I love how in the second episode you see Frieren get a spell to make grape sour and you are puzzled, "why would you do that, ew" and a couple of episodes later you realize Eisen favorite snack is sour grapes. The second I realized is when i got invested in the anime
I just realize, it's almost poethic that Frieren got rejected as a first class mage by Serie that is in the heightest point in magic, as Himmel got rejected by the Hero's Sword, despite the fact that both were capable of defeating the Demon King. The messages in this show were so well scripted ❤ I love all your reactions guys, thanks for every video 🥰
It's funny that somehow, in the first episode, i get the nostalgic feeling-sadness when i see him died. How the F i have nostalgic feeling toward a character who i only see like, 15 minutes ago???
So Himmel is 15-16 when he recruits Frieren. They travel together for 10 years making Himmel 25-26 at the start. 50 years later he is 75-76 when he dies. Heiter is a year or two older than Himmel and outlives him by 25 years so he is roughly 101-104 when he dies. Himmel doesn't die early. Heiter just lived an abnormally long life.
@@are3287what do you exactly mean? It may be true that life expectancy in medieval times can be amazing, but I doubt that it is normal to live beyond 75+ in those times since medicine is not that advanced nor the knowledge to being healthy is improved by much as well
Is it confirmed that Heiter is just a year or two older? Himmel's comment after the adventure on Heiter being an old man now makes me think he is atleast 30. (because thats exactly what i said to my 30y/o friend when I was 26 :D)
@@are3287 I may not know about medieval times but during the later stages of the roman empire 30 was already considered old. Many men who focused on carrier married late (in their thirties) young woman. If the woman lived past the few first childbirth they normally became something like nuns in order to avoid being married again and became rich as the men have died around their fourties. Later knowlegde was lost and with it medicinal knowlegde, too. So I always just assumed the medieval ages had a more limited lifespan, but I could be wrong here, of course, since I didn´t really read about medieval times especially, but even if the knowlegde stayed the same it should be around the same age. To top it off the roman people I am referencing here are rich people meaning they are able to afford more "proper" medical care than others. All in all I believe to live to their 75 is already a pretty long life not considering magic or divine powers.
Serie, standing in the midst of her carefully tended flower garden: "The flower spell is garbage. Get the fuck out of here. You're banned from my magic treehouse for 1 million years"
@@eusouobrigadoafalaresseyou2513 And Serie does not even seem OLD old. She probably has at least another 5000 years in her. When that's factored in you are looking at a human lifetime seeming like less than 5 months. Frieren's decade adventure with Himmel was akin to a two week trip. And when she returned to catch up, what seemed to her as a few months later, he was almost dead.
1:25:28 In case it wasn't clear, the point Himmel was making was that the presence of one's friends and loved ones changes the nature of the sunrise; it's not the sunrise itself that is so beautiful in this instance, it's the smile of the people you're experiencing it with, and that was what Himmel wanted Frieren to understand at the end, and, finally, when she watched it with Fern, and saw her smile, she did realize it. That's why she said she couldn't see _that_ sunrise on her own. Two people looking at the same thing, but seeing something very different. What she really missed out on, was sharing that moment with Himmel in the same way she is now sharing it with Fern.
34:00 It's not that Frieren is so ancient that's not concerned about people. It's that the five years she spent translating that grimoire, while a massive amount of time for Fern's growth and development, is insignificant for Frieren. For Frieren, it's like if we had a friend do a favor taking care of our dog while we were away for a weekend. So Frieren didn't realize that Heiter was tricking her into staying long enough for Fern to become a proper mage.
We can assume Frieren is somewhere between 1000-2000 years old. So for her 10 years would be relatively 5 months human time. So yeah helping train Fern was like staying at her friend's house for a month
@@mysticfox1663 we know she is over a 1000. I doubt that's more then 1100-1200 years. If she was 1500 or more they'd say that, or if she was closer to 2000.
@@vegboylokesh7778 I doubt it. So far Frieren is a masterpiece 10/10 and this was true of Mushoku Tensei first season too but then second season happened and it took a nosedive. I'm hoping it isn't that for Frieren but there's no way it can get better than these 28 episodes. It's simply too good.
It's actually pretty good but they are coping really hard on the next year part, there isn't enough source material for another 28 episodes. Unless they either cut the episode count or add more original scenes it ain't happening next year
@@icebox1954 I can guarantee you the next arc is great. We will learn more abt demons. The story of denken and macht was so good. I'm sure you'll like it.
a tragic comparison between Frieren and Fern's mirrored lotus accessory is Fern's Mirrored Lotus is blooming(mutual), while Frieren's is still budding(one-sided). which is bitter sweet, because I think the reason why Himmel never straight up confessed to Frieren is so she would not be burdened by more grief after he died.
"Why does he [Himmel] seem like the main character?" What an excellent and observant question. I don't think I've ever seen a reactor ask that right off the bat.
Heisen and Heiter are some of the best bros and wingmen in all of history 30 years after after bro's death they convinced his crush to travel to the land of the dead for him
Frieren - to be cold/freezing Fern - distant/far away Stark - strong Himmel - Sky Heiter - joyful Eisen - Iron Einsam - beeing alone Laufen - running Etc. As a german I love how great the words work as names in this show as they are normal in everyday use. Also all the location have german names to. For example them traveling to Ende ist just the end.
"these mimic sucks" Actually it's Frieren who is just a monster, she use mana to protect herself like with the demon with wire. Anybody else would get messed up at the very least if not outright die.
Yeah the fact she was hanged by a garrote that’s sharp enough to decapitate was a good hint that the mimics just can’t roll higher than the AC she has when she turns mage armor on.
@@kagato23 I don't even think it's AC, she's not deflecting attacks, making them slide on the surface of her body or evading them, it's her DR that's straight up insurmountable for a lot of attacks.
The whole zoltraak reverse engineering sequence was one of my favourite parts of this story. It gave such life to the worldbuilding and just reminded me of the Americans and Russians reverse engineering German rockets after ww2. Also the fact that Zoltraak wasnt the only spell they reverse engineered from demons is astounding. Even the flying spell.
It’s also pretty scary how fast that guy was overcoming the shield. Fern really was needed, only one mage might have been overwhelmed. He’d have probably made it able to break through the shield in a year if he survived that day.
They didn't actually decipher the mechanics of how the flying spell works like they did with Zoltraak, all they know is how to use the spell but because they don't under the principles and theories behind it they can't tailor it and refine it to the point they could with Zoltraak, it's precisely because they understood the theory behind how Zoltraak functions that they were able to develop barrier spells that could withstand it
I haven't read the manga so I'm just making an assumption based on observation here. What Frieren considers 'Legendary magic' is considerably different from what most mages would consider legendary. Frieren being 'the' mage for the peaceful era, her values are skewed as to what valuable magic is when compared to other mages, especially Serie. This much is blatantly obvious. She values flower fields, mold and oil stain removal. To her, these are legendary spells. They make life better. Also, since these aren't typically the spells mages seek out, finding them becomes that much less common. So for Fern, who's spent the last half decade traveling with Frieren, walking most of the way while fighting monsters and raiding dungeons, you can imagine how sweaty, grungy, even downright disgusting their clothes probably got constantly. A laundry spell that instantly freshens their clothing is nothing short of legendary in Frieren's eyes. Also, consider that in over 1000 years, Frieren has not encountered that spell from a grimoire or scroll. That implies it must be incredibly rare.
When you live for that long, i would rather choose a life that i will enjoy every single day rather than focusing on being powerful. Getting to the peak of magic is good in the long run but will it be more worth while than to spend it with the things you truly care about. Frieren having the most chill mindset in the world is just perfection
Yes im surprised at some of the things they didnt realize. Simple every day small things are legendary to Frieren. Spells that actually seem very useful for battle she calls folk spells as if theyre no big deal.
It’s also about time. Legendary to her means spells that were lost. No longer comman knowledge because they were made at a time before there was a system to collect it. For her it’s like collecting baseball cards, and she’s not trying to get only the high value ones, she wants one of everything so she has entire sets. The obscure series with a limited printing but nobody cares about it? Just as important. It’d be like “oh yeah; I have a Willie Mays rookie card but look at this! I just got this 1957 literally who for $50! These are never sold online!” And she’s clearly prouder of acquiring that one because it wasn’t just winning a bid at the auction, this required actual legwork perusing random flea markets.
@@Pochitaman30 I mean it's probably worth it if it means you won't be killed, plus for Frieren and Serie their lives are so long that the time spent increasing their power is inconsequential
The reason why Heiter lived for so long is because people that use Holy magic in this world are pretty much Saints, they have the protections given to them like resistance to poisons, mind control, paralizys, etc. so they have natural long lives.
A little late but to add to your point, Heiter's case was special, it's later stated he was so loved by the Goddess he is completely immune to Curses; he was probably the most blessed individual in the continent.
@@KelapaWibu Blessed in the sense that the Goddess favors him almost to an unfairly point(Not the talented way). He's basically the definition of "God has his favorites" hahaha Himmel pulled the elf even while dead, but Heiter pulled the Goddess so I think he wins that one xd

Being parents, you probably notice one important theme of this show - the passage of life. This is shown through hidden mother-daughter like relationship pased from Serie to Flamme, and Flamme to Frieren, and Frieren to Fern. From all the human students, Flamme is the only one raised by Serie from a little girl, and you can easily picture the conflict between a social-distant elf with too much pride and a rebellious teenage human foster daughter. I'd say Serie must felt human teenager are 10x scarier than the Demon King :( Their different perspective on how/what/who should use magic finally lead two seperate pathes of the mother and the daughter. However, when Friren delivered the will of Flamme to Serie and Series threaded the will into pieces with disapprovement, Friren told Serie that Flamme still want to tell Serie her dream has come true (9:33:34), this is a super important moment. The hidden message is like "Mom, even I choose a different path to live, I've achieved my dream, so please do not feel sad or weep for me". This moment actually breaks Serie's inner walls of denial and the first time, maybe start to agree her daughter is doing something right, somthing even better than she expected. This also leads the next scene of Serie asking Frieren to take a short walk, to remember and relive the mother-daughter relationship in the anime. After 1000 years passed (As Serie mentioned this is like human put decision off to next month or so), Serie finally fullfilled Flamme's final wish - continue Flamme's work to educate human mages. She walked into human world, Found the Continental Magic Association, and taking more human students than ever - and create a field of flower with magic during interview those 1st class mages-to-be at 3rd test (Ep28), to honer the wishes of the only and very first human daughter she ever had, maybe in a whim of thought, but never regret to.
To clarify at around 9:42:20 ordinary offensive magic that basically every new mage learns is the modified version of Zoltraak. Do not forget Frieren was the one contributing most to the analysis and development of the spell. There for Fern is not using an even more modified version of Zoltraak because ordinary offensive magic is already demon killing magic. She is just using that one spell so well and fast most other "normally" trained mages don't know how to counter such berrages. They can block it for a while but counter attacking is really hard. Besides that isn't even more genius of Frieren to modify Zoltraak to be specifically demon killing magic and it to become the most generic and commen spell humanity has seen for long time. Meaning most mages have at least one kind of spell they can rely on while fighting demons. Of course it is not a must but the sheer thought of that is giving me goosebumps.
There's also a beautiful asymmetry. Demons spend their lives perfecting one form of magic, taking pride in the artistry of the form they pick. And Frieren just helps build a bread 'n butter Magic Missile spell that you can just spam to defeat incredibly powerful demons. It's taking an armoured, noble knight down with spades and pitchforks.
also, one thing to add is that defensive magic takes a huge toll in mana. Way more than zoltrak. Ehre lost because she had to use a lot of mana to create a lot of shields to stop Ferns barrage. Even fern gets tired if she has to do a full coverage shield.
There is alot of information in the way the stories are told, many missed it. For ep 26, the story is told about Ublett slicing the first-mage, its an emphasis of the power to perfectly visualize and outcome, which is the pinnacle of magic. It happens even without mana, when Frieren's clone stared down to Fern, it was 100% visualization that blasted her away. If you catch what Fern said: "I dont sense any mana, i dont recongise this as a magic attack." then she realized her intense stare was the "super-human" visualization that Sense was describing Ubelt's cutting of cloth perfectly and called it the pinncale of magic but very unlike her personality to be that extreme. For Serie, comes off two stories. One being Flamme's comment that she cannot defeat the Demon King cause she cannot visualize herself in a peaceful era. As Serie said, visualization is the basis of magic. In the scene where Series and Frieren was talking at the cliff, Series asked Frieren to only die to the Demon-King or Human Mage (her perspective of combat) but Frieren said she cant wait to see all the new spells during the era of humans (Peaceful). As such Serie values and mental revolve around creating the best Battle Mage, that why she said none of her student's ever come close to her or surpass her, and seem cold to them. But in fact, she is a loving teacher, never once she forgetten her student's and their signature spells, but she doesnt know how to express it as it conflicts with her ideology of creating the perfect mage. You can see this at Serie talking to Ubelt, she passed her without saying a word, she has the perfect visualization. The concept of first-class mages was Flamme's dream, despite saying humans dying too quickly, Serie still took up the dream on her shoulders.
Sousou no Frieren's author is actually a woman, Kanehito Yamada! Like FMA, I feel like the writer being a woman gives her a different insight than most of her male peers, and it really adds to the work they make
2:58:13, nice note for the Japanese in this (keep in mind this is from what I have heard): the way she counts in Japanese is what you do for objects/animals, NOT people. This is to further emphasize that she sees demons as "other"
The series is rather fun in that regard. The Japanese title for the series is a wordplay. _Sousou no Frieren_ can either mean Frieren at the Funeral or Frieren the Mourner. But it can also mean Frieren the Gravedigger or Frieren the Slayer, depending upon context. Ambiguity can be a lot of fun sometimes.
Not many reactors manage to see through Serie. She's my favourite character in this series due to how layered her characterisation is. Most reactors I have seen thought her petty and even evil. Most of them thought she kicked Frieren solely on a personal grudge. They did not consider that she might be a prideful tsundere who spent the whole show lying to herself or that there might be more to being a first class mage than raw power, such as mindset and values. The way I understood Serie, her extreme age (she's lived during the Mythical Era, when Goddess still visited the world, so she might be as old as Kraft, or even older) makes her lonely, bitter and gives her an extreme sense of pride that does not allow her to bend her thinking, admit weakness or be honest with herself in general. She cares about every single one of her students and she cares about Frieren too. It is not that she fails Frieren cause she only thinks magic to be a tool for killing. Rather she thinks magic is something that one should dedicate their entire existence to. It is a majestic and terrifying force that should be given appropriate respect and reverence and not be used as a toy, for frivolous or insignificant purposes. She also despises when mages do not live up to their potential. This is why she dislikes Frieren. Serie (like Flamme) could never defeat the Demon King despite being so much stronger than even Frieren. That's because she thinks conflict and war make magic prosper and she cannot imagine a peaceful era so different from all the thousands of years she's lived until now. And as a mage, what cannot be imagined cannot be. Also, it is implied even in the manga that Serie's suppressed mana is on the same level as Frieren's unsuppressed mana. She's not called the mage closest to Goddess for nothing. She's just that much older. Major props to you guys for seeing Serie as the author intended her to be seen.
@@XFizzlepop-Berrytwist She certainly derives a petty enjoyment from it. But I am convinced that despite the petty grudge, if she genuinely believed that Frieren deserved the First Class Mage title, she would have passed her, like she did Fern. Serie respects magic too much to put her personal grudges into it. Even Frieren herself believes that. Had Frieren given a battle spell as her favourite spell when Serie asked her, I believe she might have gotten passed. But Frieren was like "Nope, I still don't care about the height of magic or fulfilling my potential, I wanna plant flowers instead!", so she got a fail. The 1000 year ban though, that was just pettiness and injured pride.
@@Aznarel Yeah the 1,000 year ban definitely was. Haha. I mean I could get maybe like a 10 or even 100 year ban. Its kinda nothing to Frieren but a thousand, even to her would be sorta something. Regardless though, Frieren is probably one of the top mages of the world, to not say she couldnt be a first class is a bit lame. Like yeah does she live up to the potential of a mage? Maybe not exactly, she herself calls collecting magic a hobby over any strong desired passion like most people do. I kinda get the argument I suppose that Frieren may not be a true mage in the sense of the word, but she definitely has the skills and knowledge to be considered a top mage.
@@XFizzlepop-Berrytwist I suppose so. Frieren certainly has the skill for a first class mage, but she lacks the mindset. Honestly, even Fern is more serious than her master. You can't be the symbol of power for the continent if you get randomly sidetracked searching for a flower for a year. First class mage isn't just about raw power. Denken has a monologue about it at some point (I think its during the First test) Also, those that were failed during the Third test weren't so due to being weak mages. Their psychology was tested, not mana volume.
Serie is WAAAAY older than both Frieren and Kraft. She lived throught the Mythical Era, a prehistoric time when The Goddess was still roamed the world. Like they said, she is someone who is near omnipotence and omniscience. But, it's still a mystery why she didn't confront the demons herself tho. Instead she let her disciples handled them.
It is probably because it isn't fun for her to fight small fry. She didn't fight the demon king because killing him would bring peace, which she didn't want.
@@Good_Hot_ChocolateThere is still an interesting debate regarding whether she doesn't want to or couldn't fight the demon lord. Some believe that Serie could not kill the Demon Lord precisely because she cannot envision a world at peace. We all know how important visualisation is to a mage.
@@TengouX Its an interesting thought, but I don't think it can be realistically argued she couldn't beat the Demon King in a practical sense.. Even she scoffs at the idea when Flamme doesn't word it properly and implies that for a second. To me, the distinction is pretty clear, that she doesn't want to live in a peaceful world because she can't imagine a peaceful world being interesting, and since defeating the Demon King would lead to that, she *doesn't want* to kill him. I.e. I think she avoids fighting him because she simply doesn't want him to die, not that she *couldn't* imagine defeating him if she decided to.
It's insinuated by Flamme that no one who enjoys battle could defeat the Demon King. I suspect it was a crucial condition. Maybe the Demon King could feed of that feeling and it's what made him extra strong? Like some kind of special ability.
@@purple66666 "It's insinuated by Flamme that no one who enjoys battle could defeat the Demon King." Don't quote things without context. She said this when she was talking to Serie. And what was Serie's response? She snapped back whether Flamme thought she was weaker than the Demon King. The answer was an implicit no; Flamme rephrased her statement to refer to no desire to live in a peaceful world. It is FAR more thematic to Frieren's story for this to be a victory brought by those who desired peace, and aligns perfect with what we know (Flamme quoting both herself and Serie as too defined by battle to truly want the Demon Kings death themselves), and it is thematic only because those with the power didn't want to. Giving the Demon King some sort of OP ability where he gets exponentially stronger if those fighting him don't truly want him dead (to justify when Serie of all people couldn't do it) runs completely counter to what we know about the magic system, because imagination only ever affects the person themselves. The problem, based on the magic system, should stem from Serie and Flamme's imagination themselves (as we are told) and apply to anyone theoretically, rather than a special Demon King exclusive power.
I adore how much you read the characters so well, you guys are such amazing reactors, paying attention to not only the show but the details it leaves to the viewer's to speculate and answer for themselves. I also like how you incorporate your experiences in your talks, makes it much more relatable
This is one of the better reactions I’ve ever seen someone do for a show. You guys always seemed to ask questions or make predictions in the exact way the show intends for the watcher to think. Major props 👍
Regarding Himmel having an apprentice -- I don't know what happens later in the manga, maybe he does, maybe he doesn't. But from what we've seen so far, I like to think of Frieren herself as Himmel's apprentice. She learned quite a bit about adventuring from him (picking up habits like 100% completing dungeons) and also learned a lot about social interaction and connecting emotionally with people.
to answer your question, NO in the manga there has been no indication that Himmel had an apprentice. And the characters are so far north I doubt we will meet one. But, who knows what we may learn in a flashback. But I would accept your point on Frieren. The clearing the dungeon stuff was hilarious.
friendly reminder that himmel was such a gigachad, that every single demon was so afraid of him, that they only tried to fight humanity again after old man himmel died. also some information about the fight with fern vs lügner and stark vs linie: why fern is faster than frieren? the answere here is: she only has one attack spell. when frieren fights, she subconciously always thinks about what is the best spell to use in that situation, making her slightly slower. on top of this, zoltrak has a fast casting time, making it a perfect spell for spamming. because of those things, fern is an extremly fast attacker. on the other side, Linies power is realy strong because she could always use the best fighting style to overpower her opponent. but as mentioned, demons are proud and arrogant, so she tried to beat stark with his own technique. the only time when he gut seriously inquired was, when she got an overhead swing on him, so she can use the weight of the axe to hit a powerfull blow. but otherwhise, she doens't have the muscle to realy take advantage of the fighting style of eisen. so when stark says her attacks have no weight behind it, that is literal: she has not enough power to use this axe to his full extend and this gets her killed in the end. her swing was to weak to realy injure stark but in return, he got a clear hit will full power on her, killing her in one hit. if she would have used the spear or sword style instead, a quick thrust would have killed stark here. something else I want to mention is about frierens antique necklace: everyone mentions that it is basicly antique and that is because it is. remember, that frieren stayed at the same place after flamme died and she never felt bothered to get a new certificate because "it is always changing". so her proof of her magehood is from 1k years ago when she was flammes aprentice. flamme herself is considered a fairy tale when himmel was alive. so obviously noone knows about frierens amulett
that or he aged normally and Heiter was just using divine magic to keep rejuvenating himself prolonging his aging. both of them were 16 when they started the journey. they came back 10 years later which would make them both 26. 50 years later himmel died at 76 and 24 years after Himmel, Heiter followed suit at 100 (wow ok using divine spells to keep him up probly stands)
@@gethina-come7885 Yeah but him being soo OP he would've probably lived longer if not that horn. Being around that mist overtime probably fucked him up. Heiter probably would've like longer too if he wasn't drinking all the time.
@@malacoda9421 here's my thoughts about it tbh, the horn likely didn't do shit to Himmel. It's far more likely the difference between their lifestyles. Even in his old age, Himmel could still be seen having been present in the village where Qual was sealed at, which highly implies that Himmel likely didn't stop being an adventurer after he defeated the Demon King. While Heiter likely stayed in the Holy City as a Bishop, he likely didn't stress out his body, that combined with being a priest beloved by the Goddess (who seems to have a tangible power) likely extended his life. Himmel on the other hand likely continued going around the continent as an Adventurer, killing monsters, inspecting the problems that they weren't able to solve back then, and he'd have done it alone compared to when he did it with a Party, likely stressing out his body far more than Heiter would have, just like how working your body for 50 years straight IRL will end up breaking it down.
I have not seen enough people talk about this. Not sure why Serie would ever surpress her mana to begin with, since it seems like a "mockery of magic" in most ppls eyes. But Serie strikes me as someone who, if she decides to do something, does it right. So she probably can't surpress her mana more than that, which is already way stronger than Frierens. Serie is a fucking Monster. It's probably no exaggeration to call her close to being a god.
@@Nivin_Frostgaze Supression of mana is about 90% of your total capacity, when mastered. But to reach such a level takes a Long time to achieve. Serie and Frieren both had the time to reach that state. That said...I don't think that Serie would like to be called a 'Goddess' ...after all...her entire motivation for reaching the very pinnacle of magic...was to 'create miracles' of her own, rather than relying on the 'Goddess' to do so. Im not sure why she despises the gods so much, but whatever the reason, it motivates her to be stronger than any other mage in history.
@@Nivin_Frostgaze Serie can completely suppress her mana to the point that even a demon stronger than Frieren cannot detect it at all. You will see it in the next arc. The 1/10 mana suppression technique is used because completely suppressing mana all the time is exhausting. Therefore, 1/10 is the best ratio to suppress mana continuously.
Given that Magic originally began as a Demon only thing before it was adopted for humans to use in combat against demons, makes sense that spells that have nothing to do with combat entirely are alot more rarer then spells that do. Likely folk magic is considered to be all spells that don't have anything to do with combat while legendary spells are considered based on how many people use it.
@@whohawks ohh, I also like these two, I think 86, Violet Evergarden, and Frieren is a good example of really good adaptation. People who working on it definitely put a lot of care and love to make them a masterpiece of adaptation 😇

YEEEEEEES. I've watched basically a dozen people react to this show and I was so waiting for your guys to drop it as well. it's an emotional masterpiece and you guys are one of my favorite reactors.
6:00:21 If you look back at the early episodes, it seems like Fern came from Noble family. My theory is that the reason she is talented in magic because of her lineage.
You asked why the writers would tell us about Frieren's ability to suppress mana before fighting Aura, instead of pulling off the surprise twist in combat. I believe they didn't want it to feel like a cheap cop out but instead instead build mystery and respect for Frieren. They changed the question from "How will Frieren get out of this?" with perceived danger to "We know she's going to win and how, but HOW MUCH stronger is she?" I love this anticipation.
10:12:04 one thing’s for sure. Frieren was already recognized as a great mage. remember during the exam when Sense revealed her name and the man says “so she’s the last great mage”. and the fact that no one knows about the holy emblem of hers maybe because it was Flamme who created that recognition, and remember when Flamme told Frieren to remain lowkey until she defeated the Demon King.
One thing I love about this anime is how it gives you information that causes the viewer to ask a certain question, and then answers that question shortly there after. Weather it be directly though dialogue in the show or through a "show and don't tell" form that makes you guess what the characters purpose or motivation is behind their actions. ie - Ferns birthday - How can Frieren kill Qual even though the hero's party could only seal him 80 years ago. It's great story telling.
I absolutely ADORE your reactions. I think you're one of the best people to watch as they dive in and learn to love an anime as good as Frieren. Also LOVE your analogies and linking to your own lives. One thing you missed: Whats the significance of the sour grapes spell. Watch it again! 😉 Stark has insane strength because thats what he was lacking when his village was destroyed. Fern has insane speed because she had to learn to be a mage before Heiter died. I love the parallels here. 😉
Frieren is considered relatively young in the age of Elves. Serie and Kraft are legit ancient Elves that had existed since the Mythic/Mythology Era when Gods still walked on the Earth and among people freely. Serie from having mastered and learned magic belonging to the Mythic/Mythology era, and Kraft even knowing what Heaven/Aureole is. When it was Flamme's era 1000 years ago, the location and stories of Heaven/Aureole is already considered a legend or myth, and yet Kraft spoke of the place as if it was a park he used to visit regularly. Kraft even spoke of the Goddess as if he had seen and known her personally, hinting at him being from the Mythic/Mythology Era. If we have to describe what Kraft is like in gaming terms: Frieren is like playing the New Game+ in the same game and story story by retracing the same steps she took and with the same items and build. Kraft on the other hand is like playing at least his 3rd New Game+, each new game using different items and builds and he had 100% mastered every single New Game+ builds that he did. He is not only a Warrior more powerful than Stark, he is also a Priest more powerful than Sein or Heiter, not to mention he is a Monk that fights barehanded without any weapons. It's possible he had been an Archer or an Assassin or even a Thief or Rogue or even a Knight before. Kraft is the very definition of a completionist playing a game multiple times with different builds and 100% cleared each and every save file, not surprising given his long life he can just take his time to try new things and master new abilities.
Serie has been around for so long and was said to be around the mythical era. There's a high possibility where she's no longer interested in the world itself and would rather occupy herself with things she finds interesting. Kraft said his story is now so old it's almost impossible to find anyone that knows of it, yet he was hailed as a hero with statues built for him even. Most famous theory is that he was once part of a party that subjugated a foe with the same magnitude as the demon king Frieren fought or even stronger. Maybe Serie, with her almost eternal life, experienced such events so many times already she deems it as a natural occurrence, something that's part of the world itself. Now she lets nature take it's course, watching over the populace. Anyway sorry if it was long, loved the reaction. You're very invested and insightful in these reactions it elevates the watching experience and I highly appreciate that.
You guys are my No1 reactors I was waiting for this I'm ready to binge your reaction to Frieren! 2:30:20 I had actually this talk in college in my history and mythology of Greece where our teacher mentioned that that why the Olympian Gods didn't have more children beside the ones we know and she said, "We as humans reproduce because we can't live forever, so we pass on our knowledge and experiences to the next generation. If you were immortal you wouldn't have the same drive to have descendants because there wouldn't be a point to it."
I think the thing I like is that you can definitely see how much Serie and Flamme, and Flamme, and Frieren, and Frieren and Fern have a mother-child relationship. There is definitely that maternal quality and love there. Also, adds dimension to Serie following Flamme's will, even if it took several centuries.
10 hours? Hell yeah! God, I really really love your discussions ... it's just so appealing and entertaining to watch. You're definitely in my top 2 favorite reactor, period. Thank you for the video, I hope you and your family have a wonderful year and stay safe!
I also like that she does pick up things from her friends along the way but she’s doesn’t even release that’s she’s holding on to them like turning a field full of flowers , sour grapes remembering himmel fav flowers they influence her magic and lines to keep them close even if it’s more subconscious
The closest thing we have to a creature that can talk but is fundamentally not human would be old stories of the Fae, cruel and beautiful abominations who could twist the meanings of words to trick you. Also, see Terry Pratchett's quote on Elves.
When Stark was fighting Linie, I think his behavior early on their fight makes sense, noticing his master's technique must have intimidated him. Stark's retelling of his last fight with Eisen shows us he still sees himself inferior to his master in terms of strength. Though Eisen said he got scared of him, Stark was not aware of this.
I think the reason Serie is puzzled by the choice of spell from Fren is because it is mundane... but it's not actually a tool. The reason Fren chose this spell is because she saw Frieren hug Methode saying she smelled nice, and Fren's main motivation is to see Frieren smile. For Fren, magic is a way to make people happy.
In the shot where Himmel gives Frieren the mirrored lotus ring, the clock tower is between them showing that the only thing between their "eternal love" is...time.
4:25:00 : i want to point out that after a journey with Frieren , at first Heiter didn't know that Frieren was concealing her mana when they met . But now , he did and he taught Fern that .That's why when Frieren met Fern first time , Fern was already good at conceling mana , almost fool Frieren
Fun fact : They did a survey for most beloved character in Frieren. Want to know the top five? 1) Frieren 2) Himmel 3) Fern 4) The mimic 5) Stark Now without question mimic is by far the best returning side-character in the series. These results here are only one vote per voter so in total 1+ million people took part. But there is also one where people were allowed to vote multiple times and 12.6 million votes were taken down but Mimic still made in the top ten. Go team mimic.
@@zorojuro03 She was 4th on the survery where voters could vote for multiple characters. Hold on I'll grab the multiple voter one. 1) Himmel 2) Aura 3) Fern 4) Ubel 5) Frieren 6) Linie 7) Stark 8) Macht 9) Solitar 10) Mimic Obviously some of those are Manga only characters as of now and we anime fans haven't met them yet.
@@MajorSmurf That explains why Macht of El Dorado isn't in the top 3, because to me he is one of the most well-written characters in the story, and his arc would be one of the best in anime this decade
I’m a month late to this reaction but I wanted to point out something I read a while ago. A disgraceful mage (because she hides her mana) A corrupt priest A cowardly warrior A fake hero That’s the party that defeated the demon king. I just love how this show takes all the preconceptions we have about fantasies like the lord of the rings and then flips them upside down without actually flipping them.
They're not confused by what Fern's casting. It's just ordinary offensive magic. Everyone's confused by how insanely fast Fern casts and her ability to completely overwhelm her opponent with her casting speed. Frieren taught her to exclusively use ordinary defensive and ordinary offensive magic in combat. I imagine Frieren ascribed to the theory "I fear not the man who has practiced 10,000 spells once, but I fear the man who has practiced one spell 10,000 times" while teaching Fern. When humanity was studying Zoltraak with the aid of Frieren and incorporating it into their own system, they modified the spell to specially target demons to the point that it pretty much became its own new spell. That's why Lugner says, "this isn't Zoltraak, this is demon killing magic". And you can see this too. Qual's Zoltraak is black in colour while human's version is white with a bluish hue.
I think its important to realize that Serie lies to herself a lot. Much like Freiren, especially Freiren before the funeral, her perspective has stunted her ability to properly relate to others but moreso properly express herself to others, especially mayflies like humans. She is both wise and childish.
Frieren didn't quite understand Serie's feeling towards Flamme a thousand years ago. But since she's having Fern as family/companion/apprentice now, it's different. Almost like she's walking on Serie's bitter-sweet path of being a teacher/mentor, which deepen her levels of understanding emotions through passing down wisdom and memories. One day Fern will beat her, one day Fern will leave a mark on human history, one day Fern will leave her...But they have created so much memories together. This is such great work depicting time through all these different dimensions and perspectives.
White Zoltraak is modified demon-killing magic aka "ordinary offensive spell", which is the one Fern masters. Black Zoltraak is the original human-killing magic, as seen casted by Qual, and clone Frieren on Frieren. (The spell Lernen fired on Frieren seems to be a variant of it too.)
Here's the thing about why Heiter and Eisen survive for far longer than Himmel is that Eisen is a dwarf (dwarves are longer lived than men, but nowhere near as long as elves) and, I suspect, that Heiter's holy magic was slowing his aging in some way.
Finally you reacting to LAND: being at fcking home , sipping fcking tea , succeeding the most difficult mage exam of his time and simultaneously rizzing the most crazy girl
definitely one of the best animes this season (personally my favourite), I really hope this anime is remembered and appreciated the same way voilet evergarden is cause they're really just beautiful and so far the best depictions of the human experience I've seen.

Elves in Japanese media being notably greedy is somewhat of a trope, which can be traced back to "Record of Lodoss War's" Deedlit the Elf. Lodoss War was a 1st edition DnD actual play from the late 80s that was told serially in an rpg magazine, (before later getting novel, manga, and anime adaptations), and Deedlit's player had that as his fun gimmick for her as a character, and Lodoss is influential enough in Japanese fantasy (like a late 80s Critical Role) that it shifted the perceptions of elves in general.
6:38:51 When she means in two years that Fern will be a full grown adult she means that in 2 years Fern will be 20, in Japan 20 is considered the age of full legal adulthood (I think they lowered this to 18 in the last few years though), so Fern is 18 at this point in the story
Randomly got suggested this and I gotta say I enjoyed your reactions to it a lot! You guys really understood a lot of the concepts and inner workings of this show compared to other reactions to frieren that I've seen.
More so that it's extremely likely to be a mimic, but there's a 1% chance for it to not be and possibly have a grimoire. Frieren is really banking on her luck with that 1%.
To clarify about trade, in Colombia there is a social class called muleteers, they are traveling merchants who sell all kinds of products. Before, they did it with mules, now with adapted trucks. In Colombia, it is not easy to travel. The topography is so hostile that it exists in Colombia. a disease that can give you if you go up or down a mountain wrong and basically you lose your internal pressure that's why the muleteers were created. commerce in frieren's anime works similar to how people can't just go to another city, the merchants have to go to another city. search for your clients.

Oh dang, I didn't even think of that.
That's actually insane. 😮
And Heiter is a corrupt, drunken priest... and Eisen is a coward warrior... there is a theme.

Heiter is priest/healer so goddes and healing magic is on his side, probably thats why he has longer life.
75-76 is pretty young to die if theres no unnatural causes and no, people didnt age faster in medieval times.

Serie: A mere thousand years.
Thousand years to them is like 50 years to us
@@mitsuha4788Maybe not, Serie have around 10 thousand years, so a thousand is more like a 10 years to us
@@eusouobrigadoafalaresseyou2513 And Serie does not even seem OLD old.
It's actually such an important concept that all these reaction channels are based on that 🙂
34:00 It's not that Frieren is so ancient that's not concerned about people.

They were simply too strong. Humanity couldn't ignore it. Adapt or die, and humans are exceptional at adapting.
It’s also pretty scary how fast that guy was overcoming the shield. Fern really was needed, only one mage might have been overwhelmed. He’d have probably made it able to break through the shield in a year if he survived that day.
yeah it's the neat little details like that which make me fall in love with this series

I would like to smell their stench for a second

@@morlock2012 Or like giving everyone a modern rifle.
@@StupidAnon-gn8ih ZoltraAK-47 go brrr
@@ethofan1819 Indeed; I think the founding fathers would appreciate Frieren and all she has done to arm people against commun- demons.
also, one thing to add is that defensive magic takes a huge toll in mana.
This is to further emphasize that she sees demons as "other"
Yeah she counted them how you would count animals
And at that small animals, showing she sees them as inferior. Similar to how Eren referred to titans
I mean I still think Serie fails Frieren out of some pettiness.
@@Aznarel
Yeah the 1,000 year ban definitely was.
Denken has a monologue about it at some point (I think its during the First test)
Also, those that were failed during the Third test weren't so due to being weak mages.
@@purple66666 "It's insinuated by Flamme that no one who enjoys battle could defeat the Demon King."
Don't quote things without context.
Thank you!
I mean she did pretty much take his place as the leader of her current party so I guess your right.
to answer your question, NO in the manga there has been no indication that Himmel had an apprentice. And the characters are so far north I doubt we will meet one. But, who knows what we may learn in a flashback.
But I would accept your point on Frieren. The clearing the dungeon stuff was hilarious.
on ep 21, I give the author massive credit for having thought about how magical tactics and doctrine would evolve over time, that is really cool
friendly reminder that himmel was such a gigachad, that every single demon was so afraid of him, that they only tried to fight humanity again after old man himmel died.
also some information about the fight with fern vs lügner and stark vs linie: why fern is faster than frieren? the answere here is: she only has one attack spell. when frieren fights, she subconciously always thinks about what is the best spell to use in that situation, making her slightly slower. on top of this, zoltrak has a fast casting time, making it a perfect spell for spamming. because of those things, fern is an extremly fast attacker.
on the other side, Linies power is realy strong because she could always use the best fighting style to overpower her opponent. but as mentioned, demons are proud and arrogant, so she tried to beat stark with his own technique. the only time when he gut seriously inquired was, when she got an overhead swing on him, so she can use the weight of the axe to hit a powerfull blow. but otherwhise, she doens't have the muscle to realy take advantage of the fighting style of eisen. so when stark says her attacks have no weight behind it, that is literal: she has not enough power to use this axe to his full extend and this gets her killed in the end. her swing was to weak to realy injure stark but in return, he got a clear hit will full power on her, killing her in one hit. if she would have used the spear or sword style instead, a quick thrust would have killed stark here.
something else I want to mention is about frierens antique necklace: everyone mentions that it is basicly antique and that is because it is. remember, that frieren stayed at the same place after flamme died and she never felt bothered to get a new certificate because "it is always changing". so her proof of her magehood is from 1k years ago when she was flammes aprentice. flamme herself is considered a fairy tale when himmel was alive. so obviously noone knows about frierens amulett
Himmel 100% got radiation poisoning from that horn

This is my favorite show and manga
Thanks for the reaction guys 😊❤
that or he aged normally and Heiter was just using divine magic to keep rejuvenating himself prolonging his aging.
both of them were 16 when they started the journey. they came back 10 years later which would make them both 26. 50 years later himmel died at 76 and 24 years after Himmel, Heiter followed suit at 100 (wow ok using divine spells to keep him up probly stands)
@@reignmansyeah, i mean Himmel and Heiter died in normal human ages. Its not like Himmel died at 40 or something
@@cirnotheicefairy3609 Interesting... . I can see that happening
Note that Frieren's true mana capacity is the same as Serie's...Supressed mana capacity.
Serie is old....as in...prehistoric times - old.
That said...I don't think that Serie would like to be called a 'Goddess'
...after all...her entire motivation for reaching the very pinnacle of magic...was to 'create miracles' of her own, rather than relying on the 'Goddess' to do so.

Omg out of nowhere and boom, 10 hour long vidio reaction 🤣 also i like your reaction and Frieren , it's maybe one of my best anime of all time
Until Frieren, Violet Evergarden was my all time favorite (only ever so slightly edging out Eighty-Six). Frieren has dethroned VE.

Thank you so much guys for the effort and the content !
6:00:21 If you look back at the early episodes, it seems like Fern came from Noble family. My theory is that the reason she is talented in magic because of her lineage.
the mimic fetish is a real theory in the Frieren fandom , and I love how EVERYONE watching the show thought about using a mimic to defeat the clone XD
"I'd be so pissed if my alcoholic friend aged so much better than me..."
... You could say he aged *like wine* ... ^_-
😂😂
Stark has insane strength because thats what he was lacking when his village was destroyed. Fern has insane speed because she had to learn to be a mage before Heiter died. I love the parallels here. 😉
Thank you so much. This just made my day!! And yesss we figured out the sour grapes eventually!!
Kraft is the very definition of a completionist playing a game multiple times with different builds and 100% cleared each and every save file, not surprising given his long life he can just take his time to try new things and master new abilities.
i absolutely loved this. your engagement in the story and genuine reactions are truly captivating. keep up the good content!
Thank you so much!!
2:30:20 I had actually this talk in college in my history and mythology of Greece where our teacher mentioned that that why the Olympian Gods didn't have more children beside the ones we know and she said,
"We as humans reproduce because we can't live forever, so we pass on our knowledge and experiences to the next generation. If you were immortal you wouldn't have the same drive to have descendants because there wouldn't be a point to it."
YES! I was wishing for this for 2 weeks. Thank you sooo much.
Bless these compilations.

"This must be the fantasy version of Florida" 😂😂😂
I really love how frieren make you question things, and then it give you the answer
These full series uploads are the best.

1) Frieren
2) Himmel
3) Fern
4) The mimic
5) Stark
Now without question mimic is by far the best returning side-character in the series. These results here are only one vote per voter so in total 1+ million people took part. But there is also one where people were allowed to vote multiple times and 12.6 million votes were taken down but Mimic still made in the top ten. Go team mimic.
Really? Ubel isn't top 5? Weird. 😂😂

7) Stark
8) Macht
9) Solitar
10) Mimic

I’m a month late to this reaction but I wanted to point out something I read a while ago.
A disgraceful mage (because she hides her mana)
A corrupt priest
A cowardly warrior
A fake hero
That’s the party that defeated the demon king.
I just love how this show takes all the preconceptions we have about fantasies like the lord of the rings and then flips them upside down without actually flipping them.
Im glad you caught the shopkeep aging. Most people ignore it or dont notice it the first time for some reason.
My favorite reaction to Frieren! You guys were into it from the very start, and I loved listening to all your little discussions.
So excited to spend the weekend watching this whole video!
OMG THANK YOU SO MUCH I DID NOT EXPECT THIS
White Zoltraak is modified demon-killing magic aka "ordinary offensive spell", which is the one Fern masters.
Black Zoltraak is the original human-killing magic, as seen casted by Qual, and clone Frieren on Frieren. (The spell Lernen fired on Frieren seems to be a variant of it too.)
Oh shit you are correct. Qual's spell was black when he used it against Fern from what I remember so that makes so much sense. Good observation! 😮

Here's the thing about why Heiter and Eisen survive for far longer than Himmel is that Eisen is a dwarf (dwarves are longer lived than men, but nowhere near as long as elves) and, I suspect, that Heiter's holy magic was slowing his aging in some way.

I like how I know they're genuinely watching and enjoying this as she's developed a twitch to every time he pauses mid-scene.
Imagine going through death, only for some elf dipping her toes in water to tell you fail. That's the start of a villian arc right there.
6:38:51 When she means in two years that Fern will be a full grown adult she means that in 2 years Fern will be 20, in Japan 20 is considered the age of full legal adulthood (I think they lowered this to 18 in the last few years though), so Fern is 18 at this point in the story

Mimics are Frieren's Kryptonite, or more like an addiction, that next chest sure it's a mimic, but it might just have that grimoire.
