This Week in Middle-earth | Week of October 12th - 18th

What happened this week in Middle-earth?
Thorin's Company travels north-west through the Desolation of the Dragon. They make camp below Ravenhill. Frodo and company reach the top of a long slope and see the rest of their journey laid out before them. They begin to head back to the Road so that they can cross the River Hoarwell by the Last Bridge. Thorin sends Balin, Fili, Kili, and Bilbo to scout the land around the Front Gate of the Lonely Mountain. Strider leads the hobbits to the Bridge of Mitheithel where he finds the elf-stone left by Glorfindel. They cross the bridge and continue into the land formally known as Rhudaur. On Bilbo's advice, Thorin's Company moves their camp to the western valley of the Lonely Mountain. Strider leads the hobbits through a long valley with difficult terrain. It pours rain all day on Frodo and company. Due to steep hills, Strider is forced to lead the hobbits northwards out of their course. Provisions are running low. They camp in a shallow cave and Frodo has uneasy dreams. The rain stops and Strider scouts the land in the morning. They turn south-east through a rocky valley. They are forced to climb a ridge and Frodo collapses at the top. Frodo and company find the old stone trolls from Bilbo's stories. In the evening they meet Glorfindel. Gandalf reaches Rivendell.
