  • A 73-year-old stroke survivor in critical health has transformed!
    Bob Madison no longer struggles with diabetes, high cholesterol, heart issues, and nerve pain that nearly killed him. Within a month he no longer needed insulin and was able to dramatically reduce other medications.
    Bob also lost well over 50 pounds and went from relying on a walker to walking over five miles in nature.

    Mom had her heart attack at 81. I moved her in with me, introduced her to plant based whole foods and she began to thrive. She died a few months ago at the astonishing age of 103 ½. Her doctors at first told me she would likely have another and the next would be fatal. Or a stroke. But we proved them wrong! Especially as no one in her family back to the 1920s, which she still remembered, lived much into in their 70s.

      @@sunmoon-84 Absolutely. We had a great run for 22 years. Full of adventures. Even at 101 we went to Washington DC, where she'd never been before, and was honored at the Military Women's Memorial, as a "living legend"

      Wow, thank you for sharing this amazing story. My mom had a stroke a few weeks ago that was caused by blood clots from AFib in her heart. After probing her neurologist, he mentioned that plant based eating would help her recover. I’m already convinced of the benefits of plant based eating however my mom has never been on board. I don’t want to feel like I’m forcing it on her, but I know this is right. She just came home today so we are weening her off of seafood and headed into plant based eating. Your story has inspired me to keep going down this path with her.

      @@smb437All the best to you and your Mom for a speedy recovery. Having such great support will help a tremendous amount. Mom always got to choose what she wanted to eat, and after such great plant-based meals during the week, she began to lose her taste for the steaks she liked to have weekly, bacon-wrapped, no less. Was less than a year before she said goodbye to beef completely. She had salmon when we went out, but that, too, began to wane after a few years. "I just don't want it anymore."
      Will be thinking of you and wishing both of you and all your family the best. 💜

    I'm going to be 77 this year and according to my last wellness exam my chance of having a cardiovascular event is 1.3%. Vegan/plant based since 1986 and will never go back.

    When I was 61 I had a stroke that left my right side completely paralyzed. With my personality, I wasn't going to be in a wheelchair for the rest of my life and I worked so hard to eventually get use of my arm, hand, and leg working again. It wasn't easy but I wouldn't give up. Anyway, since then I've done some researching, watched some important documentaries (one of which was Forks Over Knives), and made a decision to go WFPB. Well, not only am I able to do everything physically that I could prior to when I was 61, but I actually feel younger! The only negative is that I still have to work on my balance to get back to where it was but I can walk, run, and ride a bike. I'm now 71.

    I’m a 75 and a vegan for 8 yrs. I knew a lot of Bobs information, but I still learned a lot from this interview. I’m going strong with great vitals along with regimented exercise activity. When I go off plan, I really do feel it. It is soooo worth the effort. I’ve been told many times I look 10 yrs younger. Works for me! Thank you both for the information share.

      Great to know! What does your physician say and how does she help them?... I'd like my physicians to behave like that, but all get so baffled with my blood analysis that they focus mostly on iron and tell me I need to eat meat... Only the last one told me that I was healthy and she thought it was ridiculous for the previous physician (she was replacing her absence) to ask me for blood tests each 5 months and being so concerned over nothing.

    My Dad was in the hospital for pneumonia, and when I visited they brought his lunch ( French fries and chicken strips) My sisters and I started bringing all his meals.

    At 50 I started to have health problems. At 58 I was getting more serious health problems including daily chest pain and severe pain in my legs. I started a whole food plant based diet and now at 71 I have no health problems and I’m on no meds. A whole food plant based diet works.

    I always love what Dr. Greger says about moderation: moderation is just hitting yourself with a smaller hammer. I had to think about this when Mr. Madison was talking about moderation and if he hasn't heard that one yet I think it will give him a chuckle.

    Very inspiring interview 🙌. So happy for you Bob that you were able to stick with it and enjoy the benefits of your choice 💪. I am 40 and have been plant based for 8 years now and also enjoying the benefits of my choice! My parents are in their 70's but won't listen to me unfortunately 😔. Chuck, is there a possibility in the future that people will be able to watch the exam room in other languages (using CC)? My parents live in Brazil and don't speak English. It would be awesome if the information we get from your interviews could be spread across the world in different languages too!

    Inspiring talk! He is a shining example of what a person over 70 can achieve. It's my opinion that the artificial flavour enhancers and chemicals that the fast food manufacturers add is the reason that even years after eliminating these foods you still crave them.

      Defintely, food scientists are employed whose whole jobs revolve around making processed foods as addictive as possible. It is literally a topic of scientific study that brings in big bucks.

    Boy i can relate to those falls. I was WFPB for 7 years. Numbers PERFECT. WEIGHT WAS GREAT EVERYTHING WAS WONDERFUL. Then I got cocky. I figured one cheat meal is not going to hurt me. I went out and really did it up. The very next day I jumped right back on and I was great. Then I thought to myself this is simple I have it licked. I can cheat once in a while and be good the rest of the time. Well one cheat meal turned into two and that turned into three and before you know it I was at McDonald's and Pizza Hut and Chinese restaurants not eating steamed broccoli. Weight shot back up numbers went the crap it was horrible. I'm on my third week of the whole food plant-based lifestyle hopefully I can stay here

    I was on the Macdougal program , it did help, but using my BG meter found out it stayed high 9.1 so I stopped the high starch foods such as corn, potatoes, and corn , boom with in 4 days my BG testing finger pricks 3 times a day went from 9.1 to 5.4 on the meter, I guess one size does not fit all . and yes I lost weight from 191 to 163 pounds in a month , that's 28 pounds ,

    What an absolute load of information! I’ve just found this channel and I’m already a bit perplexed as to where I would get any of these ingredients. I’m in Canada and will have to do some research! Very encouraging podcast.

      Ingredients are potatoes, corn, rice, grains like barley, beans, legumes (lentils), greens like lettuce, collards, broccoli, zucchini, winter squash, fruits like bananas, oranges, berries, peaches. Are you trying to tell us that you can't find these ingredients in a grocery store in Canada?

      Never forget: Recipes are meant to be altered. Experiment ... there are usually ways to 'follow' a recipe using whatever you happen to have on hand and don't be afraid to fail.

    We do have a Hospital in Az that has changed to a lot of plant choices you get to order and it tells if it is heart kidney safe. But Barrows I ended up in had nothing I could eat so I didn’t.

    Just watched Forks Over Knives! Amazingly inspiring documentary on the plant-based diet he talks about.
    I'm gonna stop with meat protein from now on and get started on plant-based. Its mainly fish and eggs I have to cut down on now. And dairy! ;) So it shouldn't be that hard.

      You are on a mission for the rest of your life. Consciously seek out continuing inspiration from leaders like Dr Esselstyn, Dr Ornish, and others. This can be a difficult path but never forget you have many supporters who are interested in and genuinely care about you and your progress.

    Please tell me the dates and locations of these plant conferences. Im 83, retired RN, my relatives have all except one, died in their 60’s. I own a lot of the books, eat mostly plant based, have trouble letting go of oil, eggs, salt, sugar….have hypertension, enlarged thick heart, sedentary …..fortunately no strokes, heart attacks, or pain yet ….but fearful of those things happening, but low self control….need help!…because I feel the same as Bob….I want to do something useful for someone before I die! 👍

      my arm above my shoulder plus my balance. 😢

    Vegan since May 1, 2005 due to health issues at age 58. I got sick and tired of taking care for my seriously sick husband. After a month I was weaned from all meds. No regrets, no more meds for 18+ years now.

      I remember being vegan and I was a massive supplement addict and spent so much money and my skin cream requirements also went through the roof.. get rid of the plants and replace it with meat I’d bet your health would skyrocket further.. ya just don’t know it!

    My friend improved his time to run 100 km by 1.5 hrs without extra training when he went whole plant based. A whole plant based diet isn’t only for the sick. As an aging (64 year old) WPB athlete myself who regularly sweats I cannot do the no salt. Without adequate salt my running times are slow, light headedness, fuzzy thinking. I prepare all my own foods so I know how much salt I get. I need the RDI of 5000 mg
    I would love to know the opinion of other WPB athletes.

      The RDI of sodium is 2300, not 5000.
      5000 is way too much!

      ​​​@@plantpoweredcertifiednutri6740Salt and sodium are not the same thing. Salt is comprised of two chemicals sodium and chlorine (as in chloride). 5000 g of salt is roughly 3000g of chloride and 2000g of sodium.

      ​@@plantpoweredcertifiednutri6740we need chloride ions so the stomach can produce hydrogen ions and in combination this creates HCL acid. Stomach acid is used to break down proteins into amino acids. The rdi for chloride is 3000 mg. It could be argued that people on a plant only diet need more stomach acid because the plant proteins are more interspersed with fibre.

      @@jimatsydney Salt / sodium both do the same type of damage to our arteries. They are both vasoconstrictors which constrict blood flow and causes hardening of our arteries.

    It depends on the situation, if they're overweight because of a disability that causes obesityn like the perso who has a condition that causes her thighs to get big. Then there’s injuries where people have limited movement etc. So telling someone you never met until you see them in a store or something that you use to be fat is tricky. Be careful

    My grandpa lived too 100 years old, and he walked until he was 99 years old, and he ate bacon and eggs every day. Never had a heart attack or stroke .

    Bob, I heard you said on this interview that your LDL is 30 something. Was your doctor concerned about a number below 50? My LDL is 38 and my doctor is concerned and would like to bring it up to 50 ( which according to him is the lowest it should be 🤔) I have no interest in adding saturated fats to my diet but also not sure if someone can live healthfully with a number this low 🤔.

      My cardiologist wants to get mine below 30. Look up some top lipidologists like Tom Dayspring or Dan Rader. No specialists in lipidology agree with your doctor. The lower, the better. Check out podcasts with lipidologists.

      Ultra processed foods
      No sugar/salt/oils
      Simple carbs
      Begin daily:

      I wouldn't be too hard on yourself. Unless you're really sick and need to make an immediate change you can ease into it over time. You're 95% of the way there.

      Check out broccoli mum she just put out an oil-free WFPB Indian cookbook that's pretty good she lived in India and designed it with her sister-in-law who is from india. Don't be too hard on yourself ease into it. Just find recipes you like without oil and fade out the ones with oil little by little.

      I am also an Indian. I follow total plant based diet called NDS ( Natural Diet System ). I hardly use oil. Most of my eating intake is Surya ahaar or suncooked food which means only fruits, fresh fruit juices, green juices, veg juices and boiled pulses or whole grains or some vegs ( which can not be eaten raw like potato, sweet potato ). No oil at all. I feel absolutely great. I am 67.

      I am an Indian, who is on whole food plant based diet. I don’t use any oil while cooking, but I understand that some spices impart better flavor when cooked in oil (as spices have some fat soluble aromatic compounds). So unless you have some serious condition, you can add a little oil while cooking spices. A little oil (say about one teaspoon) in the whole pot of curry enough for several people should not be a problem. You may use a smaller container when you are cooking spices in oil, so that less oil is needed to cover the spices. By the way, I can get pretty good flavors from spices even without oil, but may be some people may want enhanced flavor.

    The plant based diet is far superior to the standard American diet or the American Heart Association recommendations because refined carbs and sugars are minimised but it is not long term healthy. Plants do not want to be eaten. We've evolved over millions of years as meat eaters, we've only had settled cultivation for 10,000 years where it was possible to produce a surplus. The grains grown now have been dramatically altered during the last 40 years (see William Davis - Wheat Belly).

    I just don't understand how he lowered his A1C on the diet. I'm a former diabetic and struggling to feel satisfied on a plant-based diet without adding carbs like oats and beans. Oats and beans do nothing but raise my glucose. And without them, I just get too hungry.

      You can likely follow a very low glycemic protocol to satisfy your cravings, whilst lowering triglycerides. Look into some of the Lepticore products. Any individual products using this should also have a study supporting it. Incidentally, you can also do a pubmed search to find supporting studies.

      @@nsudatta-roy8154 Well, okay. I was addressing the plant-based diet being recommended in this video and this channel. Yes, I could use a low glycemic diet, like the one I used to reverse my diabetes. And I could add medication. But those aren't reason to think this diet will lower your A1C.
      Also, I routinely use pubmed to find studies. But it isn't entirely clear to me what study you are recommending here I look for.

      Add lentils and mushrooms together with lots of greens like collards (or kale if you enjoy kale). These foods together will not overly-spike your blood sugar but keep your hunger at bay. If you do get hungry, eat another bowl.

      @@g.e.boroush5176 I eat mushrooms by the truck full. I love 'em but they are low calorie. I eat tons of kale but need to limit other greens (oxalates). Lentils are like beans: They are higher calorie but also a lot of carbs.
      I'll continue to test how much I can eat of foods like beans and lentils. But so far, it seems like I should avoid them.

      You may probably already know this, but I was wondering if you tried putting cooked beans through cooling and reheating cycle(s) to increase resistance starch (resistance starch is similar to fiber and does not metabolize and is also prebiotics for gut bacteria). The amount of resistance starch (which is converted from starches in beans, potatoes, rice, etc) increases with the number of freezing and reheating cycles. By preparing this way, you might be able to consume small quantities of beans. I have no diabetes, but I always make enough quantities of starchy vegetables, brown basmati rice etc, for two meals. I refrigerate leftovers and eat again next day after reheating in order to get resistance starch for my gut bacteria. Lentils have a low glycemic index of 35. And can be subjected cooling/heating cycles to increase resistance starch and thus can probably reduce sugar spike somewhat.

    Great story! He, as an INHC, I'm sure he was informed of bio-individuality. I'm.75 into this video and not one recognition of this fact.
    There are many MDs here of YT that have similarly reversed many conditions without doing a 100% plant based diet.
    As a Health Coach, I just wished he was more balanced in his delivery.

      I work with eating disorders as a therapist and yes bio individuality is an important reality but I've never known anyone to do well on a SAD. Even other recognized health approaches agree that eating more vegetables, fruits and whole foods is critical to health.

    Sure you can eat like this for a few years but you are likely to fail again. Eat nothing but meat like I have and never have to worry about falling off. My bmi is 19. My weight is 132 @ 5'6". My age is 73 plus a few months. Havent had any processed foods in almost 2 years. I walked 1800 miles last year and have already walked an average of 5 miles a day this year. My heart rate is 52 bpm. BP is in the good range. Haven't gone to a doctor in 12 years. See no rreason to poke the boar by getting the pill pushers all excited that I'm not making them money by taking their drugs. Just ask yourself this question Vegans: If this plant food is so good for you why are you wanting that bacon/cheeseburger? Why is every child having to be forced to those vegetables? We are designed by nature to eat meat as it supplies all the material to keep our bodies work at high levels of activity. How many vegans would it to take down an elephant with spears?For those vegans who state that they would never harm that elephant: What if it were destroying your garden?
