    When we got married, during the VietNam war, the ladies magazines always had articles on frugality. Woman's Day and Family Circle were bought at the check out stand and I still have a couple. One is. "150 Gifts to Make Yourself" and the majority of articles were on saving and money management "Fifty meals under 90 cents". I cut out all these articles and saved then in a file I made by cutting the lid off of a Tide detergent box and then cutting the sides down at an angle, and I poured over these articles. Newly weds expected to start with little and it was fun. There was an energy crisis, Jimmy Carter was telling us to turn down the heat and put on sweaters and the whole mindset of the country was different.

    • @TheFrugalMinimalist
      @TheFrugalMinimalist  5 років тому +5

      It is a much different mindset these days, Lanna. Those magazines sound like a lot of fun to me. I would pour over them too. Thank you for sharing your great story with me. I enjoyed reading it very much :)

      Very true! I was born in 65, and my grandparents were depression-era. I grew up with frugal thinking! These days newlyweds spend a huge amount on a wedding and also expect to move into a large furnished house right away. It was probably the advent of credit cards in the 60s right? Before that, it was a long process of saving every penny to make a purchase, and if you didn't shop carefully that money was wasted. Now it seems everything is considered disposable, and I have acquaintances that live in a cycle of re-decorating because they want to follow a new trend.

      @@jenniferwright8355 I also poured over those magazines when growing up and now I pour over the Internet for the same things, always wanting to learn....Facebook groups are so helpful as well as Pinterest and especially UA-cam...which also tells us how to fix things.....I have a 30 year old furnace.....at least 3 times youtube told me how to fix it.

    • @rosestewart1606

      Exactly. When we started out we had an old table somebody else there out and 2 lawn chairs. We had to use boxes to organize our clothes until we bought a dresser for $2 At an auction. It was ugly until we painted it
      My neighbour was 94 when she died 10 years ago. They put a down payment on a house and started out with literally nothing more than blankets and whatever else they got for wedding presents. They bought furniture over time second hand from neighbours who were moving and had that mortgage paid off in 10 years. And then they paid cash for everything for the next 60 years.

      @@notahoarderorcollector.dep8819 We had to replace our old furnace 10 years ago. It had been converted from coal but the burner went and it would have cost $10k to have it recertified. When the guys came to replace it they looked at it in awe and took pictures. They said it was more efficient than anything built today and apparently the guy who converted it was famous among the local furnace guys. Lol who knew? Our new furnace was the best we could get but nope...it isn't as good.

    I have given up cable for a year, I have no personal cell phone, and I shop for only certain things at the popular grocery store. I have two vacuums for the last 25 years, one was repaired once the other twice 20 bucks each time.....better than150 bucks for new one. Shoes and handbags, buy good leather and get them repaired and professionally cleaned. I have two nonbrand named handbags, thick leather for the last (again) 25 years. My black leather flats 11 years....and my black leather duster since 1987 looks stylin' (I had to take those shoulder pads out, though, lol).

    I’m a new subscriber and I think your channel is brilliant. I’m from U.K. and since retiring and the massive cost of living increase. I need to budget carefully. Thankyou for all these great ideas x one thing I do along with my best friend Zohara who is Indian and such an amazing cook is, we each cook a very large pot of anything we like and then swap half of our food with each other. I get a large portion of potatoe curry (my favourite) and Zohara gets hot pot (her favourite) xxxx

    Good topic, we no longer buy bread, cookies, cakes, any pre packaged food,( pancake, soup, chocolate sauces, custard, dips, chips, croutons, peanut butter, bread crumbs, chocolate bars, etc) I research online all homemade recipes and copy cat recipes and make everything at home. I'm retired and on a fixed budget so I have the time to make my own food.

    Shopping grocery outlet and clearance are the way to go. I’m very frugal that way and always look for a deal. I coupon a lot so I can save for fun things. Also be aware of goodwill type stores as some charge way too much and looking for clearance up to 80-90% at retailers saves even more. I’ve gotten new adidas at outlet for as low as $11 for a $120 pair of shoes. My three grown kids do the same, I taught them to save, shop deals and be frugal.

    • @TheFrugalMinimalist
      @TheFrugalMinimalist  5 років тому +2

      Yes on the grocery outlet type of stores! Couponing is amazing and can yield many great products for little even no money! I totally agree with you on Goodwill. in my area they are overpriced as well and you're so right you can buy new for less with some creative shopping. You taught your kids well and have set them up for financial success. Kudos!!

    I first saw the video of 40 Things I no longer buy part 1. I could see several things I would incorporate into our lives. One thing was the solo moulding putty I will be going to Michaels for today for my older school age nephews! It will be part of their Easter bag I give them. And one for me, I am a big time list maker and use pencils daily! As for paper towels I have always felt they were wasteful. I do buy the select a size but one roll can be on my paper towel holder for 5 months! I have used for years old kitchen towels which became stained to use as paper towels. I loved these towels because they were CuisinartI do buy Kirkland’s/Costco brand napkins because they are compressed into a 4 pack and are better quality them the 350-400 count cheapie brands for $4. Lasts us forever and I use old kitchen towels that are worn or stained. I throw them in a small bucket in my washroom and wash when it hits a certain level. In San Antonio we have a Hill Country grocery brand sold at HEB Grocery that makes the BEST BEST BEST kitchen kitchen wash cloths. I have stopped using sponges because of them. They are absorbent, yet wring dry great for spills. A 3 pack is only $1. 50. I have bought them for all the grown women in my family and they love then too. Thank you so much for sharing.

If I'm ever in Texas I'll try to make my way there to check those sponges out they sound like a great thing to have on hand! Thank you for your lovely comment...I love frugal talk! 😂 🙌

    That was an excellent informative video and I truly appreciate it. Oddly enough, I rewatched a few of your videos today and here came this video into my notifications. Made my day ❣️. I have one question about food items that go on sale in cycles. What are they and how do you know when they will come up for sale. Did my question even make sense ? It’s one of those days for me lol. Thank you for doing this video. I enjoyed it as well as learned from it ❤️

    • @TheFrugalMinimalist
      @TheFrugalMinimalist  5 років тому +1

      Hi Kimmarie! The cycles usually go along with seasons or holidays and I found that either bucking the trend or going with the trends can save money. Like I've found a lot of huge pasta sales in the late summer, early fall when there are heartier dishes being served. I've even seen one pasta clearance in January because I think people were dieting and not buying so much. Stock was high and expiration was closer than they liked I think. Meats I'll shop for either right before or after big holidays. Especially after because most people have leftovers and don't grocery shop 😂 Labor Day is always a great time to find sale steaks. Lots of processed snack foods like granola bars will hit discount stores pretty much right after school starts. Things like that! I hope this answer your question! Thank you again for your kind worlds and support!! I hope you have a great weekend! 💕

    Make sure your really read your auto insurance policy before opting out on the rental car insurance. I work in auto insurance. 99% of policies only cover the rental if it's being used as a temporary substitute, while one of your owned vehicles is out of commission. A rental for taking a trip or while on vacation is completely different.

      And a lot of people forget that an accident in a rental car is equivalent to an accident in your car, so if something were to happen God forbid, you would have to pay your deductible to the rental company and any fees that insurance refuses to pay. Don’t forget about your insurance rates going up due to an accident being on your record. I used to work in the industry and I’ve seen it happen way too often.

      @Sharon, you are just full of great information! Is this an inkjet printer and could you please let us know the brand and model? 😍🙏

      Epson is the main company to start to do this, but the others are catching on, though be careful, you still have to buy proprietary refills for the tanks when they run out, but it is way better than it used to be. the models are very obvious, they have huge bricks of the 4 ink tanks sticking out the sides.

      The ones by Codak are great too and are cheaper than the epson ones
      Just check for “ Ink tank” printers

    Just stumbled upon this channel. Wow! These are great tips and not the repetative, more work than it's worth, junk videos that are out there.
    My mind is blown on inverting boxes. I shop Aldi & Costco, so taking boxes is the norm. But they aren't sexy. This will help me feel more comfortable. Thanks!
    Great tips on computers and printers. In this age of tech and as our children grow and are required to use more tech, this is a great tip!

      I'm glad you liked the boxes one and hope it can serve you well! I like the ones that haven't touched food directly. Costco's peanut butters, jams and even soap displays have those boxes that can be inverted on 2 or 4 sides. I got one today that can be inverted on 4 sides and am super happy. Those are usually very rare 😂. It's the little things sometimes. 😃
