I'm honestly so surprised by how few species have a menstrual cycle. I knew it was just mammals but less than 2% of them? That makes it even more fascinating!
So rare! We're extremely lucky to have discovered the spiny mouse menstrual cycle - let's hope more research continues to come out and other labs around the world see the value in them as well
Lol at the blue liquid pad commercials and also spaghetti sauce on bed sheets!! I've seen that a couple times and was so confused like who is eating spaghetti in bed??? Lol took a minute to click.
@dr_jarrod_mckenna Good talk.👍 We should not only be able to talk about these kind of important elementary things openly, but also learn to appreciate getting useful information from others, regardless of gender or even species. You combined it really well here, thank you for sharing.
I think the sad part is how common the type of harmful rhetoric still is. As girls we're taught to think of it as unclean and be embarrassed about anyone knowing and I really do think that has lasting consequences for how we perceive ourselves
Absolutely! It's entrenched in our society and engrained in our psyches. But if we can identify it, then we can (hopefully) begin to seperate ourselves from it and start the conversations about how best to look after each other & ourselves.
The uncomfortable reaction I immediately had realizing this was a Ted about menstruation being given by a man speaks volumes to the issues he covered in this Talk.
I really appreciate your insight here! Centuries of of stigma, shame, minimisation & dismissal means most aren't willing to talk about menstruation openly or even with doctor. Hopefully, you agree that even though I don't have a period or understanding the lived experience myself, that shouldn't exclude me (and other non-menstruating people) from empowering others to talk about menstruation and/or their experience with menstruation.
Wow I mean I guess we should just be glad that how we're studying periods is changing but of all things to prompt it a mouse??? lmao that's pretty funny
I agree! A tiny mouse from the deserts of Egypt wasn't the obvious direction female reproductive health was heading, but thank god for them! Hopefully, the fluffy little things can teach us a thing or two moving forward :)
omg the stuff at the 10:30 mark is too funny. Why on earth would they spread that sort of thing?? Just to isolate and belittle women?? Seems so outrageous, especially the blinding children part lol
I had never thought about whether other animals menstruate or not. Interesting, the choice thing, that we're designed to become pregnant when we choose (ideally), as opposed to other species.
It's fascinating! Menstruation is a very taxing process, so only the 'lucky' few can 'afford' to menstruate and be selective or choosy of which embryo implants.
Aproximately 40-60% of this ted talk was objectively wasted on virtue signaling to those women who already felt angry about a MAN speaking and stopped listening once he started to talk about a menstruation. I know TEDs are hit or miss and not every ted talk is amazing revelation in field of science, but this feels less like informative talk and more like filerbustering so one can fill 14 minutes of silence with 5 minutes of having something interesting to say.
everyone being nazty in the comments get over yourselves and just listen to what he has to say honestly y'all wanna speak on equality and what not but get mad over a man trying to help people understand ladies business, that's hypocrisy
It truly blows my mind that science has come so far as to be able to measure and determine all those things in a MOUSE like that's crazy
It's one of the reasons I love science so much! Now let's hope spinys can continue helping us better understand female repro health :)
Yesssss finally some dang recognition and hopefully even some progress towards understanding what we go through literally every 4 weeks!!
It's about time!

Idc about his gender, he sheds a light on an important issue. Thank you for your work
My pleasure! Thanks for watching :)

Considering how many people are uncomfortable with this, I appreciate that you dared to make this video available for everybody to see.
Tragically missed opportunity to title this video Of Mice and Menstruation
That would have been brilliant!
Believe it or not, this was the original title of my talk, but I talked myself out of it! haha
@@dr_jarrod_mckenna Thank you for the insightful talk, Sir
You’re welcome!

Thank you very much! The more we talk about these topics, the more normal they become - so, it's over to you now!
Fabulous talk Jarrod! Honoured to be able to watch you in your element live. Can't wait to see what you do next!
Thanks, Trang ❤
Okay I looked up the egyptian spiny mouse and yes, it is very freakin cute
Right?!?!
Outstanding, thank you for this Jarrod 🙏🙌
Thank You, Dr. McKenna... It's about damn time that the ignorance is stifled rather than the truth.
Bravo.
Thank you for watching :) Women's health is a sensitive topic to discuss openly, but it shouldn't be!

Bam bam bam!! Thank you, Sir.
And thank you for watching!
He said “definitely NOT in menstruation” 😂
Studying menstruation for 4 years was not on young Jarrod's bingo card!

Frightening, but surprisingly common tactics employed by the patriarchy to keep men on top and women on the bottom!
You should hear the ideas wealthy white men have had about people with coloured skin over the years!

WOW
😮😮
Some name spellings are just immoral and there's no two ways about it.
😂
What the heck did I just click on
Something you didn't know about. Now you do!
@geobus3307 I still don't. I clicked off on it as soon as he started talking about mice's menstrual cycles 🤣
@@Coolness18304 what did you think he was going to talk about
😂
I just clicked on, too. I am looking forward to learning something new.
People who menstruated..so woman were excluded from it you mean ?
THIS is the comment I was looking for ‼️ as soon as he began with “cisgender man”as his identity, I was like: “where is this going?”
Correct!
You can be a woman without menstruating and you can be menstruating without being a women.
Ummm😅
100% he does strange things to animals....
Not sure i want to hear this
Then keep your head in the sand. No one is asking you to listen
