I end up in the 50g per day range....but it's due to my seed and nut consumption. I put 2 tablespoons of flax, hemp & chia seeds in my oatmeal just about every day. Also a 1/4 cup of walnuts. But I really try to keep any other fats to nil or an absolute minimum. My saturated fat I keep below 10g daily.

There is no healthy fat as far as I am concerned. I have been whole food plant based for years. I never ate oil and my only overt fats were nuts and seeds and occasional avocado. My cholesterol never went above 145. I developed calcified aorta, ischemic spine, calcified heart valves, and hbp (though I never ate salt when I could avoid it) Now I get my fats from greens and oats and sometimes chia for thickener. I have MUCH more energy...my cholesterol went down to 127. My blood pressure is going down...for the first time in years. I owe this change to Dr. Peter Rogers and his videos. I never understood how harmful fats are until his explanations.

It’s reassuring to hear that some fat is required. I was never so sick as when I truly went fat free. Just some olives make a huge difference. The problem with the nuts is that they are “roasted” meaning mixed with oil (usually soy or some vegetable oil) and put into an oven-the nuts aren’t fried, but they might as well be. Consider eating only nuts that can be eaten raw or prepared in a way that doesn’t involve “roasting.”

This is a very good discussion, thanks. I have a very limited, measured amount of chia seeds daily. I also got a little more fruit and my nutrient level is looking excellent. When I first went whole food-plant based, I didn't watch my nutrients as close as I should and it's probably even more important when running a calorie deficit like I did back then.

I just want to share my just over 3month experience with being a (whole foods starch-based) no-added oil and low fat vegan. I was worried about my skin drying out and being constantly hungry, but this has not been the case at all. I get great satisfaction, enjoy the food, and within the past 2 weeks or so began to notice what appears to be improved skin quality; this is not only on my face but my body. It is not dry at all, but very bright, smooth, clear, soft and “fresh” for lack of a better term. The texture, appearance, and moisture level has improved. As a matter of fact, when I went on a beach vacation about a month ago, my skin did not even peel. It usually does peel, even though I always use sunscreen. So technically the skin benefits probably started sooner than I officially noticed a difference in its quality. I don’t even eat fatty whole foods on a daily basis, only every so often, maybe once per week. But what I do eat daily are legumes and fruits and veggies high in vitamin C like broccoli, brussel sprouts, broccoli, citrus, bell peppers, etc.

Dr Barnard deserves the congeniality award for the wfpb doctors, but for a deep dive into nutritional science the crown goes to Dr. Fuhrman. According to him, moderate amounts of nuts and seeds (1.5 to 3 ounces daily) is health promoting. Better to limit grains than nuts and seeds. By the way, I eat moderate amounts of nuts, seeds and avocado daily and my BMI is slightly over 20.

    • @chiyerano

Yeah, this is the only part where I disagree with Dr. Barnard, his views on nuts and seeds and certain saturated fats. Nuts and seeds are important to have and should be had preferably in raw and sprouted forms unless a person is allergic. Saturated fats can actually be beneficial when consumed as whole plant based foods.

Um...just eating the little amount of flax and nuts can put you well over double what Dr Neal said.
Cutting out all nuts and seeds from my diet that is almost entirely whole plant foods and I am still around 25 grams of fat per day.
So then are we supposed to eat nuts and seeds or not? Me eating the small amounts that I do, along with the other fat in my diet, puts me at 56 grams per day on the average day for 2,100 calories, or about 24% calories from fat.
Then what am I supposed to do for getting my calories back up if I cut 270 calories of nuts and seeds....that also take away some minerals, fiber, protein which pushes the caloric drop closer to 400 calories? Throw more fruit and potatoes at it? What about the loss in Vitamin E intake that I have to make up? You want me to pop supplements now?
Love you Doc, but what are you smoking? How can one even maintain the proper omega 3 and omega 6 balance with what you are suggesting is the right amount of fat in the diet?
My saturated fat is around 8 grams or less per day so that is nice and low and what I do get is from nuts and seeds. Even 1.0gram of that is from Bananas that I eat (according to cronometer).

Also, the science really isn't convincing. People eating a bit of nuts and seeds daily have better health than people who don't. Check out Dr. Greger on this topic.

Well I watched a Dr Barnard presentation on Physicians Committee, in which he speaks about the Lyon study. I am from Lyon so I was particularily curious. What he says is that the LDL in the med group diet and the control groups was the same ( 162 vs 159, so quite high in fact ) and still there was a huge difference in terms of mortality thanks apparently to ALA, EPA and vit C. So it seems to me that it directly contradicts the whole concept of having to lower LDL as much a possible. It is really useless unless the person has a low anti oxidant status. And this can be corrected easily. Studies have shown that mono and poly unsaturated fats change the size of the LDL particles from small dense to big fluffy. Also I read that HDL can be oxidized too and that when it is oxidized, it cannot perform it role of removing the cholesterol from the plaques, so here again, the anti oxidant status is important.
I'm trying to be objective, I don't care one way or another, but from what I understand increasing anti-oxidants is the way to go, given that LDL is important for other things in the body.

Dr. Barnard recommended small amounts; however, latest Dr. Greger’s podcast provided research studies revealing no weight gain when consuming large amounts of nuts. What is the real truth regarding amount of nuts and seeds intake? I know Dr. Goldner uses 1/2 cup of flax or chia seeds in her smoothie with others recommending only up to 1 Tbs per day.

Eh, should, let me put it this way then.
You can't just select where do you lose the fat.
So, the best approach is getting to a certain total of fat percentage in your body, which can be achieved by nutrition+exercise.
This is why i said that, doing that, you should be able to lose said belly fat.
Targetting exercise on belly ones isn't going to work if you don't lose the rest, to a certain extent, nor only nutrition because it isn't magic and although it makes some fat drop, and metabolism to get better, is not enough.
      Was i clear now?

Checked studies, there is literlly NONe that puts a roof of how many you can eat, there's just no downsides.
Do consider that it's not the same if the fruit is in a juice or whole, you need the fiber so you don't get the sugar issue that you're afraid of.
Also, eat them alone, not with fats, longer time in the belly, which means more fermentation, which i turn causes indigestion for some people, and also, fat and sugar aren't good together

Long ago I used to cook with it for a short while because I heard that it supposed to be good for you. But I hated it too, the sweet coconuty smell of my chicken, eww. I might be allergic to it. I think it's bc he encourages making this as easy as possible and most will not do it if can't go out to dinner.....bit it's also clear that he believes there is no reason other than that, to eat oil.....I'm following a strict Dr Esselstyn diet and so rarely eat out anymore....Chef AJ also says it's impossible to have a meal 100% clean of oil in a restaurant, even if you ask & police it to some extent.....I just wish he would add that to clarify the situation bc many hearing him just say "keep the oil to a minimum" can assume, in error, that oils are good for you if you "just keep them to a minimum:....I'm aware that he made it clearer in this video by saying have an olive instead but ijust think it would be so helpful if he added ..."but better still none at all"

Of course we need fat to absorb fat-soluble vitamins (A,D,E). Otherwise we will get to trouble. And we are designed by Nature to eat fat a lot. As evidense of it ia that we have a gallbladder and our liver is designed to produce sensible amount of bile. And the main thing to remember - fats have zero glycemic index. These kind of advice by Dr Barnard can harm many people.
