This coast line reminds me of Okrug Gornji. You should meet up with Canada born, but Crotia resident UA-camr @ThisisBunjo. He's out there in Trogir doing big things and he already gave you a mention in one of his earlier videos. Stay blessed Gabe.

Gabriel, when you reach Rovinj, take time to walk through the park that is south of the harbour, past the big German hotel marina complex, down to the quarry where people do rock climbing and you can see cormorants sititng on the rocky islands.

I drove to Buzet from the Slovenian border because I had spent a day in Southern Slovenia. Up in the mountains on the border I stopped at a lovely cafe which I fell in love with. The drive along the river valley from Buzet to Motovun is absolutely gorgeous. Motovun was settled by the Celts, I didn't think the Celts got that far south, I associate them with Ireland and Wales. Whenever you see a stone sculpture of a winged lion it means that town was incorporated into the Venetian Empire during the 15th and 16th century.

Having been born in Rabac and lived in the old town of labin I feel that Istra is the best portion of Croatia. The old town of labin is defiantly worth a visit. Nice coal mine museum in the old town. Walk to the top of the town and you can see Rabac and cress. Best prosciutto is in the new part of labin on second floor of the market. There are nice towns along the eastern coast of Istra. Plomin should have the flowers that grow out of the rocks in bloom this time of year. They only grow in a small portion of Istra. Rovinj is still the best but crowded along with pula. The pula farmers market is incredible.

Gorski Kotar is so beautiful, but beware of bears...

You'll have a lot of variety to see and experience.
Istria is sort of like Tuscany.
Then my city of Rijeka, which is the European capital of culture for this year - 2020. It's an amazing city in every respect! Architecture, culture, people, open, welcoming multicultural tolerant spirit, happiness and carnivals like Venice, underground rock scene (it's like Croatian Seattle) and so much more.
On top of that, it is the main Croatian container port.
I'm disappointed Gabe actually went to Rijeka and showed literally nothing of it.
It is a bit larger city than others he had visited in Croatia, but it isn't big - population is approx. 200,000.
      Smaller than Split.
The city is an eclectic fusion of central Europe and Mediterranean.
If you're into island hopping, make sure to visit north Adriatic islands too, not just Dalmatian ones.
Dalmatia is typical Mediterranean, beautiful, colorful and vibrant.
Southern Dalmatia is where Dubrovnik is at.
North of Rijeka which is where Gabe ends up in this video, iz Gorski Kotar. It's a mountainous, highland, wooded area - sort of like a hybrid between Austria, Scotland and Pacific Northwest. Wonderful nature and great hiking opportunities!
As you go deeper into the continental part of Croatia, you get to Karlovac and then the capital - Zagreb. It is typical central Europe, Austria-Hungary type of architecture and loads of things to see and do, with one of the best preserved medieval old towns in Europe and an awesome downtown.
Slavonia - starts about 100km east of Zagreb, is like Hungary...at that point you're in the so called Panonian basin, flat planes, wide fields, very cool woods at the heart of it and a super interesting nature reserve at the easternmost part called Kopački rit, along the banks of the Danube, just to the northeast of the Slavonian regional capital of Osijek.
Also, another region people often miss, but is amazing, is Zagorje - to the north of Zagreb. It's a picturesque hilly area, a wine country and full of medieval, renaissance and baroque castles. I would say that is a must see in Croatia. Slavonia also has those castles as do other parts of Croatia, but nowhere is there such a concentration of them in a relatively small area.
Varaždin is a charming baroque city in that region and another possible point of interest might be the museum of Neanderthals in Krapina, Zagorje. It's at the site of one of the largest, most important, most ample finds of Neanderthal remains in all of Europe and the world...at the level of the Neander Valley in Germany, El Sidron in Spain or La Ferrassie in France.
For example: out of altogether around 400 Neanderthal individuals found in the entire world, 75 come from this one site in Vindija Cave near Krapina, Croatia.
Hope I gave you some idea of what is it like and where to go.
Welcome to Croatia and enjoy your stay!!

Gabriel this is a great video footage took in Kvarner, Gorski Kotar and Rijeka region.I am glad ,you covered that part of Croatia too, since it seams to be a bit underrated.Btw.Istria is most turistic Croatian region. If you have an opportunity, my advice is to visit Mošćenička Draga beaches, and pitoresque village Mošćenice above,Kastav and Lovran old town,North Adratic Island cities Vrbnik,Baška,Krk,Cres,Lubenice Lošinj, Rab,Mount of Učka with 360 degrees view (spreading almost 100 km around during clean weather condition),Istrian vilages Hum(official smalest town at the World),Grožnjan,City of Pula, Brioni national Park etc.I have to mention that I expected more video footages from Opatija and Rijeka.
FYI. Croatia has 8 national parks and 12 Parks of Nature.Considering it is a relative small country( 56.594, less then West Virginia), it sounds really amazing.

I just want to say that I love the way you conduct your videos. You show exactly what to expect and for someone like me who tries to plan my trips very carefully and down to the ‘which bus I need to take on that hour that day’ this information is essential. For example I had so many questions about the plitvitci lakes, where to sleep, how to get to the lake, what hiking routes there are, how many days I need. Etc. but with your video you shows exactly the map you even walked from your Airbnb to show how close it was. It is great. Please keep this detailed style of showing your travels because avid travelers like me would love and learn from it.

I would love to live in one of these Balkan countries maybe in Croatia. I am so sick of my own people out of spite, greed, selfishness and outright stupidity. Talking about Finnish during this Covic-19 pandemia plus everything else too. So begun to plan to move somewhere else after I get retired in couple of years.

Man Croatia is very different from the rest of the Balkan countries...Croatia and Albania are both on Balkan, but Croatia is probably more like Finland than Albania.

It is a very safe country to live in and sparsely populated, so you would be fine. Just stay informed in this few years before retirement because you never know what will politicians decide and if they decide to settle 100-200 000 "refugees" here, then it is better to stay at home.

Hi Gabriel, I saw that rental car a red Audi you're living large in Croatia. That fortress was a nice surprise and the town where the national parks are I'll bet many tourists don't wander too much in that direction.

Gabe, can I suggest something tasty.. to you. Go to the supermarket & buy a pack of Cokolesnik or Cokolino (various flavours). Get a bowl of cold milk, and mix it together... and Presto; you have Instant Chocolate Pudding before your very eyes....!!!
We in the West have still not been able to figure this one out... but yeah instant puddings are a real thing down there :))))

An interesting fact: Motovun (Montona) was the birthplace of race car driver Mario Andretti and his twin brother Aldo in 1940. The brothers raced hand-crafted wooden cars through the steep streets. After World War II Istria became a part of Croatia, a sovereign constituent unit of Yugoslavia. His family, like many other ethnic Italians, emigrated. They lived in a camp near Lucca from 1948 to 1955. The Andretti family resettled in Nazareth, Pennsylvania, United States.
As for Opatija (Abbazia, Sankt Jakobi), it was surely one of the most prominent coastal towns in the Austro-Hungarian Empire, a part of so-called Austrian Riviera at that time (before WWI). However, Opatija has the most Austrian (19th century aristocratic) scent of Croatian coastal towns in architecture as western Istrian towns and many Dalmatian towns were part of Republic of Venice once and have more Venetian style of historic buildings. It is easy to imagine 19th century Austrian and Hungarian aristocracy (noblemen) as tourists in Opatija.
