Yes that is an electric guitar. No its not plugged in. They were lip-syncing to the original recording. Very common back in those days for TV performances.

The greatness of this song is legendary. Real talent survives to be classic.
Mamas and Papas are the gold standard for harmonizing. So sad they are all gone except for Michelle Phillips. Cass Elliot had such a promising solo career until she passed. They have so many great songs in their catalog it is almost impossible to say which is the greatest.
I would put the 5th Dimension up there with them in the harmony and vocals, but yeah, Mamas and Papas are still my favorite overall.

Ahh. The Summer of '65. This was their second big hit after California Dreamin'. Michelle Phillips was 21. Yesterday was her 78th birthday. They did a great remake of the Shirelles hit, Dedicated to the One I Love, and Creeque Alley tells the story of how they got started. There is a lot of singer namedropping in that one.
Cass Elliott was an AMAZING person. One of those people who is a good friend to everyone they know. Plus she could sing her heart out.

@@PapaEli-pz8ff I'm about to turn 64 and I feel not like back in those days. Come on man, the sixties gave us both The Beatles and Bob Dylan. I realize that these are both one offs but I see a pretty barren landscape today. I'm sure there's talent today but no one knows how to utilize their talents now. I do know somewhat what is out there now and it sucks, sorry but music is pretty much dead today and I'm far from deaf. My son will soon be 28 and in his car it's all The Beatles channel or the sixties and seventies channels and this dude was listening to this crap and rap just two years ago. He would gladly tell you that music totally blows today and he's a young one.

The reason there was diversity and a richness of talent then was because the industry was looking for the next new thing. When it became a business, corporate sponsorships and shit, they were looking for something they could sell. It had to sound a certain way; bands that didn't were dropped.
There's still tons of kids that can play, but you ain't hearing them on the radio for the most part.
I was born in 1966. Right when The Mamas and Papas first hit it big. They only lasted until 1968, but had a lot of hits.
It's so depressing to hear you talking about how ancient and unrelatable this sounds. I understand why, but I was a throwback. When all my peers were listening to Van Halen, I was listening to The Beatles, CCR, The Mamas and Papas.
So much of what I hear of today's music sounds fake, auto tuned to me. There are some brilliant voices, though.
I just feel really old right now.

Lex's overall reaction being wondering what the seams on their clothes look like is the primary reason I keep watching your videos. I love the way her mind works. Lex, if you don't write, you really should. Poetry, fiction, nonfiction essays-get your thoughts down on paper because your associations are utterly unique to you.
Mondays were dreaded back then, same as today. The lyrics actually say, "you can't trust that day" and that "every other day of the week is fine". Some have claimed it refers to the Kent State shooting which occurred on a Monday, but that event didn't occur till 1970, years after the song was written.
This is a television appearance, most all television appearances were lip synched (except Late Night TV), so the guitar not being plugged in (was because it was really being played). California Dreamin' their first release is a masterpiece, as was the first album.
Michelle Phillips apparently hated this song and didn't want to record it. But it went on to be one of their biggest hits
I have always loved the Mamas and the Papas even though they remind me of the cast of Scooby Doo.

"Mama" Cass Elliott - if you watch the performance of "Ball and Chain" by Janis Joplin at the Monterey Pop Festival (the appearance got Janis & Big Brother and the Holding Company signed to Columbia Records), you will see Cass in the audience with her jaw dropped. Cool music moment, even though Cass's reaction is to the previous day's performance by Janis, which wasn't recorded.
What's interesting is their kids. Some actually had great careers as singers, and actors. There was tragedy as well.
But talent ran super deep in this group
We took these masterworks for granted back in the 60's. There were so many instant classics being produced so effortlessly that we could not envision that they would never be replicated ever again. We thought the well of musical creativity and originality would never run dry....but it did.
They are all great singers, and the vocal harmonies are incredible-a beautiful iconic song.
Denny did the lead vocal in this one. If you've ever seen the kid's show 'Theodore Tugboat' you've seen Denny as the only live character. He was the Harbour Master. The show was made in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada where Denny was originally from.

which I always took as "just" a part time convenient thing, he wanted something more permanent; a longer term commitment...
As a kid hearing this song it was just about the dreariness of back to school or work...
As an adult I realized that the guy singing "Monday Monday", was already missing the girl he loved by Monday night and that he wouldn't be able to see her again until Friday night or Saturday morning...
Mama Cass has a ringing quality to her voice, like Judith Durham from The Seekers in "Georgie Girl" and "Downtown", also from that era.

Growing up in the 60s was quite the experience. As I'm now in my 60s I'm finding the music of then more and more beautiful. No Autotune or electronic effects to alter the sound. Sure there were bands and individuals who used distortion but not The Mamas and the Papas....

Yeah, for the longest time, TV and video performances were filmed of the singers' lip syncing to the studio versions of their hits. It was standard practice. Some artists even did it during concerts.
Then came the day when people (mostly young people who were clueless) figured it out, and took exception. They said, "Why would I want to pay all this money to come to a live concert and watch a band lip sync a recording? I could have stayed home and played the record!"
In this song, it's easy to figure out that if there's no orchestra visible playing all those smooth fills, it's the record.
You're referring to scam artists in the 90's and after, not actual concerts by legit musicians in the days represented in this video. They only lip-synced for TV shows.
This was standard for most rock/pop performances in the 60's. TV producers of the time insisted on it. Ed Sullivan was the only show that had live performances, and even he allowed lip sync or partial lip sync (live vocals and taped instrumentals) later in the decade.

I consider myself blessed to be a child of the 60s and 70s. Little did I realize it could not be duplicated or even remotely equalled. And it's all available to relive any time I want.
Mama Cass was always fun to watch while she's singing because she always seemed to be having the most fun out of all of them and usually it was infectious and everyone else start being a little silly too
This is the first song I ever heard in stereo through headphones. Everything prior to that was in mono. I was seven years old and just loved it!
John Philips (on guitar) was also one of the producers of the Monterey Pop Festival where Janis Joplin had her big film debut. Cass Eliot (orange dress) is shown during Joplin's performance of "Ball and Chain".
Back in the 60s they didn't trust the artists to actually sing, they would be made to lip-sync to their songs. So yeah, the guitar was not plugged in, it was only a prop. Audiences knew that the artists were not actually singing. So when you see these performances that were on TV shows, some actually sang, but most only lip-synced. If they have a microphone with a cord coming from it, it may be live. But if they don't have any microphones, they are definitely lip-syncing.
It wasn't just a matter of trust. The technology of the time could not easily reproduce and mix a good live sound.
It was also very expensive to hire musicians for so many of these shows
“Monday, Monday” was from their album called If You Can Believe Your Eyes and Ears (Feb-Mar 66). I also love “No Salt on Her Tail” and “Trip, Stumble, and Fall” from their self-titled album of Aug -Sep 66. I was a university student at that time. They're singing along with their recording of the song, so no need for a cord on the guitar.

The one with the footwork, as Lex said, is Mama Cass. She and John Denver did a performance of the song Leaving on a Jet Plane on a show called The Midnight Special. It is worth a watch, Sad that Mama Cass and John are no longer with us. RIP to both.

I loved y'alls take on "looking through a different lense" to the past and I can relate. I was 9 yrs old when this show was taped and so I remember it like it was yesterday and it looks "normal" to me. I watched old programs that MY parents watched and felt like y'all do watching this. A lot of TV spots were Lip Synced and easy to tell. Guitars not plugged in and no microphones for the singers and the exact sound from the records. But some artists did travel with just the music track and sing live with it.
Road trip music when I was a kid…. My parents had cassettes recorded from their records!!!! 🤣

The late, great Denny Doherty on lead vocals here. One of a kind voice talent....
Just for the hell of it, I looked up the instrumentation on Wikipedia, and the musicians who played on this song (and the other songs on The Mamas & Papas' first album) were John Phillips (the group's leader and songwriter - guitar), P.F. Sloan (guitar), Larry Knechtel (keyboards), Hal Blaine (drums), Joe Osborn (bass), plus Bud Shank played the flute on California Dreamin' and Peter Pilafian played electric violin on one track (a cover of Spanish Harlem). There were also strings and horns overdubbed onto some tracks. Most of the musicians were part of a top clique of LA session musicians called The Wrecking Crew, and they played on tons of records made in the 1960s and 70s, either as backing musicians for solo artists or replacing members of bands who were inexperienced at playing on demand in recording studios. Hal Blaine (1929-2019) is believed to be the most recorded drummer in history. You've probably already reacted to several songs with The Wrecking Crew on them, and you will definitely hear more.
For anyone with Amazon Prime that is interested, there is a good documentary on The Wrecking Crew available there. Really worth watching and drives home just how many songs that were hits at that time used that group of musicians. It's truly mind-blowing.

Hey Brad & Lex, here's fun fact. The woman in the orange dress is the same woman you saw in the crowd on the Janis Joplin "Ball & Chain" live video you reacted to last year. She was the girl that the camera focused on who had her mouth open in awe while watching Janis sing. Also, you should listen to one of the songs that the woman in the orange sings by herself. She had an incredible voice! I'd recommend the Mamas & The Papas - "Dream a Little Dream Of Me". She's the featured singer on that one.
This is what true, natural harmonising singing is without any manipulation of their voices by electronics. Had many great hits, as already mentioned Mama Cass (orange dress) died too soon.
They're on a TV show, miming to their current hit (which used to be common/universal practice for bands back then), hence the lack of a cord for the guitar.

It does remind me of sitting in the back of Mom's VW bug and singing to AM radio top 40 hits coming out of one speaker in the dash in 60'2-70'era California..

The guy playing guitar John Phillips and the lady with blonde hair Michelle Phillips is Chynna Phillips mom and dad. Chynna is part of singing group Wilson Phillips. Wilson Phillips had some success in the early 90s.

Such a great song...they were fantastic and it was amazing how they became such icons with only being together as a band for 3 years, in terms of releasing music and performing........by this time, there had been so much drug use, band infighting, power struggles, partnering up....creative disagreements, etc....it's a wonder they held it together as well as they did.......but they left an indelible mark on the 1960s and the pop music world, as a whole!

my sister used to sing this to me when I was in the crib.. I was born the year the song came out. and she said up until I was about three or four I would start to cry when she'd sing it to me, cuz I was very emotional.😂

On a lot of old TV programs they did not have the musicians play live. They would use the studio recording. That is why you hear other instruments not seen.
Just an FYI, Michelle Philips (the blonde) went on to be an actress for several movies and was a regular on the nighttime TV series, Knot Landing, which was extremely popular at the time.
The lead singer was wearing a Nehru jacket (high collar), really became popular in the late 60s

There was an interview when singer Doherty said he first hated this song and thought it would flop but it became a hit so now he loves it.

As mentioned, there was no cord on the guitar because in those days promo videos like this were usually lip synced. They weren't singing or playing instruments at all- just pretending to, while the studio recording was playing over the visuals.
Aww Mama Cass, she was so amazing both vocally and her cute little dance moves! Makes me sad, she died too young from a heart attack after years of dieting...when you diet you lose muscle mass which includes your heart and after years of it, well she died. What was horrible was the rumor put out at the time that she choked on a ham sandwich, which was a dig at her weight and sadly many still think it's true. Shine on Mama Cass!

Welcome to the world of lip-sync. They made little sound on stage but just played the record for your benefit and moved their lips. And as far as 'Mondays' is concerned, people have hated Mondays as long as there have been weekends so that is at least 150 years at the point that tune was written.
You both have such great things to say to a wide range of music! Lex is so authentic, and Brad's comments are so genuine and thought-provoking. Props.

Best thing about this video is Mama Cass's footwork. Appreciate Lex acknowledging her moves.
Back in that era it was common to sing to the studio recorded music or even mime the whole lot when appearing on TV. The use of studio musos, backing singers and multi-tracking could not be reproduced live in front of a studio audience, who wanted to hear the record. So that guitar was likely not connected to anything. Merely a prop to give John Phillips (the band's creative genius) something to do while Denny Doherty took lead vocals. The woman in orange, Mama Cass, was THE voice in the band and left to pursue a successful solo career cut short by her untimely death from heart failure at 32. Obesity and drug abuse had taken its toll. The other woman, Michelle Phillips, was essentially eye candy because she had "the look". No idea if she could sing but she was married to John Phillips at the time. She is the sole surviving member of the band.
The background music was provided by the Wrecking Crew, a loosely affiliated group of studio musicians in Los Angeles that were the "first call" session musicians. Individually and collectively they were probably responsible for at least 20 percent of the songs on the Top 40 charts on any given week between 1963 and 1973. UA-cam features a free documentary about them here on the site. Absolutely worth watching if you love 60s/70s music. Just look for Wrecking Crew.

The pre-autotune days, when singers actually had to be able to hit the notes on pitch, didn't have digital processing available to "fix" vocal limitations.
I was a kid when they first came out but I remember how well their voices blended compared to just about everyone else (the Beatles are good at that as well, but not all four of them like these guys). My favorite song of theirs is "Twelve Thirty". The lyrics and vocals just off kilter a bit, just like me. :)
I grew up in the 60's. So much good music on the radio. And TV, good stuff once a week on Ed Sullivan Show. The 60's and early 70's rocked.

Well if you look at the history of the band and its individual members, life was pretty damn complicated back then too. Though not for me, I was just a nine-year-old kid.
Yes, that was an electric guitar. The reason you don’t see a cord is because they’re not really playing live so the guitar doesn’t need to be plugged in. They’re playing along to a prerecorded track.
That’s why the song fades out at the end.
This was the 2nd big hit for the group in 1966. Folk Rock....
They mimed this song on stage.
They were lip syncing to the studio recording, which, I can assure you, had more instruments playing than just one acoustic guitar. In fact, the backing track of this song was played by the most prolific of all groups of studio musicians in the world, The Wrecking Crew, that core of studio musicians in Los Angeles who played on just about every hit record recorded west of the Mississippi in the '60s and '70s. I highly recommend you watch the documentary film titled "The Wrecking Crew." It's on UA-cam. Absolutely worth every minute, and will give you a peek at some of the best unheralded musicians the world has ever...NOT...known (until the film was made).
