your chanel for like 3 years.
I used to watch your videos a looot.
Plan for season 2 THAT WAS ABANDONED AND NOT CANON FOR THE MOVIE:: Inara had inoperable space cancer or whatever (Simon knew and was alleviating symptoms). She avoided any emotional ties - first at the temple, then Serenity. An episode they were going to have: They are close to but not in orbit around a world and Inara is off on business. They attacked by reavers, but manage to escape in the other shuttle and the radio is damaged somehow. As they leave they watch in horror as Inara docks with Serenity. They get help and we learn that needle was not to commit suicide, it turned her mucus into a contact poison. With a "sane" person raping her it is like Ben Gay on your weiner and you stop. With a Reaver they rape her until they die. Then the next one starts. When they return with help, all the Reavers are dead in a pile in Inara's shuttle and Inara is in the fetal position and crying. Inara stays on board and does not ply her trade. NONE of that happened before, after, or during the movie.
I would hate to see them try to remake Firefly without the original cast. But, I would be open to a prequel series where the ship is the main character and was more than a smuggling/cargo ship, perhaps changing hands and configuration several times: a mobile saloon with a scheduled route between camps on mining planets, a brothel, and even as a warship. When a Firefly class ship is configured as a gun ship, it’s called a Dragonfly. And it would be a cruel irony if one of its last tours before the scrapyard where Mal bought her was as an Alliance gunship that helped pacify the Independent Browncoats at Serenity Valley. Unfortunately, it might be harder to bring continuity and comedy into such a show.

There's some background story as to what motivated Inara to do this, but I don't want to influence your viewing experience, I'll allude to it after you have seen the movie.
Indeed a great episode and I must admit, I fell for Nandi "more than a little" as she would have said. Beauty and Brains, nothing more alluring. Interesting to know why they went independent from the guild.
Jason Bateman? Probably Ozark. Loved that show too, second season it went a bit down in quality in my opinion but from 3 on was fantastic again and never let up.
What I remind myself is: just because Inara says she is leaving doesn't mean she actually would have. Things are constantly changing on Serenity. The plan for the series may have included Inara changing her mind.

I think that's absolutely the point, she said she's a little appalled with her taste, because it's her taste, because she feels angry at herself in that moment. Because she's let herself exist in this limbo for so long, and it has only gotten harder to leave, and she feels the need to make a choice. And so she leaves.

Inara had a secret. That and a thousand other secrets are gone with Joss Whedon. Well, a writers' roundtable on UA-cam gave us the answer at last, but I shan't blurt it out here.
Fox finally came to its senses about 5-7 years back and issued a general call to Joss and all the cast to resume the series. Almost all the actors said no...rumor has it the Captain was the only yes vote. What everyone else thought they were doing that was better, I just don't get.
Joss did not deserve what was done to him. We've lost so much for the petty vengeance of petty insubordinate actors. A bad time in history ate a career.
I guess you'll have to wait like we all did, to see if your questions get answered. If not, there's always the movie.

What isn't answered in the movie will be answered after the movie. Maybe not to your satisfaction, but at least you'll have an answer.
Firefly was lightning in a bottle in DVD sales. However, it is a very expensive show, which doomed it for network TV, so it would take a big committment to reboot it as a streaming show.
What really doomed it was the miserable viewer count. The network played the episodes out of sequence, so none of it made sense.
Sure the expense didn’t help, but it still blows my mind that they spent that much and continued to air the episodes out of order. You’d think they’d have someone checking for that.
@@jippy8976 it was deliberate.. the network leadership changed and new leadership did everything to sabotage stuff conceived under the old leadership to make room for their own projects... shit like this still happens to this very day.. just look at what happened at hbo when they got a new boss a couple of years back
@@jippy8976 It was intentional to sabotage the show by the new executive that came in. From airing out of order to changing the days and times with no notice of when the next episode would be.

Mal is responsible for his feelings.
Not Inara's.
She just assumes he knew about Inara's feelings for him but did not tell Nandy, by which she means to say that if he had told her (which he couldn't as indeed he didn't know) she would not have slept with him and hurt Inara that way.
Yeah this show is show, but still good.

Inara's identity is tied up in being a member of the guild. She may live in the gray area, but is inwilling to cut ties.
Mal's identity is an indepedent, he does not attend to any creed or oath but his own.
Kaley once asked Inara if Companions could date, Inaa replied, "it's complicated ". Nandy tells us that Inara, hates complications.
Inara has to be honest with hersrlf before she can be honest with Mal.

How I've always seen the Inara x Mal romance: Inara knows about his feelings, but is too bound by her job to consider giving it up, even to be with him. Mal, however, doesn't know about Inara's feelings and doesn't feel good enough to be with her.
When I first watched this episode, I wondered if Inara and Nandi's relationship was a lot closer... perhaps even family. At one point I thought they were sisters... the term Nandi uses at the end of the call was "meimei," which is word that means "little sister." But other folks use the term to denote an exceptionally close or affectionate relationship. So it makes sense that she would be able to tell about Inara from the look they exchanged. Also, I think the show with Jason Bateman is called Ozark. When he first started that, there was a show on HBO that he was in (briefly) called "The Outsider" and was pretty compelling! I would recommend that to you, if you like mystery mixed with supernatural horror. It is short (1 season/10 eps. Looking forward to the Firefly finale and then the movie!!
I have to put this out there, why is it that every woman has a problem with Malcolm sleeping with the madam? By this point in the series, Aurora has already slept with four people.
I didn't really got that impression here. Kazzy was fine with Mal sleeping with Nandi, she just was worried it would hurt Inara and ruin the chances of them ending up together. (Sure, ignoring the vise versa). The "problem" I have is the idea of them both not being honest with each other. At the end, Mal was being honest and Inara shut him down. Inara has known all along Mal likes her, Mal doesn't know (he might hope, but doesn't know). So, imo after the ending it is only Inara that stopped them from having a relationship.
Aurora? I presume you mean Inara. There is a difference, in that to Inara it is her profession, not love or true affection and she knows Mal did it out of true affection. The romantics feel that he should have saved it for his true love, it would have perpetuated the illusion of perfect, unfulfilled, love. It somehow tainted it by Mal sleeping with Nandy. Personally I disagree with that notion, but I understand it and of course the notion is additionally fed by us witnessing the scene with Inara crying.
Inara brags that she’s not puritanical or whatever she said about sex, and then cries about Mal not being puritanical about sex. She insists that Mal respect what she does, and she will not service in the course of her profession. We all understand the “difference.” It is nonetheless immaterial. Inara is being selfishly, hypocritical, and female reactors to the show are lending themselves to that.
The reactor’s conclusion is astonishing. She’s wanting them to get together, and talking about Inara’s profession unironically. It doesn’t even register with her.

Because Mel is a loner... that's part of his ethos. Lone wolf, hero, etc. My thought is, it would be counter to the entire story if he ever "was" with anyone. What? settle down in a nice little cabin.... that's not his way as a character. "Being with" someone; not his way.
You keep saying that Mal and Inara haven't been honest with each other. Since the series was cancelled, many storylines that were started or hinted at never got a chance to play out. The relationship between Mal & Inara is one of those storylines that never got told, except at Firefly reunions when Joss Whedon would makes hints about what he had in mind for future episodes. There is more to this story that's always been in the backround but never revealed, except for a couple of hints in past dialog that went over everyone's head. I'll tell you after you watch Serenity, but believe me when I say that Inara is very aware of her love for Mal but will go to any lengths to not let a relationship develop.

See if you can find Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency. Elijah Wood is one of the co-stars. If you liked him in Lord of the Ring, you'll like him in this. It's another show that was ended too soon. It only lasted 2 seasons. It might take a couple episodes to get into, but I think you'll like it.

@@JimAW63 I just disliked the whole fantasy world theme, it was stupid and something very much not fitting with Douglas Adams. The first season had that in spades. Don't know who wrote the second season, but they totally didn't get it.
In the first season of most shows, the love connection between characters are drawn out. It usually takes several seasons for characters to get together.
FYI. Inara has a secret.
And once you know her secret, all her actions throughout the series make perfect sense.

To answer your question without seeing the react first.. they can't be together because of Inara's bad choices. She has background stuff going on but she is the antagonist in her/mals love story.
Any reboot of Firefly would need to include Zoe and Wash's baby.
Would love to see a "new crew" with Mal and Inara's daughter being the captain, and Zoe and Wash's (Zoe pregnant after this episode based on their conversation) son being the pilot. Cameos from uncle Jayne, visits to Simon and Kaylee. Flashbacks with Mal, possibly him talking to "ghost" Wash talking to him like his conscience (which is why daughter captain doesn't "get along" with her father). I can see all kinds of awesomeness from a reboot done well.
Inara puts Mal through the same feelings on just about every planet they visit. It's kinda hard to feel bad for her.
I feel the need to warn Kazzy, who said she likes this show because it is relaxing, that the movie, Serenity, is very intense -- more akin to horror
I don't know where in Canada you live, if it's the Vancouver area, Jewel Staite (Kaylee) lives and films her latest show (Family Law) there.

Long reply, but you have much bad info. First Joss Whedon made a woman writer cry ON THIS SHOW. The network was making suggestions like adding aliens If that was her suggestion I'm glad he yelled at her. Now to get your feminist side with feminist logic. Do you actually want equality? Male writers coming up with stupid ideas get yelled at - can women do the job or are they too delicate? Now why a remake now would suck. It would be "improved" for modern audiences. Mal would be short for Mallory a strong independent woman who don't need no man. Zoe stays the same, but Wash is her lesbian marriage partner Jayne is unchanged - only a CIS white male can do Arial. Inara stays the same, but all her clients are like Atherton Wing and never like the magistrates son in Jaynestown. River and the Doctor are unchanged but Kaylee is a trans man or is it trans woman - male to female.. The doctors reticence as a beautiful (and brave :) ) woman throws herself at him would be his own transphobia he needs to work through. I have not worked out how to blame Trump for the China/US alliance, but it would be done. Oh this is the best scenario. It was on FOX. Disney bought FOX. You would remove Joss and replace him with Kathleen Kennedy.
