How to Keep Your Fruits and Veggies Fresher for Longer
Вставка
- Опубліковано 22 тра 2024
- Sometimes when you go to buy groceries, you get too excited and throw a little bit of everything in your cart. Fruits and vegetables continue to mature and, unfortunately, you end up throwing away a lot of what you bought because it’s no longer able to be consumed.
Proper food storage can save you money and prevent your fruits and vegetables from decaying quickly. It’s important that you take into account the climate of the place where you live because this can also affect the maturation of food. The more humid and hot the place is, the riskier it is for some vegetables. Here're some helpful tips to make your groceries last and stay fresh and crisp much longer.

SUMMARY:
- Onions can get rotten pretty quickly if there's too much moisture. That’s why it’s better to keep them in a cool dark place. And, if you hang them in tights, they can last up to 8 months.
- Place the stems of parsley, cilantro, basil, and asparagus in a container with water and leave them at room temperature.
If you don't want to put them in the fridge, then you have to treat them the way you treat flowers.
- Plastic bags aren't the best option for storing potatoes. Paper or mesh bags work better.
- Leave mushrooms in the fridge in a paper bag and add some branches of parsley, which has antioxidant properties, preventing the appearance of spots.
- No one likes soggy green leaves, right? To avoid this, wash them in a large amount of cold water and dry them completely before putting them in the fridge.
- If you've cut an avocado in two, save it from turning brown by putting a few drops of lemon juice on the pulp or by brushing the avocado half with a little bit of edible oil.
- To store freshly peeled potatoes up to 4 days, put them in a container full of water, add a few drops of white vinegar, and place it in the fridge.
- Citrus fruit should be stored away from direct sunlight, at room temperature, and in an open space. This will greatly reduce mold growth and the rapid spoiling of the fruit.
- If the bell pepper isn't cut, keeping it in a paper bag will help to keep it crisp and reduce moisture build-up, which creates an environment for mold growth. If it's cut then wrap it in a paper towel and put it in an airtight container.
- Don't store fruits and veggies near a gas stove or in an area that tends to have heat or smoke. Just like ethylene, natural gas is known to increase the ripening process.
- Apples are potatoes' best friends because they can keep all the sprouts away. But onions are not great companions for potatoes since they can make them go bad faster.
- If you use roots for juicing or cooking you can freeze them and they'll still grate quite easily. But their storage period will be much longer.
- Any green tops draw out moisture and cause carrots to go limp pretty quickly. That's why it's better to cut them off and leave unpeeled carrots in a zip-top bag in the fridge.

You had me running around the kitchen this morning separating fruits and veg, and repacking them...lol.....thanks for the info!
citrus fruit keeps longer in a fridge, they always go mouldy at room temperature I found.
Thank you so much. I am going to use every tip. I can't tell you how many decades I could have used these tips.
That was informative and I will utilized each and every one of the suggestions. Thanks again
I learned a lot about storing vegetables, I use quite often. Thank you.
This was so informative!!!! I've been doing almost everything wrong. Thank you for saving me money and from disappointment.
Thanks for all the great tips. 🥑 I just learned to first let an avocado ripen. The brown stem on the end will easily be taken off when ripe. Then you can put it uncut in the refrigerator to keep it fresh for a couple of days. I tried it, and it worked.🥑
Saving this video. Too much to remember. Thanks for the tips!
To avoid cut Apples 🍎🍏 from turning brown squeeze some Lime/Lemon 🍋 Juice on the unpeeled part of the Apple 🍎. Same goes for avocados 🥑.

Very informative and helpful. It'll be easier to remember if they are grouped by the technique of storage, like, those in paper bags, lemon, vinegar, etc.,
I just put them in the freezer before they go bad. Then eventually blend them when I make a protein shake 😋
You can keep cucumbers fresh in the fridge if you put them in a paperbag and then in a plastic bag. Check after a few days to make sure the bag is not too wet. If it is then change the bag to a fresh one. I've kept cucumbers fresh in the fridge for up to two weeks using this method. This also works well for zucchini.
This was great! Thank you so much for the information! Great video!
Thanks million from Kenya for the tips
Thanks Bright Side this vedoe was helpful, because I one of those people who overboard buying to many fruit and vegetables.
Thank you! I didn't know a lot of these.
For keeping bananas, (cut) each banana''s stem away from the common bunch. This will self seal the stem instead of using foil. Do this as soon as you bring the bunch home.
Bright Side coming through at the right time again lol 💕🌷
The Cilantro cubes is BRILLIANT!!

Awesome tips 👍🏻 thank you so much! 😊
New to your channel..
But I buy alot of stuff on sale and sometimes too much, great ideas! I love the idea of fresh herbs in the freezer then add when you cook for fresh flavor 😉!! Thanks
I've done the alum foil celery storage for many years, but I've always encased the leaves as well. I will split a stalk into two halves next time and try it both ways to see if either is better. And, yes, I can usually keep it about a month.
Thanks great idea
Thank you for the tip on Avocados and the Banana trick. I quit buying the Avo's because they are either too hard, or they turn to much.. but such a great health food

2:00 leave tomatoes on a counter and they last for weeks? Fruit flies normally appear pretty fast.
im confused about the ginger root. . . . should it be wrapped up to keep the Freon from mixing with the herb to keep it from tasting or being freezer burnt? and if so, then what type of wrapping.
awesome video !!
3000 thumbs up !!
Great video! I was wondering why my veggies had such short shelf life.
DRB are you a Christian?
Cilantro - dry completely when you get it home completely cover it in paper towel and cover it with aluminum foil it will last you 3 -4 weeks in the fridge.

Imagine your mom walks into the kitchen and see's you using her blowdryer on some greens...
So many unrelated comments. Looking for signs of intelligent life. This video will help me save money. I didn't know you shouldn't store tomatos in the fridge
Right ! Or put a banana in a bag WITH the Alvacado to ripen it!
I did not know either.
Me neither🤦🏿
Haha, my family has been putting Tomatoes n the fridge since I was a toddler. We put most Fruit and Vegetables in the fridge.
It won't make them spoil sooner, but the low temperature causes them to lose their flavor.
Thaaanks
Thanks so much - this is really helpful
I don't have to stress about Banana's going to waste anymore, thank u I didn't know you can freeze them 👍

Eyes of the cucumber is the cutest 🤣🤣🤣🤣

My mom puts a piece of bread in with her potatoes. Also when she makes a banana cake. She uses a lil bit of lemon juice to keep the bananas from turning brown.
Nice video
I have a one-up on the avocado trick boi, yes the citrus way works OK...Try: ‘After storing half the avocado, simply put a rung out paper towel that was drenched all up in the green and gently press the wet paper towel against the avocado. This was a ‘whim’ method but the BEST method!:)
Bvery useful tips
*This is by far the most random channel ever*
Hey bright side can you make a vid of how to pick out strawberry 🍓 easily or do you already have it
thank u Bright Side...additional know how !
Use produced bags. Store fruits and vegetables in breathable produces bags so they are able to absorb moisture and air.♻️🛍️
Hey! The new intro is awesome and fantastic.
If you don't find it awesome then I don't know what is awesome to you.
Harsh Verma do you like it more than the old one?
@@BRIGHTSIDEOFFICIAL Yes, why not. The intro of such an awesome channel must be awesome. Post more and more interesting videos on the ' Bright Side of Life '.
Can you make a video on numbers, I mean number system from 0 to hundred, thousand, million, billion, trillion, ........ and so on.
I would be very happy if make a video on that
Yesss u do have 2000 videos goodness 😱👀🤗😁
Clean clean fruits
Potatoe storage. Put your potatoes in a bowl put in a layer of paper towels on the bottom of bowl& add some potatoes another layer of paper towels. Do not cover with any lid. Change the top layer of paper once too wet. Keeping them in the fridge helps them not to sprout or very little. Pls make sure you use a nice size bowl. U could also use an disposable roasting pan layered with paper towels
I need a written list of all that to download. Most of this goes by too fast for me to remember more than a short period of time.
That's a neat trick but the one on the left is actually better .When it gets old it becomes sweeter and softer
wow... do you have any tips to keep vinegar fresh . looks like you'll need alot of vinegar to keep other fresh
I have always kept tomatoes and other salad items in the chiller drawer and they last longer than being out on a work top or in a cupboard. Have proved this time and time again.
Yes but i think he is saying they lose their flavour
...but makes the tomatoes tasteless ...that's assuming you buy decent tomatoes, supermarket buyers have emphasised shelf life over everything else, and taste has effectively been bred out. With tomatoes, you get what you pay for
Hi thanks for sharing now I know how to keep my banana 🍌 safe instead turn ripe in 3 days thanks for sharing 👍 🙂
Great tips for storing foods, it is very useful for Shanghai People who can not go outside to buy vegetables and fruits. I learned a lot from this video.
Is there anything else we can use to wrap celery and bananas with besides aluminum foil that will keep them fresh??? I'm very weary of aluminum foil.
Super 👌
Pozdrawiam 🌼
