I got mine in May of this year and couldn't be happier, this is my second Export kit. I still have the one I bought in 1986 and it still holds up. I really like the tom mounting system, it eliminates a lot of unwanted overtones, it's similar to the RIMS. The hardware is rock solid and it holds up to my pretty grueling schedule. I couldn't see paying 5 grand for a kit that is going to take a real pounding and multiple set-ups and tear downs every week. You will need to change out the batter heads on all of the drums, they aren't the greatest, but they will get you through until you can afford them. I got the smokey chrome finish and it really shines under the lights, but it is a fingerprint magnet, so if you get that finish, carry a micro-fiber cloth with you. Well done Pearl, and thanks.

I got Pearl Export drums - the 22 inch bass drum, the 16 inch floor tom, and a 12 inch rack tom. They sound great! I’ve used different heads, different sticks, mallets etc, they are really versatile drums in my opinion. And they don’t sound “cheap”, nor do they look cheap, they are really solid builds. I recommend trying one out!

This the exact kit I own. My gig kit. I also have a late 80's Export kit with much bigger rack toms that I now use for my practice kit. I love it! It is durable, sounds great and looks beautiful!

Great review! My wife bought me an electric blue sparkle version for Christmas a couple years ago to supplement my 1961 Slingerland, but she didn’t get the cymbals because I already have a full set of Zildjian As. I can’t say enough good about it, especially once I put Evans G2 coated heads on the toms. I don’t like to use muffling on my toms or snare, preferring instead to take the time to tune properly. The toms have a focused, warm, pitch-bend sound throughout the range, and the 10” Tom makes me smile inside every time I hit it. It is the easiest-to-tune drum I have ever owned, and the 12” and 16” aren’t far behind, especially with the upgraded heads. I suspect the clean bearing edges and 3-point Opti-Loc mount have a lot to do with that. The snare indeed has a warm, woody “POW!!!” that, while not quite as good as my old Radio King, has proven to be very versatile in weekend warrior use. The included 800- and 900-series hardware is another bonus. You get a ton of great stuff for your $$$, as usual with Pearl. I honestly love my Export.

I as an American (and average guitarist who starting to play a little drums) When he said 803 pounds, I was thinking 803lbs!! I was really nervous for a split second! How I would get it in the house?! I would need to call up some friends to help lift it! Great playing! Insightful video. Just ordered one, excited to play it!

Hi pal what about the tom sounds i mean which tunning you prefer on it, I'm kinda low tunning so was wondering if that will match with this kit, I already got an 20" export bass drum and I was thinking to get a 12"tom and 14" floor tom eventually 16" too but I'm also looking for the yamaha stage custom that's all birch shells

I started my real drumming journey on a silver wrapped Export series in the late 80’s. Never let me down and was rock solid for about 10 years of gigging and recording.
The mounts were drilled through the shells in those days and I’m glad they’ve abandoned that practice.
For bang for your buck, there’s no other even close.

That`s why japanese brands had total percussion world wide market control, stunning, open, agressive attack, even with stock Remo/Pearl heads. You can play it in a big gig, openone o a big bar stage as well , and nobody would realise that the kit is an entry/level/student/semi pro player budget oriented, nobody ind the audience, that`s for sure. It matches and in some areas, surpasses my own upper level Premier Cabria 2001 rock sizes kit, made by asian mahogany as well. Amazing.

Currently a guitarist with snare drum brass and concert experience of long long ago, I was going to buy Yamaha's Stage Custom Birch shell and hardware pack as my first drum kit, however due to the impact of peak COVID plan-ic-demic around that time 02/2021 inducing a how long is a piece of string but undeniably lengthy delay with supply problems from Yamaha of that also very popular line, pragmatism saw me go with an immediate purchase of my second choice of Pearl's EXX Export in their 22" Fusion Plus shell EXX725SPC (no cymbals, throne, sticks bundle) config but supplied with their HWP830 hardware pack. Having owned and played my Export set for over a year now, I am truly glad I did. With the benefit of that hands on and 20:20 hindsight, if I was to buy again today I would choose Pearl's Export as my #1 choice tasked to my purpose, need, at a price which permitted me largesse to accessorise without ballistically blowing my budget to divorce threshold levels.
In short, it permitted me to direct funds into buying both foreseen niceties I wanted and many unforeseen accessories one only realises belatedly are necessities consequently improving the overall drumming experience for me along with encouraging the support of my family and reducing impact on less enthusiastic neighbours. So what am I talking about in terms of niceties and necessities. Have a read and do the arithmetic.
It provided me with a choice of preferred cymbal set brand & segment, a throne I actually wanted to sit which would seem me through years on rather than pun intended a basic bare bones stool, multiple pairs of nylon & wood tipped different duty Firth, Vater & Zildjian sticks, brushes and mallets to experience & experiment with, Meinl Deluxe stick bag vs those cheapie pencil case of yore like things , my choice of a spare replacement Sound Custom Pro 20/14 Steel Snare and a complete set of Remo Emperor Tom skins w/bonus Ambassador skin plus a complete fusion set of Vic Firth Drum and Cymbal mutes, a complete 5 piece set of quality Gator Protechtor series padded drum bags and the myriad of other things like a Gibraltar QR clutch (a 20:20 hindsight must have IMV), Gibraltar mini cymbal stacker extension for my 10" bonus Splash, a Gibraltar drill bit drum tuning key, Evans torque key and other tuning tools, a set of Koss QZ-99 noise isolation headsets to save my hearing along with a large new ersatz drum carpet, albeit Persian rug style I actually preferred decoratively without the specialist drum carpet price tag.
The above is in no way a disparagement of Yamaha's excellent SCB as an albeit more expensive but impecible alternative choice -where available. However my rounded assessment of Pearl's EXX Export is that it is an outstanding quality affordable gig worthy performer with pleasing tones which is unbeatable bang for the buck that any beginning or intermediate drummer couldn't not be pleased with. I think even were I professional, just as I wouldn't take a $4k guitar to pub gig venues, this is the set I'd take with me were I playing those sorts of venues rather than a stadium filling figures earning musician.
My personal colour choice - Pearl distro in my country at the time could supply any of their full colour range, was the conservative classic Burgundy (Red Wine to the USA market), the only part of my decision I vacillated upon once I had decided upon the Export as I thought the Cherry Glitter in this demo also gorgeous. Two thumbs up for this kit. Just loving the tone of its hybrid Asian Mahogany/Poplar shells, quality of build i.e. bearing edges, ease of tuning and pretty much everything else about it. Well out of the novelty period with my views. All I'll say if is if you think this might be the set for you and stuck in an undecidedly hesitant mindset confused by hypothetical segment spec. or status games, don't be. Thanks Pearl. Outstanding product.

Nice video I grew up around those drums back in the 80s played guitar
back then. I have the newest version as you do as well. Export in
    Honey Amber Laquer 22 double bass 8 10 12 13 14 16 toms. love it.
Black Remo Emperor batter heads and Black Ambassadors on the bottom
side. Ludwig 402 snare with a Ambassador X Batter on it. Both Bass
drums have EMAD batter heads and no pillows inside. Tell ya what for a
cheap kit and some good heads can't go wrong the the Export. Again nice
video really enjoyed it. Keep up the good work.

I am not in the market for a new kit and would certainly not go for Pearl if I was but i must admit you are providing with the best reviews on youtube so far . To the point , nice editing and visual quality. The perfection would be reached if you tried out kits with different heads on or different tuning but i reckon the amount of time needed to do so.
I would also like to hear the kit through room mics but then again i am being picky. Great Work indeed, you got a new subscriber.

I just bought Pearl set, if you are a pro drummer buy the 5K worth, hi end Mapex or something, but Mapex is #17 and Pearl still at #1 followed by Tama, #4 Gretsch but for a newbie like me I am happy with it. Most review said this Pearl are good when you hear it from a recorded files, for me that is what matters, on stage I rather have the audience hear the one from the amplified sound systems than the actual drums sounds which makes it very pleasant to human ears.

Ive played many shows throughout the yrs and ive had drummers from other bands shocked about how good i got them to sound. One of the drummers was Rocky from Roses Unread. He has DW's with A customs. Check them out on UA-cam.

I play this exact kit in 12/13/16/22, paid 260$, slightly used. The finish looks great on stage, I have Emperors on the toms and an EMad on the bass. They sound well rounded, punchy, with a medium decay. Very good for miking, they work best in a medium to low tuning. If you crank them up too high they lose projection and sound a little flat. When the shells are exactly round and the edges are clean drums will sound well. The snare is OK, but lacks a little punch. It's good for funky stuff, and even for jazzier things. I don't play it, I have a 6 1/2. But all in all, this is a very good value. It definitely does not sound like a beginners kit. I played gigs with it, it held its own very well.

  • @scottlowell493
    @scottlowell493 5 років тому +1

Well done review. The kit is good for basic uses, and does sound ok with quality 2 ply heads like emperor clears. That being said, I do find them a little too dull and would probably opt for a more tonal kit like the Vision maple or birch.

I'm slowly building my own kit. I've already bought a snare, a 12" Tom and a 16" floor tom. And I bought an 8" tom for only 30€ Now I'm saving up for a 18" kick drum and a 14" floor tom. I'm gonna change all the drumheads to Evans Calftone's because I like jazz. I hate clear drum heads.' For cymbals I'm looking at vintage Pearl Cymbals from the "Wild" series; they actually sound pretty good and they are affordable. I also would like to have a set of Zildjian L80 (low volume) cymbals but they are pretty expensive.....

well it really depends. some drums sound better with rings and some dont and even if you copy their tuning scheme, it might not sound exactly as your kit. in my experience, just "research" on different tuning videos already out there on the internet and try their tuning scheme to some degree and from all the tuning videos you've watched, you could come up with your own tuning scheme derived from others. hope that helps. :)

zephooo The original Pearl Export series drums that were made in the 1980's and 1990's were better than these new ones that are out now in my opinion. I miss the old drumkits with the long tuning lugs that came with it. The tom toms were also much bigger too.

Uhh, I live in Japan and I see these drums in thrift stores all the time!! I can get these sets for $100 to#150 bucks!! Uhh to make them great?? Strip them down remove the wrap and then fill the grain, prime them and paint them with lacquer and clear coat them! Bass drum😮?? Find a friend with a table saw and take 3 or 4" off the drum and rework the bearing edge!! One thing I don,t like about modern drums is the deep bass drums! They are one trick ponies!! Bass and punch only!! Hard to balance the character between the toms!
