  • A new study reports a ketogenic diet can significantly improve depression, bipolar, and schizoaffective disorders. More evidence continues to accumulate showing the potential use of ketogenic diets in various mental health conditions. It's time to take this seriously. Ongoing research will soon provide even more data to support if keto diets should be a standard treatment option.

I suffered from anxiety for years and nothing calmed my brain more than the ketogenic diet! It even got me through the pandemic lockdown because I had the energy to learn new and exciting things. I have since transitioned to low carb diet (under 50-60 grams), but I will never go back to eating sugar or processed foods.

Ketones + neurological stuff = improvements (as a general rule). Seizures, mental illness, migraines, neuropathic pain, chronic pain, dementia ... Your wider nervous system THRIVES on ketones. So do lots of other tissues. As a med student in the 1970s, I was taught that ketones were the preferred fuel for brain, heart and (most of) kidney. How did the message get so screwed up?

I'm diagnosed bipolar II, but had far more depression, mild paranoia, irritability, and anxiety than I did mania. I went keto for 7 months and all of those improved. However, I then went carnivore (a year in August) and my symptoms all but vanished. No paranoia, depression, and seldom anxiety and irritability, and then only if there's an actual reason or I've eaten off plan. So if you're keto and still not seeing full improvement you might try carnivore.

For years after that I treated myself with both supplements and avoidance. I was taking 200 mg of 5HTP three times a day, 2000mg of Valerian root, Kava Kava when I was extra anxious, Vitamin D, omega 3, just to name a few, plus I would drink Passionflower tea before bed. I learned that if I went to bed in a calm state I was more likely to wake up in a calm state, and whatever state I woke up in largely dictated how I would be the rest of the day.
I was also on disability for my mental disorder, so not having to hold down a job helped. I still struggled a lot, but doing all of the above at least kept me from having a completely breakdown.

Not only does the ketogenic diet help mental disorders but it also helps chronic pain as well.
It seems we were all taught from a young age that carbohydrates should make up the majority of our dietary consumption (remember that food pyramid?) and many decades ago sugar companies paid for a whole lotta studies to prove that they were okay and that fat was the bad thing? and notice how people's health has deteriorated because of this?
Think outside the box here. It's intentionally this way.

Hi. If you have a patient that doesn't quite get the results you'd hope for you might suggest a full carnivore diet. I'm diagnosed bipolar II with mild psychosis, and the last several years I haven't really had much mania (probably because I was so physically sick and tired), but a constant low-level depression (which always worsened during the winter and summer, so I'm guessing undiagnosed SAD), mild paranoia, and fairly severe irritability and anxiety. I was keto for 7 months and all of those improved, but they didn't completely go away. I switched to carnivore 11 months ago and all of my symptoms have vanished but some very occasional anxiety and irritability, and when those do happen they can be attributed to something, either life events or eating off plan.
Also, I found out aspartame is a big no. I had cut it out years ago, and a few months ago I stupidly decided to have a diet soda, got addicted to them, thought my mood disturbances were the caffeine, switched to root beer, and still had the same issues. I finally talked myself into quitting and I'm back to almost no symptoms.
I know carnivore sounds extreme, and we've been taught too much meat is unhealthy, but I gave it a try because I also had severe bloating and exhaustion that was only somewhat improved on keto. I've since learned that carnivore is a very healthy and healing diet in a magnitude of ways, and all of the things we've been told about red meat and saturated fat are misguided at best, and usually just plain wrong. Keto saved me from very likely an early death (and honestly between the mental illness and how bad I felt physically, I low-key hoped for such), but carnivore gave me my life back.
      Sorry this was so long.

So like with ADHD where you might have to take the stimulant meds chronically, having the medication side effects and a poor diet is probably a pretty big contributing factor to why so many more people with ADHD go on to develop T-2 diabetes.

Ive been on Keto diet since Friday and i have more energy, mental clarity, and less depression. Medications (and ive tried a lot!!) dont help much if any.
For my mental health I'm actually thinking about staying on keto forever!! Also, in 6 days ive dropped about 9 pounds. Also im drinking black coffee 2 times per day and having first meal around noon.

Many or even most mental healthcare facilities where the mentally ill are residents are "step-down" meaning the point is to get the residents able to step down to a less restrictive setting such as a group home, & eventually living on their own, making their own choices. Keto is not easy in that in requires discipline to be successful & this is not always easy for the mentally ill for whom much of their lives are about making choices that the rest of us find simple and even eating for them, making their own meals & choosing their food is not simple. Plus they are unlikely to get help from any dietitians or nutritionists with social services for whom most do not view keto as a healthy way of eating.

my thoughts on Ketovore: So 1/2 cup blueberries is 11 grams carbs. So around 2 cups would be 50 grams carbs per day. I likely want to do about 20grams carbs, restrict as much as humanly possible. To make my way as close to possible to have success on carnivore. I was doing 1 green smoothie a day and then 2 meat meals for 1 month and I was feeling great, felt energised and clear headed plus better sleeps waking up refreshed. And mood was way better. So I need to get back to that. Stuff to put in smoothies that is not sweet such as cucumbers and spinach would be my main stay. I would try to do maybe 1/4 cup mixed fruits max. One way to think about it for me is 1/4 cup of greens or fruit per meal per day. It is still miniscule amount, but I wonder if it would help me to stay on carnivore. Or at least start on it successfully. I fell off the wagon last time, starting with a big pot of oatmeal. Thought it wouldnt derail me, but the carb binge led to further of the same, until I was right off the plan

There is significant proof that the ketogenic diet improves mental health symptoms. There is a factor of increasing whole foods are effective in reducing processed foods consumed, carb reduction, and gluten-free that may not be accounted for regarding symptom reduction. Of course, ketogenic reduced sugar and carb consumption in order to promote the ketogenic state. Lack of processed foods may play a significant role in symptom reduction.

All of them in less than 100 days, most even within 50 days. For a few it took 150 or even 250 days to get significantly better. For all participants days on keto: range 15-248 days

I've been a fan of Diet Doctor for something like four years. You do great work.
However, you folks tend to overuse/misuse the term "ketogenic diet". What you really recommend is better described as a low-carbohydrate diet.
As you know, true ketogenic diets are mostly fat with only a minimum amount of protein.
Diet Doctor (correctly) recommends higher protein.
It is a small thing, but you folks do it repeatedly and often. You might reach a wider (slightly) audience by using more true (and less sensational) language. And you would be setting a good example for the rest of the community.

    • @dietdoctor
      @dietdoctor  2 роки тому +11

There is no singular "ketogenic diet". A keto diet is one that results in ketosis. It has more to do with carbohydrate restriction than the amount of protein or fat eaten. There can be a wide range of both protein and fat for most people where they will still be in ketosis when carbs are restricted.
