      In my opinion the points is more about the people we take for granted. It is hard to understand how important some people (or even things) are in your life. Even though they had everything with each other, they found annoying most of their experience. However once they lost each other, they finally started to feel that something is wrong. They begun to realize that these little things and friendships have way more meaning. They started to work together with the other friends, started to be more united, to care more. That is the beauty of Your Name - that it makes you stop and look at the things and people in your own life, and think 'those won't be here forever' and make you care for them so much more.

    This movie did WEIRD things to me when I first watched it too! At the end, I was SCREAMING "Please talk to each other!" I was begging for them to find each other again, just like you. This concept of forgetting precious things and losing special memories of someone, just like you quickly forget dreams or just like someone with Alzheimer forgets their loved ones, is so devastating, and this masterpiece of a movie conveys that perfectly. A true 10/10 in my book.

    Some aspects of the film are hard to grasp because of the lack of knowledge about japanese folklore.
    For example the reason Taki didn't write his name down on her hand, but instead chose "I love you" is because he knew his name would be erased just like his phone entries. "I love you" is a message of love and those are protected by the moon goddess Tsukuyomi hence they showed the moon in that shot as well.

    • @odorikakeru
      @odorikakeru 3 місяці тому +26

      That is a popular fan explanation, yeah.
      If Taki has written his name is probably would have been erased, but we will never know, and he definitely didn’t know. He wrote the live message because that’s what he wanted to write. Probably getting across that he loved her was more important to him than her remembering his name.

    • @odorikakeru
      @odorikakeru 3 місяці тому +5

      @@Pochitaman30 I’m not following your logic. At the time of the meeting there was no indication that Taki had seen the the things written on paper disappeared and understood that this would happen to anything he wrote (he had only seen diary entries on a phone disappear at this point.
      I’m not saying it’s impossible, I’m just saying that it’s too much of a narrative leap and Shinkai is too good of a storyteller to do something like this without some mention of it elsewhere in the movie.

    • @Karthig1987
      @Karthig1987 3 місяці тому +3

      No it isn't. It's in their folklore. Do you have anything in the movie against it? It's not a narrative leap. Even the flow of time and the cords stuff is in the show. Also body switching across time is acceptable but this isn't?

    • @odorikakeru
      @odorikakeru 3 місяці тому +4

      @@Karthig1987 You can’t use “There’s no direct evidence against my theory, therefore my theory is true” as an argument, that doesn’t make any sense. I never said it wasn’t possible or that it contradicts anything; maybe it =is= true, but we can’t substantiate it as there is nothing on the movie directly referencing it. So unless we hear something from Shinkai himself on the matter we have to qualify anything we add on the matter with “Possibly…” or “I think…”, which is not happening here.
      And as for using Gifu folktales, there are several that absolutely back up what you’re saying, and several more that completely contradict you. That’s what’s so wonderful about Japanese folklore: if you travel across the country and collect enough tales you can find the perfect one to go with any story you want to tell.

    I really like how you talked about learning generational skills. My family made quilts for hundreds of years. Our oldest blankets were finished during the first world war and kept at least 4 generations warm through thick and thin. But my grandmother didn't pass on her skill, and we haven't had a new quilt in our family for 20 years.

    Two other really great movies by Makoto Shinkai that I highly recommend are 5 Centimeters per Second and The Garden Of Words.
    Weathering With You and The Place Promised In Our Early Days are also good.
    The Garden Of Words and Weathering With You also take place in the same universe as this movie.
    I can't really recommend Children Who Chase Lost Voices and Voices of a Distant Star to someone who isn't a Shinkai fan and wants to watch his entire filmography and haven't watched Suzume yet.
    One theory about this movie is that Taki writing "好きだ"/"I love you" on Mitsuha's hand was actually what saved the people of the village as any other message, like his name, would have been erased by this supernatural power just like the phone messages and the memories. His love confession however was the ultimate bond between them, so it didn't get erased and Mitsuha remembered the importance of convincing her father of the incoming disaster long enough.

      The worlds of "Your name" and "the weathering with you" are parallel worlds.
      In the world of "the weathering with you", the world changes decisively when Hotaka saves Hina in August 2021, and it rains in Tokyo for the next three years. Therefore, if we assume that Taki and Mitsuha met again on the stairs in Tokyo in April 2022 (in the scene after meeting Okudera-senpai, Taki's notepad says December 2021, and in the scene when he meets Mitsuha, cherry petals are falling, so it is assumed to be the following year), it is strange that it has not rained. On the other hand, the fall of comet Diamato and the plan to evacuate the inhabitants actually took place in the world of "the weathering with you", so it can be said that the two world lines were the same until Hotaka changed history.
      In any case, I believe that Mitsuha and Taki are destined to be connected to each other no matter what world they live in because of the strong "Musubi" power that led them to save Miyamizu Town from the comet's fall.

    Excellent reaction. Good that you noticed the lore of the red string of fate.
    There was a Japanese TV show that had a segment on this movie not long after its release as they noticed its popularity among the older generation keeping it in the movie charts (despite the film being marketed to young adults/teens).
    They invited some older generation folks to a special screening and placed cameras in the movie theatre towards the audience, then interviewed the people afterwards. Needless to say, many of the old folks were in tears, and noted that the "red string of fate" (symbolised in this movie with Mitsuha's ribbon and the dream sequence at the shrine) which is prevalent in Eastern oriental cultures was something they experienced in their own lives - like an invisible bond - some people said they met their spouse/soul mate or found something they were looking for.
    Here's the segment with subtitles from that Japanese show back then - ua-cam.com/video/gTsafIFkxTs/v-deo.html

Japan had an enormous earthquake that killed so so many people on March 11th, 2011. This movie depicts how all the people in Japan at that time, wished they had some way to travel in time or switch bodies with someone to tell them that that earthquake was coming.
    It's also interesting to notice how the ending is 5 years after the commet fall, considering how Your Name was released in 2016, 5 years after the earthquake.

    Loved the reaction! I was really impressed on how quickly you guys became invested and started to come up with very solid theories! The ending got me again and I teared up with you guys :D
    There are also a few things worthy to mention about this movie :D
    1. Every single frame was drawn by hand (this is also the case for basically any newer movie from the regisseur Makoto Shinkai)
    2. Taki wrote "I love you" because it is a much more impactful feeling than just some random name. There was no guarantee that his name would hold any meaning to Mitsuha, so saying "I love you" invoked a much bigger motivation (he probably just wanted to say it real bad too)
    3. If you look at the earlier scenes when Mitsuha wrote her name on his body, you can see that the first stroke for her name starts with a curve, however, when she attempts to write her "name" on his hand during kataware-doki, you can see her first stroke was a atraight horizontal line, the same way Taki wrote "I love you" on her hand :)

    The way the film made you cry from the vague sense of loss it evokes; I experienced similar emotions myself, but I don't think it's because I'm male. I think it's just because I've lost family & friends to cancer & suicide. People search all the time for things that matter to them: purpose, meaning, love, friendship, (insert AoT Kenny speech). If you loved this movie, I highly recommend the anime Frieren: Beyond Journey's End.

    watching another reactors reacting to this, and i must say, not many people actually can be as fast as y'all to connect the dots about the 3 years gap. bravo!! also nobody realized about the time difference because the swap is like a dream to them, everything is fuzzy, that's why they only pick up stuff but not the entire thing throughout the movie like the dream that we have everyday, we can't remember all of them. love this reaction

    Truly a maasterpiece!
    The forgetfulness in the movie is also a metaphor for the intensity of emotions we go through during our teenage years, and while it seems like the world is falling apart because of them, life goes on, and after we get more mature, sometimes we barely remember those "world-ending" events like a broken heart or a crush that left to live on another town or whatever.

    I have had that feeling often. A longing for something unexplained and unkown... I have also had dreams that felt too real for comfort, which made me wake up with tears rolling down my cheeks...
    And in particular one dream where I met someone unknown to me at the time, remembered the dream so vividly, and later that very same person found me from across the world. It is the most magical moment I've experienced.

    I have similar hard to explain feelings of loss, but I think its tied to forgetting memories, and nostalgia for a time that I can never get back. Wishing I could turn back the clock to really take the time to enjoy the experiences that were taken for granted, and maybe even do things differently, just to see how things could have gone. I'm not sure if that's similar to what you were feeling Wes, but figured I'd add my two cents like you asked. 💙

Fun fact: the line Mitsuha was writing on Taki's hand is a motion she would make in writing her name. So she was going to write "I Love You" too.

    I'm not sure if anyone else spoke about this, but when Taki wrote "sukida" on Mitsuha's hand, we then see Mitsuha drawing a horizontal line on Taki's hand before kataware-doki (golden hour) is over... We see how Mitsuha writes her name earlier in the movie, but she starts with a vertical line going down into a loop... the first character of "sukida" (su) - has a horizontal line as the first stroke... Shinkai actually confirmed later that Mitsuha was going to write "I love you" on Taki's hand too.

    Your Name is definitely a movie best watched twice. There are so many small details that you can only really pick up on when you already know what’s going to happen.
    I’m sure people are already writing lists of these things in the comments section here, but it’s best to just watch it and find them for yourself!
    It may even be worth a follow-up video with all the little Easter eggs and “Chekhov’s Gun”s you found on the second watch through. I’d definitely watch that!

    I saw Your Name about 5 years ago back, mainly for the obviously stunning visuals but paid minimal attention to the story, however still I was captivated by the “magic hour” scene when they meet at the crater. After rewatching 3 times I still didn’t have the full picture, but I have an emotional dissonance and some attention issues so I never really got the story details.. but now I get the rest and see this is truly a hall of fame movie and arguably the best anime movie* subjectively of course. I deem steph and wes jedi mangaka knights, you have bested me. On the condition that One day you both must pass the torch to the most worthy adversary. Much love to anime lovers ❤ 🔥 ☄️ 🌅
