Dang, salamat in most Islamic dialects means feel better soon, never seen it be used as a goodbye before, kinda funny cause I imagined you telling Joshua to feel better soon after that fried chicken, diarrhea cityyyyy
I can't honestly blame non-Filipinos for not liking Filipino Spaghetti. It's really an acquired taste. Honestly, I wouldn't even mind if Joshua said that he hated it because I understand why; but he really went out of his way to be extra respectful with it and I respect that. For non-Filipinos who might be wondering how one can like the absurdity of a very sweet spaghetti, just think of having it as your introduction to spaghetti as a kid without knowing about the traditional style. I bet that you'll love it as well. I even think that most Filipinos haven't had a taste of the traditional spaghetti and I guarantee you as well that most of them won't like it when they try it. It's also not like we like everything to be extra sweet over here, it's just a culture thing. That's all that there is to it.
I’m not Filipino but I’ve always preferred a sweeter spaghetti sauce so I was really intrigued when I first heard of Jollibee’s and the concept of Filipino spaghetti. No Jollibee’s near me sadly, but I read about it and watched some videos. I bought containers of something called I think sweet Filipino spaghetti sauce and even ordered banana ketchup online! I finally got to make it and I LOVE it. Definitely different from an Italian type of sauce - which I also love - but I think it’s fantastic. I can’t believe I never heard of it until recently. Love the uniqueness and how dear it is to people.
I agree. I once lived in a household that abhors traditional italian spaghetti, but goes apeshit on sweet filipino-style sauce (including the ones sold on the streets)
As a kid I didnt even know there were other styles of spaghetti. I grew up in the US but in a Filipino neighborhood and we never called it Filipino spaghetti, just spaghetti. So the 1st time I tried tomato based spaghetti I was wierded out.
As someone who had a Filipino aunt when I was growing up, Eating her Spaghetti was some of the most fond memories I had. She didn't use Banana Ketchup but she did use a sweeter brand of Ketcup than the ketcups I am finding today in Most supermarkets. There's just something different about a sweet Ketchup that makes things taste so much better.
I think the main reason your spaghetti failed against the Jollibee Jolly Spaghetti is because they use banana sauce or banana ketchup instead of tomato sauce. I personally love the sweet Filipino style spaghetti. When I was living on the west side of O'ahu there was a point that I was going to the Ka Makana Ali'i Jollibee almost every day for the Jolly Hotdog and Jolly Spaghetti.
Where is Jollibee's official statement confirming that they are using banana ketchup? All I see is this urban legend getting posted on social media and said by vloggers but I haven't heard Jollibee validating this or any article of Jollibee validating that they are using banana ketchup.
The secret is annatto, that is why the sauce is red orange. I am not sure whether there is banana ketchup but there is definitely a tangy taste from annatto.
It didn't fail. The reason is he as a white man couldn't give a bad score to a minority group publicly in this "woke" climate we're living in that would've offended their culture.

Jollibee is pretty much a large part of an average Filipino's childhood. So our attachment to it is pretty strong even way into our adulthood. Also, I've never smelled a fried chicken as fragrant as the chickenjoy. You can smell it from like a mile away 😁 that's how you'd know there's a Jolllibee nearby.
From what I heard. This was a marketing strategy of Jollibee. For their kitchen exhausts placed and pointed directly to the sidewalk in front of Jollibee so that people walking through would smell the chickenjoy.
I'm super happy you did this. I can't wait to try it out myself. I had Jollibee for the first time in 2018 and it blew my mind. I did rice instead of spaghetti, and the gravy was perfect on everything, and I don't even like gravy
As I'd read the comments, Filipino style spaghetti is an unorthodox style, but we way like our pasta that way. Kudos for that. As for your approach to our fried breaded chicken, it's a culinary upgrade if Jollibee would consider. Not to mention, he asked a Filipino to rate both meals, and staying true to his Filipino roots. Overall, it's nice that "for the first time in your BUT BETTER series" your team came up with a stalemate, against your restaurants in the US.
I appreciate that you were super respectful and appreciative of our Jollibee while staying true to the But Better formula. I used to LOVE how sweet Jollibee spaghetti is when I was younger but as I got older it actually became a bit too much for me. So I totally see your view on it too. Awesome video
When you’ve been eating it since your childhood, you definitely get used to it. So it’s understandable why those who are new to tasting the spaghetti are a bit weirded out. But to us, banana ketchup is a staple to a perfect Filipino spag recipe. It’s used in so many dishes, especially the ✨holy trinity✨
Yes you got it since it depends on what you grew up eating Im a filipino and Im more on a the sweet sauce since thats what i have taste ever since i was a child. I have tasted the italian style when I'm on highschool and i prefer the filipino but i respect how italians made it since its there culture also i watch cooking shows and able to understand there recipes.
Agree, me and my family have always been used to Filipino Style Spaghetti, so when we tried spaghetti from a different fast food chain (if i'm right it's the "Italian Style Spaghetti" at McDonald's. We weren't a big fan of McDo, I love the sundaes though), my parents complained about it being sour or at least different from the usual sweet type
I kind of agree, because as a Filipina myself I grew up with sweet spaghetti. As I got older I couldn’t eat sweet spaghetti anymore liking mine sour and such. I just grew out of the overly sweet stuff. Even if it was extra sweet I can only eat a few small bites.
Honestly the whole point of Jollibee spaghetti is that it's sweet. I grew up with it, love the hotdogs mixed in with it and the addition of the ground beef The gravy is honestly the best one out of every other fast food chain I've eaten at.
Thanks Josh for doing this “But Better” and highlighting Jollibee chicken. And I appreciate you keeping the respect on the Filipino spaghetti and not bashing it. I know it’s weird to some, let’s just say it’s an acquired taste.
I’ve always said that nothing beats Jollibee when it comes to fast food, but when Joshua dedicates his time to make the recipe more refined, I’m always down and would love to try it. I bet it must taste really awesome considering that I love Jollibee to death
When it comes to spaghetti taste it really comes from preference, maybe he is not used to sweet spaghetti that is why he likes it less, most reaction vids i have seen, yeah when it comes to spaghetti they did not like it because its too sweet. 😂
The reason why Joshua added sugar was because it was sweet but Sweet Filipino style spaghetti sauce is made with banana ketchup and a few more ingredients. Edit: there are also vegan version of the Burgers if anyone is wondering. But I think it's only for bigger ones. Not sure about the other burgers.
Some history with our spaghetti, when we were introduced to it and ketchup, tomatoes weren't readily available back then in the Philippines but we had abundance of bananas. With this we made banana ketchup to replace our tomato ketchup that wasn't available. So it naturally has a sweet flavor from the bananas and dyed it red to look like tomatoe ketchup.. Then we started using it to replace tomatoes in other dishes like spaghetti, that is why its sweet. Hope that helps you understand why it's sweet
One thing you got wrong, we had the banana ketchup during the 2nd world war, since we had no way to import nor transport tomatoes to factories, Maria Orosa sought for a way to substitute popular condiments using local resources and thus the banana ketchup was invented
I just love how Joshua going into this was like "ah it'll be fine" and then when he actually tries it he's like "oh shit this is actually good, what have I done". Also, fair dues to Joshua for giving it a fair review. He could have easily just talked shite about it to keep his record going, but instead he gave it a fair chance (Side note do any of ye know if there's a Jollibees in Ireland because damn that looks good).
Yup, that’s definitely the typical reaction a non-Filipino has to Filipino style spaghetti. It’s probably pretty weird to taste something that’s usually savory be sweet in another culture or recipe. Kinda like my experience with avocados. I like them accompanied with chips and in sandwiches, but not much as a ice cream or dessert flavor. And I’ve always preferred the texture of the fried chicken from Jollibee than KFC. I like the seasoning on KFC a bit more, but not the biggest fan of them not doing so well at making their breading crispy most of the time. And the Jollibee near your place doesn’t do chicken breasts? I guess that’s a foreign Jollibee thing, as last time I’ve been there they still do Chicken Joy breasts.
I had a similar reaction the first time wife (filipina) made her version of Jollibee's spaghetti. I liked it, but it was weird and different. She perfected her recipie and now over 10 years later, her spaghetti that she just calls, "Filipino Spaghetti" is the only spaghetti I will eat. Of course she still thinks Jollibee is better but I think that has more to do with childhood nostalgia than anything else.
Im a filipino and i think that our culture of making things sweet is dumb because not only it ruins the real taste but it also makes filipinos think that the sweet spaghetti is the real version and they will dislike anything that isn't sweet like spaghetti

the sweetness from the spaghetti is base on how Filipino traditionally cook spaghetti to satisfy the sweet tooth of children in every fiesta and party in the household or neighborhood cuz every gathering in the Philippines there will always be children present
*Joshua, you are once again proving your qualities as a great professional! Thank you for this helpful tip for the marinated chicken and flour, it really looks sooo appetizing!*
The reason Jollibee spaghetti sauce is so sweet is it's made with banana ketchup (basically ketchup made with bananas instead of tomatoes and a ton of red food dye) and a a little bit of tomatoes. So it's more natural sugar than cane sugar, but this is a great alternative if you can't find banana ketchup in your area!
After seeing so many But Betters, it’s uncanny how little Joshua roasted Jollibee and you know he doesn’t hold back if he doesn’t like something, he even liked the spaghetti! Respect man.
It's been a really common thing for me to see people not liking Filipino Spaghetti. I tried Italian spaghetti once and was like "why is it not sweet?". I gues we just have different palates of which we are used to. Your cooking looks nice thooo, I wanna tryy.
Filipinos barely had enough tomatoes to make sauce for spaghetti or pasta back in Post-WW2. So, in a brilliant moment of desperation, They used bananas as a substitute. That’s why it ended up being so sweet. Okay. Don’t @ me but *tomato sauces are gross.*
Sweet spaghetti is absolute garbage, and I'm surprised foreigners can even stand eating our own spaghetti. Like, tbh hotdogs are a fine substitute for meatballs, and cheese isn't often standard, but it works, but the sauce... The spaghetti sauce we use is atrocious. Every birthday party, every restaurant both fast food and high class, sweet spaghetti is served and it does not mesh well at all, especially when paired with all the other food you may be eating with it. Standard Spaghetti being sweet and sour provides a perfect mix that makes eating the dish delectable and overall a pleasant experience, especially if you add more to it like basil, oregano, a lot of different greens to add to it. Specially made meatballs make some beautiful spaghetti dishes that are incredibly filling and incredibly delicious. My whole family and I have tried doing anything to change the taste of Filipino styled Spaghetti, it hasn't changed shit. The sweetness of Filipino spaghetti overpowers anything you put into it. I would have to spend more than necessary just to make the spaghetti more balanced, and at that point, I should have just made regular spaghetti. Eating Filipino Spaghetti is like eating sugar, it's super fucking sweet. I would not be surprised if the leading cause of diabetes in the Philippines can be linked to people who consume Filipino Styled Spaghetti.
every time I watch a Jolly spaghetti review, i cover one eye because it's like a foreigner might love it or hate it (usually hate). that spaghetti is originally designed for children's party. that's why it's sweet. and Filipino adults eat it because we grew up eating it. that is why I don't care if foreigners hate our sweet spaghetti. I crave for it.
solo i dont think its designed for childrens specially.. its naturally sweet cuz the banana ketchup and brown sugar not white sugar... which is a love or hate relationship for dayuhans in phils... and no im not pinoy but a white guy ask any filipino if they have white sugar in their kitchen... prolly a HARD NO 🤣
Now I'm curious what actual spaghetti tastes like. I've only known the Filipino style all my life and grew up thinking that's how spaghetti really tastes like. It was kind of a shock when I learned our spaghetti is actually considered weird by foreigners lol.
Filipinos use banana ketchup in their spaghetti sauce to sweeten it, but I, as a Filipino who migrated to Canada, personally prefer brown sugar. I also add a Tbsp powdered milk to my spag sauce if available, I think it gives a slightly creamier texture.
When I first started eating at jollibee I ate an unhealthy amount of the spaghetti, but I’ve recently just stuck with the rice. So much better as a combo to the chicken and gravy!
What I love about this video is that Joshua does not use Filipino bait-he genuinely sets out to do something also he is honest and says that he does not like the spaghetti. you go kuya josh!
"Unholy and kinda good" seems like an apt description. I don't understand why the banana ketchup needs to be an ingredient because it does make the dish so sweet, and yet Imma eat all of it, every time.
When I had Jollibee for the first time when it came to Times Square, I was like damn, this immediately became my favorite fried chicken joint. Popeyes = Chicken Sandwich and the deals Kfc = only immediate walking distance Jollibee = A satisfying experience Church's = best biscuits hands down
I agree about Church's biscuits. Once upon a time Popeyes biscuits reigned supreme. They were once buttery and fluffy. Now, I call them murder biscuits. If you don't have something to drink, you could choke because they are so dry.
@@acertainmysteriousvirtuoso6150 It's really not meant for kids. As a Filipino born and raised in the Philippines the Filipino palate likes really sweet things, it's evident not only in Filipino spaghetti but other foods too like Pares (beef stew) which is generally sweet.
If you grew up with it then yes, as you grow older you might attribute it to nostalgia. However, it all comes down to being an acquired taste. Nothing fancy or made for whoever.
I think this case is less "made for kids" and more that it was based on spaghetti American GIs made in WWII with whatever they could find near base, not what was supposed to be in the recipe, and the tradition evolved from there.
I use condensed milk to make the spaghetti sauce. Tomatoes are hard to get in tropical south east Asia, hence the banana sauce. (Maybe try a series of episodes on alternative ingredients?) Filipino spaghetti is loved by kids, but pasta is the messiest thing for them to eat.
So happy and validating to see Josh's dredging technique lol this is exactly how I've been doing fried chicken despite being told I'm doing it wrong and gotta DOUBLE dredge

Funny thing about jollibee spaghetti. It tastes way different when it’s cold but not in a bad way. It’s like stoner munchies guilty pleasure kind of taste.
What makes Filipino spaghetti great for Filipinos is because it brings back childhood memories. It is served at children's birthday parties so it is also made to cater their tastes. Great thing about it is... when it is home cooked, u can make it less sweet and adjist to ur taste... one thing that is constant for me though... pasta has to be al dente. ALWAYS.
"Unholy and kinda good" yep, and that's why I can down like 3-5 servings of Jolly spaghetti at a party or something. Shit is addicting. I heard they actually changed the sweetness level in other countries, but here in the Philippines it's sweet and tangy because of Banana Ketchup.

As an American who has spent a lot of time in Philippines, I consumed many a meal at Jollibee. I also explored other Filipino cuisine, including balut. The chicken is awesome. Yes, the spaghetti is different, but you treated this challenge with respect. Judging from the feedback here, you also summoned the “Pinoy Pride” we know so well. Salamat
So are we looking for his HONEST opinion or are we looking for him to skew his ratings system to appease towards a certain group so that he won't hurt anyone "feelings" and don't want the viewers to judge him negatively as a white man giving what they think is a offensive rating?
Yea and balut is amazing
Dang, salamat in most Islamic dialects means feel better soon, never seen it be used as a goodbye before, kinda funny cause I imagined you telling Joshua to feel better soon after that fried chicken, diarrhea cityyyyy
Omar Allabban
‘Salamat’ in Filipino is ‘Thank you’
As a Filipino myself, I do NOT enjoy balut but I'm glad you had a blast in our country lol
Based.
I love Filipinos, they're the best people ever. Always so sweet and happy.
@@retrotechpinas3640 All filipino spaghetti forever has been made using banana ketchup, obviously not just banana ketchup but yea.
The secret is annatto, that is why the sauce is red orange. I am not sure whether there is banana ketchup but there is definitely a tangy taste from annatto.

Meh. Its only delicious when its spicy.

As a filipino, can I ask what's the holy trinity?

I kind of agree, because as a Filipina myself I grew up with sweet spaghetti. As I got older I couldn’t eat sweet spaghetti anymore liking mine sour and such. I just grew out of the overly sweet stuff. Even if it was extra sweet I can only eat a few small bites.
Honestly the whole point of Jollibee spaghetti is that it's sweet. I grew up with it, love the hotdogs mixed in with it and the addition of the ground beef

tf is banana ketchup 💀
I love your work josh
I just love how Joshua going into this was like "ah it'll be fine" and then when he actually tries it he's like "oh shit this is actually good, what have I done".

There’s none. The closest you can get them is London, I believe.
Nah, you need to go to UK for that Jollibee fix.
Of course she still thinks Jollibee is better but I think that has more to do with childhood nostalgia than anything else.
yeah. Same reaction I had when I tried adding butter or sugar in my ommelette... Different food preferences, really

I loved that this time there was actually a challenge, it's boring when it's clearly easy to make a superior product.

As an italian I love all our different types of pasta. I’ve tried y’alls and honestly I enjoyed it and its flavor
Filipinos barely had enough tomatoes to make sauce for spaghetti or pasta back in Post-WW2. So, in a brilliant moment of desperation, They used bananas as a substitute. That’s why it ended up being so sweet.
Okay. Don’t @ me but
*tomato sauces are gross.*
Josh when it's a fast food place from another country: "It's good. I'm gonna respect the original but improve on it"
Have you ever think how American fast food kinda suck?
@@giahuynguyenkim6389 Not all, I think the difference is that josh is careful with other people's cultures. If it's just a generic american restaurant he can diss on it all he wants. I do know Josh grew up on in N out
Exactly this. Jollibee is some of the blandest chicken I’ve ever had. The pasta sauce is so weird and off putting. The only good menu item is the mango peach pies.
Most people get put off by the Spaghetti because they're coming into it thinking about Italian Spaghetti when you should think of it as basically a different type of pasta dish
FAACCTTSS
Petition for Joshua to make a burger steak, BUT BETTER
I am a Jollibee fan but thank you for recreating it. I tried it at home and I love it! ❤❤❤
@Ezanobi damn why gotta disrespect our country like that, find your own place homesick kid
Impossible, no way he can make chickenjoy and jollispagetthi better.
7:47 i was eating and i almost spat out my food 😂
7:46 Josh when he eats jolibee
I was super nervous about this one, but I’m happy you did it respectfully, almost in homage to the culture. 👍🏾
i will defend Filipino spaghetti with my life. I love Italian pasta too, but yeah Filipino spaghetti has a very special place in my heart
U should definitely try peach mango pie from jollibee as well :)
Not gonna lie, at a quick glance at the thumbnail before clicking, I couldn't discern which was Josh's version. Both looked equally satisfying.
Papa needs to make his own fast food chain and show them how its done
And then his food will turn to shit. Fast food isn't about quality. It's about efficiency and speed
he could utilise his but faster skills, and besides he will obviously have employees
Papa would go bankrupt because his fast food moves so slow.
@@infi_night The idea wouldn't work. You can't make gourmet food at fast food speed and prices. Something has to be taken away for the other. Speed, quality, or price. You can't have all 3.
Appreciation of cultural foods is an art that Anthony Bourdain perfected and I wish I got more of those appreciation vibes here.
