Perhaps the most heartbreaking thing about this show is that a good portion of the studio that made this anime lost their lives a firebombing attack on their studio by a madman. As a studio, they are known for how fairly they treat their artists yet still producing the highest quality animations but the attack devastated their studio.
IDK man.. Besides the fire incident, kyoani just producing some mediocre anime except for this violet evergarden. They even kinda ruined Silent Voice movie btw. Oh and also.. they better make more of nichijou anime. Besides it's their most amazing anime, it's also much cheaper. Simplistic art. Except for the 3D effect scenes😅
I always thought my husband was terrible with words. After he passed, my son spoke so briefly at his funeral, some guests were rudely whispering that the thought he was disrespecting his father. But what he said so true, I can’t imagine anything would have been better. It reminded me of the last gift he left me… it was a silly pun on my name but to my son, his father’s gifts where always a reminder of who he is and what he could be. Parents giving a birthday present of the flower she’s named after.. just after she requested they watch over her a little longer. “No matter how ugly you feel inside, remember you are our cherished flower and want to watch you grow. Remember who you are to us.”
Ah. I see you wanted to cry alot. Violet Evergarden is easily the most beautifully animated anime ever made. And I mean nothing else even comes close to the quality throughout. Not to mention how good the script is. and the music. Evan call did the OST for this show, and its magical. (he is also doing Frieren's OST's and did My Happy Marriage. the mans a genius). Imma watch this in full.
@@shadowrealm3245 'The most beautifully animated cartoon...' The syntax was correct. 'Animated' is a verb' 'anime' is a noun. said verb was acting on said noun. Now, Im sure you gave yerself a chuckle in yer supposed knowledge, but since you were plainly wrong, why not just move along?
Praise be to Akiko Takase, the supervising animation director for the series. When the series entered production, even her coworkers at KyoAni teased her that she wouldn't be able to maintain the level of detail in character design that she had done for the novels or the trailers, but she proved all of them wrong. Another shout out to Evan Call, the composer for the series whose music made every moment all the more impactful. Make sure to watch the movie. The first one is simply a side-story, but the second one wraps up the main story.
I've cried in every single episode of this series, from the first episode, to the specials and finally, the movie. KyoAni truly understands human emotions and how to portray them through their exquite animation.
You guys may not have noticed but the episodes displayed and expounded upon the different types of 'love'. The idea that Violet is trying to learn more about.
Violet Evergarden does something that is VERY hard to do, and it does it WELL. What I'm talking about is the emotion "bittersweet" it's easy to make a story sad like it's easy to make one sweet, but making a story that hurts AND is sweet is a whole other level
I completely agree with you. And once you get halfway through the series, you KNOW that there a chance the next episode will make you cry. So you expect there to be sad scenes. But even if it is obvious what happens next like in episode 10, the way the story is written plus the visuals will make you cry anyways.
At the beginning of the story, we see Violet at a turning point in her life. Up until this point, she was a weapon of war, a super soldier, used by the military to win battles. Now that the war is over, Violet loses her purpose in life. And without Major Gilbert Bougainvillea and his orders, she doesn't know what to do. We see in episodes 8 and 9 how dependent she was on him, how he took her in, the 10 year old girl she was at the time, tried to save her from being used as a weapon, gave her a name, raised her, taught her to read and write and tried to make her see the beauty in life. At the young age of 25, he treated her like a human being, a child, which she was. He wants to give her a future, a life without war, especially evident in the scene between him and Claudia Hodgins in the tent where he asked him to help Violet in case he died in battle. He became her adoptive father, although she clearly sees more in him. He is not only her father, he is her mother, her friend, her teacher, her mentor, her superior, her everything. He was the first person in her life who was kind to her. But apart from the love Gilbert felt for his adopted daughter Violet, he also feels guilt and remorse. When Violet follows him onto the battlefield against his will for the first time, he hesitates to give orders. Watching her fight hurts him. We see him inspecting Violet's wounds when he wants to thank her for her actions on the battlefield and, due to remorse, he has to take a few steps to suppress this feeling. We see him unable to accept Violet's thanks to him as he buys the brooch at the market in Machtig and attaches it to her because he took her to the battlefield and used her as the weapon she was seen as by everyone else. That she couldn't see herself as a human being with feelings, that she didn't question her current situation as a used weapon and bluntly followed Gilbert's orders and couldn't think about a time after the war, frustrated Gilbert, simply made him angry, but in the end blamed himself for not having shown her enough good, for still using her in the war. In the battle, in his last moments, he told her that he wanted her to live, that he loved her and showed that he was willing to sacrifice himself to protect her. Violet is completely lost without Gilbert and only manages to keep on going through Hodgins' deception that Gilbert is alive. Taking Violet to Leiden to fulfill Gilbert's last wish and command shows the friendship and trust the two shared. In the course of the story, we also see how Hodgins becomes more and more protective of Violet, and is increasingly concerned about her well-being. The anime draws strong parallels here between Violet and Hodgin's wish for a child of his own, a daughter to be precise. Violet arrives in Leiden and only manages to grasp a new goal after she hears the words "I love you" again in the post office, to find out their meaning, the meaning behind the last words of Gilbert to her. Over time, she manages to better understand the emotions of others and herself, as well as becoming more independent and following her feelings. She realizes the weight of her actions in the war and the importance of her work so she is able to carry on to make amends. Nevertheless, the information that Gilbert is missing in action causes her world to collapse. Overcoming this pain and carrying on was a difficult experience for her. Ultimately, however, she has grown into her own person, matching her name. And even without orders to continue living with her own free will, she was able to prove herself as a human being even to Gilbert's brother Dietfried, who saw her as a weapon for the longest time and developed a huge fury towards her because he blamed her for his brother's death. The fact that in the two final episodes he is confronted with the fact that she is possibly human after all, as Gilbert saw it from the beginning and treated her accordingly, forces him to reconsider his behavior towards her. In the end, he has become the person who fights the hardest for a long happy life for Violet. With this development, with all the experience Violet has gained, she can finally formulate an answer to Gilbert's last words to her. Nevertheless, Violet hopes that Gilbert is living a happy life somewhere far away, that he is still alive, although it seems unlikely. The anime manages to convey this feeling to the viewer to perfection. Since episode 1, Gilbert's disappearance and his unknown life status have been used to keep the attentive viewer speculating. In the last two episodes in particular, a hopeful viewer is repeatedly led to believe that he will show up now, but never does. We feel exactly like Violet, unable to accept Gilbert's death, that he must live somewhere, that he will just spontaneously appear out of nowhere, but he never will as with many other characters before, be it opera singer Irma waiting for her lover, be it Leon waiting for his parents to return. In many shows, the element of a missing body is used to bring the character back at a later point in the story. Here it is used to give the viewer hope for the character's return. Like Oscar, Anne and Maria, we are forced to accept the death of our loved one, to carry their love for us in our hearts and to live on and carry on. But without the certain confirmation that the loved one is really dead, we cannot, a typical phenomenon of missing persons in war, environmental disasters and tragedies. The anime stands for me as a masterpiece in its exploration of loss, hope, love and the enduring spirit of humanity. It leaves us with a lingering sense of expectation for the return of a lost loved one, much like Violet's unwavering hope for the return of Major Gilbert. Thus, as the final frame fades away, we are left with the echo of Violet's hope reverberating in our hearts, a hope that transcends the confines of the screen and resonates with the universal longing for love and reunion.
I usually read big paragraphs but damn this is long 💀. I can still read it but my eyes hurt and I am not that interested in reading the whole paragraph about a fictional main character
This is exactly how I felt about the anime and I hate the interpretation (reality???) that they liked each other romantically SPOILERS and I thought him coming back in the movie completely undermined a lot of the character development she went through during the show.
I have no idea how many times I have re-watched eps 10 since a few years ago, lost count already. But every single time ... EVERY SINGLE DAMN TIME it never fails to make me cry like a baby. That episode is really THAT good.
Your reactions to episode 10 was what I was searching for. Everyone is emotional at that episode but I feel like your reactions were the most genuine because you guys are parents and I could tell you felt the episode at a deeper level than most. I love that both of you had different views on how the mother was treating her child and gave us points I would’ve never thought of myself. And you guys relating it to your own stories of your children was just beautiful to hear and made it one of my favourite reactions to any series ever because I think I cried more watching your reactions than the episode itself 😭 I also love how you guys looked so distraught at 4:37:10 and then it just transitions to you guys looking happy as ever the next episode 😂
I really enjoyed this reaction and the inputs the two of you had when discussing the epsiodes! I watched it over a few days. A few thoughts I'd like to share: 28:53 - "What's wrong?": My headcanon is that the way Violet was typing reminded Cattleya of a machine gun and asking her to type quietly was just a deflection. She seemed a bit panicked. Gilbertt telling her "you and me both" are also burning regarding his words to Violet gives weight to that, I feel. 3:34:23 - "Why is he calling him a hypocrite?": Gilbert's superior is pointing out that Gilbert's an officer. He's supposed to be used to sending teenaged boys to their deaths. In WW1 and 2, ostensibly, only boys above 17 years old could enlist, but recruiters often waived that requirement and boys as young as 12 (like Sidney Lewis) managed to make it to the front lines.
@2:01:47, in the Philippines, there is a gesture called a "mano" that is very similar to that. The younger person bows slightly and raises the elder's hand so that the back of the elder's hand presses against the younger person's forehead. This is something that one does for elders as a sign of asking for their blessing - be it upon entering a home, meeting them, etc.. One could (possibly) view it similarly to "kissing the ring" to show deference/respect to the one offering their hand. Though this is probably doesn't pull from that tradition, I wouldn't think that it's within proper etiquette that a princess does that gesture to someone of "low birth." It just made me feel happy for a princess to show a court lady such respect.
It's a beautiful scene. You're right, the power of the moment comes from the princess offering about the highest degree of respect she could to someone of such different social status. It's the reverse of the mano, in that aspect, where the respect goes to the elder. But the ingredients are much the same. In a way, the formality of the gesture is more touching, since it's showing that Alberta has taught her well, compared to eg a very informal/outrageous hug. It also seems to me the touching of the forehead symbolically treats the recipient as a parent (unlike kissing the ring, which I feel is more like respecting a job.) I'm especially glad the scene has such relatable meaning to people from different traditions (even given this is a 'european' gesture in a Japanese medium)
Fun fact: The country name "Leidenschaftlich" means 'passionate' in German, and the capital's name "Leiden" means 'suffering'. As a German, I really appreciate the clever use of these words for this story, since it is exploring all the different forms of love and passionate feelings while showing that there is always suffering lying within as well ("Leiden-schaftlich"). And on the other hand, the capital "Leiden" is surrounded by the rest of the country "Leidenschaftlich", like the suffering that is shown in the series is always recontextrualized and framed by a much bigger feeling of love. It is a beautiful show with gorgeous music and visuals and a brilliant story, and I really enjoyed watching your reaction to it :)
It's always felt a little weird to me as a Dutch person because we fully have a very historic and prominent city called Leiden that's nothing like the one in the show, but I do still love the wordplay
A true masterpiece made by the amazing Kyoani - RIP those who are no longer with us - , the animation, storytelling, music and Violet herself who imo is a visually perfect character when she gets her iconic outfit. Episode 10 has always been a breaker for me, it never fails to gut punch me
Y'all are adorable and obviously love your kids so much. As soon as you guys said you had kids and a daughter specifically I was like "uh-oh..." Made me cry all over again. :')
I love you guys! Please don't stop what you're doing. You guys are now my favorite reaction channel, and I wish I had enough money to support you guys on patreon
I'm so excited to watch this reaction. As someone who's watched anime my whole life and probably have watched and rewatched anime upwards of 1000 times literally. Violet Evergarden stands as my favourite show of all time. Beautiful story, art and music. It's fantastic. Definitely wish you watched the finale of the show which is a movie.
I'm a 5th- Generation US Marine Infantryman (2111), ARMY Armorer (45B) and Air Force Officer (Public Affairs, 35P1). I'm the first MUSTANG of my family (Green-to-Gold). The first Officer, the first MUSTANG, the longest service member (11+ years) , the only one that speaks 6 languages and 24 dialects. We killed Hussein, OSAMA, Mushafareff... We did ALL YOU asked us to do. WAR? War sucks, guys!! I hate WAR. "Violet Evergarden" addresses and expresses PTSD, anxiety, and nightmares better than ANY show I have ever seen. Silent abandonment and isolation as a child is so depressing and hurtful. Violet is an orphan. She was NOTHING to NO ONE. And the Military got her and made her into a War-Machine.
I remember the 1st time I saw this series. Beautiful animation, wonderful moving story, and a great soundtrack. I remember getting misty-eyed for most of this series with the exception of ep 10. I remember raging at that episode. That episode can fuck right off! I was a bawling mess more 20 min after that episode (which isn't a pretty sight for a grown ass 40 y.o. man)... and then I made a trip to visit my mom and hug my kids all that day and the rest of that week. It's an amazing series and ep 10 is an amazing episode... but it can still fuck right off.
4:53:32 the 5 sons You are thinking about are the Sullivans, who died aboard the USS Juneau when it was torpedoed during WW2. Which would make it even worse because she would recieve all 5 of the letters at the same time. After this event was the Sullivans Rule codified which provides for immediate discharge of serving military personal or no military service when there is only one surviving sibling in a family.
Omg yesss! I have been waiting for so long!❤ Thank you for the reaction, you guys just gets it, especially in works with emotionally driven story telling. Keep up the great reactions!
I’ve watched this series a few times over, but watching episode 10 with you two got me crying the hardest 🫠 I’m really thankful for you two sharing your thoughts continually here 🙏💕
Wow. I've watched a lot of reactions to Violet Evergarden, but watching yet another one again, I'm really surprised at how perceptive you guys are (well, mostly; the theory of her being an elf was a bit out there 😅). For example, when Steph immediately deduced in Episode 6 that the boy who was mad at the concept of the dolls travelling could be because he wanted to travel as well, that really blew me away. I'm really impressed. I'll check out more of your reactions, cant wait to see what else you guys have reacted to once i finish off the last three episodes in this video. ❤
As a child who losts her father the tenth episode hurts so bad, because for me and my family it was so unexpected and I'm sure that my mom felt the same way you described because even if I'm her fourth child, nothing really prepares you to grow it alone most importantly after such an event...I'm sure watching this video that you two are great parents who loves their children so much. I hope nothing as bad as this will ever happen to you two, but just know that if it does, seeing how big your love for each other and your kids is you would do an amazing job and i want you to know that kids see how much their parents loves them, i see it in my mom. So just keep on loving a mansion isn't important but time and love is. I wish you the best of luck as parents❤❤❤ (I'm 17 so i am still a child, that's why i think that what i wrote could be important to you)
You guys are so well-articulated and I love how you reflect on what's going on in the show. I truly love watching your videos and I'm so glad you reacted to Violet Evergarden. What an emotional rollercoaster. One of the few shows that consistently makes me cry.
Violet evergarden has got to be one of my favourite animes, its so beautiful plus i love the story and the characters it has to be an anime i can watch so many times i never be sick of Plus the first couple times i watched this anime i cried so many times The only thing that weirded me out about this is why they made violet and the major basically love interests but it does make sense for the time it is set in
Episode 10 made me cry but episode 7 fucking destroyed me. --edit Actually thinking about it I can kind of understand why my feelings about episode 7 might be stronger than average. Last year my toddler got really sick. She's fine now but I still haven't really recovered from holding her in the hospital and not feeling certain at all that she would pull through.
Just want to say I love your style of reactions and discussion. Pausing to talk about things and after episode discussions add so much perspective and insight. Steph mentioning Cats in the Cradle broke me open. Admittedly I was already crying from the episode. And then Wes talking about picking up your kid for the last time one day got me going again. Love what you're doing and I'm going to have to pick up a few of the series you've covered that I haven't watched yet.
@@wesandsteph2822 It seems that we’re at opposite ends of the Millennial spectrum. Sorry for making assumptions, but you do look younger to me. For typewriters, if you make a mistake then you might be lucky and the document isn’t so important so you can use whiteout (or the correcting tape they have here in Japan) to correct the mistake. Otherwise, all that can be done is add that sheet of paper to the scrap paper pile and start the whole page again! 1992 was a good year; it was the year Tenchi Muyo came out, the first anime I ever bought with my own money! Some good anime also came out that year 😜
I love your commentary for this series! I don't really watch reaction videos because they don't add anything to it, but you guys discuss thourougly about the topics in Violet Evergarden in a mature, real way.
I rewatch this show every year, it helps me be more grounded and remember to love each and every person and moment that I have. I know you both cried a lot of tears due to just the show, but you need to watch the movie. And I do mean NEED to watch. Welcome to the fluttering of emotions that was Violet Evergarden.
26:28 Before it was animated, Violet Evergarden was a light novel written by Kana Akatsuki. There are a lot of missing plots from the original that delve more into Violet's origin that the producers of the anime decided not to put in. This is because KyoAni, wanted the anime to be more human and relatable to their audience. Gilbert's brother, Dietfried, is in the navy and during an enemy encounter, he and his crew were force to dock at an unknown island and that's where he found Violet, who seems to be about 10yrs old at the time. Dietfried had no idea why there was an orphaned child on a secluded island, so he decided to take her on board the ship out of pity, but things went south when his crew tried to make moves on Violet. Out of pure self-defense, Violet started killing the men that were handsy on her and started hunting each crew member one by one. Leaving Dietfried the last man standing. The novel also hinted that she had superhuman strength and she later fought with a giant battle axe called Witchcraft during her time in the war. 1:36 Violet in Japanese is 'Sumire' which the kanji character translate to "sincerity and love.' It's also a flower use to gift as a way to say 'thank-you.'
2:27:05 - It was quite common in past wars that captured solders would be kept in POW camps(and before that as slaves) for years in extreme cases even decades until the two sides managed to exchange POWs or make a deal about handing them over(it was also common that POW died as captives and families never got a word about them)... so it isn't that out of the ordinary that it may take time for soldiers to get home even though the war ended months or years ago...
Saving Private Ryan is based on true event, and if I didn't make it wrong the story mentioned in Band of Brothers' novel. The way they brought that paratrooper back is not as dramatic as the moive but yes, U.S Army brought the only left kid back home. And this reaction is just one of the best VIOLET EVERGARDEN reaction, thank you!
Leiden is an actual place in the Netherlands!, although it doesn't have a port, it is close to the coast. I was pleasantly surprised when I was watching the series and suddenly I was in that city, and couldn't recall why the name sounded so familiar, only to finally realize it!
A Brazilian fan of yours here cried along with you. I saw Violet for the first time in 2019 (when I started watching anime) and it was such an exciting experience that I rewatched the series more than 3 times. Since I hadn't seen it in a long time, I got emotional again 🥲🩷
"It's weird to me to start a show after a war" you say at the start. That's precisely why it needed a story like this. Because war isn't over when it ends. Peace is the ideal result of a war, but it doesn't heal your wounds, or undo trauma, or erase scars. Not all of them tied to the war, like the writer who lost his daughter to cancer. But you'll need people who understand, and you'll need to convey the feelings you feel even if it's hard to put to words. The scene that always gets me is her jumping the lake. She was invested in a children's story for the first time, and she pretty much jumps the lake out of childish innocence. For the first time she gets to be a dumb kid, and she overestimates what she can do and faiils miserably. And the animators felt that feeling and made it beautiful. They're the kinds of people who animate days passing with a man manually lighting the street lights, just to pass the time. Yet they'll rip your hearts out in some of these scenes. And even small details... Like Claudia keeping the 2 other plushies that Violet didn't pick on his desk. Really, check his desk, they're there. He wants Violet to have every option, no matter what.
K-brott was a German military bread, it was used as rations for front line soldiers, it was around ten percent sawdust. it was described as hard and unpleasant requiring a liquid to be consumed, soldiers were advised to avoid eating K-brott unless they were to be sent over the fields as it gave you terrible stomach issues
1:30:00 My dad really likes growing irises, and recently he's been researching our family history and found out that one of the two possible origins of our surname is that it meant "iris" in Old Frisian (the other possibility is that it's the name of a town in North Frisia, so it's Frisian either way) 2:01:10 this song has a really similar tune to a traditional Māori one - like if I were playing them on a violin there are several points in each where I could seamlessly switch between them.
Damn, you know I've seen this show too many times when my first thoughts were "The music in this first scene seems off" and then they said something and I realized everything was pitch changed. Some oddly small details, the book that she's reading to Ann about the thief is the same book that she returns to Gilbert after she finishes it during the flashback where he's teaching her to read/write and speak. Also in the last episode up until after the air show she doesn't move her left arm because it's basically just an inert posable prosthetic until she can get it fully replaced.
Such an awesome reaction! Love the supercur format! You really have a lot of depth and perspective in your reaction/analysis that's really appreciated. Not sure if you take requests, but based on a lot on some other stuff you've watched, you make enjoy "Read or Die" (the movie, not the TV show). Can't wait for more!
2:56:50 Even just sudden disappearances. I remember a woman who's last sighting was a busy plaza where I worked. I didn't have a shift on the day she disappeared, but it's still crazy to think about. I don't even know if she was ever found.
Violet didn't fight for both sides she had it worse, her hometown was one of the places that was attacked when she was very young, so she had to do whatever it took to survive until dickhead found her and gave her to her brother as a "gift" where the brother did use her but tried to make her human
This anime is a very emotional inducing story for only 13 episodes. Though after the final episode, they have two more movies telling of her action afterwards. The first one will deal with the loose Gilbert story threads, and the second would be a look at a second/third generation perspective of violet impact on a former client.
i don't think gilbert loved violet like a lover, more like a foster child he was haunted by but wanted to love because of how unfortunate her circumstances were. whether or not violet loves him like a father figure or a lover tho, I have no clue and I think the whole point of her exploring the different types of love is her trying to figure out also what kind of love she feels for him
About halfway through this video, but I wanted to let you guys know that I love this show, ball my eyes out more and more as it goes on, and I am thoroughly enjoying both of your reactions. Also, you keep calling her a fairy in a WWI-esque setting and I can't help but think of Saga of Tanya the evil (Fairy of the battlefield, Devil of the Rhine); I highly recommend that show, it's so good, especially if you have any interest in war history, since there are a lot of parallels between the world in that show and real world history. I eagerly wait for your reactions to the 2nd special and the movie, they are sooooooooooooOOOOoooo good. :') PS: you are both so adorable, it makes me smile like a big dumb idiot :D
Episode 11, Gilbert knew him to write (he taught Violet) so he wouldn't need a Doll, the point of the series us that at the time in history many people didn't know how to write - thus they hired Dolls to write for them.
I'm sorry that I can't afford to subscribe to you on Patreon, but I'm SOOO thankful that you watched both of the movies! I look forward to if they get put on UA-cam. Kyoto Animation will forever be near and dear to my heart, so I'm glad you both enjoyed their adaptation of this beautiful story. If you don't know much about Kyoto Animation, I'd highly encourage you to look into them. They're one of the best anime studios in Japan, if not the best. I was super impressed with how much you both cried on camera... Watching and waiting for episode 10... but then I saw how destroyed you both were by episode 7, and I was like "oh no, they're not going to be okay." To this day, just hearing the name "Ann" can make me start to choke up... and the opening & ending songs always obliterate me when they come up in my shuffle...
Violet Evergarden is my favorite anime show of all time for me. It tells such a beautiful story of a girl who's whole world was solely revolved around the military. Then Violet goes on this journey to discover her own feelings and self worth, the main focus is the emotional aspect of humans, like our relationships with our loved ones and the inner turmoil the characters have. I really like the show cause it shows real life problems and situations.
People seem to forget that post offices where infact once ran by royalty, infact at one point it was one of the most serious lines of work, considered a branch of the military in some places
Episode 10 was beautiful. As a parent that Episode hit like a kick to the face You guys should check out "ranking of kings". God tier anime. Good stroy, plot , characters
Violet was a feral child living on a desert island. Early in the war, Naval Captain Dietfried Bougainvillea (Gilbert’s brother) was shipwrecked on her island. He decided to give her to his men to use as a camp whore. Violet disagreed, and slaughtered all of her attackers single-handedly and unarmed. Dietfried realized that she had left him alive because he was the only one who hadn’t tried to force himself on her. He found that she understood his language, and was fantastic at following and obeying orders, as long as the order was anything besides “open your legs.” After Dietfried gifted Violet to him, Gilbert both trained and civilized her. Because the men under his command, despite his orders, kept trying to take her, Gilbert eventually had to move her into his own tent, as she kept killing every man who tried her mettle, and Gilbert was tired of losing more men to Violet than to the enemy. Even on the eve of the final battle of the war, there were still men in his unit who would try to force her, but Gilbert knew that the war would soon be over and he could take Violet away from that life, so he concentrated more on winning the battle than on discouraging men who refused to refrain from tempting fate.
If that's from the book, I'm glad they left it out of the anime. It's still interesting context, but the story we know from the anime works great without that vile human trait in there
It's funny how they believe that Violet has a low EQ at first, and later on it turns out the only thing higher than her IQ is her EQ actually. Also, the Anime omits a lot of lore, like Violet's more detailed past, her possible connection to Benedict, the details of her relationship with Gilbert, how Violet was found in the first place, and what her connection with Dietfried is, or just how deadly she was already as a child basically. The anime also added quite a few anime original characters, and altered other characters' past history. Also, the typewriters. Though the anime takes place in an alternate universe Germany (The country and city names are a giveaway of that) the anime has its own alphabet which is shown on the typewriter keys. Someone already translated the alphabet somewhere online
This is crazy how this story is suddenly relevant now in my country. And it will only become more relevant once the war is over. For me in Russia frontline is kinda distant and I have a luxury of protection from being drafted. The moment it started I was doomscrolling like crazy. Now I don't do that but I still hear some stories. When you started talking about how solders of WW1 never wanted to kill each other and even talked with each other through the front line. It reminded me a story I've read recently. It's said there is randomly happened to exist a chat in a messenger where solders from the both sides talk with each other. And there they confirm they gonna kill each other in a fight. But they talk with no animosity. And then they proceed to ask each other what to loot from each other, you know, which belt kit is good and which night-vision goggles are shit and stuff like that. No hate. Just respectful "we're gonna kill you". "Same".
You Guys should definitely watch given next literally one of my favorite music anime’s. It has a great ending with an angsty storyline. loved the video watched the whole thing in one sitting 💖💖
The idiom the Major used to say “I love you” is used in Japanese only among close family. Gilbert saw himself as Violet’s adoptive father, though she obviously saw him as something much more.
This series was such a hard, emotional rollercoaster. Especially episode 10... Good for you guys have each other, imagine watching this series alone... 😂😅I cried in my room like a baby. You must watch the 2020 movie! It makes it whole and perfect.

😂 true, I was tearing up on the bus then suddenly burst out laughing because of that line.
Imma watch this in full.
animated anime?😂😂
@@shadowrealm3245 what are you laughing at, it makes sense
@@shadowrealm3245 /:) We in the west call japanese animation 'anime'. I bet yer a sub guy.
@@merlyworm you are right thats what anime is , calling it animated anime is like saying animated japanese animation
The first one is simply a side-story, but the second one wraps up the main story.
did Evan Call also do Frieren's music?

"Why even the enemies are good looking?" Lmao Kyo Ani at its finest
I was not expecting you to write an essay this long
Holy crap that was a long ass post 😂
I usually read big paragraphs but damn this is long 💀. I can still read it but my eyes hurt and I am not that interested in reading the whole paragraph about a fictional main character
You somehow summed up my thoughts about the end of this show
This is exactly how I felt about the anime and I hate the interpretation (reality???) that they liked each other romantically

and I thought him coming back in the movie completely undermined a lot of the character development she went through during the show.
I have no idea how many times I have re-watched eps 10 since a few years ago, lost count already.
But every single time ... EVERY SINGLE DAMN TIME it never fails to make me cry like a baby.
That episode is really THAT good.
its really heavy episode, im not surprised
Awww haha thank you!!
"What kind of bread is really hard and can't be eaten?" In japanese, the word for bread is pronounced as "pan" and the answer is "fry pan"
I'm sorry I still don't get it
@@mariamfall809a frying pan is made of metal so it's really hard.
I really enjoyed this reaction and the inputs the two of you had when discussing the epsiodes! I watched it over a few days.
A few thoughts I'd like to share:
28:53 - "What's wrong?": My headcanon is that the way Violet was typing reminded Cattleya of a machine gun and asking her to type quietly was just a deflection.
Though this is probably doesn't pull from that tradition, I wouldn't think that it's within proper etiquette that a princess does that gesture to someone of "low birth."
It just made me feel happy for a princess to show a court lady such respect.
It also seems to me the touching of the forehead symbolically treats the recipient as a parent (unlike kissing the ring, which I feel is more like respecting a job.)
I'm especially glad the scene has such relatable meaning to people from different traditions (even given this is a 'european' gesture in a Japanese medium)

I remember the 1st time I saw this series. Beautiful animation, wonderful moving story, and a great soundtrack. I remember getting misty-eyed for most of this series with the exception of ep 10.
Until Episode 10 i was handling this series quite well...
until 10... this episode is a good test if you are still empath or just a emotionless shell
I wish you the best of luck as parents❤❤❤ (I'm 17 so i am still a child, that's why i think that what i wrote could be important to you)
I’m so sorry you had to go through this but thank you for sharing such beautiful insight ❤️

One of precious anime out there 🤗 Violet deserve a happy ending and bright future
May all the staffs who unfortunately passed away in the arson incident of Kyoto animation rest in peace
How you guys reacted to episode 10 is exactly how i expected 😢😂 (im also a mess)

I really want you guys to watch Vinland Saga. The discussion is gonna be so interesting to watch.
God i will quit doing anything that whole day and watch their reactions. They're really good
"It's weird to me to start a show after a war" you say at the start.
I've watched it many times and still can't take it. No matter what, I can't hold back the tears.
1:30:00 My dad really likes growing irises, and recently he's been researching our family history and found out that one of the two possible origins of our surname is that it meant "iris" in Old Frisian (the other possibility is that it's the name of a town in North Frisia, so it's Frisian either way)
2:01:10 this song has a really similar tune to a traditional Māori one - like if I were playing them on a violin there are several points in each where I could seamlessly switch between them.
The Special should have been watched before Epiosde 5! 😭 But I'm glad, that you watched it, because it's awesome!

I watched this anime only because i wanted to rewatch it with your video of it. And i am glad i watched it!
PS: you are both so adorable, it makes me smile like a big dumb idiot :D
Episode 11, Gilbert knew him to write (he taught Violet) so he wouldn't need a Doll, the point of the series us that at the time in history many people didn't know how to write - thus they hired Dolls to write for them.
I've seen episode 10 like 15 times and it still makes me cry everytime
Looks like im ready to cry again...no matter how many times I watch it or watch someone react to it...i always cry
Watching and waiting for episode 10... but then I saw how destroyed you both were by episode 7, and I was like "oh no, they're not going to be okay."
To this day, just hearing the name "Ann" can make me start to choke up... and the opening & ending songs always obliterate me when they come up in my shuffle...

Thank you for your reactions! You are amazing
Evrything about this series is beautiful ❤
Love your binge-watch reaction! It's a great show! 1:14:44 Love the subscription ad XD
I just had that raggen bout to cry breath when violet was waking up in episode one. Bruh.
People seem to forget that post offices where infact once ran by royalty, infact at one point it was one of the most serious lines of work, considered a branch of the military in some places
Episode 10 was beautiful. As a parent that Episode hit like a kick to the face
You guys should check out "ranking of kings". God tier anime. Good stroy, plot , characters
love this reaction of violet Evergarden, new suscriber here :)
Thank you!!
He found that she understood his language, and was fantastic at following and obeying orders, as long as the order was anything besides “open your legs.”
After Dietfried gifted Violet to him, Gilbert both trained and civilized her.
It's still interesting context, but the story we know from the anime works great without that vile human trait in there
1:39:51 Hahaha, aside from maybe the age gap, I love that this episode flipped this expectation on its head
@@lorettabes4553 it’s my understanding that that is indeed from the book, and I couldn’t agree with you more.
Love your reaction. You should add your reaction often
This is unbelievably, heavy show. Even for parens or solo adults. You just cant escape those feels.
My goodness, this show tore me up. I just remember crying so much. I finally got to watch the movie recently😊
愛は相手を思いやり大切にする事。一般的に分かっていても再認識させる物語です。
Love you guys' content. Keep up the good work!
The animation looks amazing
I didn't know I'd be sobbing again with episode 10 with Ann and her mother ahhhhhh why
The idiom the Major used to say “I love you” is used in Japanese only among close family. Gilbert saw himself as Violet’s adoptive father, though she obviously saw him as something much more.
That is untrue.
"Aishiteru" is an expression of deep love, no familial distinctions. 😅
@@ЛилияЯмилевна it seems I was misinformed, sorry
