@Diana Hughes My husband & I are British. We lived & worked in Texas, USA for a long time. We travelled & met lot of different people in many different states. In our experience the relationship between Native Americans & African Americans is very strained (to say the least!). This shocked me & a couple of experiences have really stuck with me in a painful way. I’d never witnessed such brutal, venomous & overt racism in my life.
May I ask if you know what I’m talking about & if you could shed some light on the ‘hatred’ (that’s what it truly felt like) between peoples that I expected to feel some unity with each other?
The most extreme things that I witnessed came from very poor, ‘working class’ individuals.

I lived in inner city Manchester growing up in the 70’s and experienced a lot of racism. This was during the Enoch Powell era. No words can describe how horrible it feels to be discriminated against because of the colour of your skin. I was five when my mother explained how we weren’t allowed to play in certain areas because of the number of national front supporters who might want to harm me. That same year 1970, I was abducted from right outside my home and a guy who was a national front supporter, saw where I had been taken and saw the abductor sexually abusing me and found a policeman. This confused me as a five year old, people were either good or bad. Despite his beliefs this man realised I was an innocent child and no matter the colour of my skin, I needed protection. This being the 70’s it was covered up and brushed aside by my mother (least said soonest mended, attitude) I don’t think the police took action either. I remember a large policeman asking me questions I couldn’t answer. I’d love to know what happened to this man but have no idea how to find out. So how these people felt knowing they were being killed simply because they were African American I cannot comprehend. Recently there was a hoax call about a gunman in a Manchester school that my partners son attends. I saw the child’s face hours after it happened and the fear was easy to spot, he was totally traumatised by his experience. They hid under their desks waiting to be shot. It’s given me a tiny glimpse into how these brave people must have been feeling that horrific day.
Roof had no such humanity in him as the man who saved me. I cannot comprehend how traumatised those victims and their families are. He was evil. Pure and simple. To slaughter innocent people in a place of worship is horrendous. He has no compassion or humanity and while I struggle with the death sentence often, in this case I think he fully deserves to die. What he did to these families and his own family was reprehensible. I’d like to know why his family didn’t spot any warning signs when his friends did. I’m not blaming them for his actions, just wondering how he hid his beliefs and why the family thought he was safe to have a gun.
I do believe the gun laws in the states make crimes like this so easy to commit. I’d love to see the laws tightened and can’t understand why the checks on people wanting a gun aren’t a lot more stringent.
Love your videos Emma, and I appreciate how you help us to know the victims as people not just names. I’d love to see one of your roadshows! I also would fancy a few tequilas with you afterwards!! 💜

This is such an interesting story and proves that no person is good or bad- black or white. Personalities are all On a spectrum with very few on the pure evil side. The national front guy most likely disagreed with black people being in the country BUT would never sit blindly by and watch people be abused purely on the basis of their colour. We tend to dehumanise people we don’t like or agree with and this goes both ways.

      All happened. Double time.
Inflammatory....hmmmm. Depends whom is twisting it to their gain.

Thank you for recognizing these amazing people that had their lives tragically taken. As a black woman who grew up in the south and having dealt with racism from an early age, it's sometimes easy to think that all white people secretly hate me just because of the color of my skin. I know that isn't true, but it's still something that weighs heavily on me, knowing that there are people who intensely hate me and would eradicate me if given the chance.

You know just how to do it. I find myself getting completely engrossed and experiencing the horror as you describe it. During the Richard Djerf episode I had to stop watching because I could feel an anxiety attack coming on. And I couldn't help but consider that I was traumatised sitting comfortably listening to you describing the situation - knowing that at any point I could pause or stop the video, but imagine being a victim in the reality of such a nightmare and knowing that you are trapped and there is no way out. That would be a time when I think it's completely understandable to lose your sanity. I hope and pray that I nor any of my loved ones will ever experience such abomination.
This evening you were able to make all the heaviness considerably lighter by the constant reference to the hairstyle so I found myself chuckling in between the unfolding of the horrible crescendo.
Race based killing remains one of those acts that have frightening power of inciting hate and distrust amongst people who would normally get on without problems. I live in South Africa where as you well know we had a system of Apartheid until 1994 and there remains so much healing to be achieved. So the presence of individuals on both sides who for whatever reason are attempting to undo the healing and promote the continued hate is truly alarming. And although they are an insignificant portion of the whole, their ideas and acts seem to get more press than those of the majority who don't classify people based on skin colour, sexual orientation, religious belief or any of these supercharged topics that most bigots nurture and promote continuously. It's a sad reflection of our time that we prefer to watch drama and conflict much more than harmony and acts of selfless behaviour.
I watch true crime ALL the time. Writing this now I feel that I must add more uplifting and inspirational documentaries to the mix but already in the back of my head I can hear myself rejecting even the thought of rationing the true crime.
What is it? I could never hurt another being willfully, yet I'm fascinated by stories of people who do that without a second thought. Am I trying to make myself feel better about my own shortcomings by looking at others where I can say: "Even though I often procrastinate and struggle to make deadlines, at least I'm not a murderer." I doubt it's that straight forward. It will be very interesting to contemplate that idea and try to find the root cause of our fascination with murderers and other macabre cases. I've discussed this with my own psychologist and she thinks it's a desire to understand the human psyche better. I don't know if the reason is that inane. It would be very interesting to get other true crime followers' ideas on what it is that makes them enjoy a good true crime episode much more than they would a romantic comedy, or a sports match or so many choices available to us these days of streaming and catering for niche markets.

Years back I spent some months living in Mississippi, I met and spoke with a good few Afro Americans, everyone of them, without exception were the nicest, most friendly people you could hope to meet. I formed some solid friendships there.
Before watching this very well presented video I never even new of this case. I have to say that this sickened me to my guts.
What's strange to me is that man has been able to go to the moon and produce many unimaginable feats of technology, yet many of them don't seem to realize that the only difference between blacks and whites is the colour of the skin, nothing more.
These people showed him nothing but kindness, and yet he still killed them.
The sooner people move past this racial supremacy crap, then we might be some way towards having a world worth living in. Prejudice based on skin colour is as ridiculous as what used to happen in the days of the inquisition, you know, where people, usually women, were burned as witches because they had a pet or a skin blemish, or some equally irrational reason. I'm not PC or WOKE, I have no time or patience for them, that does not make me a racist. I just think for myself, based on my own conclusions. I use my own brain, I don't have to rely on someone else's for how I should think.
