After using up a box of cereal, I recycle the cardboard and use the cereal liner to freeze food. When you think about it, these liners have to be air-tight and they're also durable. I use masking tape to seal and write the date and contents.

I like to find hams that have been marked 1/2 off on their "sell by" date. They are smoked and cured so the quality is always just fine. After dinner there is always a lot left, so I make some sandwich slices and cubes with the leftovers. I put them in quart-sized freezer bags and squeeze the air out of them. This can make several meals. Slices can be used in sandwiches and other dinners and cubes are used in yummy omelets or potato casserole. The meaty, juicy hambone is also wrapped in plastic and frozen for later for some delicious beans or soup in the crockpot! So we get several meals for one frugal purchase.

I re-use glass jars for food storage, buying products I would but anyway in large neck glass jars. I also re-use glass bottles, defending things from plastic or boxes.x

Every holiday Pyrex seems to have a big set of glass storage containers for cheap. I like them, they last forever!

Use masking tape and a sharpie to label left over containers with contents and date. Now you will not have to open containers to see what is inside. Also, you will never have to guess at the age and safety of your leftovers.

Jeff - thanks for the tips on preserving milk and sour cream. Here's a couple of tips: mason jars will keep leftovers for several days to even weeks. If you fill your containers to the top, and seal it from the air, it will last a long time bc there's less air exchange. Last week I had some leftover soup that had been in a mason jar in my fridge for 3 weeks, it was still as good as the day I made it. Also I've found that yogurt can be used long past its expiration date, often it's better.

It sounds like a gamble. Instead, put the leftovers in the freezer. To minimize food waste. Then the food keep for several months. I usually cook over 20 servings. Then freeze it in 0.5 l plastic cans in my big chest freezer. Another tip is to make bulk purchases when the onion and carrots, etc. are extra cheap. Then chop down and portion pack in plastic bottles and put in the freezer (do not put onion in plastic bags, the onion juice goes through)
