      Wow Susie D!!! I just started the same way of eating that you are doing. Today I got discouraged b/c I keep hearing that all of the starches that I am consuming will give me diabetes. I love my fruits and veggies along with every starch I eat. Doctors like to confirm that statement that this way of eating will lead to diabetes and heart disease also.
      I love this way of eating but everyone is so ready to criticize and attack me. I can’t even order anything vegan without a comment.
      I would love to do the same as you! I have 40 to 50 pounds to lose. One Doc here on YT says we shouldn’t be eating that much fruit at all.
      He wants us to eat veggies and water and OMAD. I did OMAD for 6 days and I was proud of myself. I’m not blaming anyone else but I have 5 other family members that I live with and it’s sometimes hard. I used to be the main cook in the the house. Anyway, CONGRATS TO YOU!
      Your post stood out to me b/c I eat the same foods as you do.

      @@veronicamarie3382 watch What the Health. They explain how they put a diabetic on nothing butfruit..white rice and sugar..and instead of dying like regular doctors tell everyone..he got better and after a couple three months was no longer diabetic. Also Freelee the banana girl lives mostly on fruit and she has done so for 15+ years. She looks and feels amazing. Doctors are good at prescribing meds but have no clue on nutrition. This video has brought great relief and enthusiasm to me. I too have read all of the books, McDougal, Furhman, Greger etc and I would go great at the beginning but found myself falling into bad food habits after a while of staying strictly to one author or another. I feel that you have given me permission to eat well, WFPB and am sure now, without the guilt of having to stick to one authors plan or the other I am on an exciting and inviting road. BTW I am 75, swim an hour a day, walk 3 miles and no meds. BUT I am overweight, have sciatic pain. I feel if I just eat well as you described, the weight will come off naturally. I just this morning found your channel and subscribed. :) Greetings from North Bay Ontario.

      Dr. McDougall says to keep it simple by choosing a starch and adding vegis (and fruit, if desired.) I carried cooged potatoes with me and the minute I thought about food, I'd eat some. The starches keep you feeling satisfied. Good luck. I've lost a lot of weight, and overcome a lot of illnesses.

    I’m 7 months in and this is my favorite video I have seen. I’m tired of bouncing back and forth between how not to diet and starch solution lol! I just need to relax and eat my healthy vegan whole food no added oil and trust the process. 60 lbs down!! When I do starch solution I cave and eat avacado and feel like a failure when I do how not to diet I cane and eat white potatoes lol! So what! I’m over it! That’s the same restrictive stuff that got me into this mess! Moderation, calorie density, and 💯 WFPB will work. If we stall, we can take notice and see if adding to much fat or processed bread..
    I needed this video!

    I started out as basically a Nutritarian in 2016. I say basically because I was still eating a couple of things that Dr. Fuhrman's books said I really shouldn't eat (ex.: eggs). Over the years I read more books by people like Dr. Greger & Dr. McDougall, Dr. Barnard, etc. I've taken info from each doctor and combined it to suit me. I now just consider myself to be a person who eats a whole food plant-based diet. Your video was inspirational.

      Nutritarian WFPB is the healthiest form of WFPB because it focuses the most on highly nutritious foods! I'm a huge fan of all the docs you mentioned btw, as a future doc, they are my role models!

    • @PlantFitMeg
      @PlantFitMeg  2 роки тому +1

      @@bryant475 I love Dr. Furman's focus on the most nutrient dense foods! Nutritarian WFPB probably is one of the healthiest versions of the diet, but any dietary/lifestyle change will only work if it's something you can commit to doing consistently over the long-term. It's cool that you're training to be a doc and are finding inspiration in all of the wonderful plant-based doctors out there! 😊

    • @bryant475
      @bryant475 2 роки тому +1

      @@PlantFitMeg Indeed, I completely agree! I've been health coaching for a few years now and I've learned that meeting people where they are and gradually helping them transition to WFPB and then Nutritarian WFPB as like a goal to continue to strive for, keeps them motivated but not discouraged! My patients send me their daily food logs and I help them tweak things here and there, and I always make sure to encourage them to continue and remind them of how long they've come and the health progress they've earned, and that if they slip up a bit, to not let it get to them but get right back up and keep going! They've all experienced incredible health benefits, like weight loss, getting off meds, better energy, sleep, skin health, etc., and I remind them about where they started and that keeps them motivated to not go backwards! Your story is very inspiring and I'm sure you know what I mean :)
      I appreciate that! Yes I've been blessed that God led me to these amazing doctors, well before med school even- back in high school! Yeah...I was that one kid in H.S who ate healthy haha. I was always into health and fitness, and realized that I wanted to become a doctor, but I didn't just want to be a conventional drug pushing doctor. Since then it's been a journey of discovery, learning about the isssues with big pharma/medical establishment system of training doctors, finding the doctors that are healing people the right way, the mechanisms behind why Nutrition heals (Nutritional biochemistry is my main area of research, and also epigenetics, nutrigenomics), collectively the science behind "Food as medicine" , etc. After learning pharmacology, I realized even more just how amazing these sciences were, because they show how nutrition attacks the root cause of the problem, rather than circumvent and "treat" the problem indirectly, never truly fixing the problem, while causing side effects on top of that. I have numerous examples of this, but they would make this comment super long, haha!
      Anyway, yeah I had the pleasure of meeting a few of these all star docs at the Real Truth About Health conference here in NY (Long island). It's an annual 10 day conference, usually in late January. I went in 2019 and 2020 (right before lockdown). I met Dr. Fuhrman, Dr. David Katz, Dr. Garth Davis, Dr. Pam Popper, Brenda Davis, etc. All amazing people who truly care about the health of others :) Dr. Fuhrman told me "Keep going and spreading the Truth, we aren't getting any younger and we need you guys, the next generation of docs to continue this legacy of true healing" .. Yeah it doesn't get any more inspirational than that!
      Btw, it would be cool if we collabed and did a video interview/conversation for our channels, talk about our testimonies, some science, some of our favorite recipes, etc. Let me know if you'd like that idea! Take care and keep up the good work, God bless!

    There is something about you, that draws me in. I am starting a vegan based diet, started 4 days ago. I love "do what works for you" I know I am having a hard time letting eggs go. My biggest things were eggs and cheese. I let cheese go, cold turkey. I have an egg each morning still, but the rest of the day is vegan. I want to transition eggs out and will, but so far in 4 days I have lost 4 pounds, and already feel more endurance (I am over 300 pounds right now and 55 years old).

    Your story is so inspirational -- love the focus on health. I was a vegan for 7 years then got lazy and started eating eggs and dairy -- and gained a lot of weight! I started eating WFPB in April and feel confident I'll eat this way forever -- love it! I'd say I mostly follow Starch Solution but for my health try to eat as many fruits and veggies as I can (daily dozen and GBOMBS). I've lost nearly 40 pounds (some before going WFPB) and am very slowly continuing to lose. Thanks for all your great content!

      I eat the GBOMBS daily as well! Easier to remember those than a Dozen items! LOL! I use to follow the Starch Solution but got complacent after 3 years and slowly started back eating vegan junk food when the Impossible Burgers came on the market in my area. What a slippery slope of being Vegan but unhealthy! Now I’ve all but gained my weight loss back and added Endometrial Cancer to boot! Guess what the first known risk factor for Endometrial Cancer is…..Obesity! Yikes, so now starting back on the MOST healthy plan I know of and that’s Dr Furhman’s Nutritarian Diet.

    I am only a couple months in, from Mid-May. I decided overnight to switch to a vegan diet for health, for the environment, for the animals. I had watched non-stop many documentaries and it hit me all at once. When the diet change eliminated all my menopause symptoms I was convinced it would be good for me! I kept watching, reading and learning so by the beginning of June I got rid of all the vegan junk food and now am WFPB, no oil. I first read Forks over Knives beginner planner and I just finished reading the Starch Solution. I found your channel about a month ago and your compassionate voice helped me on days I felt a bit lost. Plus your family is adorable and the laughter lightens my mood often. I really love your approach of getting the best from multiple sources and adapting that for your needs. I don't cook with oil in a classic sense, but I do use some oils as a spice. That teaspoon of toasted sesame oil in a 5qt pot of delicious soup, or quarter of a teaspoon of a homemade chili crunch in a giant bowl of veggie stew will not interfere with a weight loss, but makes those dishes taste a whole. :)

    Hi Meg!! Thanks for another great video 😊 I love your new hairstyle!! I also really appreciate your balanced approach to all these plant based experts who have slightly different points of view. Like you, I dabble and experiment. I love starchy plants like McDougall, and I think his approach is really accessible for people coming from a processed Western diet, and my husband and 7 year old like those kinds of meals best. But I also love Dr Goldner's green smoothies as a staple (in fact I think having daily heaping doses of greens is what allowed me to finally heal a very challenging menstrual cycle and get pregnant after trying for 3 years...yay, I am almost 5 months along now!!), and I also think Dr Fuhrman's and Dr Greger's emphasis on beans and vegetables is wonderful and tasty. These doctors are all wonderful, and I'm so grateful to them and to you for helping people live healthier and happier!

    Oh you, with your balanced and well-reasoned videos. Haha, I love them. Keep 'em coming. Thank you for another vulernable dive into your personal story. I too have figured out what works best for me and it shifts with the seasons. Currently, it's summer, and I'm enjoying Dr G's hypernourishing smoothies and a very simple, pared down version of Dr. McDougall's starch solution. Definitely WFPB SOFAS-free. I was raised a vegetarian and chose veganism almost 30 years ago. I'd say I'm an ethical vegan because it is political for me; this way of eating/shopping/living is my act of non-violent resistance against the outrageous processed franken-food, agribiz, and pharmaceutical juggernaut. Okay, stepping off my soapbox now. Peace to you, Meg. Thanks for these videos.

    Hey! I was looking for some inspiration on the WFBP way of eating. You're approach and expression of your journey is so inspiring, thank you! I'm gonna check out the books you recommended and go deeper into the WFPB diet. My biggest snag is that I still have the WheatBelly diet (KETO) in my mind, since I lost about 15 lbs, a few years ago on it. So, after choosing the WFPB way over a year ago, I was hungry a lot and added the fats back in, then the eggs, etc, and down the slippery slope I went! My weight loss was minimal like 5 lbs.
    I'm looking forward to making changes like you stated, and not being so hard on myself when I can't follow the method to the "T". It truly is a time of getting to 'know thyself'. Thank you for your hard work and sharing your heart. I hear ya, and think you're doing great!

    Hi Meg. Last summer I switched my family to a mostly plant-based diet. I read How Not to Die at the time and was really inspired. I do have a very hard time with my 3.5 and 6 year old kids fully buying in. They definitely miss meat! I've read all the books and try to make most of my meals with a 50/50 plate, but I struggle SO much with snacking (binging) on ultra-processed baked goods, candy, etc. that are definitely not always vegan. I had a lot of success with weight loss when we first started, but have definitely slipped with the snacking, causing a lot of weight gain. I just can't seem to fully commit.

    • @PlantFitMeg
      @PlantFitMeg  2 роки тому +2

      Hi Caity, congrats on switching to a mostly plant-based diet! Finding your why is really important for staying on track. Try to dig a bit deeper to find out why you really want to make changes, and do your best to stay connected to your why. Keeping processed food out of the house and sticking to a list when shopping can be helpful. Sometimes eating larger healthy meals can also help with reducing the need for snacking. Another option is to make healthier versions of sweets and baked goods you enjoy. It takes time to make new habits and build new routines for yourself and your family. Be patient and keep going!

I too read how not to die, it's an amazing book!!! And he emphasizes on the need for tiny amount of healthy fats a day. hey enjoyed your perspective, thanks and hi from australia. I just switched to vegan only 2 weeks ago and what surprised me is how satisfied I am... i thought that would be a real battle. Im in my 40's and weigh 104kg (230 pounds) i own a restaurant so i am around food all day so i thought it would be hard. I am a big eater and work long of hours on my feet so my approach so far is to make sure I'm never hungry. last night i made a lentl curry and i couldnt eat its all! (Its possible i am consuming a bit more oil and salt than i should, but its part of strategy at this stage)i am really enjoying mealtimes. the other thing i find, from a food prep point of view is that many meals can be made pretty quickly, because you dont have to prepare meat. I'm hoping to lose weight, but im not focusing on it.

    My approach is to be as plant based as I can, but don't beat my self up with I have fast food. I have been struggling with a sore foot for a couple of months now and just found out this week that is it indeed broken. I have been trying for the past few months to do a much as I can from a wheelchair. Not easy, believe me. However, I am still continuing to lose and I think it's because when I eat out, I try to choose vegan options or at least make my meal as meat free as I can. For instance, I get a veggie sandwich from a local deli and load it with LOTS of vegetables. I then get it without cheese and have yellow mustard put on it or mashed avocado. Delicious! I am proof that you can eat out a lot and still eat healthy. Oh and BTW,I now prefer my veggie to be sautéed in water over oil. They just get way too greasy with oil.

    I lost 29 pounds last year. Like you I slipped up and gained a few but back on track now. What works for me is a combination of raw fruitarian style 10/10/10 and clean eating flexitarian. I simply can’t eat the high protein vegan foods so I add in fish or eggs with my evening meal to get in my protein. Beans lentils etc all give me horrible bloat. But a base of 80% fruit and leafy greens makes me feel good. I start with raw oats and loads of fruit Bircher muesli style or a very green smoothie. Both are very satiating. I suppose I am a combo of Freelee raw till 4 and Nutritarian. Starch solution doesn’t float my boat. It’s too bland, although I do avoid oils.

      Simply eating vegan does not equal weight loss. Weight loss is most often a factor of more calories burned than consumed. You must exercise and move about to burn the calories that you consume (beyond what your body needs to basically survive) ... and then some.
      This channel mentions that and seems to say if you are going to have to eat calories to survive they might as well be Whole Food Plant Based calories providing the nutrients your body needs and not the extra fats, sugars and oils that your body doesn't require for health and survival.

How do I get my family on board with eating a plant based diet? For the past month, I have only eaten meat once. I started the medical medium detox to jump start some weight loss and lost 9lbs. Welcome to the channel! Getting family on board can be tricky. It really depends on how open they are to change and what the family dynamic is like. It also depends whether you want to make an overnight change or a gradual transition. A few quick tips are: make familiar foods in a healthy plant-based version, gets kids involved in shopping and/or making food, rewatch documentaries with family, discuss the benefits you have experienced, and lead by example.

    Dear Meg, thank you so much for this video! At this moment I am suffering from information overload. Your video just cleared up so much confusion for me. The moment when you mentioned that so many people follow ONE WAY of eating in a certain “program” and don’t want to hear any other way, I couldn’t wait to hear what you had to say next! And what you said next has been my (confusing) experience! Thank you for your story and your honesty. Thank you for letting people know that you can eat avocados and STILL LOSE WEIGHT! I was trying to sauté some veggies the other day and almost made myself sick because I used a teaspoon of avocado oil. And all I kept telling myself was “tomorrow you will be wearing this avocado oil! I lost my appetite! The extremism is out of bounds and over the top to say the least. I am a great cook so this lifestyle is easy for me to tweak to a PBLS. So, because of you, so far, I will continue my journey. We need more plain and simple truth to help people to try and do better for themselves. I feel like you did my homework for me. Please stop the extremism people.
    I appreciate you Meg 🙏🏼

    I think age has alot to do with results. When I was 18 I went plant based and lost 45 pounds without even trying. But now at age 59, it is so...much...HARDER to loose weight. The only thing that has worked for me in two years of trying was to finally, 8 month ago, to commit to Maximum wight loss/John McDougall....50/50 plate; no nuts, seeds, avocado, olive, oils, nothing processed, etc. I have lost almost twenty pounds, but it has taken alot of effort and discipline, even with exercise.

There are so many variables with weight loss and that's why I always encourage people to focus on eating more plants, be as wfpb as possible, and pay attention to other lifestyle factors (exercise, stress, sleep). I think the Nutritarian aproach works due to calorie restriction. I lost 14 lbs in the first month on the starch solution, then stalled. I tried for another month without success. I just started the Eat To Live book foods and I'm losing weight again. Definitely not going to be able to do it more than several months because it's a little more expensive. Once I've lost all the weight (70 lbs +) I'll begin to add more starch in my diet.

      It has been mentioned by Meg a lot that you have to be kind to yourself. Don't expect perfection and a truly linear path to weight loss. Experiment a bit and settle on what works for you. Measure your successes not only by how you look but by how you feel as regards to energy levels and clarity of mind.
      Weight is a number on a scale not how your clothes fit you or how you believe you look and feel. To Quote Plant Fit Meg ... "You got this".

      You might be a bit more limited without an oven, but you can still make it work with a microwave, pressure cooker, and/or slow cooker. Using one (or more) of those appliances can help you to make easy meals at home. If you have a microwave, you can use oats, pre-cooked whole grains, canned beans and legumes, fresh/canned/or frozen fruits and veggies to make meals. Hope that helps!

      I always recommend discussing specific medical conditions or concerns with a plant-based/lifestyle medicine doctor. As for switching to a more plant-based diet, there are many ways to go about it. My "How to Go Vegan" playlist is a great starting point: ua-cam.com/play/PL2xc7vtzqbIMsSLb-rljf9AwNo2voenVF.html
      Start with what is easiest for you to switch up and branch out from there (ex. switching to non-dairy milk, making chili, curries, pasta dishes with beans or lentils instead of meat etc..). Tweaking recipes you already enjoy can be really helpful! Focus on foods and flavours you already enjoy and experiment with different recipes as you get more comfortable with eating a plant-based diet. My recipe playlist might also be helpful: ua-cam.com/play/PL2xc7vtzqbINiTOQCM5UpbmJ6apouI6BD.html

    Thanks for your video. I take a balanced approach with no hard and fast rules except for this: eat whole plant foods as much as possible, and only occasionally minimally processed foods like rice and pasta. No oil but I do allow low salt and low amounts of sweetener in some circumstances. I have removed 28 pounds since December 2020 out of about 50 that need to be removed. I initially started with the goal of eating more vegetables for better health. Then it became WFPB exclusively, within about a month. I keep in mind the 50-50 way of eating. Oddly enough, the book I resisted buying was the book that helped me set more concrete goals and ways to meet those goals. It was "The Secrets to Ultimate Weight Loss" by Chef AJ and Glen Merzer. Her lifelong addition to processed foods resonated with me as did the philosophy she adopted of eating vegetables for breakfast. I also watched some documentaries and read The Starch Solution, The Alzheimers Solution and samples of many other books.
