"Dedicated to the One I Love" is one of their best.
I wha going to suggest that song as well. Go Where You Wanna Go is also a great song.
Especially since everyone was being sent to Vietnam
Jay & Amber, you'll love their "Creeque Alley" !!! The story of their creation.
you'll love Mama Cass Elliot's "Make Your Own Kind of Music" !!!!!
Yes, Creeque Alley is a must!
What I was going to say
"Make Your Own Kind of Music was/is my anthem ❤❤❤
And no one’s getting fat - except Mama Cass 🤠🎶🎼🎶
@@cosmiccowboy7764 and end of 4th verse - And everybody's gettin' fat except Mama Cass !🎵🎶 (J/A spoiler alert)
Cass Elliot’s version of “Dream a Little Dream of Me” is my favorite song she sings.
You bet!
Classic!
I adore that piece of music. A masterpiece, in my mind.
Yes,agreed
Classic!
Since you love Mama Cass so much, try "Words of Love" - she sings lead on that one with some powerhouse vocals!
I forgot about this one.
The group only lasted 2 1/2 years, but their impact lasts to this day. The first Monterey Pop Festival was started by The Mamas and The Papas!
Actually it was Lou Adler who organized the festival. He got the Mama's and the Papa's there because he was their manager etc.
@@donaldkennedy9573they were involved with it somewhat and they later stated that it affected their performance.
Another Mamas and Papas song with great harmonies is the song "Twelve Thirty"
Yeah. That one get's kind of forgotten among their songs, but it's great.
Oh yeah! That's a great one!❤
My fave!❤
That's the song of theirs that I play the most.
... young girls are coming to the cannnyon ... and in the morning ..." Great song!!
"Words Of Love" was another big hit and features Mama Cass belting it out!
John and Michelle were married. Denny and Cass had been in a previous group together. Cass had been head-over-heels in love with Denny for a long time, but Denny didn't feel the same way about Cass. Denny and Michelle had a brief affair. This ended Michelle's marriage to John, and Cass was devastated. The group stayed together, but the tension from the affair and Cass's unrequited love eventually led to the end of the group.
This song is about Denny & Michelle hooking up.
Kevin summed it all up
I graduated from High School in 1969 and all I wanted was a teal green mohair sweater, the Monkeys and the Mama and the Pappas first albums. Their sound was so unique and Cass Elliott was a full package. Happy to see her get her own show and devastated to hear about her untimely death.
@@chadlockhart397 John said that he got his "revenge" over the affair by writing this song about it and making Denny sing it!!!
The Mamas And The Papas - "Dedicated To The One I Love".
My fav, a notch above California Dreamin'.
I watched a documentary about them yesterday. Apparently John Phillips wrote it as a revenge track because of Michelle Phillips' and Denny's affair. Knowing they would have to sing it on stage over and over again.
John Phillips has a daughter MCKENZIE PHILLIPS Right ?
Yes, Mackenzie (One Day At A Time, American Graffiti) is John's daughter. Michelle Phillips was her stepmother and Chynna Phillips of Wilson-Phillips is her half-sister.@Kathy-bk6cg
@@ericwalker8636 he also has a third daughter, Bijou Phillips.
Any thoughts on McKenzie's claims about her father's disgusting behavior towards her?
@@joelhahn2501 There are people who agree with his daughter and there are those who don't. Michelle thinks that Mackenzie is lying about the whole thing.
A bit of history for you - John Phillips was married before Michelle and had a daughter named McKenzie Phillips, who starred in the original version of One Day at a Time with Valerie Bertinelli. John and Michelle had a daughter named Chyna Phillips, who is married to William Baldwin (Alec’s brother), and she started the group, Wilson Phillips, with her friends and sisters, Carnie and Wendy Wilson. The Wilson sisters are the daughters of Brian Wilson of The Beach Boys.
Creeque Alley is a must song to listen to. A true song about them, fun happy amazing song.
Written by John.
When I hear this it makes me laugh because those of us that are older know the story behind it... John Phillips wrote this as a revenge song for Denny to sing after he found out Denny and Michelle his wife were having an affair so Denny had to sing this Every time they sang and so did Michelle...lol... The ultimate revenge song making the person who wronged you sing about it... Great reaction guys... Keep being awesome !!!..
Abba.
Did you notice the mistake in the song? Towards the end the male vocalist says " I saw her .... I saw her again last night". He came in too soon with the "I saw her".
But the record producer liked it so he deliberately left it in the song.
"Louie Louie" is another popular song with a false start. 😮
Love it! Was waiting for it.
Paul McCartney loved that moment, asked John Phillips about it, and did something similar on his Ram album.
Yup, thanks to engineer Bones Howe being a bit too quick on the trigger and inserting Denny's vocals a few beats too soon. I'm glad producer Lou Adler decided to keep it as is because it sounds so darn good. 😁
05:12
This was written by John Phillips for Denny Doherty to sing about his fling with Michelle Phillips!
And didn't Cass have a humungous unrequited crush on Denny?
@@laurabryannan I said that on their Facebook page
His way of punishing them. A song that was a hit and they would have to sing night after night in concert. Sort of like Phillips thinking - let it go…oh no I am going to stick this affair in their faces over and over and make them sing about it in public.
@@laurabryannan Yes, she did. I think Michelle was very jealous of Cass, she couldn't hold a candle to her as far as talent went, so like many jealous vindictive women she went after Denny knowing it would hurt Cass. To this day I cannot stand that woman in interviews she comes across as if she did have talent when everyone knows it was Cass!
Creeque Alley is another M&P song you'd like. Glad you all made it through the wind.
You need to hear their version of “Dedicated to the One I Love”. The 4 part harmonies are so amazing that they used to say that when they sang it they thought they could hear a 5th voice in the mix.
"Go Where You Want to Go" is a good song.
That extra "I saw her" before the final chorus was a goof they decided to leave in.
Correct. Engineer Bones Howe inserted Denny's vocals a few beats too soon, and instead of the strings alone leading back to the vocals, the phrase "I saw her" was inserted accompanying them, and sounded repeated. Producer Lou Adler had the final say, and he liked it so much he decided to leave the "error" as is (thank goodness 😄). This perfectly-timed mixing "error" can be heard at the 5:12 timestamp. 😎
This is one of the most dramatic groups. Their story is a soap opera that played out in real time in front of the world. So many hurt feelings and anger between the band members. The dysfunction was heavy, but man those harmonies are sweet!
When Paul McCartney heard this recording for the first time, he noted the two times they sang "I saw her," he said "That's too clever! That had to be a mistake that sounded good, so they left it in." And it was.
I will echo everyone suggesting "Creeque Alley" and throw in one that starts off with Michelle's gorgeous soprano voice, "Dedicated To The One I Love".
John Phillips has a daughter, Mackenzie Phillips, who made a big splash in her debut role in American Graffiti. She was later in a successful sitcom, One Day at a Time. John and Michelle have a daughter, Chyna Phillips, who was one third of the successful trio Wilson-Phillips, along with the daughters of Beach Boys Brian Wilson, Carny Wilson and Wendy Wilson.
Yes and Mackenzie revealed a lot of horrible behaviour that her father did towards her.
@@samhain1894 Yes, Incest.
@@samhain1894 pretty sure it was mutual / reciprocated, and she was an adult. Sick and twisted, but not one way!
Dedicated To the One I Love is fabulous! It's a remake of a soul song, but John Phillips came up with a very different vocal arrangement that was perfectly executed by the group. The intro has a rare solo vocal by Michelle.
4:38. The fling enraged John so much that he kicked Michelle out of the group. They hired Jill Gibson, to be known as the “fake Michelle.” Jill only lasted about a month. The group accepted an apology from the real Michelle. The fans weren’t willing to embrace the fake Michelle. The group took back the real Michelle and booted Jill.
So, yes Amber, the Mamas and the Papas were like Fleetwood Mac before Fleetwood Mac in the drama department.
Jill Gibson, with help from her boyfriend Jan Berry (Of Jan & Dean) had recorded a couple of solo songs, which were released as 45s a few years before she was brought into the Mamas & The Papas.
John wrote this song to get back at Denny after he had the affair with Michelle. I think they talk about it on their episode of "Behind the Music", which used to be on VH1.
I always loved hearing when Denny comes in too early with “I saw her.” At 5:14
Yup, thanks to engineer Bones Howe being a bit too quick on the trigger and inserting Denny's vocals a few beats too soon. I'm glad producer Lou Adler decided to keep it as is because it sounds so darn good. 😁
That's one of my favorite parts...crazy..lol
Creque Alley is a classic. It’s a song of how they got together.
Glad you’re all ok!
Their harmonies are like.. if it were possible for a song to transport you back to the 60s, this or California Dreaming would be it, some serious vibrations! Dedicated to the One I Love is one I would suggest for the next Mama and Papas. If you like great 60's harmonies and vibes that take you back in time, also suggest adding Spanky and Our Gang "Lazy Day", My grandfather got me on to them.
For good old feel good 60's music "Lazy Day" is tops.
Try "Spanish Harlem" and "Dedicated to the one I love" and "Creeque Alley" which is their story!
A stone cold classic- well done both of you.
Perfect for our little hippie!❤❤
That would be me ! 🎉
Their song " Twelve Thirty" will blow your socks off !!
So glad you and your family are OK with all of the storms down there in Oklahoma. I love how Amber always picks up on lyrics with the first listen. So intuitive. Keep up the great work and stay safe.
Mama cass Elliot was an amazing singer, gone too soon. Love to hear some Shinedown. Prayers to Oklahoma ❤❤
Creeque Alley is a great song by the Mama's and Papa's it tells their story.
Quintessential 1960's. Love it!
I agree with others here. Creeque Alley should be the next reaction to them- for sure! After that, I would recommend "Go where you wanna go, Words of love, or Dedicated to the one I love."
Stevie Nicks & Lindsey Buckingham met at a High School party in 1966. She was a senior & he was a junior. They went to the same school in Menlo Park but hadn’t met.
At the party Lindsey began singing and playing guitar. He was a big music geek. Stevie was too.
What Lindsey sang was the recent big hit then by the Mamas and the Papas: California Dreamin’.
As soon as he started singing it, Stevie joined in, singing the girls’ part.
That’s how they met, became friends, and musical partners.
So there is a big connection between the Mamas and the Papas and Fleetwood Mac, bringing Stevie & Lindsey together a year before Peter Green formed the band with Mick Fleetwood & John McVie in London.
Your next Mamas & Papas reaction should be "12:30 (Young Girls Coming to the Canyon)".
The ABBA of the 60’s.
This group was pure magic. Their harmonies are unequalled, even today. One of the best groups of the 60s.
P.S., much love to my Oklahoma neighbors. Texas stands with you
💔❤
Glad you & Your's are Safe & Smiling! Yes - "Creeque Alley" is a fun story song about them & their Scene. ✌️ y'all !
This was the group everyone listen too backin the day
This song was about Mama’s and Papa’s member Denny Doherty “seeing” other member Michelle Phillips behind husband John Phillips back
I never get tired of that classic 60's pop sound.
"Creeque Alley" Is my favorite & refers to the formation of theirs & other bands of the time.
Two years since you've reacted to this group??!! Wow! Put Creeque Alley, Look Thru My Window, and Twelve Thirty (Young Girls are Coming to the Canyon on your list. And where's Joan Baez and Judy Collins on Female Fridays??
and Carly Simon & Carole King!
@@richardkint6531what about The sherelles, The Crystals, Ronettes, Dionne Warwick, Barbara Mason, Martha & The Vandella’s…Songs: My Guy, Are You Ready, Jimmy Mack, What The World Needs Now, by Jackie Dushanon, Walk On By, My Guy…so many more!
@@kathyrizzi8754 I've been asking for Dionne Warwick. Maybe now that she's in the Rock And Roll HOF, she'll get more respect :)
I suggest Cass Elliot’s “New World Coming”…one of her finest songs that has so much meaning and positiveness !
One song that not a lot of people talk about or react to is their version of the Beatles song I Call Your Name. Cass' voice is phenomenal!
I think this song is one of the most eloquent explanations of how a user feels.
"And it makes me feel so good to know
You'll never leave me"
My favorite of the group was Mama Cass Elliott, she had a beautiful voice 👍♥️. This song reminds me of California.
This was just MAGICAL PERFECTION on record. Cass Elliott and Denny Doherty were such great singers and Michelle Phillips and John Phillips were too. Just unbelievably incredible.
Creeque Alley is my vote.
Love this one!❤❤❤
Those intricate harmonies are so over the top!!!
One of my other faves for harmony is "Got a Feelin"
Loving Amber’s chair dancing! 🎶❤
Mama Cass was in love with Denny but he was obsessed with Michelle who was married to John. John wrote this to deal with his anger at Denny and Michelle and got Denny to do lead vocals! Clearly they were the Fleetwood Mac before Fleetwood Mac !
i always dreamed I was the guy seeing Michelle Phillips again. she was my first crush and remained on my list at the top for 20 years.
Another '60s group with a similar sound is The Association. "Cherish", "Wendy", "Never My Love"
Toward end of song, the pause after" I saw her......... I saw her again last night, actually happened during the studio taping. A brain fart by group, if you will, but the producer said it gave a neat separation, so they left it in. A little trivia from 60 years ago.
Yup, thanks to engineer Bones Howe being a bit too quick on the trigger and inserting Denny's vocals a few beats too soon. I'm glad producer Lou Adler decided to keep it as is because it sounds so darn good. 😁
@@craigcraigster4999 Some of the best stuff is improvised. Lou Adler was right there with the best.
You all gotta play Mamas & Papas version of Dedicated to the One I Love. Harmonies so beautiful, it'll give you chills.
Always be mindful of your words

Yep
Another Wrecking Crew hit!
Since you guys love all the 60s hits, you Really should watch The Wrecking Crew documentary on your movie channel!
Creek Alley, 12:30 (Young Girls are Coming from the Canyon).
Next by them you have to do is Twelve-Thirty! It’s my favorite of theirs.
Mine too!
Great harmony, The Vogues, turn around look at me. The best vocals.
Twelve thirty and creeque alley are two of my favorites by them. They are my favorite indie group from the 60s❤
One of my favorite Mamas and Papas songs. It seems to get lost behind "Monday Monday" and "California Dreamin."
This is a real sort of Happy tune, that's a good Road trip song to sing to.
You would be blown away by how many great songs mammas & Pappas actually have. "Creeque Alley " focuses the whole groups voices , "Words of love" & " I call your name" focuses on momma Cass's voice , so many more in just their 3 years as a group but these 3 are enough to suggest a reaction too.
They brought such a great sound to the 60's! 😊
Unsurprisingly, Mama Cass's house in Laurel Canyon was apparently where everybody went to hang out. I learned that from a really good doc called "Laurel Canyon Mini Series".
Ahhhh. Impeccable harmonies ❤❤❤❤
Luv mama's and papas. Great vocals
"Now she thinks that I love her - because that's what I said..." Duh! Always smile at that lyric.
More of their great harmonies... "No Salt On Her Tail" and "Go Where You Wanna Go"
Papa John was the main writer and did all of the arrangements. In the studio, once the vocals were arranged just right, a mysterious extra voice or tone would appear. They called this "voice" Harvey. So....once Harvey appeared they knew they had their sound. ❤❤❤
Saw that tornado!!! OMG!! GLAD YOU'RE SAFE🙏🙏
The contrast between the sweet sweet harmonies and the harsh, bitter lyrics in this one is all-time classic.
Michelle had with Gene Clark of the Byrds after she had been forgiven for her affair with fellow band mate Denny Doherty. This song was co-written by husband John Phillips and Denny Doherty about the affair Michelle had with Doherty..
Oh my. That must have been intense.
Naughty girl!
John Phillips admitted he wrote this song to punish bandmate Denny Doherty for his affair with Michelle Phillips. Denny actually helped write the song, which is crazy, but hey, that's rock & roll! ;-)
The group had some of the best voices and harmonies, always sounded great. 😎🍺☮️
The flipside to this single, "Even If I Could," is also a great Mamas and Papas deep track.
A treat indeed! Praying for those fellow Okies!❤❤
I love all their songs, wow this takes me back to the good ole days…Boomer time! Thank you Jay & Amber! 👏👏👏♥️♥️
One of my favorite songs of theirs. Someone in my family had this album and this song really stuck out; I played it a lot.
Praying for all those in the path of the dangerous weather!
"Creeque Alley" is must listen Mamas and Papas.
5:12 mark: During an interview, the singers confessed that the quick "I saw her," then switch was a mistake during recording - but the producer thought it had a unique sound of its own... and kept it in the final recording. Very cool!
This music 60s and 70s and yes 80s, made it a wonderful time to be alive.
Denny talked about having to perform this every night on stage after his affair with John's wife, Michelle... it also broke Cass' heart- she was in love with Denny and chided Michelle about being able to get any man she wanted- why take Denny when she knew how Cass felt.
That bit at the end, where he says, “I saw her” and then stopped, and then continued, was an accident that they left in the recording.
Prayers goin up for OK, blessings comin down! Love you guys. So glad you're alright.
So thankful you are, alright we prayed for your family. 😍
Chances are good that you have seen Michelle Philips after the group as she became an accomplished actor working in many film and tv shows. Many of us that she was beautiful. The first time we saw her in the band and she only became more beautiful as time went by. A teen crush that aged well.
Glad to hear you're okay. Good to hear this group. How about some blue-eyed soul? A couple from the 70s, Hall and Oates - do what you want, be what you are; Gino Vanelli - I Just Want To Stop; from the 80s, Grayson Hugh - Talk It Over and from 2011, Mayer Hawthorne - The Walk.
Loved the mamas and the papas This is the era when music was simple and just fun to listen too. ❤
Finally a Mamas and Papas song that is one other than Monday Monday and California Dreamin' .
Creeque Alley talks melodically about their history and coming together to form this group.
Oh, I see others in the comments mentioning that this song is about the, shall we say, interminglings of the band members! Y'all are my kind of people! Much love! 😊
