  • It was announced back in 2010. Is the Pearl Epro Live Still worth buying? What about the Export version? Metal or rubber cymbals? I outline my thoughts on that in this video.

    This was a really good review. Very unbiased and you stuck to what really matters -the goal to achieve better sounding drums from an electronic kit. Nicely done.

    I got an epro live on a trade. Its a silver sparkle with a full hihat. Though you cannot download the one hi end kit anymore, they do offer an upgrade to the module and it does enhance the sound. If you strike harder, it changes the sound to match. I'm comparing it to my Rolland tm6 and I think it does well.

    I bought this kit back in 2013, the original version but with the rubber cymbals. Got it off the showroom floor of Kennelly Keys for $1600. It's worked ever since. Run it through my laptop into EZdrummer and it sounds killer.
    At the time I was an acoustic kit player for 20 years so when I finally got an ekit I wanted something that was as similar to acoustic as I could find. This accomplished that and with it running through my laptop or studio computer, I couldn't be happier.
    I suppose, if I were ONLY an ekit player I'd probably want the best of the best. But since ekits are second to acoustic for me, this works wonderfully.
    I will sum up by saying this: If I had to pay another $1,000 on top of that $1,600 I would never have bought it. But if you can find it for a decent deal second hand and it's in working order, I'd recommend snapping it up. Just usb or midi out into a computer/laptop running ezdrummer, superior drummer, or something along those lines. You won't be sorry.

    Absolutely the best electronics drum kit I've ever played, bought in 2017. It's a real quality drum kit, you take off the acoustic heads and install electronic heads, sounds amazing through my PA. I will never upgrade, no reason too, everyone thinks I'm playing real drums. I also have the upgraded real looking electronic cymbals.

    i've built a hybrid kit years ago using a $500 pdp x7 kit using epro heads. i added the zildjian genx cymbals. i used the yamaha dtx module and set it to an oak custom kit and the drums sounded amazing. the zildjian cymbals were always challenging because you really had to dial them in. but it worked......its' not plug n play but somethings u need to work on to get the most out of it.

    I use the pearl tru trac heads for toms plugged into a Roland td30.. It works great. once you program the module you will either use the pad1, pad2, or pad3 option in the roland menu for pad type. Its wonderful.

    Hi Justin I own this pearl epro kit still I like the feel of the tru track heads for me personally.The module sounds good for what it is and I actually enjoy playing it more so than the td4 I used to own.When the mimic comes out in Australia I think I would use this and sell the redbox.One thing I did was to buy the rubber cymbals and sell my old metal cymbals so I now have a real hi hat that works with the old 2011 kit

    We just got the Epro Live Export kit for our church along with the Zildjian gen16 cymbals and so far the set up is great. I set up the rubber ride and crash cymbals and use them as extra crashes and/or auxiliary percussion. I'll admit that you can tell that the kit's sound is electric but it is pretty close to the real thing. I personally have never liked playing one, for an e-kit it sounds really good. I can't stand to play a kit that doesn't feel like an acoustic kit.

    I do have one since 2012 I guess and it use to work well at that time but my very problem now is that the components like drumheads and cymbals are failing, the electronics start to get old and get damage and even the plastic of some part like de cymbals just get broken, so it's becoming useless in many facts, I once tried to repair it or go to someone who can but there wasn't a good solution. I try to find if I can buy just the drumheads an cymbals but they are to expensive. I will like to know if I can use other brands and quality of drumheads and cymbals cause y don't really care about brands, I just would like to use it for some years more. If someone have any information I would be so greatful. And thanks for your vídeo, it was great!

    I play these on my snare and kick drum (mesh on all others), all through a 2Box Drum-It 3 module, then through a Focusrite 18i20 audio interface and into the brilliant Superior Drummer 3 software (making all kits within 2Box irrelevant!). Sound is amazing BUT, having a bit of problems with the pad type for the snare in 2Box Drum It 3. Anyone familiar with 2Box DI 3 I'd like to know what pad it is to be selected.

    Personally I like the tru trac feel over the Roland mesh. I've owned both (have the epro now).
    The brains are no comparison, even the pocket sized HD3 brain is better than the redbox. However, I am yet to midi it out and it's still enough to keep you playing.
    If you can find one cheap enough second hand, I would pick it over roland or yamaha kits of the same price.

    I've seen this available with the Mimic Pro w/ Tru-Trac Conversion Kit. Comes in 2 different configurations but I think it actually leaves out a 14" snare it does come with 10/12/14/16 in one setup so I guess you would have to take the 14 and use it as a snare was a little confused this since I have the exact config drums and was thinking about converting to this anyway I didn't and got the Alesis as you know Justin so what are your thoughts on this

    I would love to see a module loaded with Superior Drummer's sounds, but I'm gonna bet it'd be expensive to say the least...I have almost all of the Toontrack EZX/SDX packs I'vw bought over a few years & I've got quite a bit of $$$ tied up in 'em...Same thing with Steven Slate Drums, the Abbey Road Drums series from Native Instruments, plus more...
    I'd like to see a module with the ability to import your own samples, without the big limitation...My DTX502 can do this, but the file size is ridiculously small, so it might as well not even have that feature...I have some online buddies who are great drummers & record at home, with killer results...I got those friends to send me some of their sounds, but I couldn't import all of 'em because of the limitation...
    The Pear e-Pro drums look great, but I'm not gonna drop that kind of $$$ on 'em...I could do the A>E conversion thing much cheaper IMO...
    Great channel dude!!!

    • @65Drums
      @65Drums  7 років тому

      The yamaha drumsets only import 1shot samples. So only 2 layers of sound are possible I belive :( 2box lets you import all of Superior Drummer 2, but it colors the sound a bit, so it still isn't the same. Still waiting for that perfect module to come out :)

    • @minerman1970
      @minerman1970 7 років тому

      Yeah dude, one-shot samples, which would be ok for practicing, but any realistic possibility is pretty much thrown out the window...
      I've got so much $$$ tied up in my computer, vst's, etc., it would take something really great to make me change from what I've got...Maybe someday...

    Hey, I have a question. There are tons of reviews online and it's kind of overwhelming. I see you say the R-Drum RTS II trigger is top of the line. With that said, are all of their triggers top of the line? Or should I just get the snare trigger from R-Drum and tom triggers from somewhere cheaper. I'm not too concerned about the cost and more-so having a trigger that lasts and works really well. Also, what's the best for kicks?
    To sum it up, if you could have your dream trigger setups, what would you go for? (Snare, Kick, Toms, etc)

    • @jrdn5206
      @jrdn5206 7 років тому

      Also, do you have contacts for the people you suggest? I emailed R-Drum and sent them a FB message and no response.
      PS. I have a Pearl E-Pro which is what brought me to your channel which got my idea of getting away from it. It's really hard to be motivated on this kit. It feels like a toy.
      To anyone who wants one and reads this, I'll sell it to you :P

    • @65Drums
      @65Drums  7 років тому +1

      Hey what's up Jordan :) So my dream setup would probably be all R-Drums triggers with Roland mesh heads and cymbals. But you'd be fine going with Jobeky/Pintech triggers for the toms and still get an incredible setup. I don't have the contact info for R-Drums. But the guy that runs the channel Vdrum-tips does (He uses them)

    • @jrdn5206
      @jrdn5206 7 років тому

      65 Drums haha awesome. That's what I was thinking. I saw his channel. His trigger system that he made that allows the same system in different sized heads is amazing. It seems risky to buy from R-drums on custom drums that I don't yet have just because I'd be afraid that it doesn't fit or the screw position is of. Basically those two factors have to be perfect for it to work. Seems scary since it's a high priced item and shipping across the globe to California.

    • @65Drums
      @65Drums  7 років тому +1

      Yeah World Shipping sucks. But you said "dream setup" ;) Don'd worry about the fitting. They make you send a boatload of pictures and measurements. They actually build if for YOUR drum.

      I don't mind the wait. My kit is being made by right now and will take the same amount of time. I was hoping I could order the triggers now and have the mall arrive around the same time. I can hold off for the best I suppose :) . I just wish R-Drum didn't have such a custom solution and instead made something more configurable. Thanks for the help!
      I'm turning a custom SJC 3 piece to electric. I might hurt some people's feelings anyway, lol

    I have a question, and I have no idea where to ask it, so I'll go with right here.
    So I like my metal fast, and I've seen comments here and there suggesting that certain e-bass-drums have issues registering every beat when faced with a barrage of double bass awesomeness. I'm still deciding on what to buy and the thought of this happening to me makes me sad in my eye. Could you, or anyone else for that matter, comment on how big of an issue this is in general, what if anything can be done to improve the situation, and if any kits in particular should be avoided by someone hoping to avoid this problem. Thanks, and such.

    -Sorry about my english-
    I'm using the truc trac pads with the redbox pearl module in my appartment and the pads feel so nice,
    very close to classic drumheads. We repeat every weekend with my group in rehearsal rooms for rent and i play on accoustic drum, the tru trac pads allow me to switch easily i think.
    For the cymbals i use the gen16 series from zildjian (hihat and ride) is quiet enought for my appartment.
    It is necessary to focus on the tru trac, the redbox module can be switch to the mimic pro module ( which seems to be a really great one ) or you can plug them on what you want.
    For example Lars ulric from metallica use trutrac on live : www.pearldrummersforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=501001&stc=1&d=1489671070 he doesn't use the redbox module of course xD
    When i play on a yamaha or on a roland electronic drum i can't feel the drum, i feel the plastic, i heard the plastic but it's just my opinion.
    Anyway if you want to buy tru trac pads, choose a great module, use real cymbals for live (i use truc trac + red box module + real cymbals on live if you have a great sound system the people in front of you will love your drum, my experience.) and put them on a cheap drumset with a good look.
    Tru tracs + mimic pro module + drumset + many reals cymbals (gen16 or classics) = This will cost you around 5000 or 6000 dollars but you have a great feeling, a great sound and the appearance of a classic drum.
    A pic of my set from my appartment :) hpics.li/95bee1e

    Yes, was one of the people who owned the e-pro live kit when it first came out and I paid I think somewhere around 3000 Cad for it. I thought it was great, until I played the Cymbals!!!! The Cymbals were pretty bad, But I really liked the real drum head sizes, and I thought the module was pretty good, but I do agree that there were better ones out there. Now I have a E-pro module powering my acoustic conversion, but i'm mainly running mesh heads, that are really bad.... 1 ply, and i do have a epro live head for the snare, because i have tried quite a few different drum triggers and I have not yet found good one that really works well for the snare or the kick. I don't really know where I really stand with the pearl e-pro stuff, i like it, I think it was a good thought , but I don't like the price for just the heads and I have been seriously considering buying the e-pro heads for the rest of my kit, because I'm really tired with the mesh heads to be completely honest. I do however think that their new drum module looks like it has the potential to be really good. I also do tour with a band for up to 6 months of the year so I put the drums through so wear and tear. My big problem with my drums now is that with touring and doing a lot of shows, for me I would be more apt to going the route of mesh and good triggers, over the e-pros because the e-pros, for one is really expensive to buy, and I had my previous snare head lose it's rim trigger less then 3 months! luckily it broke towards like the 3 last show that we were doing, but 3 months is pretty bad if you ask me. I have also had brand new drum triggers break on me in the middle of a show after I had just bought them, or used them once or twice and in a couple of days latter at our next show it's dead Jim....So the jury is still out with me as to what I will do now, but I know I don't really want to be buying a new e-pro live head every 3 months of touring.

    I used to own Alesis DM10 X Mesh which I've upgraded with Alesis Pro X Hi-Hat which are exactly the same as the one in ePro minus the logo. They look cool, but they are probably the loudest edrum cymbals I've heard in my life. They are mostly plastic with a rubber triangle on one side but the rubber is so hard that they are much louder than crash and ride cymbals that the kit had. By much louder I mean:I had to use headphones with the active noise cancellation so I don't hear them while playing. It was driving me mad and it was one of the reasons I've finally decided to sell this set.

    I know this is an old video but i own one of those, the one with the metal cymbal and LOVE IT, but i didnt pay for it. If you can find one on ebay at a good price you shoud probably get it honestly. One or 2 more cymbals and its almost a perfect e kit imo. i just really dont like the huge snare that it has, but everything else is really nice in my opinion.

  • @jamiesea231
    @jamiesea231 6 років тому

    I'm looking at purchasing the Pearl Export kit for around $700 and the NFUZD for about $1,300 so out of pocket it less than the Pearl E Pro. the plus is not only price but you get both the new NFUZD module AND you get to keep your acoustic kit so really you have 2 kits in 1. I plan on expanding the kit with another 14" floor tom and a few more cymbals (maybe even NFUZD cow bell trigger).
    One big plus I see is if I ever update my acoustic kit to a higher end kit the NFUZD will fit over them as well. The NFUZD pads are also more portable if you are recording on another kit in a different studio that uses VST samples. If you are travelling and don't want to bring your entire set but use a set that's on location, just bring the NFUZD pads and connected them to any kit when you're on the road. Lots of flexibility.

    Bit late to the comments but I own pearl export with Redbox and true track...its OK but most disappointed with the ride it just doesn't have the ride sound. I bought it so can practice at three am so never thought I could use it for gigs ect..but for the money its overpriced and would prob not buy again.

    been using Tru Trac head as my snare and its like beating on a fucking brick. my left hand is sore after playing for an hour or so. I do realize that once you pass the age of 50 EVERYTHING hurts, but they are nothing like mesh heads.!

    I am begging for info from anyone!! I bought the Nitro kit, very cheap but... I have added a Simons 9" kick and I am using a mapex double peddle. My issue... I am trying to get the doubles to work well and of all the things I plugged my set into a Denon DHT-S514 sound bar and it freakin' picks up my doubles and it sounds amazing. I just took back a Harbinger 2215 600 Watt PA speaker and it could not pick up all the kicks. Please recommend a amp that will work! If I can find anything I will strap my TV soundbar to the set and just use that. LOL> Thanks to anyone that can get me on the right path.

      How are you connecting the drum module to the Sound bar, and the PA? And are you using a DI box?

    • @tomshockey3781
      @tomshockey3781 6 років тому

      i connect to the sound bar aux cable and the pa i used line out of the mod. that's it. i was just playing connected to my denon and it makes me smile. 😀

      it worked but just was not able to pick up a fast double bass. if i played a easy beat it was ok. I'm going to go back and sit in guitar center and check out some other speakers. what would you recommend? and thank you for your time btw

      It's really impossible for me to say without being there. A speaker doesn't selectively transmit some kick hits and not others. I don't know what the culprit is in this case.

    I'm probably a bit biased but I would save the extra money for people looking into this and get a Roland drum module in place of the Pearl...Roland are all about electronics and have perfected it over the years...Pearl are a acoustic drum company trying to break into the electronic market. Roland haven't tried to break into the acoustic market I personally use a TD30 drum module for both my TD30K set and my Mapex acoustic converted kit. This is a high end module i agree but you could pick up some of their smaller modules for a lot cheaper second hand these days. Be interesting to hear the new Pearl module however

      Loud Vee - im interested to know the thinking and rationale behind having the TD30 which is excellent... but also having a Mapex converted kit. why both electronic. why not keep the Mapex as acoustic and have the TD30 for Edrums ??

    The thing about the mimic is we don't know how good the triggering is or the dynamics ,all we know is that its using drum software and the sounds are good and it cost almost the same amount as the TD 50 only $200 less in Canada.For all we know the triggering could be trash on the mimic.
    If i was going to spend that much on a module i would probably go with the TD 50 because i know the triggering and dynamics are going to be great and last because of Roland's reputation.The mimic on the other hand,i would wait at least 6 months after release and see if issues pop up with it etc.
    As far as the pearl e-pro goes i would rather just convert a set of pearl drums with mesh heads and triggers and that is exactly what i did do,i owned a pearl export kit i got back in 1998 or 99 ,played it for years in bands but now its been converted to edrums with mesh heads ,triggers and a roland TD 9 module.

      The red box was a disaster and the mimic is not even out yet,i'm just saying don't count your chickens before they hatch and expect the mimic to be amazing cause you could end up very disappointed if the mimic ends up being bad.

      Not everyone lives in Canada thankfully. It only costs $2600 with tax over in the USA. Which is a terrible price. But thankfully nowhere near $4900.

      In Canada and Australia Td-50 module cost 3300+ 15% tax 3775$, DP pack 4250$ + 15% tax 4900$, in Us it cost 2400$ no tax, big difference of currency and tax. Digital snare 1000$ + 15% tax, ride 630$ + 15% tax.

    Don't feel incredible? They feel real AF. No other electronic kit has that feel, not even speakin' of the looks .. Pearl did it. Again.

      It is a silicone foam type of material, not sure what model you had but I do know, not everyone has a house or garage, so this is such a wonderful solution. I am not a fan of other electronic kits, however the E-Pro changed my life. Real feel & sound, a hybrid kit to use either way, mind is still blown.. Amazing quality. Also the sticks bounce pretty good, great for hand technics and so on. The sound is amazing, of course, coming from Pearl. Cheers

      the rim trigger on most heads stopped working like 6 months after buying it. tooo expensive(2700) i think i paid for it. the cymbals are a joke, playing it isn't even close to a acustic drum set. you have better dynamics even on a 300-400 $ kit.
      Only rreason I bought it was because i was curious of the electronic drums....I should've bought the cheapest roland and I would"ve been better off. I havent played them accusticly but just by looking at the shell i know that it will sound like my first drum set (cheap ddrum!) I love the look, but playing it isnt fun. I dont even play it I might just put it on offer up and clear some space! If I had a ddrum with shitty cymbals and the epro next to it. easy choice , i go for the ddrum
      The first time i played the 1st and 2nd tom almost came off the arm!! I was shocked how cheap the drum set felt.

    Pearl exports are crap kits, just like Tama Rockstar kits. Putting triggers on them is trying to make a silk purse out of a sow's ear.

      Actually he's right...Export kits are designed and intended to be ENTRY-LEVEL kits. Mind you better than most off or no name brands. But still nothing special at all.
      I have an export kit that was given to me as a high school graduation present. And as long as I put Aquarian Studio X heads on it. It sounds OK... Not great. So much so that I after I got it. I still preferred my Dad's 30+ year old Rogers kit.
      And then after I got a real job later in life. I chose to build a set out of Keller Shells. Now that kit cost me almost 2k from start to finish. But God DAMN IT if it ain't an AWESOME sounding set!

    Justin lets face it Just about all electric drum kits are money pits sometimes it seems that producers of these instrument's skimp at times in there design RND More than likely to be cost effective to the consumer but overall causing break downs and malfunctions in the equipment I have been through three kits already and I think I showed my Laurin Drum Orange trigger kit well already in less than 3 moths of playing almost all triggers and symbols are not working or just dead period! All the triggers are under warranty but I've already sent back two triggers and two symbols Laurin Hates me! lol But bottom line is there product just dose not take the scrutiny of a drummers wear or normal play So I just took my kit apart and I'm not going to play until I can figure out some other solution? and of cores more money.
